You Are A Winner!, and Open Thread: Cubs vs. Giants, Wednesday 7/18, 1:20 CT

No, not the Cubs, who suffered a frustrating 4-2 loss to the Giants last night, in so doing going back to their April and May ways of walking far too many hitters (seven in all) and having that come back to bite them (though, give credit to Barry Zito, who threw one of his best games of the year).

Last night's winner was me. I won one of the 100 Washburn guitars given away via the scratch-off cards we got as we entered the ballpark. These are apparently worth quite a bit of money. I guessed this about three seconds after I walked away from the winner's claim table when someone offered me $150 for it. Or, more correctly, offered me $150 for the winners' letter I was handed. They didn't want the guitars sitting in the stands all game, so I had to walk back through the concourse, fighting against the thousands of people walking out, after the game, to pick it up. It's in a fairly large cardboard box, so maybe this wasn't a bad idea.

I don't play the guitar, so this item, the first thing I've won on a scratch-off (the last one was a Dusty Baker autographed ball, of all things) in three years, may wind up listed next to the one linked above on eBay.

About the rest of last night's game, witnessed by the largest night game crowd of the year so far, 41,102, what can you say? Sometimes you just get beat. Even after giving the Giants the lead after one of those darned leadoff walks in the fourth, Sean Marshall threw well enough to keep the game close and allow Derrek Lee to tie it up with an opposite-field HR in the sixth (there was absolutely no wind last night. The flags hung limp from the flagpoles the entire evening).

But Marshall was lifted for Carlos Marmol in the 7th, and Marmol didn't have it, and that was pretty clear from the beginning of his appearance. After a single and a walk leading off the 8th, Will Ohman was summoned to face ... Barry Bonds, who was making his first appearance of the series, pinch-hitting for Kevin Frandsen (we were amused, last night, by a few people in left field at first chanting "Baaa-reee" at Frandsen, then realizing Bonds wasn't playing, chanting "Barry's Backup! Barry's Backup!" at him), to some of the loudest boos I've heard at Wrigley Field in quite some time. The booing didn't stop thousands of people setting off flashes on their cameras as he batted, though -- the sort of thing we used to see when Sammy Sosa batted.

Ohman got Bonds to line to left field -- the hardest-hit ball of the 8th inning, in which there were three walks (one forcing in a run), two strikeouts, and a ball hit about sixty feet down the first base line, that Michael Wuertz (who had relieved Ohman) inexplicably picked up and then ate. It may or may not have gone foul, but if you don't think you have a play, let it roll!

The other key play in the Giants' winning inning was a foul popup by Bengie Molina that Jason Kendall (who had received a standing ovation when he first came to bat) apparently thought was in the seats; when Kendall, too late, figured out it was playable, he dived after it, but couldn't catch it. Naturally, Molina singled a couple of pitches later. I also thought plate umpire Jim Reynolds (the guy who threw his gum at Michael Barrett in Los Angeles a couple of weeks ago) was squeezing both Ohman and Wuertz in that 8th inning.

Kendall also got some jeers from the crowd when he wasn't able to handle a throw to the plate from Alfonso Soriano in the 4th, allowing a run to score. That one wasn't Kendall's fault -- even if he had handled it, I think the run would have scored anyway.

Incidentally, the more I see Billy Petrick, the more I like him. He throws hard, throws strikes (7 of 10 pitches last night), doesn't waste time, and last night at least kept the team in the game in his efficiently-thrown 9th inning.

The bottom line on this game is that the Cubs had a chance to put Zito away in the first inning and failed to do so, scoring only one run on a leadoff Ryan Theriot double and a subsequent error on a sacrifice attempt by Mike Fontenot. A run had scored with no one out and Fontenot was in scoring position on the error, with Lee, Aramis Ramirez and Alfonso Soriano due up... but no further scoring happened. Zito, who has struggled this year, slammed the door. Apart from Lee's HR he allowed only two harmless singles the rest of the way, through seven, and the Giants' bullpen, which has been horrid, also gave the Cubs nothing. Ramirez doubled leading off the 9th off Brad Hennessey (an unlikely closer, in my opinion, but he's been effective after taking over from the traded Armando Benitez), but that was it. Sometimes... you just get beat. And that's what happened last night. Throwing strikes, however, would have helped.

