Around SBN: Jeremy Lin And How The Pac-12 Missed Him

Sweet!

My friend Howard said he knew this was a big win because I stuck around for several minutes afterwards -- he's right, I usually duck out fairly quickly, to avoid traffic.

And oh, yes, was today's incredible 6-5 comeback Cubs win over the Brewers one to savor, and I'm still savoring it, as I am sure you are, sitting here in the quiet of my house, writing this recap. (And this is why it took a while to get this recap posted, since it took a while to get home, and to calm down a little!)

But before I describe the feeling and excitement of Aramis Ramirez' walkoff HR, let me give credit where credit is due: the much- and justifiably-maligned Cubs bullpen threw six shutout innings today, allowing three hits, two walks and striking out seven, in relief of Rich Hill, who had a horrific first inning reminiscent of the first inning the Cubs themselves had for Hill in Milwaukee in his first start of the year on April 6. Special props to rookie Billy Petrick, who in his second major league appearance shut down a pretty good hitting team on one hit, with two strikeouts, in his two innings (28 pitches, 21 strikes).

To be fair to Hill, two plays unhinged that first inning -- a ball just out of reach of Ramirez, which could have been a double play, and then a popup into right field that Mark DeRosa couldn't quite get to, which, after Johnny Estrada flied to right, could have ended the inning scoreless. Instead, the popup and Estrada's fly scored two runs, and with two men still on base, Kevin Mench -- who a lot of people here, myself included, thought the Cubs might acquire a couple of years ago -- smacked a three-run HR and the Brewers, shockingly, led 5-0. Many were afraid that the Crew from Milwaukee -- who had a very large and vocal contingent of fans driving the 90 miles south on I-94 on a coolish, 67-degree day, quite cool for late June, prompting me to not wear shorts today, and helping make this the largest crowd of the year so far, 41,909, and I'd expect tomorrow to exceed that number -- had made a statement.

But the Cubs chipped away. In fact, Hill, who threw an astonishing 45 pitches in the first inning, managed to get through the next two unscored-upon (and struck out the side in the second), but had to be yanked (as Lou Piniella said in his postgame press conference, "just as soon as we could get him out of there, we did") after three innings, having taken 92 pitches to get nine outs. (By contrast, Brewers rookie starter Yovani Gallardo also threw 92 pitches -- in SIX innings.)

Gallardo throws hard -- he struck out seven, including Alfonso Soriano twice. I was a little upset in the third, when Estrada dropped a third strike. Soriano didn't run -- but Estrada decided to embarrass him by throwing to first instead of simply tagging him out. Nothing happened as a result of this play, but I suspect the Cubs will remember. Despite the hard throwing, the Cubs chipped away, scoring twice in the fourth, the first on a weird play when Gallardo got in the way of Prince Fielder's play on Cliff Floyd's grounder to first; Derrek Lee was on third, holding up on the infield grounder, but scored as the Brewer fielders seemed confused. Then Aramis Ramirez, who had doubled and advanced to third on the goofy previous play, scored himself on a wild pitch.

So it went, 5-2 into the 7th, when Mike Fontenot singled in another run after a walk to Felix Pie (only his 11th of the year) and a pinch-single by Angel Pagan. Fontenot's getting so popular that this tongue-in-cheek suggestion by Cubs marketing head Jay Blunk might not be such a bad idea:

The Cubs plan on giving away 10,000 Michael Barrett bobbleheads at Sunday's game against Milwaukee, even though Barrett was cast aside 10 days ago.

It's an awkward position for the Cubs, but marketing chief Jay Blunk had a solution that might satisfy everyone.

"We have a lot of our interns working on it right now," Blunk said Thursday. "They're painting all the bobbleheads to look like Mike Fontenot."

Yes, he was kidding, but if Fontenot keeps up the great work he's doing now, maybe he WILL get his own bobblehead day. The only question is, who'll be taller: Fontenot or his bobblehead?

And yes, I'm kidding too.

