Open Thread: Cubs vs. Brewers, Saturday 6/30, 2:55 CT

Just a reminder: despite what printed schedules may say, today's game begins at 2:55 CT, having been switched to accomodate Fox-TV. Not that this really matters, but the Cubs are 4-1 so far in 2007 in games televised on Fox.

As of early this morning the Fox Sports page that usually lists where each game is being carried hadn't been updated since last week. Today, in addition to Cubs/Brewers, Fox is carrying Tigers/Twins and Mets/Phillies, so your guess is as good as mine as to where the game will be seen. You'll want to turn the sound off, too, if you can watch it: Matt Vasgersian and Mark Grace are the broadcast team.

You'll note I haven't said anything about today's game. You know, "kiss of death" and all that. Instead, check out this story which appeared on the front page of today's Sun-Times, about Cliff Floyd's dad Cornelius, who is recovering from heart surgery, and whose doctors arranged to bring him to the ballpark yesterday, thinking it would do him some good. It did:

"This made me really happy, and I'm so glad I did it," he said. "It gave me a chance to get some of that fresh air, and get that summertime feeling back in the body."

"There's no better place for that than Wrigley Field."

Damn straight!
 Today's Starting Pitchers
Sean Marshall
 S. Marshall
Cubs
vs. Ben Sheets
 B. Sheets
Brewers
4-2 W-L 9-3
2.44 ERA 3.09
34 SO 70
11 BB 23
6 HR 12
vs. Mil -- vs. Cubs
Marshall's only career appearance vs. Milwaukee was this 14-6 Cub win last September 26; half the Brewers in that lineup aren't even on the team any more.

Ben Sheets used to beat the Cubs like the proverbial drum; however, in the last three years it's been the other way around -- in nine starts vs. the Cubs since July 2004, Sheets is 0-5 with a 5.50 ERA and ten HR allowed, including a 6-3 Cub win in Milwaukee on April 7. That's the Sheets we hope we see today. He's been very consistent most of the year, not allowing more than three runs in any start since April 15.

Here's today's Mediacenter, for those who have MLB audio.

As much as I enjoy the 9th inning heroics,
let's get a lead and build on it and not let it get to the last batter today lol

I just got off the phone with Comcast
They said that FOX SPorts has determined that the Cubs are the national coverage game today...originally it was the Mets
Milw-09-24-98--Brown in for defense--bases loaded--flyball--HE DROPPED THE BALL!!!NO NO NO, cubs lose 8-7

Cool!
That means the Mets/Phillies go to the East Coast, the Tigers/Twins go to their own states and maybe some surrounding areas, and the Cubs/Brewers go everywhere else. (Of course, that may mean the Tigers/Twins go to parts of Iowa and Michigan where there are a lot of Cub fans.)

In general, of course. Usually they do something stupid like putting the Mets game in Los Angeles.

As the saying goes, "check local listings".

Fox Sports Espanol
will be broadcasting Cubs/Brewers this afternoon here in LA while the local Fox affliate has the Mets game.

National interest in Mets/Phillies? Who is the genius in the production office that scheduled that one?

Took me a while too...
What it is showing is the % chance that a team will win at that point of the game.  Before Aramis HR the Brewers had a 90% chance to win pretty much the entire game.  Then he hit the HR and the graph plumetted(sp) like the stock market did in 1929.

Yeah...
the blue line makes sense.  I couldn't figure out what "leverage index" means.

But it is fun to see that plummet to 0% win probability on Ramirez's swing.

by SouthernCub on Jun 30, 2007 11:42 AM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

The graph
I think the blue line says that basically, from the 1st inning, there was a 90+% chance that the Brewers would win...Aram's HR then results in the precipitous dive from 90+% to 0%

not sure what stats they use for the percentages, but the "asymptote" in the bottom of the ninth is pretty hilariously demonstrates that the whole concept of the graph is retarded

Mark Grace as a announcer
I get the impression that not many are impressed with Gracies broadcasting skills?  Or is it just Varsegian?

Personally, I think Gracie, and his two packs of winstons per day voice, are alright in the booth...but maybe I am just blinded by the fact that it is gracie.

Yeah
I love Gracie, but he needs to put down the mic and slowly back away...

by Tangled Up In Blue on Jun 30, 2007 11:16 AM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

And it's weird
because Gracie was such a quote-machine as a player that we all just naturally assumed that he'd be a great announcer.