The good news is this: despite the Brewers gaining a game (to 4.5 ahead) with their win over Arizona, the D-backs' loss, plus the Braves' loss to the Reds, and the Padres' loss to the Mets, moved the Cubs into the third spot in the wild-card race, three games behind the leading Padres.

Finally, the local 7-11's were out of the Official Simpsons Movie Donuts last night, so Jeff was unable to eat them, as he had every day since the homestand began. He'll try again today, as will the Cubs.

Z has pitched two different seasons: 5-5, 5.62 in his first 12 starts, 6-2, 1.55 in his last eight. Against Bonds, who may or may not play today, he has held him hitless (0-for-4) with three walks and a strikeout. Perhaps the most memorable Bonds/Z confrontation was the first one, on July 31, 2003, when he got Bonds to pop up to end the fifth inning with the bases loaded and the Cubs leading 5-0. Z, according to the link above:
... pounded himself in the chest and pumped his fists twice as he walked off the field before tossing the ball about 12 rows into the stands behind the Cubs dugout.
Mr. Bonds didn't like that:
"I don't get upset about things like that, brother. He will learn respect eventually. I promise you," Bonds said. "He'll learn respect, I guarantee that."
Perhaps we'll see today.

Matt Cain, not yet 23 years old, has already made 57 major league starts. This year, he has pitched in particular hard luck: the Giants have scored a total of 60 runs in his 18 starts, but that's skewed by a 15-2 win at Colorado on May 13; in his other 17 starts the Giants have scored only 45 runs, 2.65 per start, and have been shut out three times.

MSM Error Dept.: The Yahoo preview of today's game says:

Cain got hit hard in his only career start against the Cubs, surrendering eight runs in 5 1-3 innings of an 8-1 loss on May 10, 2006.
Wrong. Yes, last year's awful Cub team did indeed do that to Cain. But it wasn't his only career start against the Cubs. He threw a two-hit CG against the Cubs in his third major league start on September 9, 2005.

You'll find today's game on WGN -- and as of this writing, it appears the rain will hold off till tonight -- and also at the Mediacenter.

Frustrating
Watching at home last night provided a little insight. Had Soriano's throw provided a little more room on the hop (or made it on the fly), the runner would have been out by several feet. Wasn't even close. Throw was on-line, it just short-hopped Kendall.

Can't figure out what Kendall was thinking of on that pop-up. He'll settle in over a few games.  Actually I was hoping Hill caught just so Kendall could relax. Apparently he was jacked about the trade.

On the "swinging bunt" in the 8th, it was clear it wasn't going to go foul. Weurtz simply has to be quicker off the mound. There was another play earlier that Marshall (being a southpaw his momentum takes him to the 3rd base side) could have tried to make a quicker move to his right; a ball that wasn't hit very hard.

Sometimes they just get beat, hey I look at it this way. It's 4 of 5 on the homestand thus far.  Play .800 ball for a good stretch and good things will continue to happen.

No Jimbo, go out and get Gagne and/or Loften.

I've seen Gagne close
twice in the last couple of weeks, most recently on Monday night. I wonder if his stats are decieving. (And, let's face it -- 2 games are a small sample) There is no way he is as dominating as he once was. My unofficial pitch out -- well over 40 pitches to close out the A's. 1 hit, 1 walk.

Maybe he's pitching on 'smarts' now, not domination. Perhaps somebody who watches the Rangers much more often than I can either confirm or dispute this. I'm NOT saying I'm right, so if somebody can produce some other anecdotal evidence, and not his #'s -- which are OK, I'd feel better about acquiring him. However, if this makes Eyre vanish, it's a positive no matter how you slice it.

Cubs pitchers vs Bonds
we've had quite a few guys these past years year who haven't been afraid of Bonds in the least. Of course Zambrano is Zambrano and he is just absolutely crazy.

Congrats on the guitar, Al!
Are you sure you don't want to hold on to it, though? It's such a beautiful piece of work with the ivy and all.

