Around SBN: Explaining Jeremy Lin's Early, Surprising Success

Open Thread: Cubs vs. Diamondbacks, Saturday 7/21, 12:05 CT

Despite the early start to today's game, I expect thousands of people to be lined up at Wrigley Field well before the gates open this morning.

Why is this? Are people that excited about the team's great play over the last few weeks?

Well, maybe. But more likely, people will be arriving early because the first 10,000 fans will be given a Carlos Zambrano bobblehead. Carlos, for his part, will be watching the game from the dugout, as he's not scheduled to throw again till Tuesday night at St. Louis.

 Today's Starting Pitchers
Rich Hill
 R. Hill
Cubs
vs. Micah Owings
 M. Owings
D'backs
6-6 W-L 5-5
3.70 ERA 4.92
99 SO 56
34 BB 32
19 HR 11
vs. Ari -- vs. Cubs
Rich Hill turned his season around in his last start, an excellent 8 IP, 2 ER performance against the Giants on Monday. Of his success Monday, Hill said:
"What I did was get back to keeping things simple and getting back to a game plan of not trying to think too much and keeping the game plan simple."
Sounds simple enough to me.

He beat Arizona last August 1, but had two earlier starts (May 4, 2006 and July 30, 2005), which weren't as good, but that was the "old" Rich Hill. Against current Diamondbacks he's done pretty well; Eric Byrnes is 2-for-7 with a HR vs. Hill.

Micah Owings, one of the D'backs' hottest pitching prospects before the season began, is having a tough time. He hasn't won since June 20 and is 0-4, 7.84 since then. He is the third player in major league history named "Micah", after Micah Franklin, who played 17 games for the 1997 Cardinals, and Micah Bowie, a former Cub who's still pitching for the Nationals.

This will be Owings' first career start vs. the Cubs.

Since this game is early, not in the Fox-exclusive 2:55 time slot, it's nationally available on WGN, on 3TV in Phoenix, and at the Mediacenter.

Hmmm....
One could think that this might be a good sign regarding Z's contract issue...

I mean, when is the last time you saw a club do a bobble head of a guy that they weren't planning on having around?

cant wait for the game today
watched all three games of the three teams
sitting ahead of us for the postseason and all 3 lost. you have to think if we win today we could be within 1 of the loss column (or tied in the loss column with a win and dodger loss). but if we keep taking care of business things will work themselves out and we will find ourselves in the post season one way or the other. GO CUBS!

I'm going to say this ahead of time......
....the inevitable daily complaining about line ups drives me crazy. Given the last month or so, I'm more than inclined to give Piniella the benefit of the doubt and assume there's a method to his madness. If he bats Fontenot third or puts Jones in center and batting second, the old SOB must have a pretty good reason for it. I was inclined to give him the benefit if the doubt before this latest good stretch, but even though it's all just a part of kibbutzing about the game, some people who state the Cubs are already destined to lose before the game even starts because Koyie Hill is still wearing a uniform, much less batting sixth or seventh, need to can it once in a while.

Sorry, rant over.

by JohnM on Jul 21, 2007 10:08 AM CDT up reply actions

Yeah, You're Full of It
Full of the cold hard truth that is.

A word in defense of all the negativists though.  They're Cub fans who, like us all, are so accustomed to mediocrity and downright suckiness that they react before they smell the roses.  I think we all understand that to a point.  OTOH, it does get awfully old reading the same old whines, gripes, and moans particularly when the team is playing as well, if not better, than any other time in its long, sorrowful, history.

Until Lou's decisions cease to be spot-on, I, for one, will not complain.  Fact is, there are myriad reasons why he is the manager and the rest of us aren't.

And so it goes.

by Luigi on Jul 21, 2007 10:32 AM CDT up reply actions

I just had to get that off my chest.
I'm right next to you on this BC...

People tend to forget that Lou DOES know one thing or two....
I mean...after all...he IS the manager that's, excuse me, IN THE CLUBHOUSE with these players every single day...

And he DOES get paid MILLIONS to manage and coach these guys....

So anyone here who is actually on the Cubbies staff and paid monster dollars to be there, would have a legit bitch about daily lineups that would be respected by us, the little guys on BCB.

But anyone ELSE - IMHO - should as you say....can it.
It's unproductive to fill space predicting a Cubs loss solely based on a lineup.

And everything we've seen as of late proves that.

(sorry...I had to get that off MY chest...hehehe)

I'm with you BeerCub
It's not the constant lineup whining, it's all the in-game whining.  I bet if you go back to every game thread during the Cubs recent streak, you'll find numerous posts questioning what Lou is doing, questioning the lineup, stating I have bad feeling about this game or this pitcher, that homerun is on Lou, etc., etc.  The in-game threads are nearly unreadable once the game starts.

by rlpete on Jul 21, 2007 11:03 AM CDT up reply actions

re: I'm with you BeerCub
The best term for the in-game threads I've come across is "the virtual bleachers." And I think you need to read them from that perspective.

