Open Thread: Cubs vs. Diamondbacks, Sunday 7/22, 1:20 CT

A few notes:

  • The Cubs will pass the 2 million mark in home attendance today, in the 51st home date. Attendance through yesterday is 1,989,450, an average of 39,789. If the Cubs continue to play well, they've got a chance to break the team attendance record of 3,170,154, set in 2004.
  • Lou & Jim, a lovefest:
Piniella and Hendry have helped each other this season, Hendry by bringing up players from the Cubs' minor-league system and Piniella by utilizing them. It has made the farm system attractive to teams Hendry might deal with.
  • Jacque Jones: head cleared, playing well:
When things were at their worst July 4, when Jacque Jones was hitting .167 over 40 games and rumored on the Cubs' discard list, he admits to wondering if he still could play the game.

"We all lose confidence and if you say you don't in that situation, then you're lying," Jones said. "I know I have ability, but sometimes the mental keeps you really from coming out. I was down on myself a little bit and it started to snowball."

  • Marlins pitcher and Crystal Lake South graduate Scott Olsen is in a heap of trouble.
  • And finally, a rumor: scouts from Tampa Bay have been spotted during this homestand. Make of this what you will.

vs. Ari -- vs. Cubs
Marshall threw pretty well in his last start, winding up with a no-decision in a loss to the Giants last Tuesday. He has never faced the Diamondbacks.

Petit, who was acquired by Arizona from the Marlins just before Opening Day for Jorge Julio (who isn't even with the Marlins any more -- he was traded to Colorado on May 13), is also making his first start vs. the Cubs, though he threw a scoreless relief inning against the Cubs on May 23, 2006, when still with Florida. He has also faced Alfonso Soriano, who is 3-for-3 against him (two doubles).

Here's today's Mediacenter; the game's on cable in Chicago (CSN), on local TV in Phoenix (channel 3, and on its satellites elsewhere in Arizona), and on Extra Innings.

Trib today or somewhere said...
Not much trade talk or scouts seen in stands..I'm sure they pretty much know what Cubs have by now but might want to check out an Eyre (??) or Jones to see in person, up close, what they've got to offer...what would we be int. in from TB?? They had some good OF'ers still think RF our biggest hole to fill with Floyd's persistent injuries.

by writerinwrigley on Jul 22, 2007 9:35 AM CDT reply actions   0 recs

The Rays will not be interested in...
Jones, Eyre, Howry, etc.  They are going to be interested in young inexpensive starting pitching.  Think Hill, Marshall, etc.

They have a glut of OF, so Jones has zero appeal to them.  They are probably looking to move guys like Baldelli and Gomes, not Crawford, Young, or Upton.

by SouthernCub on Jul 22, 2007 10:48 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Y'know, after thinking...
...about it a bit, if what people like Jayson Stark and Ken Rosenthal are saying about the trade market is true, Marshall would be the best starting pitcher available to a LOT of teams out there. If Hendry is going to put Marshall on the block, I hope he doesn't screw up, and he realizes what position he's in if he decides to deal a starting pitcher.

Good point
Think about it, dealing a young left handed starter with great upside. You are right, you better get pretty good value in return. Hopefully the correct value.

I agree...
Marshall is a VERY valuable commodity.  He shouldn't be dealt for a rental player.  Right now, I'd not mess with the rotation.  These guys (with the exception of Marquis) have been very effective, and they're eating innings and keeping the team in games.

Unless there's a "home run" of a deal out there, I'd leave the rotation alone for now.

Who do you rather see go, Hill or Marshall?

And can we afford to trade a starter now?

I would agree Al - patience is a good thing.

But throw a good dose of belief in the mix too.

I think the two combined with a dash of common sense will serve alot of folks well.

The Cubs and the Rays
Moved from Chicago area last summer --
about an hour north of Tampa -- longtime Cubs fan and bleacherite -- been back for 4 games at the friendly confines and 3 games in Atlanta -- really miss my 20 to 30 games at Wrigley but am surviving.
As for the Rays -- have some talented young hitters and a couple of decent starters. No and I mean no middle relievers.
Their few core guys -- Upton, Crawford, and Delmon Young -- would demand pitching prospects. Young and Upton are not going anywhere. Crawford would be the only possibility. He would be a great addition -- even for a batch of our prospects. If the Cubs are williing to give up some of the following -- Patterson (if Fontenot is our second sacker, why not?), Murton, Cedeno, Hoffpair, Gallagher, etc.
Would he be worth it? Yes -- and I mean bigtime. Crawford -- the Rays only All-Star -- is a terrific fielder, steals bases, hits decently well, and has power.
We could only hope.

