Around SBN: Jerry Sandusky's Wife Tries To Run A Reporter Over

Open Thread: Cubs vs. Brewers, Sunday 7/1, 1:20 CT

This isn't overhype: the Cubs really must win today.

Despite yesterday's loss, the Cubs finished June with a 17-11 record (17-9 since the "benchmark" of Lou Piniella's tirade on June 2). Win this series and you've accomplished something against a very good team. After today, the Brewers and Cubs will head out on the same road trip, playing the Nationals and Pirates for a week before the All-Star break.

Non-game-related note: this story is a few days old, but says that the Cubs are among four teams (Arizona, Boston, NY Yankees) who are interested in acquiring Eric Gagne. I say, go for it, as long as you don't have to give up too much for him. And see if you can include Jacque Jones and/or Cesar Izturis in the deal.

Brewers
5-4 W-L 6-6
3.46 ERA 5.06

vs. Mil -- vs. Cubs
This is a pitching rematch of a 7-2 Cub win in Milwaukee on June 4; Marquis threw pretty well that day, allowing two runs (one earned) in 5.1 IP. He left the game trailing 2-1, and Carlos Marmol got the win that day when the Cubs exploded for five runs in the 7th. Over their respective careers, neither Bush nor Marquis has done that well against today's opponent: Marquis, 4-6, 4.23 in 12 starts vs. Milwaukee; Bush, 1-4, 4.15 in 7 starts vs. the Cubs.

Today's game is, as was Friday's, on WGN, FSN Wisconsin and at the Mediacenter.

Here's to Marquis...
...having a great outing! We really need to give our bullpen some rest.

Go Cubbies - time to start a brand new winning streak!

Definitely...
I keep getting the feeling that EVENTUALLY he's going to have a quality start.  I would just be happy with a start over 5 innings.

Hopefully we can get to .500 with a win, and be 4-6 games over by the All-Star Break.

Marquis...
is a first-half pitcher.  That's why he got left off the Cards roster in the playoffs.  It's just that now, he's a first 1/4 pitcher.

I don't harbor many hopes for today.

Mug 'Em
I don't think this is a 'must-win' game that will make or break the season, but it will be very satisfying, after yesterday, to give the Brewers a taste of their own medicine.

After a 3 up 3 out first inning, Marquis continues to deny through 7.
Meanwhile, Cub bats are blasting the ball all over the field and score 9 in the first 3.

More boring than Friday's game perhaps, but I want a message, loud and clear, zero distortion,  delivered.

Go Cubs!

What ever happened to the snowed out game that was to be rescheduled for July 12?  I see there are still no tickets for sale if that is indeed going to happen.

Yeah it is over Hype.....

They don't Have to win today. Life gets much easier if they win. But they don't HAVE to.

They could lose today and rip off 6 before the all star break and be fine.

First, let's just hope Marquis keeps the ball down. Down Down Down.

Must win is emotional/psychological that said
It is emotional for the fans and psychological for the team. However winning is the collision of two teams playing the best ball in June, Brewers going 17-8 and Cubs 17-11. Ironically the Brewers are 14-6 over the last 20 games and the Cubs are 12-8, so even with the win streak the Cubs have lost two games to the Brewers over the last 20.

My thinking is that Marquis needs a solid game, working the ball on the hands and making them beat the ball into the ground.

With Marquis my guess we will see again the DeRosa-Fontenot infield and Pie in CF.

Marquis
Is due for another good start. If he's going to get a win, today would be a fine time to do it. Also, I noticed that we put Rocky Cherry on the 15-day DL...anyone know what happened there? Apparently we've brought Billy Petrick back up...
"High...pop fly...wouldn't be a home run in a phone booth!" -Harry Caray

by riggs on Jul 1, 2007 11:25 AM CDT reply actions

Needed a reliever...
Cherry was only brought up because Petrick was tired from 30 pitches the day before, and we needed a usuable arm.  However, by sending Petrick down, the only way to bring him back up is if someone is DLed.  So, they DLed Cherry, who wasn't going to be sticking around anyway.

Essentially, the move yesterday and the move today were made just to give Petrick a guaranteed day off without losing a reliever.

Another approach would have been to DL Jones and just bring up Cherry, but that would guarantee that Jones wouldn't be traded for 15 days.  So Hendry kept the door open on the trade by playing musical chairs with the bullpen.

Do Roster Moves Get Any More Transparent?
From Cubs.com:

7/1/07  Placed RHP Rocky Cherry on the 15-day disabled list with a right lat strain; Recalled RHP Billy Petrick from Triple-A Iowa.
--------------------------------------

A right lat strain? Please.......

I know games are played with rosters all the time, but at what point do clubs get penalized for this type of crap?