They're not supposed to be well-thought-out, thoroughly researched baseball commentary. They're just people's thoughts and emotions expressed as the game is played. And who among us hasn't bitched and moaned about the players and team from our respective living room couches or, better yet, seats at the game?

I can certainly understand getting annoyed with the in-game thread, but I think it's important to read it in the right context.

by Matt Allison on Jul 21, 2007 9:39 AM CDT reply actions

Could be anywhere from....
....none to five, six or seven, it depends on how the team is doing, do they expect to play them at all, could certain positions use some depth the last month, is there anyone in particular they'd like to look at, and is there a veteran guy who could use the service time towards his pension. There's no set number.

Thread comments
In the last couple days the thread comments have shot up.  With us winning and my computer dying I havent really been around to interactively go through the comments, but I was wondering if this is like fair-weathered newcomers who will soon disappear or if the same regulars are just posting more frequently due to excitement? (like closely following Brewers Dodgers and Padres games)

by INWes44 on Jul 21, 2007 10:46 AM CDT reply actions

Clarification....
i meant disappear not because we won't be playing well enough to justify it, but if youre only posting when we are winning when you get used to the winning you will probably become apathetic again

by INWes44 on Jul 21, 2007 10:49 AM CDT up reply actions

I agree with you completely.
Most of the posters here don't care if the Cubs are winning or not(cwyers, buckmulligan, bennyha, DTJ come to mind), but the other naggers that come on here just to nag took some time off, waited until the other posters on here kind of forgot who they were, and came back with guns blazing, proclaiming how great this season is when the Cubs started to win some games.

I mean, no offense to TheEman or Luigi, but there were comments like this not even a month ago plaguing this whole site, and diaries like this when they were losing more than they were winning. I guess that's why I hate predictions from fans, or when they bring down the morale when the Cubs start losing: you really have no idea what the season is going to turn out like in May-June... it's pretty ridiculous to think that you do.

i watch win or lose, rain or sunshine, everyday since ive been 5 years old like many of you as well. i also spend my nights watching the brewers/padres/dodgers on mlbtv. dont get me wrong-i complained when things were going bad. it was hard not too. i felt we had such a good team and we were losing because of little league mistakes (horrible baserunning, defense, and just bad baseball in general)but im always one of the first to sing the praises of this manager and team since everything has turned around and we are playing like we should. give credit where credit is due and this team deserves all the credit in the world. This has been some of the best Cubs baseball in recent memory. Here is to an amazing second half of the season!! Go Cubs!!

Combo
I think it's a combination of a few things.
  1.  People are bandwagon jumpers.
  2.  But there are diehard fans who are more inclined to seek out Cubs talk when things are going well because talking about stuff when things are bad is a real downer.  I sort of fall into this category.
I just want the Cubs to top the Bears NFC Title Game as my highlight of the year.

Some days though without the crap posters this place can still approach 700,800, maybe even a thousand posts in a game thread just with names of posters we all recognize as regulars. I don't think any other site can top that.

Winning breeds interest and excitement.  It's human nature to stay away from negative and depressing situations.  I'm not ashamed whatsoever to say my cruising of Cub sites has risen exponentially over the past 45 days.

Keep it coming Cubbies
They're playing extremely well right now. They're 8-2 in their last 10, and they put up runs without Derek Lee in the lineup. Any Brewers fan should be very scared right now, especially without Sheets. A big start from Hill today would say a lot about this squad. HIs last outing was good and if he can step it up, the division is theirs. Arizona is a solid squad but I gotta give it to the Cubs today.

JJ Pre-game interview
Guy sounds like he really struggled with his confidence, but he also sounds like that may be coming around.

Liked the Carl Lewis analogy regarding the race. Any word on his clubhouse stature? He comes across as a humble veteran that could be helpful down the stretch.

Was a good listen. Hopefully he can keep hot.

Looking good today. Hill, Marquis and Marshall (combined with the struggles of Eyre and Ohman) make me think that Hendry needs to get a lefty reliever more than another starter. Especially considering the available starters.

I wonder if we could trade Wuertz for a lefty power arm. Especially if Wood looks like he can contribute ...

Soriano's hop
So - what is it anyway? Is it:

A. A nervous tick. Something he does without even thinking about it.

B. A timing mechanism. Something he feels he needs to do to catch the ball when in motion.

C. A self-conscious signature move. Like Sosa's homer hop.

by JohnM on Jul 21, 2007 1:04 PM CDT reply actions

i'll take C
there's no way its a timing mechanism

hill
throwing the 12-to-6 curve more than he has the last couple starts, and it seems like he's controlling it better.  not quite the lights-out hill of april, but he looks like he's getting his sharpness back

nice to see rich hill
throwing his fastball in more 2 strike counts today. thats the second time a fastball right down the middle has been looked at for a strike three. seems as if they are clearly waiting on that curve.