But now he spits out clichés and inanities in the booth that would have embarrassed him if he'd have said them as a player.

Len
I've always liked Len and I think most of the criticism has been unwarranted.  But one criticism I've read of him that I do think has some merit is that he doesn't rise to the excitement of big moments and connected to that, he has a bad home run call.

He may be improving that.  I think we were all happy with Kasper's call on Ramirez's HR.  I'm wondering if "Oh baby!" could become his "Holy Cow!"

Len and Bob
both do a great job. I have been trying to watch some non-Cubs games to get a better feeling for whats going on in MLB in general. I am not impressed with many of the commentators. Some have catchy phrases and special things they do, but not many. They don't paint a good idea of what is really happening on the field.

And it seems to me that one of the two commentators annoy me, if not both, on Fox Saturday games. I can't remember if it was Girardi or whoever was with him , but someone stunk it up bad earlier this year. Maybe I have just grown accustomed to Len and Bob's style and that's ok with me.

It isn't near as important to be loved for yourself as it is to be loved in spite of yourself.

I used to be a big Grace fan.....
...until he left the Cubs for the Diamondbacks and started to crap on the Cubs. He does the color for Diamondbacks TV, and although the Cubs and Grace kissed and made up at the last Cubs Convention, he still does it now and then. Moreover, listening to him makes me want to continually clear my own throat.

Today's A Tall Order....
...Sheets is their stud, especially with Capuano being out. While the Cubs have had some success against him, it'll just be another big hole in the beer keg that is the Brewers' heart if the Cubs can beat him after what happened yesterday. I don't see how a game like yesterday doesn't get in the Brewers' heads. Take away the first inning, which was helped more than a little by some bad defense, and the Cubs dominated the game.

by BeerCub on Jun 30, 2007 11:37 AM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

It would be tricky to DL Jones...
if they're trying to trade him.  You can't trade a guy on the DL.  I'm not saying it wouldn't make sense, just that it would delay any possibility of a trade for 15 days.

Unless of course they DFA him.

Either way, I think Izturis is safe.  If he goes, then we only have one backup infielder.

by SouthernCub on Jun 30, 2007 11:40 AM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Yeah
I thought about that with Jones, but the trading thing isn't going so hot for Hendry right now anyway, so what the heck.
Santo Forever!

by BeerCub on Jun 30, 2007 11:45 AM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Yeah...
it could be one of those cases where Hendry knows he can't move Jones right now.  So he will get Jones out of the way until the trade deadline, then bring him back off the DL in time to make a move.  It's not like Jones is bringing anything to the table by being active anyway.

Didn't know you could fiddle roster like this
Seems a little shaky pitch a guy 2 of 3 days or til he can't go, then recall another (similar?) pitcher...didn't see enough to judge but thought Petry showed more promise than Cherry??

Next week 7 games on road will be interesting test altho 2 bad teams, Wash can score...seems we're tap-dancing around or avoiding the issue with wanting 12 pitchers now until Hendry can make a move...they could send down Theriot the way Fontenot is hitting....altho I like both...Izzy and Jones aren't helping much but still could prove to have some value, esp. defensively for JJ...throw him in there a game and see what happens maybe he could get hot for a few weeks (we're gonna need to find some offense when Lee's suspension kicks in, next week?)

Sorry for rambles, killin time before Sat. game hate these late starts

by writerinwrigley on Jun 30, 2007 1:18 PM CDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Not sure
I understand this move either. Wouldn't have made more sense to send The Riot down? (As much as it pains me to write that.)Even Izzy? We still only have 11 pitchers and a bullpen that was taxed pretty hard yesterday.

Is there a move out there, either including JJ or not, that makes sense. The list of trade partners for JJ gets smaller with each passing day.

by Tangled Up In Blue on Jun 30, 2007 1:27 PM CDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Well..
Petrick threw 30 pitches yesterday.  He can't pitch today.  Wuertz threw over 20.  He'd probably be the last guy up.  That leaves you with Howry, Marmol, Eyre, and Ohman.  Is that the bullpen you want to face the Brewers with today?

You might send Theriot down, but then Izturis is the only bench infielder.  What if somebody gets hurt but not serious enough to be DL'd? Then Izzy would have to play every day until then.

