Around SBN: Jeremy Lin And How The Pac-12 Missed Him

For Your Listening Pleasure (Walk-Off Calls x 3)

Just thought I'd cut and paste these from MLB Audio and the WGN post game feed - the walk off home run calls by Len Kasper and Bob Brenly, Pat Hughes and Ron Santo, and Bob Uecker doing the  Milwaukee radio call (for contrast).

Someone said Len sounded like he was going through puberty for his call of the Soriano walk off hit against the Rockies in the big comeback last week. Guess what - he's still making the big change!

Warning: these were hacked together quickly and recorded at different levels. Turn UP your computer for Len and Bob, then turn it DOWN before you listen to Pat and Ron or else you might wake someone up on the next block.

Note: there's actually something in common between Bob Uecker and Ron Santo...see if you can figure out what it is.

Thanks!
I had to hear the Pat 'n Ron call again -- Ronnie is absolutely ecstatic.

Ronnie is great
I had to listen to it a few times.

Thanks so much for these!
Great listening, especially for me since I was at the ballpark. Len Kasper rose to the occasion today -- great call!

Cool
I was at work and didn't get to hear it. Sounds like Al hearing may be impaired for a while from the crowd noise. I guess we know there was more than 50% Cub fans at the game today. Wow...

thanks for these
i could listen to kasper's call for the rest of the night. i think i will...until my wife gets home.

THANK YOU from two fair weather fans...
I called both my father and father-in-law bitten by too many disappointments who turned off the game after the Cubs went down 5-0

I called and played the replays back over the phone....it was precious....

Santo of course is the best....his emotions fall out of the booth....his laugh and then Uuecker's dead pan is best.

Milw-09-24-98--Brown in for defense--bases loaded--flyball--HE DROPPED THE BALL!!!NO NO NO, cubs lose 8-7

Awesome!
I was watching the top of the ninth in the office, and listened to the bottom on XM.  I just about caused an accident in DC.

Disappointed Uecker didn't say "Mench is gonna need a visa to catch this one."

Milwaukee Radio Guy????
You're kidding - right?

That's somewhat of an insult to a broadcasting icon, whatever his name is.

Pass me a Miller Lite, Mr. Belvedere..........geez........

by tville on Jun 29, 2007 6:43 PM CDT reply actions

You're right
I haven't heard him call a game in forever and though I knew he did (some of?) their games, I mostly remember him as a guy from Gillette commercials or something like that in the 70s, possibly some game shows, and maybe a few games back-up catching. I know I'm forgetting a movie classic or two.

by TexasCubbieFan on Jun 30, 2007 2:01 AM CDT up reply actions

too funny
Was that really Uecker? I guess I haven't heard him in a long time.

The thing in common between him and Santo was that they both reacted INSTANTLY to the hit and knew it was game over.

by JohnM on Jun 29, 2007 6:46 PM CDT reply actions

Uecker
sounds different on the radio.  I love listening to him, though.  If I remember correctly, Pat was his color guy, I think, when he announced up in Milwaukee.  Or I might have that backwards - but I'm pretty sure they were a tandem before Pat came to Chicago 10 yrs ago or so.
Rob Dibble is a juvenile. Why is he on my XM radio? Why is he on my TV? Please, just, make him stop.

Old Uke
is also another class act....was it some 25 years ago that he was actually in a sit-com? (Mr. Belvidere)

I know he likes living in Milwaukee. Had he left that smaller market, he'd be better known, and would have icon status in baseball broadcasting.

But props to Bob Uecker for being happy for what he has. Lots to be said for that.

Man I like the playbacks!
Thanks a lot for posting those calls.  I had a hell of a day at the office for a Friday, and finally managed to wrap things up and click on gameday in the top of the 9th.  I needed that.

by tex on Jun 29, 2007 8:50 PM CDT reply actions

And with that...
Aramis Ramirez will always be remembered as the Cub who did the Brewer's on that day. A day of horrible embarassing calls by Froemming, a day of Rich Hill appearing down and out, and a day of our team coming back to beat the team in their way of a playoff appearance.

Will it be the spark? Stay tuned Cub fans.

