Around SBN: Jerry Sandusky's Wife Tries To Run A Reporter Over

Open Thread: Cubs vs. Mariners, Wednesday 6/13, 7:05 CT

I had meant to mention this yesterday, but got sidetracked and forgot; it's still relevant today, given the huge discussion we had about umpire Jim Wolf's outrageous ejection of Ted Lilly on Sunday night.

I have obtained the email address for the executive assistant to Jimmie Solomon, who is MLB's Executive VP for Baseball Operations, and listed at the top of the "Umpire Executives" list at mlb.com. His assistant's name is Michele Wilchek, and you can email her at

michele (dot) wilchek (at) mlb (dot) com

(yes, there is a dot between michele and wilchek)

At least these emails will get to someone with the authority to do something about Mr. Wolf's contemptible actions on the field in Atlanta Sunday night. Fortunately, as Bruce Miles writes, Lilly's penalty, beyond the ejection, will be only a fine, not a suspension:

Cubs pitcher Ted Lilly will be fined, but not suspended, for hitting Atlanta’s Edgar Renteria with a pitch and getting ejected in the first inning Sunday, according to Cubs general manager Jim Hendry.

The Cubs wasted no time contacting Major League Baseball and letting disciplinarian Bob Watson and umpire overseer Mike Port know they felt home-plate umpire Jim Wolf mishandled the situation.

Now, on to tonight's game, and perhaps just once, the Cubs can get through a game mishap-free. Is that too much to ask?

vs. Sea -- vs. Cubs
Marshall, of course, has never faced the Mariners, and of the current Seattle team, has faced only one player (Jose Guillen, 0-for-1) who is likely to start tonight. He has thrown well in all four of his starts since his recall on May 23. I just wish he could have a better picture taken.

The Cubs are quite familiar with Batista, who has spent most of his career in the NL, mainly with Arizona and Montreal. He's 2-2, 6.27 vs. the Cubs in 17 appearances (5 starts), and also spent the 1997 season in a Cub uniform. That year, I think I'd rather forget.

Cliff Floyd, among the current Cubs, hits him best: .400/.478/.650 in 20 career AB.

Does anyone know why the Mariners site Lookout Landing calls Batista "Beluga Tits"? That's a new one on me.

How exciting! We're on WGN tonight. That way the whole country can see the exciting juggernaut that is the 2007 Cubs! Or, you can check the Mediacenter.

Question about last night
Anyone wonder why PH with Floyd in the 8th?  I think it was clear that the IBB would happen whether it was Murton or Floyd and we effectively lost Floyd and gained a slow runner instead.

Good stuff lately and I agree 100% on your recent stuff about Barrett...could you imagine, if we ever get back in the playoffs, how this guy (nice guy, well meaning and all) could just do something to cost us a critical game??

He has stone hands and catcher is not a position for those!!
I don't know what our options are for '08 but hope he's not back. I hate to think how many games he's been a big part of us losing with his PB's and other blunders.

When I read about Lilly's fine...
...the first word that comes to my mind is, "And....?"

What about Renteria? What is his penalty for walking out toward the mound to presumably physically assault Ted Lilly? What is his penalty for actually physically assaulting Mike Fontenot? Where is their justice?

Thanks for that e-mail address, Al. I will write.

As for tonight's game, let's hope the Cubs can get to Baluga Tits early and milk him (ouch) for a few more runs than they got from Washburn last night. I'm not exactly feeling great about this series. Seattle seems to be a team that makes a lotta contact and scores a lotta runs. That doesn't bode well for a team like the Cubs that makes a lotta errors and whose offense tends to shut down for long stretches.

I want the Cubs to go 5 and 2 on this homestand. That means, if they lose tonight, they'll have to win tomorrow and then sweep the Padres. Doubtful. Let's just get a win tonight and ease the pressure, shall we?

Go Cubs!!!

A BIG yes to that!
I haven't heard a PEEP from my loser brother in law Sux fans in about 14 months. I told them when they won the WS savor it because you will probably never win another with the history of Chicago baseball.