Petrick threw well, but he'll be back.  Our bullpen is very thin today.  We'd be screwed if Marshall sucks today if we didn't recall a pitcher.

You're right
It makes sense to bring up a pitcher. I like the move to add another arm, just wasn't sold on sending an arm down. Now we have to wait to bring Petrick back up.
You are also right in sending Theriot or Izzy would have thinned our bench.

by Tangled Up In Blue on Jun 30, 2007 1:41 PM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Petrick was good ...
But he's not quite ready just yet. He's got to get better at locating his second and third pitches. It's better to send him down after having success than keeping him up here and having him possibly go through some struggles. He'll be back up in September though, maybe sooner.

Wasn't it about 430 which is right before the official start of summer?

That means we haven't lost since the start of summer.

I just want the Cubs to top the Bears NFC Title Game as my highlight of the year.

Not a bad move
We cant give Jones or Izturis away. We need fresh arms for today and tomorrow. Next week is the Nationals and the Pirates. You have to play the odds with the opponent you are facing.

The only part that sucks is Cherry never once has looked as good as Petrick, but I am sure we will see Billy back up after the break.

Anyone have any thoughts on something I can do to keep busy over the AS break? Off days drive me crazy, I cant imagine what I am going to do for 4 days.

Research the
D Lee phenomenon:  Despite being somewhere around the top 5 of most offensive NL stats (including a gaudy .375   batting average with RISP), he has hit only 6 homers and has only about 40 RBI's.  Many are saying he's actually hurting the team.

Although I think that idea is totally absurd, the question remains:  Where has Derrik's power gone and how has it affected the team?

by BlueSox on Jun 30, 2007 2:07 PM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Maybe the wrist
Maybe something with the wrist is not affecting his swing and his eye but the power he has in said swing.
I just want the Cubs to top the Bears NFC Title Game as my highlight of the year.

by cubstoseriesby100 on Jun 30, 2007 2:13 PM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I've heard that before,
but then why is he still creaming the ball hard, but not on enough of an upward trajectory to get it out?

Is there someone who knows if it's possible to have a wrist injury that impedes his swing only when he swings upwards?

by BlueSox on Jun 30, 2007 2:19 PM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Maybe he's decided ...
To hit for average rather than for only power--which A-Ram falls prey to ...

Though D-Lee is in a tad of a slump, he's still this team's best player on a talented team (well, except for Izuseless)!

BTW--what is happening to Sean Marshall?  This looks like a repeat of yesterday's first inning.  HE NEEDS TO SETTLE DOWN! Perhaps it's the national exposure?

One of the BAD things about NYC
I will NEVER get a Cubs game on Fox. It ALWAYS the Mets or
Yankees. The ONLY one that they had this year was the Phillies
Saturday since both Mets &  Yankees had night games and that didn't help as I was IN Philadelphia for that ugly loss

A note on sending players up and down to stretch out BP
and bench. This is TERRIBLY short sighted management. Next
year or the after when we really need to send a young player down who is actuallly struggling and needs work, we will be screwed because he will be OUT OF OPTIONS.

Clarification
...about the "out of options" thing.

by BlueSox on Jun 30, 2007 2:21 PM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Very complicated
Basically MLB has very precise system limiting the number of times players can be brought up and sent back to the minors based on days of service in both .  For instance I know Ohman is out of options so if he sucks the Cubs have to release him or at least put him through wavers he can't be sent down. Obviously Murton had options left so he got sent down. What I am saying is that if they are in fact bringing back Cherry for the SECOND time they have blown two of his options. In a related note I know that by bringing up Pie as early as they did they lost a full year of keeping under control. I believe if he had played something like his first 25 games in the minors the Cubs would have had him for another year. I think Hendry and others are just living for the moment and not thinking of reprecussions of some of this
Pie I think was necessary but shuttling Cherry. Gallagher Petrick
etc may well come back to haunt them
Arizona Phil at The Cub Reporter blog is the expert on this and usually posts a complete detail of player options and remaining years under control of club there several times a year.

First Marquis, then Hill, and now Marshall.  Can we get a quality start out of someone before our bullpen is exhausted?  These five inning or less starts are going to take their toll.

Lee probably not looking for the change
Sheets has been throwing a lot of changeups this year, particularly his last few starts.