As far as last night's game goes:

Effective Zito + rough 8th inning (Kendall's error plus bullpen implosion) = loss

I still think Marshall -- and Petrick (yes! don't forget about him) -- pitched very well. And, hey, DLee got another home run. Let the power surge continue.

The guitar...

But the eBay bidding is over $500 already. That's tough to pass up.

Geez
that's fantastic. I bet it gets above $1k. That should pay for about 40 or 50 Cubs games (hot dogs, included)

As soon as I read your post
I thought, "I need to see how much Al wants for that guitar."  Then I read where you sold it on ebay.  So I went there, and there was another "Buy It Now" for $599.

I bought it.

Thanks for the reminder.

I don't play, but one of my boys is starting.  And I think it's a good investment anyway.  It will go well with our autographed Soriano photo from earlier this year (although that was free, because we actually won!)

the Wuertz ball
was definitely staying fair.  The replays on TV showed there was absolutely no way it was going foul.  He made the right play at the time.  I say at the time because he should have been able to get to it quicker and tag the runner for the out.

I saw the replay too.
You're right, it wouldn't have gone foul. But by picking it up and throwing, he risked throwing it away and having yet another run score.

Mobility is imperative
He gets off the mound quicker and there's no need for a throw, he gets it and makes the tag.

I hear the Giants radio call on ESPN and he mentioned that the throw would have hit the batter.  If that were the case, he could be called out for running in fair territory, but that was iffy at best.

The 8th inning........
..........was a microcosm of Will Ohman's season.

One minute he's retiring the toughest hitter in the game and the next he's ball-fouring some stiff.

Still don't like the guy in tough situations, and let's face it:  That ball hit by Bonds was tattooed.  Fortunately Soriano was in the right spot.

Someone must have clued in the Giants to the situation and they bought out all the donuts locally.

I also had one of those donuts Saturday morning before the game (before I left the burbs).  I will try to continue the tradition myself.

Actually there are four 7-elevens in walking distance of Wrigley.  I'll be sure to look for some at the next game.

Sorry guys
I'll take the blame for the loss.  I bought a new Cubs hat (my first, I never wear hats) this past friday, and well, the Cubs have won since (and I have been wearing it during every game).  I live in Southwest MN so I couldn't get the game on TV, but I was listening online to Santo.  Anywho, I didn't get much sleep the night before so I passed out really early last night (in like the 4th) falling asleep to the radio.  When I woke up around midnight I saw the Cubs lost and my hat was off my head.

Sorry :(

Umm,  Soriano's throw beat him by 15 feet.  It wasn't even close.  Soriano unloaded right as the guy was rounding third.

I don't want to dog on the guy, but if Kendall makes that play and catches the foul popup, the Giants score zero runs.  I hope he shakes it off, but he looked like a mini-Barrett last night.

I'm rewatching the play
on MLB.TV, and the throw was a bit tougher to corral that I remembered it last night, but if he'd come up with it I have no doubt he would've gotten the runner. The runner was feet away when that ball got to him, and the runner passed him after the ball had scooted away. He couldn've gotten the tag done.

either way, not mentally sharp last night
Of all things over the last 21 games or 39 or so since the Lou suspension, the Cubs have played excellent mental team baseball.

The walks last night were killers but Kendall lapsed on the pop up, misjudged and then had to try to make a fantastic play. When he started I was unhappy in that I figured he might be tired from the emotions and 6 hour late night plane ride. Because of the day game Lou will probably platoon him and sit him today.

Zito pitched lights out. Maybe he can do the same against Milwaukee. Cubs can finish the series with two wins with their best pitchers Z & Lilly today and tomorrow.

As for the young lefties, 2 quality starts....14 innings---4 earned runs 2.85 ERA.  They did well.
As for the demand for Gagne---why? Unless one see's the Cubs trading one of their 5 starters and inserting Dempster he will be back in a week or so and then there is Wood having to push out the performing Petrick.

We'll have to agree to disagree

I saw the replay several times and he's dead-to-rights out if Kendall comes up with it.  The announcers(and myself) were shocked that they even sent the guy.

Anyways, it's a done deal now.  He's getting the day off today(according to Lou) and hopefully he'll be more settled in on Thursday.