They won't
because they all do it and to a certain extent, the roster rules are silly.

Certainly not worse than the Angels naming Steve Green (whose major league career consisted of one six inning start in 2001) to their playoff roster in 2002 and then saying "Oops, he's been out with Tommy John surgery since April.  Guess we need an injury replacement.  How about this Francisco Rodriguez kid?"

Who is the starting SS today?
Now that Ramirez is back, should Theiot remain the regular SS or is Lou going to platoon him with Derosa?  I don't want to see this turn into another outfield oversupply situation.  Just pick one or the other and stick with with him.

by ronsanto10 on Jul 1, 2007 11:42 AM CDT reply actions

might see
theriot at short today and fontenot on the bench, as righties are hitting bush at a .319 clip with 7 HR versus a .257 clip with 2 HR for lefties. if lou goes with the matchups, it'll probably be derosa at second with theriot at SS. also, fontenot's had a couple of rough days defensively, so lou might want to sit him and give him a chance to calm down a bit.

Now the
Petrick/Cherry move from yesterday makes a lot more sense. I like the fact that Hendry is keeping the door open for a trade. Hopefully there are still takers out there.
As said before Marquis just has to keep the ball down. I think he should benefit from following the two lefties. He should be able to work a couple of quick innings, whick is what the doctor ordered.

i like that
hendry is keeping the trade possibility open as well, but if he's going to trade jones, lou might have to play him, although watching him play might actually lower his trade value...if the cubs need to showcase jones to move him, who loses AB's: pie, pagan, or floyd?

but the cubs are going to pick up part of jones' salary, league/owner shenanigans of last week aside, so that aspect of the trade could be mitigated. it's not as if DFA'ing jones saves the cubs any money, in fact, it might cost more. so you can trade him and pick up his salary, or DFA him and pick up his salary while getting nothing for him.

If the Cubs somehow find takers for JJ, Cesar and Eyre, we'll probably have to eat a good portion of their salaries.

I hear what you're saying but
you can't dismiss the fact that Zell isn't going to allow the team to eat future salary in trades. That effectively negates the possibility of moving him. Same goes for Eyre and, to a lesser extent, Izturis.

If we can't trade them or DFA them, they're here for the season. Zell boxed Hendry in and now we have 3 players we don't want wasting space on the bench. Championship teams aren't built that way.

i wondered about that
myself. i think it's due to the fact that bush is getting pounded by righties this year (.319 BAA vs. RH), so lou wanted to load up the top of the lineup with righties to try and jump on bush early. that's the only rhyme or reason i can see to moving fontenot down, because, as you've noted, he's hitting the cover off the ball in the two hole. also, the bottom of the cubs lineup has become auto-out city. if fonty can hit down there, it might pay off in the late innings...

agree
we have been playing our best baseball and our lineup seems to be scoring most runs with fontenot sandwiched between soriano and lee at the 2 spot. why mess with that? i dont care how bad bush is against lefties. dont try and fix it if its not broken to begin with.

A win today would be great....
but even with a loss, a 5-1 road trip against two very bad teams would put the Cubs at 44-42 at the break.  If they can focus on being two or three games above .500 and 7 games or less out of first place at the break, they have a fighting chance in the second half.  And after the way the team was playing at the beginning of June, I am amazed that I am saying that.

Fielder
is fat. His jiggling is hypnotic, especially when they show his swings in slow motion. Plus it is nice to see a man with a good relationship with his father. So rare these days.

I was at Friday's game...
...in a section with a bunch of Brewers fans. And after the Cliff Floyd infield sacrifice, they were bitching about how the Brewers didn't even try to make a play at home (because the risk of throwing the ball away didn't eclipse the chance of nailing Lee, who was pretty much home when Fielder got Floyd). One of them said, "If I was him I would have run down to the runner instead of just waiting for him to come to me!"

I turned and said, "And you expect Prince Fielder to run how?"

This bought a moment of silence, a bunch of laughs all around and the classic response: "Well I would have waddled towards home, at least!"

I must say
The Marquis has been effective today at getting himself out of jams. Truth is, Pagan should have had that fly ball (he is a major league baseball player and should be held to high standards), but The M de J has gotten himself out of trouble. Considering he needs to throw a complete game today, I hope his arm (and face) are feeling ok after 5.

The wind.....
....has held back homers for Fielder, Lee and Soriano. Just as well since Marquis keeps flirting with trouble the last couple of innings.

lay a copy of the lyrics on the desk in front of them anyway. that whole things has become a farce anyway. either pick a permanent singer, play a tape of harry, or cut it out altogether.

Luckily that inning didn't get out of hand. He better sharpen up a bit if he wants to last more than 6+ IP.