...should have 4-5 runs by now no thumpers in that lineup how'd they ever get above .500?

Pitchers must've been lights-out first few mos...hear they have some great prospects in minors.

My point is:
Hill was still cruisin...at least Lou thought so or he woulda pulled him after the LO walk.

But, on the other hand -
You walk the LO guy and then LEAVE him there messes heavily with the opposing teams heads...

I personally think it was another brilliant move by Lou to leave him in there.

I'm just sayin...

Well, they were fouling a lot of balls
from him. He pitched efficiently enough to get out the inning, but if any of the batters were a couple inches lower or higher, he could have been in trouble.

Unless Pie
proves he can hit major league pitching, especially LHP's, I wouldn't look for Jones to get traded, because he'll be the starting CF. Pagan's the fourth OF and the Cubs are going to be careful how they use him, given the apparent fragility of Floyd and Ward. I'd say Jones probably won't be traded unless Pie can make it back to the big club and prove himself.

Everyone around here has seemed dead set on moving him, but I'm just not sure there's that much interest coming in on the transom.  Moreover, we can't afford a $-saving trade that frees up cash, UNLESS we have someone better to spend it on right away - not when the Cubbies are this much in contention, but missing players.  I think he might stay around for now...

What is Marmol's role now?
Wuertz was used in the 7th inning, Howry in the 8th, and Depster will probably be used in the 9th.  Where is Marmol going to pitch?

by zevkalman on Jul 21, 2007 3:02 PM CDT up reply actions

Lou will leverage Marmol
like he has all season, bringing him in during different "high leverage" situations when other relievers get into jams, etc. He'll also be the primary setup guy behind Howry i'd imagine

i think Marmol's appeared in quite a few games over this week and might be unavailable today

by DartmouthCubsFan on Jul 21, 2007 3:03 PM CDT up reply actions

Before the game, Lou said Demp is the closer,
so, if the game is tied or stays as is, Marmol probably pitches. If the Cubs get the lead, Demp comes in to close it out. I think Lou's going to try to use both howry and marmol as setup men right now.

He's nothing more cardiac closer.

I would prefer a real closer.

by MrDurdenclone on Jul 21, 2007 3:12 PM CDT up reply actions

Then, you haven't seen
ol' Jo Bo close for the Tribe this year. Probably the worst 28 saves you've even seen. Last night, no exception. (However, his defense let him down, making 2 errors behind Borowski in the top of the 9th at Texas.) Some 40 pitches later, he got the save.

His ERA is 5+. Should The Indians get into the post-season, JoBo is why they won't get very far.
He can get away with this during the season, but not in the playoffs.

Dempster has been fairly reliable. Not in the elite closer category, but fairly dependable.

And the Cubs Lose
I know they have been coming back lately but JJ, DeRosa and Pagan are not clutch players.

Funny thing is we are going to lose another game because we couldn't get a runner home from Third with no outs.

Just bad baseball.

by MrDurdenclone on Jul 21, 2007 3:10 PM CDT reply actions

Yo! Don't be a dim-wit!
Who brought in two runs with the only two-out RISP hit?

Ramirez?

It was Pagan.

And any of the other "clutch" players as you say, blew chunks and left him stranded at third. Which - as you see, has become a big problem.

It is July, and we're STILL IN IT! YES!

JJ, DeRosa and Pagan are not clutch players.

And I stated, and meant, Today - Pagan should not be faulted. Even JJ had a nice RISP 2-out hit yesterday.

DeRosa is slumping a bit this week, however.

by TheEman on Jul 21, 2007 3:20 PM CDT up reply actions

Oh well...
This one ain't "meant to be".

The team only has 4 or 5 hits as it is.

And, our best hitter can only manage a weak dribbler up the middle against a rag-arm pitcher. Ugh!

Hopefully, Marshall will pitch well tomorrow and take 2 of three.

This is a much weaker lineup without DLee, and we all see that.

It is July, and we're STILL IN IT! YES!

They still have the bottom of the ninth
to go thru, with Jones/DeRosa/Pagan, which isn't bad considering that Jones has been hot as of late.

I think the Cubs ran into a really solid pitching performance by Owings and Cruz and some really special defense by Hudson and Drew. If the Cubs lose, gotta tip your cap to the D-backs. They've played a solid game today.

True
But the Cubs should have scored one more run and Howry lost his concentration which is why he gave up that homer.

by MrDurdenclone on Jul 21, 2007 3:29 PM CDT up reply actions

The FIRST inning
unearned run was WAY more important, than one home run. True, that won the game -- but we've seen A-Ram make that play all year. The Cubs left runners on in the first, and then stranded Pagan on third in the 4th  with nobody out -- way more important than a solo HR.

You score those runs (as they have been lately) the game's completely different.