Cut the guy some slack -
it was game one in his new park, emotionally charged game (huge crowd, potential [and eventual] appearance by Bonds), new pitching staff and some really poorly pitched balls. Yes, he should have handled that ball from LF, but no one's perfect. I'm not sure what the area behind the plate looks like in Oakland, but that he didn't even think of pursuaing that pop-up suggests to me that the backstop is closer in Oakland and he mistakenly thought it's be in the crowd.

No doubt.
The Cubs' staff kept everything low last night; a ton of balls in the dirt. When they did venture high and/or outside, they were REALLY high AND outside! Our pitchers (save Marshall) looked like crap. Marmol has been awesome all year, so you could say he was due for a sub-standard outing.

Marmol
threw about a 90 mph fastball on that pitchout and ended up pushing it up and over his head...pretty pathetic.

The backstop is huge in Oakland...
so that's no excuse. Anyway, a MLB catcher is supposed to look up before he gives up on a foul fly.

As to the play at the plate, it was a short hop but, again, a good catcher is supposed to hold on to the ball. (Sorry, Al, the runner would've been out by a mile. Watch the replay.)

In short, Kendall looked tired after flying to Wrigley and probably getting little rest. I read he's resting today. Well, Lou should've rested Kendall yesterday.

Regardless, the Cubs didn't lose solely because of Kendall. They got back to the lack of offensive production from Soriano out of the # 1 spot in the batting order. Also, the bullpen -actually, Mármol and Ohman- reverted to the bad version from the first part of the season. Hopefully, this was an aberration and will not become the norm.

Not only left him in, but let him bat.  Given the at bat was not in a crucial situation, but an out is an out and Marmol is not a hitter.

I agree with almost everything Lou does, except for ocassionally leaving a reliever in when he obviously doesn't have it that night.  Marmol barely got out of the 7th and should of been done after that.

Someone explain why it's "imperative"...
to have a "veteran" catcher to make a playoff run.  Without looking it up, I would contend that history does not bear this out.  How about just finding someone who can catch and isn't an automatic out in the lineup?

Yes, I'm ticked about Soto never being given his shot, and that goes for the short leash on Pie as well.

by Jerry Mumphrey on Jul 18, 2007 9:27 AM CDT reply actions

Ticked about Soto?
Soto's a nice player, a decent prospect, but no savior. I'd MUCH rather have an experienced major league catcher. Virtually every recent World Series winner has had one.

Pie had no "short leash". He played every day till he stopped hitting.

Whether or not we kept Pie is irrelevant -
there's the same offensive hole in CF with or without him.

I hope they swap out Hill and Soto in order to get him (Soto) more major league ABs on Sundays or whatever.

"Alou backwards is Uola!"

by lostinthevines on Jul 18, 2007 9:35 AM CDT up reply actions

What's the point of that?
Kendall's going to catch every day, or nearly so. Why have Soto on the bench to play once every two weeks? He doesn't have enough ML experience to hit when he's playing that infrequently. Hill doesn't have that much experience either, but he does have enough to be able to do that, plus he hits lefthanded.

I swear, reading these posts you'd think Soto is the second coming of Ivan Rodriguez. He's not. His upside is probably Henry Blanco.

by cubsbak on Jul 18, 2007 11:04 AM CDT up reply actions

Maybe
or maybe AAA stats don't always translate to the big leagues.  Sometimes a guy maxes out at AAA and can't make the adjustment to the big leagues.  Ryan Braun is a top-shelf prospect who will probably be the rookie of the year.  Soto is a mediocre prospect who's had a nice three months in AAA.

Kendall sucked last night...
but give the guy a break.  By his own admission, he was really excited to be a Cub and I'm sure he wanted to make a great impression, so he was probably putting a lot of pressure on himself to do well.  But sometimes things can snowball on you, and I think that's what happened last night.  I reserve my judgment about Jason Kendall after more than 9 innings as a Cub.

And I give him a little more credit on the mishap on the popup.  Watching the replay, I don't think he misjudged it, I think he lost it in the lights.  Still a missed opportunity, but a little more foregivable...

I too was upset but I think it just goes to show that a 12-year veteran can have butterflies for a regular season game.

