Open Thread: Cubs vs. Astros, Sunday 7/15, 1:20 CT

Two weeks ago, the Cubs set an all-time attendance record for a three-game series: 124,810 paid to see the set with Milwaukee.

With crowds of 41,448 yesterday and 41,593 on Friday, if today's attendance is 41,770 or more, which is a distinct possibility given the good play of the team and this spectacular weather forecast:

Today: Mostly sunny, with a high near 82. North wind around 5 mph becoming calm.
... that record would fall today.

Cliff Floyd strained his shoulder yesterday and Lou Piniella said it "didn't look good" after the game. Giving Floyd a day off wouldn't be a bad idea, especially with the lefthanded Wandy Rodriguez going. I wouldn't be surprised to see Mark DeRosa in RF today, particularly since he is hitting .411 (23-for-56) since June 25, best in the NL since that date.

 Today's Starting Pitchers
Jason Marquis
 J. Marquis
Cubs
vs. Wandy Rodriguez
 W. Rodriguez
Astros
6-5 W-L 6-7
3.67 ERA 3.87
62 SO 90
41 BB 26
12 HR 12
vs. Hou -- vs. Cubs
The last start for both these pitchers was nine days ago. Jason Marquis hasn't thrown that well in the last couple of months, and the July 6 outing vs. the Pirates was one of his worst of the year. However, at home he is 4-2, 3.20, allowing only 3 HR, whereas on the road he's 2-3, 4.21, 9 HR allowed, in the same number of starts (nine) home and away. Keep him away from Lance Berkman (.586/.692/.897, 17-for-29, four doubles, a triple and a HR), and Morgan Ensberg (.457/.486/.743, 16-for-35, 3 HR).

On the other hand, Marquis himself is 3-for-4 in his career vs. Rodriguez, and hit one of his two HR prior to this year off him on June 4, 2005, the year he hit .310/.326/.460 with 8 doubles, a HR and 10 RBI in 87 AB. Derrek Lee is 4-for-7 with 2 doubles and a HR off Rodriguez, and it's time the Cubs' RH power turned itself on, wouldn't you say?

Today's game is on WGN, on EI, and at the Mediacenter.

Cubs No.'s vs. Wandy
now, this is a very limited sample, as no one on the roster has faced wandy more than 9 times, so have your grain of salt handy. The Good: K. Hill .500/.500/.500 in 2 AB's Lee .571/.667/1.286 in 7 AB's (that SLG % is not a typo, BTW) Jones .333/.333/.333 in 3 AB's The Bad: Ramirez .111/.111/.111 in 9 AB's The Ugly: Soriano .000/.333/.000 in 4 AB's Ward .000/.000/.000 in 3 AB's DeRosa .000/.000/.000 in 3 AB's Oddly enough, the Cub with the second-best career line and the most career AB's against Wandy is not even with the big club: Matt "The Big Murt" Murton, who sports a line of .364/417/.909 in 11 AB's versus Wandy.

How about I post that where it's actually legible.
The Good:

K. Hill .500/.500/.500 in 2 AB's Lee .571/.667/1.286 in 7 AB's (that SLG % is not a typo, BTW)
Jones .333/.333/.333 in 3 AB's

The Bad:

Ramirez .111/.111/.111 in 9 AB's

The Ugly:

Soriano .000/.333/.000 in 4 AB's Ward .000/.000/.000 in 3 AB's DeRosa .000/.000/.000 in 3 AB's

Oddly enough, the Cub with the second-best career line and the most career AB's against Wandy is not even with the big club: Matt "The Big Murt" Murton, who sports a line of .364/417/.909 in 11 AB's versus Wandy.

I had this crazy dream sequence out of nowhere
last night:

Murton got called up, and entered a game somehow in LF. The first pitch was hit right to him... one-hopper right in front of him... and he muffed it, and it rolled all the way to the wall. He dropped his glove and ran off the field in tears.

All Time Cubs Wins
I'm sort of a media geek, so I read about the people who cover a lot of our favorite sports and found this little tidbit at the "Awful Announcing" blog:
http://awfulannouncing.blogspot.com/2007/07/cubbies-are-headed-toward-impressive.html

The biggest story in baseball over the last couple of weeks has been the Philadelphia Phillies and their inexorable march toward the major league record 10,000th loss in team history. The Charlie Manuel Nine has been sitting on 9,999 since losing to the Rockies last Saturday; the next day was the famous tarp-blowing incident, then the All-Star break. All told, they've won their last three games.

What I found interesting wasn't that the next closest team to 10,000 losses is the Atlanta Braves (they're still more than 300 away - not that exciting yet), but that San Francisco holds the all-time record for franchise wins with 10,151 since 1883. Next in line? The Chicago Cubs, who are sitting on 9,945 right now and will likely reach 10,000 next season (to do it this year, they would have to win exactly 100 games, which means playing at a 55-19 clip the rest of the way).

Aside from enjoying the fact that the Phillies are avoiding their 10,000th all-time loss at the expense of the Dead Birds (I am certainly enjoying having the upper hand this year, given that I live about 2 hours from St. Louis), I liked the little Cubs tidbit.  A 55-19 clip this year would be AMAZING, but the question is - can it be done?

If someone asked you
After the Rumble in the Clubhouse and Lou's tirade if the team would win 25 games over the next 6 weeks, including sweeping the White Sox, Colorado, and an impressive 2 out of 3 against Milwaukee and be under 4 games away from first place, what would you say then?

Anything is possible, my friend.  Anything can be done.  And remember - if the Cubs make the playoffs, that 100 wins can be achieved over more than 162 games...

25 wins...
That day, I wouldn't have bet $5 on the Cubs winning 25 games THE REST OF THE SEASON, to say nothing of this short period of time - it's been a fun ride I'm looking forward to watching continue through October!

