Open Thread: Cubs vs. Cardinals, Tuesday 7/24, 7:10 CT

Seems like forever since the Cubs have played, doesn't it? Well, it's only about 48 hours, but coming off two straight losses, I know I am, most of you are, and I'm sure the players are, ready to take it to the Cardinals tonight. The two teams haven't met since April 28, an 8-1 Cubs win in which Carlos Zambrano threw seven innings of one-run ball. It was also the last day of Cardinals pitcher Josh Hancock's life.

Despite the two losses to the Diamondbacks, the Cubs are still 29-15 since June 2 -- the second-best record in baseball since that date (one game behind the Tigers, 28-14, and, surprisingly, only 1/2 game better than the Yankees, 29-16).

Ronny Cedeno is supposed to be recalled for tonight's game, but as of this writing, there are no changes to the active roster list. Jake Fox may be the odd man out, according to tharr's diary this morning, but it could also be Scott Moore.

 Today's Starting Pitchers
Carlos Zambrano
 C. Zambrano
Cubs
vs. Kip Wells
 K. Wells
Cardinals
12-7 W-L 4-12
3.69 ERA 5.75
117 SO 76
59 BB 50
17 HR 12
vs. StL -- vs. Cubs
Z has handled the Cardinals quite well in his career; 6-4, 2.43 in 17 appearances (16 starts). The last time he lost to them was more than three years ago, on July 19, 2004. Z has been hot, and as the acknowledged "ace" of the staff, it's time for him to step up and be the "stopper", in other words, to stop this baby losing streak in its tracks.

I hate to do this because at times, when the Cubs face pitchers with records as bad as Kip Wells' record is, they seem unable to handle them. But in this case, I'm going to go ahead, because Kip Wells is ... just ... plain ... bad. Although he is 3-3, 3.06 in 14 lifetime starts vs. the Cubs, he has also lost games to them like this one, which is also the last time he faced the Cubs.

Some current Cubs have hit him hard: Jacque Jones (8-for-19, .421/.500/.789, 2 HR); Aramis Ramirez (4-for 13, .308/.357/.615), and Alfonso Soriano (6-for-8, 2 doubles, 2 HR). Wells did throw well in his last start vs. the Marlins on July 18, but that's the first time since April that his ERA has been lower than 5.92.

Today's another cable-only day; CSN in Chicago, FSN in St. Louis, and the Mediacenter.

I figured it'd be Moore.
Fox hits righthanded and can catch. Moore plays 1B and 3B and hits lefthanded. We need more RH hitters on the bench.

Good
Didn't Cedeno put up a sick line against the red birds last season? I seem to remember liking him for some reason.

Isn't DLee back tonight?
Oh, I forgot, he was hurting this team anyway.

He

And he definately won't be pulled
after only one inning for giving up nine runs!

Kip Wells is no push over:
Last Game:

DATE    OPP    RESULT    IP    H    R    ER    HR    BB    SO    GB    FB    PIT    BF    GSc    DEC    REL    ERA*
Jul. 18    @FLA    W 6-0    8.0    2    0    0    0    2    4    15    4    103    28    80    W(4-12)    -     5.75

He is a talented pitcher who has just been over worked on a bad team.

Also the Cubs seem to forget how to hit when facing any pitcher with an ERA over 5.00

For some reason I think this Game will be a one run game.

by Joe on Jul 24, 2007 5:20 PM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

"Talented" to his Mom
His best years were 2002 & 2003. 2003 he sported a 3.28 ERA in 176 innings.

I do not know where you get the "talented" from. He never achieved his billing with the White Sox, averages about 1.5:1 K to BB, a 9 year AVERAGE WHIP of 1.5 in 9 yrs...

In nine years he is carrying a 4.7+ERA, which is above league average.

This doesn't mean that he could pitch out of his skull and befuddle Cubs hitters, it just shows that what you say is a stretch about the talented Kip Wells.

It is July, and we're STILL IN IT! YES!

Games
like this are painful, when it seems like the pitching matchup is so lopsided that it seems like you can't lose, but always do. I think I'd feel better if Mateo was going against Carpenter for some reason. Or maybe Ryan OMalley. :)

Let's go Z!

St. Louis
Going to Wed. and Thurs. games.  Can't wait to see the Cubs beat up on the hated Cards.  Looking forward to seeing the new stadium though.

Cards
I really don't like their team, and haven't since the Cubbies gave them Lou Brock for Ernie Broglio :-) but I've been to their old stadium and it was very nice.  The city seemed pleasant also, although it's too homogeneous and boring for me so I couldn't live there.  The fans are actually good baseball fans, even knowledgeable.  They have pretty good sports announcers also.  Other than that, I hate them :-)

My apologies
for suggesting Fox might be sent down. I was merely quoting van Dyck. He's the same guy who just published that our starters are 2nd in the NL with a BA against of .312. Actually we're 1st with a .238.

I guess understanding the numbers isn't a job requirement for reporting the facts.

I hope Cedeno
is not starting tonight; I'm not trying to be rough on the guy, but while he's been raking in Iowa, so has Pie, and we've seen how his numbers translated to the big club. I hope Ronny is simply used as the back-up infielder.

I would love to see Ronny C
Get back up here and play like a real Big Leaguer.
He's a really nice kid who I think often was too busy trying too hard to really think about what he was doing.

I also think Lou needs to use a soft hand with him.  From what I have heard this Kid is his own worst enemy.

I would agree.  Don't start him the first night he's up.  Let me work is way in really slowly.

Couple pitch hits, maybe a spot start next week.

I also think we need to let Fox play a few games in a row to find out if this kid can be the Right handed bat we need or if we need to trade for one.

But you have to trade JJ for a B+ prospect and the Cubs can't pay more than 30% of his salary.

I wouldn't count on it staying available all the time from one address - once MLB finds out about it.

he had a few multi-hit games after the break and he seemed to really relax. its been noted here and other places before that he is a really sensitive guy and doesnt respond well to the booing. in an interview before sundays game he was telling len how he lost his confidence and began to doubt his abilities. but that all seems to be gone as his play continues to pick up. baseball is such an evil game on a guys mind and ego

If steroids are banned, why not cortisone shots?
Cortisone is a steroid.  It enhances the player's performance despite an injury.

Not deadly and not a Felony
Steroids, like any other narcotic, are a felony if not administered by a physician. Quite frankly, both  steroids and cortizone hurt you physically in the long run. Cortizone is a temporary answer.

by louslovechild on Jul 24, 2007 7:44 PM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

That whole subject is about as grey as it gets
I firmly believe that carefully controlled steriod use would be good for baseball. It helps players heal and get back to playing their best.

Unfortunately any leeway in that area and we get back to the mis-use of the 80's and 90's.

Cortisone is a "steroid"...
...which covers a wide variety of substances. Anabolic steroids are the ones used to build muscle mass, which is what people like Bonds and McGwire and Sosa are accused of using. Cortisone is a corticosteroid; its main usage is controlling inflamation; it doesn't build muscles at all. They're completely different.

2-1 relax
a lot of game laft. The Cubs bats will wake up. They've been getting people on and hitting Wells.

We'll get to him.

6-01-2007 the Cubs begin to rise. They will never look back.

we're not a patient club, that's why.
ump sucks. he's squeezing both pitchers.

I can't believe
How defeatist some of you seem to be.

You know what? It's the sixth inning, and it's a one-run deficit.

And you know something else? If they lose tonight, it isn't the end of the world.

There's plenty of baseball left this season.