Crawford
I would give them Pie for Crawford in a minute plus another prospect. But I don't think he is available and Tampa is notorious for wanting a fortune in trades....

by LT on Jul 22, 2007 9:44 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

A Fortune
Why not a fortune?
Iowa and Tennessee have quite a few guys that have been hitting well over .300 and we certainly do not have room for all of them now and the foreseeable future.
I know that the Rays would want a lot -- but do have the need for 3 or 4 guys who are legitimate starters -- both position and pitching.
Speculation is what it's all about.
The Cubs are certainly not looking at Rays prospects or their pitching and the other position guys for the Rays just do not meet our needs -- players like Pena, Wigginton, Brendan Harris, and Baldelli.
So go for the moon --

by ceegeewow on Jul 22, 2007 9:57 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Uh...
...this is just me spitballing here, but if they were interesting in Pie - or Veal, or any of our farmhands - their minor league scouts would take care of that.

The players the Rays could be scouting come down to: Jake Fox, Scott Moore, Theriot, Fontenot, and Sean Marshall.

Or they couldn't be scouting the Cubs at all.
Maybe they are scouting Arizona because they have a lot more young talent. Hopefully it's the Cubs and they make a good deal.

I just think that it's too much of a coincidence..
...for a team that's two starting pitchers away from respectability is showing up on a day when a young and reportedly available starter is available on the block.

I just hope this doesn't mean that Wade Miller is being considered for a return to the rotation.

amen
One of the worst things hendry could do right now is weaken our rotation. I'd say add a starter if the demands for guys like contreras weren't so ridiculous.

by elgato on Jul 22, 2007 11:26 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Wigginton
I haven't seen Wigginton play the OF in a very long time but this guy would certainly foot the bill for being another one of Lou's "versatile players."

This guy could cover 3b, 1b, and perhaps even 2b along with RF.  If Wigginton is at all competent in the OF - maybe the Cubs should try to give him a long look to help out in RF?

There's always next year.

fun speculation--RF??
agree E-Patt tradeable not a great def. player and blocked in OF unless he could play RF?? Is he righty hitter or switch-hitter?

Murton and others could go also but not sure of Crawford's contract status..is he a RF??

Rays often mention seldom do deals so not expecting anything...I liked Huff he never went anywhere until FA I think.

Cubs young OF down below seems a little barren except for Colvin and he's a few years away unless I'm forgetting someone...anyone here have good read on our OF prospects?? I'm not counting Pie...and with Sori locked in LF for next 5-6 years we only have one opening, RF.

by writerinwrigley on Jul 22, 2007 10:08 AM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Crawford
Patterson hits left handed --
Crawford plays left field for the Rays -- he could play right for us.
Someone commented about Moore, Fox, and Theriot.
Cubs are not trading Theriot -- not because he is a top flight shortstop but for the reason that we do not have anyone to take his place.
Fox and Moore could be in a package but they would need more for Crawford.
I am sure if they are even thinking about other minor league Cubs, they have their people looking at them.
And the comment about the D-Backs -- that could be the reason the Rays guys are here because they have more viable trade possibilities at the major league level.
The Rays are not interested in guys like Eyre, Ohman, Jones, and others like them.

by ceegeewow on Jul 22, 2007 10:14 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

don't moore and fox
Have to play to be showcased? I doubt a start by Moore on Friday qualifies.

by elgato on Jul 22, 2007 11:28 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

think cubs don't want 3 lefty starters
...ideally, altho Marshall and Hill have been pretty good...dangerous to bust up the rotation they've got has been keeping them in games and eating innings, for most part, better than most NL teams.

could see a major-ish off-season deal trading Marshall or Hill for a right-handed pitcher and exchanging prospects..but to do it now quite risky...if Miller can't cut it, no assurance the next guy we call up from minors will be able to make successful transition to starter in a pennant race!!

Miller himself is a risk too...

...let's not trade for him, ever!  However, we could hire him to drive around Ronnie Woo-woo.

Someone over on NSBB...
...transcribed the starting lineup for today off WSCR. I provide it here:

Soriano, LF
Theriot, SS
Fontenot, 2B
Ramirez, 3B
Floyd, RF
DeRosa, 1B
Jones, CF
Kendall, C
Marshall. P

I make no warranties guaranteed or implied about the accuracy of this.