So it went into the last of the 9th, the bullpen still mowing down Brewers (only five hits from the second inning on), setting up the last-inning heroics, and give credit to Soriano and Fontenot for the base hits that set up Derrek Lee's sacrifice fly, scoring the fourth run.

Ramirez smacked the first pitch he saw into the left-field bleachers, and there was absolutely no doubt from the second it hit the bat that he'd hit a walkoff -- bedlam ensued, both in the stands and at home plate, where the entire team met in the now-traditional "group-jump" that accompanies events like this. Someone pointed out that the Cubs haven't lost since Aramis returned from the DL (even though he didn't play in one of the seven games), and maybe that's not a coincidence. He's hitting .346/.385/.692 in the six games since his return, with 6 runs scored, three doubles, two HR and five RBI, and has played well in the field too (made a great snag on a Ryan Braun line drive in the 4th inning today). As my friend Dave said when the Cubs had Soriano and Fontenot on base in the 9th and Lee and Ramirez due up, "These are the guys who have to step up."

Well, they did, bigtime, and the "statement" made today, if there was one, was by the Cubs, who are now 6-4 vs. Milwaukee this season, cut a game off the lead, coming to within 6.5 games, and reaching .500 for the first time since May 10. They're 17-10 in June and 17-8 since the famous Mt. Piniella eruption on June 2. Coincidence? I think not -- Lou's tirade was admittedly calculated, and suddenly this team is, as I've been saying all week, getting solid pitching (and good bullpen work on days when the starters fail, like today), excellent defense, and hitting when they need it, such as today, and also on Monday when the bullpen imploded in the 9th inning.

Finally, it was nice to meet BCB reader Jettero2112 and his friend, who had come up from Louisville for this game; we spoke for a while before the game and about the second inning (he sat across the aisle from us) we looked at each other and just shrugged our shoulders, as if to say, "Here we go again." But after the game, I said to him, "Bet you're glad you came to THIS one!"

And if you haven't heard any of the calls of Aramis' walk-off, BCB reader John M has posted links to them in this diary, including Bob Uecker's Milwaukee radio call. Relive it! I know I will, since I didn't hear any of them myself, being at the ballpark. What a day! Savor this one, and let's hope it spurs the club on to even greater things.

Great win
That's normally the type of game the Cubs lose.
Plus, it was great to hear Len give his best Gus Johnson impersonation.

That's the type of game
every team normally loses.

I can't think of many teams that fall behind 5-0 in the first inning and come back to win on anything close to a regular basis.

That's true...
... which is why today's win is all that much the more sweet.

Clarify
I meant the Cubs are usually the one blowing a five-run lead. They've lost something like six games this year in which they've led by at least four. Sorry about the ambiguity. ;)

Fun day at the park
The fans were literally singing on the way out.  Al, you were lucky you got to see Aramis' ball.  Where I was sitting everyone stood up and I could not see a thing.  I figured it out once the cheering erupted. A few Brewer fans by us sat in stunned silence.  To add icing to the cake my son got a signed ball from Marshall and my husband was one of the lucky winners of a autographed Soriano photo.  Great day all the way around.

Al, I have not seen
the crawd that excited for a win since 2003. It was amazing, most everybody was into the game. Great crowd today! Hopefully tomorrow can be as exciting.

I also saw some stunned Brewer Fans, they had the 2004 look.

... the energy in the ballpark today, especially after the win, was something I haven't seen in a very long time.

Absolutely, I hope and THINK this can indeed carry over to tomorrow. The Brewers have to be absolutely stunned, indeed.

Great point!
I'm Mr. Glass-half-empty, but I haven't been that excited since the 3-1 lead on the Marlins in '03.

I was installing a baby gate with the radio on and I yelled "YEA" after the HR.  My wife, who was in the other room, said "I can't believe you put that up already"  I informed her that the Cubs just won, I wasn't elated about a baby gate installation.

Just a absolute clutch HR by a guy I wanted out of here in the past.