Donut jokes are not funny. They're way past funny. They're frickin' hilarious.

by MaTheMeatloaf on Jun 29, 2007 9:01 PM CDT reply actions

Good point...........
........on Froemming.  He was awful.

He won't be missed when he retires later this year.

by tville on Jun 29, 2007 9:38 PM CDT up reply actions

Yabbut....
...he missed calls everywhere. And no one can convince me otherwise that the only reason Froemming called out Braun was because Braun started sprinting down the line before the call was made. He showed up Froemming, and no way was he going to get away with it.
Santo Forever!

The more I think about this
and listen, the more I think that these radio calls will go down in baseball history.

Just beautiful. The contrast between Uecker and Santo, let alone Pat is just astounding.

I absolutely love baseball on the radio. Say what you will about Santo, but for heaven's sake listen to this recording before you say it.

Astounding.

It's just about as great as The Shot Heard Round the World. It might even be better.

Hearing Ron laugh after all the mayhem is just great.

I love them all, including Uecker's.
The thing about Uecker's call that I like is first, how quickly he knew it and secondly, how freaking loud the crowd is through his call.  I mean, I'm sure Al (and everyone else who was there) could attest it was much louder, but it was just this huge WHOOOSH! and gives me chills listening to it.  Really good stuff John thanks.

Thank you
for posting these. I wanted to hear Pat and Ron as soon as the game was over. I had been yelling in my living room, and figured Ron must be yelling too. It's such a delight to hear his reaction.

Al, you're right, Kaspar did himself proud on this one. A nice set of calls that I can listen to all night.

by helen on Jun 30, 2007 2:22 AM CDT reply actions

Len
One thing I liked about Len's call was that after calling the home run, he stopped talking and let the action on the field speak for itself.  If you watch the replay (not that I have a dozen times or so :) he just lets the images and crowd noise take over for a bit.  I think, especially on TV, there wasn't much more to be said.

I really like...
... announcers who do this. They understand that people can see what's going on and want to savor the moment without any inane comments. Good for Len!

Brilliant
I don't think I could possibly count the number of times I've watched / listened to the call of both Len and Pat/Ron. I teared up when I saw it live, and I still tear up hours later. Absolutely amazing.

It looked bad, but I felt things turn around dramatically in the 4th when we got the 'strike 'em out, throw 'em out' double play. Ah, the importance of a catcher that can nail base stealers. That followed by Ramirez and his leaping snag to rob Braun of a hit to end the inning gave the Cubs the momentum back. From that point I felt that if the bullpen could hold them, that the offense would win it.

In the ninth, I was just hoping that Lee wouldn't bounce into a double play, and was happy when he got under one. Ramirez is the guy I wanted up there in that situation. It's too bad, what happened to Lee's power? But more, I can't recall the last time he had a hit in a big spot for the Cubs. He has 40 RBI, which is ok, but he's had chances for a lot more. Of course homers would fix that, I just don't know if we're gonna get it.

Anyway, I'm so happy I didn't abandon the game after Hill threw 90 to get through 3 innings, and you know, do something productive with an otherwise free day. I wish this team always rewarded me for such decision making.

For any of our hearing impaired friends:
Here's the transcript of the Pat and Ron broadcast:

Pat:

Cubs trail 5-4 and here's Ramirez with two down, driving in the air, deep left field, it's gotta chance...

Cubs win!  Cubs win!  Cubs win!  Aramis Ramirez, a game winning two run homer! Cubs win again!  7 in a row!

Ron:

WHOOOOOAAA!!! YEEEEEESSSSSSSSSSSS!!!!!
YEEEEEEEEESSSSSSSS!!!!!
YEEEEEEEEESSSSSSSS!!!!!
MWAH-HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!

I can't stop listening to this
It's been 21 hours and I still get goosebumps.

Thank you to the schedulers who have the Cubs out of town next week so this was my birthday game.

I think the game can be a turning point for the good for us and bad for the Brewers.

9 games til the break.  7 of 9 including the next 2 would be nice.  Go into the break 5 over 500 and hopefully about 3 games out.

When I got home I put in a recording of the song "Nothings Gonna Stop Us Now" which felt really good.