I guess this is the club's way of saying that Floyd, Pagan and Fontenot all hit better than Scott Moore. In which case I don't know why they called him up to start a game, maybe two if he gets the start tomorrow.

On MARSHALL Trade...
Every time I think of the Cubs trading a promising, young lefty (and he IS promising) I think of Jamie Moyer.

Anyone else?

It is July, and we're STILL IN IT! YES!

by TheEman on Jul 22, 2007 11:22 AM CDT reply actions   0 recs

not really
I think we already have Lilly for three more years and Hill, so we're good with lefites. Maybe trading Marshall now would be one of the few times we deal when a player is coveted, as opposed to Barrett, Patterson, Farnsworth ...

There's another reason why now probably would be a bad time to trade Marshall. Namely, who would replace him? Miller's trash, and the trade possibilities are pretty bad.

by elgato on Jul 22, 2007 11:35 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

It would probably be Dempster
but I think he's great trade bait for a contender

Keep Marshall
Really are there worse things than having a couple young left handers with an ERA under 4.0 at the back end of your rotation.  Unless we can get a big time player back in return I would think keeping marshall would be best.
Also if the cubs win today they would be 4-1 sans DLee, awesome.

Both Hill and Marshall
are having trouble putting out a hitter on 2 strikes. They both don't have a good pitch to throw on a two strike count. Hitters are fouling off a ton of pitches on two strikes and both Hill and Marshall are ending up walking them.

They need to improve on this pretty soon or we need to get rid of one of them. They are very similar in a lot of ways.

Hill only has two good pitches
fastball and curve and he is already 27. He needs more pitches, and I would do a trade such as Hill and Jones for Griffey, instead of Marshall and Jones for Griffey (if that rumor was really true..)

and also
we have Veal, Samardzjia, and Pawelek who could fill in the next few years. And Prior, if he does return, needs a spot.

We'd be fine without Hill, after all we already have another version of him in Sean Marshall. Only Marshall is younger and has a better arsenal of pitches.

True...
But they both would be very good as trade bait since they are probably one of the best SP on the market,  but we don't need to trade them so we better get quite a bit in return.  I.e. I wouldn't mind a 1 to 1 trade for griffey but i wouldn't want to add another prospect to it

even though he is sucking it up
the point is, here are the options:
  1. Spread Marshall and Hill out in the rotation so they are not together
  2. Trade One of the two pitchers for a pitching prospect or package him for a great RF or SP
Bring Back Matt Murton!!

by Chanman25 on Jul 22, 2007 1:59 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I do agree on splitting them up
They seem to be very similar pitcher so i would like them spread out.  also maybe have them before big Z and lilly so that we can have a pitcher who usually goes deep so that we can have a long outing to rest the bullpen if hill/marshall have a very short outing

the only problem is
Lilly is kind of, but not exactly like the two pitchers. Its difficult to shuffle them around but a rotation of

Zambrano
Lilly
Marshall
Marquis
Hill

that would be fine with me..

Pie and Murton are due
You know what?  I've been browsing the minor league stats and I honestly think that if we released JJ and recalled Murton and Pie - that would be all the moves we need to make to make this team go.   Murton is batting .328, Pie is batting .364 and they both have something to prove.  Both have gotten "some" time in the majors and know exactly what to expect.  Both have been killing it in the minors and are ready to do the same in the majors, but thats just my humble opinion.  Truthfully, Pie's defense in center and Murton's bat in right makes A LOT of sense to me.  Pie's bat WILL come.

doesnt have to be a flat-out release
He just needs to be taken out of the roster somehow so there can be room for youngsters WITH SOMETHING TO PROVE.  JJ's been in the game for long enough that he should know how to adjust, but because he hasn't and continues to make the feeble attempts at the plate that he does, he needs to go.

IMO only one or two of the hits that he got over the last few days were legit - the others just barely squeaked by.

This might make some people mad
but I think Marshal is more of a gamer than Hill and if we are forced to trade one of the two I would move Hill over Marshal.

Marshall/Hill
I think Marshall has a better head than Hill and it's harder to get to Marshall.  But I think Hill has better pitches.

When he's "on"
I agree - I like Hill's best stuff better than Marshall's.   But either one is going to have to develop another pitch to be successful in the bigs over the long term, and I think it may come down to which one of them can accomplish this the soonest.

We are even having all this conversation
about Hill Vs Marshall because the offense has been pathetic and that puts the pitcher in spot light.

With Lee, Ward and Floyd healthy I think our power is adequate but if one of them is out (for more than a couple of games) I think this team is susceptible to fall.