Well, this year he's changed my opinion.  Stud.

Now keep it up!!!

Out here in CO Springs CO....it was magic!
I decided to work from home, set up the patio with the TV and work computer and was going to take an afternoon off, which for me is quite unusual, after being 5 down I opened the computer and unproductively worked, transplanted tomatoes as tomatoes are tough to grow out here, and yes I noticed the bullpen held, the Cubs chipped away as they are supposed to and then the glorious 9th!

It is a statement game if they make July and August and September stick...GO CUBS...

Hey Al, do you remember
the comment you made, I believe, on the night before the season opener?  Something along the lines of driving by Wrigley and you just had a sense that something special was going to take place here this year.

After games like today's (which in and of itself was pretty awesome) makes me think you may have been right in your assertion.

This is beautiful
I had to work today, so couldn't pay much attention to the game.  When I had a chance to check the score, it was 5-0 in the bottom of the 1st.  I said CRAP!  Next I checked, it was 5-2.  I said to myself... a long ways to go!  Then, we had a "safety call" at work.  For those of you not familiar with the military, that meant go to the community center/club and drink.  I turned on WGN for a second and it was 5-3 in the 7th.  I resigned myself to a loss while enjoying man's best friend, beer.

I come home, read Al's post, and figure out A-Ram wins it with a walk-off into left field.  SWEET!  This is a win I didn't think would happen today... but I'm glad damn it did.

Onto tomorrow... and GO CUBS GO!!!

I watched
the first inning and said to myself, "what a way to start out the biggest series of the year (so far)." The good thing was that is was the first, lots of baseball yet to play. If we can chip away, we'll be ok. Just have to get past their phenom rookie starter and into the pen.

I met my wife for lunch and did a couple of errands, came home and went on the computer to listen to Pat & Ron. At that point it was the top of the 8th, we are in striking distance, yes! Listened to the rest of the game and when I heard Ronnie screaming, I ran and turned the TV on to see the bedlam!!! GO CUBS! What a freakin' game!

Hope this is the point where we make our move and Milwaukee starts to unravel just a bit.

I am STILL pumped up!!!

I had to be in Decatur for work today
I kept checking the radio all the way down to see if WGN's signal would carry that far.  I got back in the car to head back home at about 2:15-2:30, and was shocked and disappointed to hear Pat and Ron say the score was 5-0 Milwaukee.  I seriously considered just turning it off right then and listening to my I-Pod, but I stuck with it.

Boy, am I glad I did.  If any other motorists saw me pumping my fist, screaming, and generally behaving like a maniac, I'm sure they wondered what was going on (unless they had the game going too).  The Cubs, and Aramis Ramirez in particular, deserve credit for making a long boring drive into something very exciting and memorable.

Milwaukee
is still a young team, and hopefully a game (or series) like this can send them into a tailspin. They've gone through a pretty bad slump already (was it 5-15 at one point?), and I think they're a team vulnerable, or I should say 'more vulnerable', to slides.

Milwaukee is a good team. But I don't think they're quite as good as some believe...they might take the division, but I don't see them running away with it like most would predict after watching the first half.

MARQUIS! YES, MARQUIS!

by thekansasian on Jun 29, 2007 9:05 PM CDT reply actions

Was out of the house
at the gym, came in and saw the score, I was upset at Hill. Big series and give up a 5 spot in the first, said to myself damn have to get this series, facing Sheets tommorrow.
But give this team credit, kept chipping away, the pen which has been solid held. Fontenot was the key this game again, knocked in a key run and got another key hit in the ninth.
Also felt if Rammy gets another shot, after striking out in the seventh he would get a hit.
Had the Brewer announcers on the MLB package, when Fontenot got the hit, they said this is the situation we don't want to be in, Lee followed by Ramirez.
Pie and Hill need to start playing better, Pie seems lost at the plate and over matched, I sure hope he gets it going again. The bottom of the order of Bowen/Hill and Pie, Izzy and Theriot are at this point brutal.
But Hey, 7 in a row, keep the run going.