If Lee wasn't aware of that, and he was thinking Sheets is straight curve/fastball like before - he probably saw a pitch that wasn't a curve, figured fastball, and was thus surprised when the bottom dropped out.

sheets
showed him the change earlier in the AB, but maybe as you say he was looking fastball and got a change.

Changeup
True, but Sheets using it as more than a early/midAB show-me pitch is relatively new.

Sheets and Lee have both been around, so as a hitter, there's probably a bit of ingrained thinking against a guy you've faced a bunch - particularly on a 3-2 pitch.

ben sheets
is using every single inch of that wind blowing in. he's going to give the cubs some runs today. they just have to shut out the brewers going forward.

Grace
"Hit on the Screws"
"getting smoked"
"the outs are hard hit"
"runs are tough to come by"
"special fans, love affair"
"wind kept it in the park"

That's the clever Gracie in one half inning.  We just need one reference to a slump buster and he may have used up his vocabulary.

do you think
the mini-blowup of starting pitching has anything to do with an unfamiliar batterymate?  how many games ago was the barrett trade?

What is worse, Jones in or Eyre in??

wouldn't say that
Marshall didn't leave Lou with a ton of options. Lou could have put Felix in center, but otherwise ...

Actually, getting JJ some playing time isn't a bad idea. We're already down by 5 -- maybe JJ will think it's last season again and go back to his 2006 form?

Good point,
but why not hope for Pie to break out instead of JackWeee?  At least Pie has a much better chance to prevent more runs from scoring than Jones.

they've got to play him and give him a chance to make himself a marketable player.

sportsmanship, running with a 5-run lead. didn't the brewers get sore about that when the cubs thumped them in milwaukee?

But I don't see it happening today. Marshall's short outing really hemmed us in -- especially after the short start by Hill yesterday.

well
sheets looks pretty hittable today and after the lidging that ramirez gave cordero yesterday, i'd say the confidence meter isn't too high over in the brewers' pen. this game isn't over, but it's not looking good right now.

honestly
I think we can take something very important today.

Going into this game, I thought the Cubs were about even with the Brewers, but that we started slow and lost more heartbreakers.

But I think we're seeing that the Brewers are significantly better than we are. Say a 9 compared with a 7.5. I'm not writing us off. Trades, injuries, strong or weak second halves could change things.

But right now, the Brewers are a better team.

by elgato on Jun 30, 2007 3:59 PM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

agree with you completely
there lineup is really good and their starting pitching and bullpen are better than ours. they are a really solid squad and i was relieved to get that one yesterday because i knew the next 2 days would be tough, especially with marquis going tomorrow. have a hard time imaging anything good coming from him these days i just dont think he is very good. also, once we hit .500 we usually decide to head back south. whats the most we have been over .500 all year 1 game??

by bennyha on Jun 30, 2007 4:05 PM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

we still have holes
Yesterday was huge, because if we lost that, we could have easily been 10.5 games back on Monday. Worst that can happen now is 8.5, which wouldn't be good, but it's not impossible to make up.

Yes
I live in South Carolina, so no place has the game on due to FOX regional coverage......and dont you have to pay at Gameday Audio?? I have extra innings, but fox games arent carried on that.

Not
sure about payment for Gameday. I dont understand the licensing for Fox. Believe it or not I was hoping to catch the Phils game today. I went to high school with Happ. How does he look?

Ehh
Happ looks decent. Hes young, they were making a big deal out of his name, J.A.

But nah, I'm not going to pay 20.00 for the audio, when I have extra innings, and there on there every game. Theres probably four games a year like this that I cant watch or hear. Its ok.

Gameday Audio
is actually $15 a year.

I don't know if that makes any difference to you--that you'd pay 15 bucks but not 20.

But no, wherever you are in these United States, there is only going to be one game on TV this afternoon.  That's what FOX wants.

Last Appearance?
Is this the last appearance in Cubs' uniforms for Scott Eyre and Jacque Jones?

The problem is you don't want to just give them away, but, you have to show other teams that they have some value.  The only way to do that is to play them.

Just got home from work...be thankful that this can only be one loss at worst. The Brewers have just brought out the bats like crazy today, and Marshall's ever so slightly off. It's that old Yogiism: Good hitting always beats good pitching, and vice versa.