Gotta love Fonz's throw to the plate. Dead-on straight; too bad it was a short hop.

Kendall will be fine, he'll settle in and help out a lot. Gotta wonder how the lineup will be shaking out after he's settled in.

On the play at the plate
I was in Dugout Boxes for the first time. About as close to fieid as one can get other than being on it.

I will disagree with Al's assertion, and can say, unless the ball gets knocked out of his glove by the runner, the throw had him beat by five feet or more.

With all due respect, without the benefit of in-the-park replays, Al sits 400ft from any action at home.

Grudgingly, I have to accept that it was their ace against our "worst" pitcher (although, he's outpitched Marquis recently) and Zito was very good. I have hated Ohman for two years - yesterday was one of the reasons why. He has control problems...Walk-a-matic! Nice job on BBonds, but to walk two guys in a row - a .222 hitter and a .239 hitter just sucks!

It is tough to beat Zito with two runs or less. Today we have OUR ace going - let's see how it turns out. I'm gonna give Kendall a one-game break, but two f-ups in one game leading to runs we were able to get out of Barrett.

Al - CONGRATS on THE WASHBURN!!! Have you won anything else before there? Jersey's? Balls?

It was intense
Though I've been to many regular season games, I have never had the opportunity to go to a playoff game at Wrigley. As I stood there in Sec 8 Aisle 2 along with everyone else in the park in that eigth inning, I couldnt help but think that it must feel something like that. The DLee homerun to tie it, then retiring Bonds after all the jeering you just had that feeling that we were going to come out on top again. I was already looking forward to the celebrating part. But like Al said, everyone around me pretty much agreed we just got beat and it wasn't gonna happen last night.

My wife, like Al, is starting to love Petrick but for different reasons. This year her Cub crush is him after getting an up close look at him in the bullpen. I was hoping this would at least translate into a ball for me but eventhough he looked and smiled, he wasn't in the giving mood. I know, pretty low of me to think anyway.

Kendall: I'm hoping he just had opening night jitters or something. And on the throw to the plate, I also think he could have made the tag had he scooped the ball cleanly. Again, something tells me he probably wasnt expecting such a quick and precise throw. Even Soriano seemed a little disappointed with the result. He stood there for a few seconds w/his hands on his waist and his head down. Everyone cheered Soriano for the throw anyway.

Nah.  90 wins last year, 99 wins AND a World Championship the year before.  Kenny's got a long leash IMO.

Kenny's arrogant (I've stated here previously in a less kind fashion) no doubt about it.  Clearly his plans for this season flopped, not entirely his fault but does fall on him.  The bullpen is beyond bad.

"...or did resigning Burhle buy him some good karma from the Sox fanbase?"

Regarding MB I was for looking at the situation without sentiment, whatever helped the Sox whether it be sign him or trade him.  I just hope they made the decision based on sound baseball reasons  not emotion, sentimentality or pressure from the fans and media. (The media and some Cubbie fans were going to criticize the Sox regardless, and that's just what they did.)

Ranting and Raving
First, Al congrats on the geetar...it's a beautiful thing.  Anywho, I have a question and maybe you've discussed this in the past but what do you think of the fans who stand up constantly during the game anticipating that clutch hit or pitch.  Me and a few co-workers (who are much older and more knowledged Cubs fans) were discussing this and they seem to resent those fans who stand up in the "first inning just because there's a full count and 2 outs."  They say not only do they obstruct the view of those sitting down but that people should only stand up and cheer AFTER something exciting happens.  They're old school fans, and just plain old at that, so I want to give them the benefit of the doubt but on the other hand I'm part of that mass of Cubs fans  that stands up in anticipation of something exciting and feels that much more rewarded when it does happen. Then again sometimes I think I've caught myself standing up screaming if there's an 0-2 count on the leadoff hitter.  Comments?

respect
When the game has a certain feel of rally or there's simply a big situation coming up, standing is fine and dandy; when it in-mass. It's when there's a lesser amount of excitement that someone standing up front is annoying. Last night's game was an example.  There was a guy in the 1st row - visible from the CF camera - just above the signage that kept standing when it just wasn't warranted. Don't think he was on the preverbial cell phone call of "I'm a dumbass, look at me, I'm on TV". But it was annoying none the less. I missed many a plays at Wrigley and the old Stadium at 'Hawks games because of utter lack of respect.