Another nice sign
Watching the replays (which I can't get enough of), one thing that struck me was watching the other players reactions to Ramirez's home run.  They're all jumping around together, like little kids.  I don't know if this is the case of a team with good chemistry or that winning makes everything better, but still, it's nice.

Chicken or egg?
Which comes first, chemistry or winning? That's almost impossible to figure out.

But there is no doubt that winning breeds winning. After a streak like this, the guys on the team have got to wake up every day excited to come to the park, and that energy has to be reflected in their play on the field. It sure was yesterday.

I kept staring at my scorecard at home, making sure it was true!

winning....it is an emotional belief
Understand there is a concept of playing for a team, a belief system develops that positive things happen, this goes to the coaching reinforcing the aspects of the ultimate goal, winning...and the chemistry is responding for plays executed in the course of winning.

Pie...walks...is eventually driven home by a base hit...Soriano and Fontenot get on base and score....

bullpen does their job holding and giving the offense a chance...

Uecker's call
is priceless.

I can't imagine what he was thinking other than, "Oh wow, he didn't just do that, did he?"

I listened to Uecker earlier, for a short period. Does he always call games without color?

He's a pro. Maybe a bit dull, I think, but a pro.

I believe...
...Uecker and Scully are about the only ones left that still call games without color. And, they both do absolutely wonderful jobs - they are both baseball treasures!

What a great day - let's go get 'em tomorrow.

I have to say
that the local guy for the Saltdogs calls the game without color.

It's perfect for him because he can't shut his trap.

I love baseball.

Saturday's game in all markets nationwide
I'm reposting this from another thread for those who might miss it.

If your Fox station is showing another game tommorow you can tune in to Fox Sports en Español (FSE), if available in your cable or satellite lineup. They will show the Cubs-Brewers game nationwide. Audio is in Spanish. The video feed is the same for both the Fox Network and FSE.

Here's a link.

It's all evening out.
This team was NOT as bad as it played earlier.
And, is it a coincidence The Cubs haven't lost since dumping Michael Barrett?

The Padres are happy. Maybe this is a trade that benefits both teams. In reality, those are the best trades.

I had to leave -- but I thought this game wasn't at all over, so I rolled tape in the 5th. I checked my phone later, and saw the final.

I just knew, this game was far from over.  So many times -- "I just knew" is usually not in my rear view...

So, perhaps there's a little paradigm shift beginning to happen here. The culture may be changing in that clubhouse. The dissidents are (almost) gone.  The country club memberships have been revoked by Lou. It's time to play real baseball, without excuses. There are plenty of games to play.

In Cubs history, this team has NEVER come from behind to win ANYTHING of note -- by that, I mean a division, etc, etc. So...and I'm sorry to say this but -- Why Not US? This meant nothing in Dusty's clubhouse, but everything with a pro leading this team.

Things happen. Things are overdue. Let's go game to game, and enjoy it. 2 out of 3 is very important in this series.

Can't believe we have to endure Matt Vasgergian on Fox tomorrow, but that's the way it goes....

I was jumping up and down so hard
that I thought I was gonna fall through the floor.

Un-friggin-believable. What a game. What a day.

And Al... so far this week, the Cubs have done everything we've wanted. We knew it was a BIG, BIG week. Who could imagine that it would've gone this well so far.

WOW.

Yeah,
I yelled so loud (including some excited obscenties), that my 72 year old neighbor lady came down to check on me, make sure everything was OK.

I told her I got overexcited about the baseball game - she asked, "The Cubs game?"

"I said yeah?"

She replied, "I totally understand."

HOW COOL IS THAT?

I said " thank you God "
and I'm an atheist !!   Just kidding.  I did feel the Baseball Gods were smiling at our team though.  And I get choked up everytime when the team is out in the field jumping up and down celebrating !!!  The fans are going wild !!!! The fact that they gutted it out is a true testament.  I love baseball and I love the Cubs.