As an aside to your aside, I knew they would suck this year, Kenny Williams did nothing to improve this team from last year, I believe they are actually worse with age catching up to Konerko and Thome and other than Garland, they have no pitching. They caught lightning in a bottle in '05, hard to hang onto it and ride it to the promised land by standing pat.

I hate this
Not just because I love Murton who is being ruined by not getting regular playing time ( how quickly we forget he lead the team in BA last year) but why the F do we need ANOTHER pitcher? With Ramirez out we could use an INFIELDER but 13 pitchers? Are we going for quantity over quality ? Hey we have
MORE pitchers than you even if we don't really trusty any of the relievers?

Most likely
the extra pitcher is because the bullpen has thrown about 22 innings since Saturday. I imagine there will be a pitcher dropped in the next 7-10 days.

Murton schmurton
I agree he would have played better with more playing time; but that's true with anybody. When he played, this year at least, he played like goo. He already can't throw; couple that with fielding mistakes and substandard hitting, it becomes difficult to warrant more playing time. With as young as he is, this was a good move. The team needed a pitcher because the pen was taxed. Maybe the cornfields will do Murton some good.

by rob9802 on Jun 13, 2007 8:12 PM CDT up reply actions

This is the best move for a lot of reasons
He'll get regular ab's in AAA and if he does well, he'll be easier to trade.

I'm glad it's not Pagan. With the versatility of Pagan and Derosa, it appears the Cubs are heading into the direction I've been speculating for about a week now and that's Pagan in CF and Derosa in RF against Lefties.

JJ will be traded soon. YOu simply can not continue to have 2 LH hitters (Jones Floyd) rotating for 1 spot. How moronic can an organization get?

Anyone want to speculate as to what's going on with D-Lee?  He's been slumping a bit - is there a precedent for this cool down?  Also, not to state the obvious, but he's WAY behind his 2005 homerun pace.  Is his wrist 100% healthy?

What gives?  Am I overly concerned?

why Murton?
how come we just cant get rid of Jaque Jones. Murton is a whole lot better hitter who Lou is destroying by not giving playing time. I don't understand it..

by Chanman25 on Jun 13, 2007 6:35 PM CDT reply actions

Several million reasons why
JJ makes millions and Murton makes league minimum ( around
$400,000) JJ can NOT be sent to the minors and Murton can.
Murton's trade value is being killed by his lack of playing time but personally I am not sure sending to the minors after a year plus in the majors is the best way to solve that.

Apparently, he didn't get enough at-bats.  Yet, he had more at-bats than Cliff Floyd...

SORIANO! YESSSSSSSS! JIMBO!!!

by CubFaninCA on Jun 13, 2007 9:51 PM CDT up reply actions

Yes
If only he had "regular playing time" we'd get to see what a truly great ballplayer he really is.  Forget about the fact that he plays only one position and that position is taken by Soriano.  Forget about the fact that he hasn't done anything to show that he should be given any more playing time.  Forget about the fact that he's a clod defensively and on the bases and can't throw.  Forget about the fact that he has never shown any ability to hit the ball hard or drive in runs at the major league level.  If only Lou would've benched Soriano or Floyd more and trotted Murton out every game he'd magically turn into the second coming of Mickey Mantle.

by cubsbak on Jun 13, 2007 10:00 PM CDT up reply actions

No one is saying anything remotely like that.
Only that Murton, just like any ballplayer, would likely hit better with regular at-bats.

He'll get them at Iowa. Maybe that will make him easier to trade.

Al, come on
he didn't even hit the ball hard when he got a chance.  He has no speed, no D and certainly doesn't knock in runs.  He certainly has done NOTHING this year to impress a new manager and any fan watching.  He should have gone down before this.  He is lost at the plate and it is June, not spring training.  Produce or go.

Mariners note:
Word got around the Seattle clubhouse Wednesday that second baseman Jose Lopez's brother has died in a motorcycle collision in Venezuela. There aren't many more details available than that, although Lopez's teammates became his support group after word got out.

For the moment, at least, Lopez will stay with the team at his family's request, apparently because there would be no way for him to make it back to Venezuela in time for the funeral.