Honestly, if I had a choice between lackluster fans that are disinterested and those who standup when its at least arguably warranted, I'll take the latter.

Cubs nation takes enough crap from Southsiders and others for supposedly coming to the "worlds largest beer garden" to drink and not pay attention to baseball.

For a team that has gone this long without rewarding its fan base with a championship, and often without even playing well, I count my blessings that fans still have the interest and spirit to stand up for a 1st inning 0-2 count.

I agree 100%
In addition, we happen to be in a race where every game from here on out is probably going to have the same play off atmosphere as last night. I doubt there were as many opportunities to stand and cheer at a game at this time last year. I'll probably get laughed at but I happen to enjoy soccer also. And for a sport with so little scoring, the atmosphere is very unique and entertaining in itself.

I'm more disturbed w/the guy that stands up to get his ID out, then starts asking his friend down the row if he wants another beer, then finally pays for the beers and takes a sip before sitting down.

As a Kansas City native, and someone who still considers himself to hold on to his Royals loyalty...ZG would be a disaster for the Cubs.

It is well documented about Hamilton's struggles with substance abuse, however ZG's issues are social anxiety. At one point when things were at their worse, he was prepared to walk away completely because he couldnt bring himself to play the game anymore.

And this comes, self-admittedly, from one of the most annoymous franchises in all of pro-sports. KC is a place that loves its Royals becuase its pro baseball and we have a rich history. The pressure to win simply isn't that high.

If you think for one second that his social anxiety disorder would translate well to Wrigley and the fan base, media, etc of Chicago...that's just a poor choice.

Wording
I realize "head case" is a tried and true baseball phrase, but perhaps we can be a little more enlightened these days.  In case anyone didn't know, Greinke is not the only athlete to experience social anxiety issues.  Medication is often helpful.  It can also be the case that the problem is not when you're on the field, because things are predictable there, but it's when you're working out, in the clubhouse, basically around people ALL THE TIME.  Some people get creeped out having other people watch them as they stretch, chat with friends, shag flies, etc.  It may be that Zack would have more problems in the pressure cooker that Wrigley is these days.  It may also be that playing for a winning team would be motivating, and would actually help him focus on the game while he's on the field.

I've had these issues, and I have no problem teaching a class, because I'm in control there.  It's having to meet new people at a party, or sitting in a large crowd, or having someone talk to me on the plane that is worse.  Of course, everyone's different.  Hopefully any team trading for Greinke would be careful to have the Royals ask him whether he feels he's ready for a playoff atmosphere.

Terriffic post
Hate to hear the discrimination against a young man who may have some issues. Guess what -- it's not related to drugs/steroids!

If ZG comes with a cheap price tag -- take him.
A doctor can monitor his medication.

Hard to believe this negative discussion in 2007. Ron Santo hid his diabetes in 1960 due to attitudes like this. Obviously, it would be easier to accept ZG as a reformed drug abuser -- we can quantify that (he's gone through rehab!) than one with some 'other' type of issues, because 'head cases' scare us -- because, there's no re-hab for that.

by San Diego Smooth Jazz Man on Jul 18, 2007 2:46 PM CDT up reply actions

No Negative Connotation
If anything I may have stated at the start of this sounded negative, that was my intention. As a Cubs fan and a realist, I am thinking with my head as opposed to my heart where the compassion for illness would lie.

For Zack to overcome his illness and be the Major Leaguer the Royals think he could have been when they drafted him, all the better.

Maybe I want him to succeed for my hometown team, maybe I want to spare him the absolutely ungodly pressure he will face here at Wrigley...but don't take this discussion as an indictment of someone with illness. This is purely a baseball-opinion. If ZG can succeed and overcome his disorder, he's in the right place to do it in Kansas City. He's not playing very well now and I just don't think coming here would do him any good or help his development.

Bottom line, he's still painfully young, I want to guess 23 right now...Wrigley just isn't the place for this young man.