'Stro's No.'s vs. L'Marquis du Addison St.
obviously a team as old as the astros has seen Marquis a lot. some these numbers aren't pretty.

The Good:

Berkman .586/.692/.897 in 29 AB's

Bruntlett .500/.500/.500 in 2 AB's

Ensburg .457/.486/.743 in 35 AB's

Lee, Carlos-type .353/.476/.706 in 17 AB's

The Bad:

Ausmus .200/.286/.240 in 25 AB's

Biggio .256/.304/.395 in 43 AB's

Burke .217/.333/.304 in 23 AB's

Loretta .222/.222/.222 in 9 AB's

The Ugly:

Lamb .063/.167/.250 in 16 AB's

Munson .000/.000/.000 in 3 AB's

Scott .154/214/.462 in 13 AB's

So, at least only the heart of the order owns Marquis. he better keep the ball down today.

There is no way, Lou ...
would mess with Soriano at the lead-off spot right now. Didn't Soriano struggle quite a bit the last time Lou did this?

Soriano was a #5 hitter
in Texas and the primary reason he lead off his 2 final years in NY had more to do with their lineup than anything else.

It seems that everyone but Soriano feels his skills best match a middle of the lineup guy. I have a feeling that Lou knows this too and will eventually get Sori where he belongs.

Josh Kroeger. Remember the name. Stay tuned for the fame.

Wants more balance, little deeper in the mid part of the lineup.  Theriot has the speed needed.

This is for left-handers only, Fonz apparently ok with it.

i caught it...
he said they're trying it out against this lefty cause the middle of the lineup's been a little weak against them i guess. he said that he talked to soriano, and he was fine with it. he also said they've been thinking about it for a little while but wanted to try it on the road. then, he said it's just an experiment; if it works, they might stick with it.

C'mon Marquis
looks good at times wonder why a sinkerball pitcher gets hit this hard so often>?

nice comeback today either way...eyre is loosening oh no!!

Lee will go on HR tear now I predict just in time for long homestand run!!

Hou is awful; Lowery pitching today for SF good he's about their best along with that tall righty...hope we face zito!!

by writerinwrigley on Jul 15, 2007 2:43 PM CDT reply actions

because..
a sinker ball pitcher has to keep his pitches down in the zone to have his sinker working. Marquis was putting in the pitches right in the middle of the plate which is a big no-no.

by cubsnlinux on Jul 15, 2007 2:46 PM CDT up reply actions

there's a school
of thought that says sinkerballers throw better when they're a bit tired, because they tend not to overthrow the sinker and it has a better action on it. coming off the ASB, maybe marquis is getting a little too much behind the sinker and it's getting up in the zone. however, his slider, not the sinker, is what's gotten him in trouble today.

Ramirez tattooed the ball.  It just happened to find the pitcher's glove.

Lou is saying that this is important...
we need this out to keep the lead.  Marmol can stay in this way.

Fontenot came out because he's the logical double-switch candidate.  This way, Lou can wait as long as possible without worrying about pinch hitting.

by SouthernCub on Jul 15, 2007 3:03 PM CDT up reply actions

No problem...
the caveat is that this is only my interpretation. :)

by SouthernCub on Jul 15, 2007 3:05 PM CDT up reply actions

I like the move...
we need to keep the lead, and Marmol is our best option to get one out.  We can pitch him 1.1 innings this way.  Meanwhile, Fontenot is the furthest away from batting among players you could remove, so he's the reason for the double-switch.

by SouthernCub on Jul 15, 2007 3:02 PM CDT up reply actions

Fontenot was having some bad swings..and wasn't looking comfortable

It's really become a lot of fun to watch this team now. Early in the season I was always expecting the worst, even with a lead. Down 5-0 today, I still thought we could win it. Great job Cubbies. Hey, has anyone seen Mr. Durden lately?

MrDurden
might have been banned... In any event, go to that blog where all the negative Cub fans are... They don't have many posts right now and the best they can come up with is that is that the Cubs mediocre talent is winning in the worst division in baseball and the Cards sucking this year is helping them too. Makes you wonder if they will switch to Royal fans or Devil Ray fans to get their losing fix?

by LT on Jul 15, 2007 6:00 PM CDT up reply actions

Be Careful
I am new to this site, as a matter of fact I am new to any site. I have been a  Cub fan since 1964 and have been there for the 1969 collapse, the loss to the Padres in 84, the loss to the Giants in 89, and the most heartbreaking loss of all in 2003.
My motto is not to get too excited. I have been down this road too often to get my hopes up.
However, this is fun so far isn't it!

by Ken Hubbs on Jul 15, 2007 6:34 PM CDT reply actions

Spoken like a true Cub Fan
If you can't get too excited then don't root.  The way I look at it is that you can only get as much enjoyment out of sports as you are willing to get crushed.  Therefore, to maximize your enjoyment of the Cubs, you must be ready to have your heart torn out of your chest over and over again if you really want to enjoy it when you win.

Look at it this way, if you want to hit 100 on the happy scale you must be ready to go to -100.  If you are guarded and only are willing to invest 1/2 your heart or a quarter, then the most you will get is 25 or 50.

I, myself, push all my chips in the middle of the table.  Sometimes you are way behind prefop (2006), sometimes you catch a good flop but lose (2005) and some times you get a favorable turn (2004) and sometimes you get rivered so bad you never want to play poker ever again (2003).

Go all in.

To LT
I've been a Cubs fan for years, but I'm new to the blogs this year...is the "blog where the negative fans are" the 1060etc....? I love BCB and have been reading 1060, but I've gotten really sick of their cry-baby mentality...if they lose, they're horrible...if they win, the other team was horrible. I don't know, but I'm wondering if I'm the only one that feels this way.