Baseball gods... yes
I was working the buses that were coming yesterday and a car pulled up and let out 3 nuns, one of which had a sign that said "GO CUBS" so yes, there was some divine intervention yesterday.

We have to pull streaks like this
Man, just think where this team could be if they won even half of their 1 run games before this last streak. Could have had at least 1 or 2 more if Barrett was traded a month and a half earlier than he was.  The one in Texas(5-6 loss) was a real kick in the crotch. I know its a sweeping generalization but if we could have done some of these things in winnable games, it would have been the Brewers trailing us by 6.5 games.

What a great win and what a great story for Cliff
I listened to this one on the radio after I decided that the iPhone line was way too long.  Thank goodness I did.  What an amazing win!

It's kinda funny, I went to a Yankees tampa game in the bronx in their opening homestand, in the bleachers, wearing my cubs hat.  I got totally razzed and loved it.  one guy said, "The Cubs? Are you f-ing kidding me?!"

Who's laughing now, sucka?

But anyhow, both the Trib and the Suntimes posted a story that Cornelius Floyd is getting healthier and his doctors recommended that he get out of the hospital for this cubs game.  This game!  They brought him over in an ambulance with all the medical equipment and the team put him up in a luxury suite. Cliff was ready to sock one out for his dad but Rammy beat him to it.  I'm surprised Papa floyd didn't have a heart attack.

Man, I gotta say that stories like this make me love that Cliff decided to play in Chicago.  Pretty awesome stuff.

I'm not afraid of anything. to be honest with you, I kicked some dirt on a guy and that was it.

by bmeteor on Jun 30, 2007 7:28 AM CDT reply actions

I saw the picture in the Trib
I thought what a great game for him to come to. Those are the kind of stories that you like to see, and the fact that the Cubs won made it just that much better. Here's hoping his father continues to get better.

The one prior to yesterday...
... was this game vs. the Rangers on June 9, when Cordero gave up four runs with two out and nobody on base in the last of the 9th.

Also two other key plays I saw yesterday:
  1. The bloop single in the third SHOULD have been caught by a right fielder with any sort of mobility (If only cliffy could just DH)
  2. DLEEs heads up baserunning when Fielder got tangle up with the pitcher

Just finished..
Watching yesterday's bottom half of the ninth inning for the 12th time.
It is just great to see all those smiling faces, people jumping up and down.

Some people are calling it luck, some people are saying gods are finally being kind to us, some people are saying its the team but what ever it is after watching all those smiling faces WE DEFINITELY DESERVE ALL THIS AFTER ALL THOSE YEARS. Whatever it might be I would say ITS HIGH TIME !!!

When was the Cubs last 7+ winning streak?
I'll be taking my boys to the Gala Fest at Main Beach in Crystal Lake today, so I'll have to listen on my radio. I hope I get to listen to Ron and Pat go off again like yesterday, only way before the bottom of the 9th. It looks like the freak losses are being balanced out by freak wins. I'm freraking out. Go Cubs!!!

Bliss
Total Cubs Bliss happened yesterday. I was listening to the majority of the game on 1290 while I was painting the garage. Once they started scoring, I couldn't resist watching the last couple of innings on WGN. I am sooo glad I did!

Had the windows been open, the neighbors surely would have called the police thinking I was being murdered. I screeched like a 13 year old girl and jumped up and down just like the Cubs did. I went outside and grabbed my W flag and swung it around a couple times.

To all of those who cracked jokes when I got my flag about how it will last forever for as little as it will be out in the weather, suck on this winning streak!!! Keep it up Cubs!!!

It isn't near as important to be loved for yourself as it is to be loved in spite of yourself.

Holy crap!!
We were packing to come home yesterday and caught the score and it was 5-3 Brewers so figured the Cubs were going to lose. Didn't check in till just now. I'm so happy the Cubs won and I'm so happy I'm home so I can finally watch a game on tv. I'm a happy girl. :-)