Fontenot has...
...six starts this month against righties, five against lefties. (I count the game where he came in for Cliff Floyd as a start; otherwise go to five and five.) Of games where he's been completely shut out, four righty and three lefty starters.

And we already have three other guys on the team with extreme platoon splits. If Fontenot is our fourth lefty that can't hit lefties, then his utility is exceedingly decreased, seeing as his defense is merely adequate at second and he can't handle short (meaning he's not any sort of utility infielder).

That's completely inexcusable on a team with as many problems agaisnt lefties as we've had, and Fontenot has options. I think he needs to be sent down.

Definately Murton...
...to give us a right fielder. If you decide to end the Fontenot experiment you may well want another infielder to cover for DeRosa playing third base during this time. And since Ward is about useless against lefty pitching, you need someone to platoon with him on first, and that's probably DeRosa too. You could do worse than Cedeno. Or you could bring Soto back up (assuming Floyd is DL'd) and use him at first during the suspension. Scott Moore is having a good month, too, and plays first and third. So there's quite a few different options.

...as I can tell, but the rules on such matters are often complex. (The official MLB rules don't specify what positions exist, actually -- just infielders, outfielders, pitchers and catchers.)

I'll give you Murton.  Lets concentrate on 1st... it isn't going to be Soto if for no other reason than you can't bring him up again for 10 days since we just sent him down.  Moore would be an intriguing option.  Also, what about Dopirak?  Is he worth looking at?  I haven't seen his stats.

So if Lee, Ramirez, and Kendall aren't playing today I wonder what the over/under on runs scored should be?  A couple months ago I'd have said 1.5, but now I'll say 4.5!

If comes out wild,
he's prone to a big inning. However, if he's on, we may be in for a low-scoring game. Again, so long as the Cubs win, fine by me. This is where having a guy like Izturis who's worthless to this club, really handcuffs Lou. He's shortbenched and Hendry can be smarmy as he wants with radio show host, but he still hasn't given Lou a full complement of players. Unsat, my friends, totally unsat.

So maybe this is a goo thing. Plus, with both he and Rammy out of the lineup, perhaps Hendry will finally see what Lou's been on about for a couple weeks--he's short-benched and it's games like these where it hurts the club.

Because...
...he's hurt anyway so now he gets 5 games off and can start healthy on Monday. Serving it sooner rather than later is also smart because now you can decide when to take the suspension. Once the league hears the appeal the suspension is served immediately so IMO it's smart.

The real question is why we allow ourselves to be hamstrung by having players like Jones, Izturis and Eyre who are only brought in when things are desperate or already out of hand, and by letting us have so many players with massive platoon splits.

Internet is your friend
Not sure where you're going but if it is Europe, here's the deal. In capital cities, you'll be able to get the International Herald-Tribune (affiliated with NYT) and USA Today. On weekdays. But there will probably be a two or three day delay between the game and you seeing the score. In smaller cities, you might find these papers, but only in the downtown areas. In the countryside, forget about it.

If you are staying in hotels, they may have computers available for guests use. If you're staying in bed and breakfasts, maybe the owners will let you use their PC. Broadband is pretty pervasive now throughout the continent.

I think there is a difference...
between a pitcher trying to grab a comebacker with his pitching hand and an outfielder going into the wall to make a catch. Outfield walls are usually padded (there are exceptions) and there is a "warning track" to warn a fielder when he's getting close to the wall. Pitchers don't have any warning or chance to adjust/prepare themselves when they put the one body part they can't afford to injure in harms way.

Yes and no...
gameday's pitch placement isn't all that accurate. I'd say they're about 80% correct. Z isn't getting squeezed, and Cain's not getting the "Maddux Zone" if that's what your asking.

it really pisses me off too. i always look at the pitchers match-ups a week in advance and we switch opponents with the brewers and sometimes it works in our favor and sometimes it doesnt. the odds of brandon webb not starting against them in a 4 game series obviously arent good but it was a bad break for us. i dont have numbers in front of me but just based on memory it seems like webb has had really good success against us

What about that catcher?? He's been on fire ever since they made the Kendall deal; maybe he felt he was "barely spared'' and coulda been sent down or DFA when they had 3 catchers on ML roster.

Nice to get something from bot of lineup it's been the top 4-5 carrying us most of year.

Zonk
started his career as a catcher for the Phils and did do some catching for the Cubs very early in his time here.

If you ever watched footage of Mike Schmidt hitting the homer in 1980 that knocked the Expos out of race in the penultimate game of the year, you can see Moreland, in catching gear, greeting Schmidt and Pete Rose (who scored in front of Schmidt) with his teammates just outside the dugout. (Moreland went 0 for 4 that day).

"What a wild scene here in Montreal!"

I love that 1980 Phillies team. (the Cubs were awful that year, so I don't feel guilty enjoying their division rival)

Yea he is...
but from what Klines was saying - he said the Edmonds doesnt go out with guys from the team - he likes to sit at the end of the bar by himself.

I never saw him out so i cannot attest to this.

the Cubs will have a very reasonable shot (if not a better shot than the division) at the wild card.

This meme of "the wild card is coming out of the west or east" seems strange to me considering those teams will be beating each other up for the rest of the season. The cubs could easily sneak in there. Besides, are the phils, braves, or padres any better than the Cubs?

HEY GUYS - on KENDALL...
I am not Lou - nor do I "act like Lou at home" - but why wouldn't the manager wait until the team goes on the road in order to start the new catcher?

Much less pressure, and time to really learn the staff from the bench...

It appears as if the staff is comfortable with K. Hill, and he is starting to hit (finally).

HIGGY - and others - what do you think?

by TheEman on Jul 18, 2007 4:29 PM CDT reply actions

Often times...
they will do such a thing with pitchers, but postions players it really doesnt matter as much (not really the center of attention).

And i have not followed much of kendall this year but from what i read it seems as if he was not getting a large amount of playing time - and since we were playing the Giants (who have been cold of late) Lou probably figured lets get his feet wet right away and let the Wrigley crowd welcome him!

When was last Cubs save by pitching 3+ innings?
Does anyone know the last time any Cub pitcher got a save by pitching three or more effective innings to end the game? My guess would be at least 15 years ago.

That would be a difficult topic to research, even with Retrosheet. I can't imagine going through that many box scores. I certainly don't remember the last occasion off hand, though I do remember Bruce Sutter going three innings a bunch of times for saves and maybe 4 innings once or twice.

I'll do a bit of checking.

Answer
On Sept. 24, 2000, Felix Heredia pitched 3 scoreless and hitless innings for the save in a 10-5 win over the Cardinals. Todd Van Poppel went 6 innings for the win.

Also, on July 29, 2000 - Cubs beat Giants 8-1. Kyle Farnsworth throws three scoreless innings for the save in relief of winning pitcher Kerry Wood.

Earlier that year, on June 7, Todd Van Poppel posted a 3-inning save for the Cubs over the Diamondbacks in a 9-4 win. Van Poppel, in relief of Scott Downs, allowed 5 hits and one run.

Still searching for the last 4-inning Cub save.

I don't know how I missed that one. Can't remember Anderson at all.

But Bullinger in 1996 might have been the last Cub before that to have a 4-inning save.

Last 4-inning Cub save
Appears to have been Jim Bullinger, who on June 16, 1996 (the day I got married, by the way), threw the final four innings of an 8-4 win over San Diego in relief of Frank Castillo. Bullinger allowed 2 hits, one run and struck out 4. Terry Shumpert homered for the Cubs. Ryne Sandberg had 2 RBI.

The losing pitcher for the Padres that day was none other than Fernando Valenzuela. That makes it seem like a long time ago, indeed. Can't believe I've been married that long!

Sure
Bernsie asks him what happened to him today, and Hill says, "Aww, man i dunno. Some days, you hit, and some days you just suck."

Then he was talking about getting switched from third base to catcher in the Dodgers organization and he said at first, he was kinda bummed, "'cause at thrid, you could kinda lounge between pitches, you had time to checkout the stands and stuff. Behind the plate, you have to stay focused." To which Bernsie replies, "Checking the stands for what?" and Hill sarcastically cracks right back, "You know, to see how many people are there."

He kept it really loose the whole time, definitely a guy who doesn't take himself too seriously at all. It's gotta be good for the clubhouse to have him around.
