Everyone Digs The Long Ball, and Open Thread: Cubs vs. Reds, Sunday 7/29, 12:15 CT

So I write yesterday that the Cubs should trade Sean Marshall as part of a deal to get Jon Garland.

Maybe that's not such a great idea after all.

And just when you wonder when the Cubs are ever going to hit another home run, they smack three long ones -- really long ones, especially Alfonso Soriano's two -- and beat the Reds easily 8-1, evening the series and, even better, picking up a game and a half on the Brewers, who lost the night game of their split doubleheader to the Cardinals, 5-2.

So, the Cubs stand 1.5 games out of the division lead -- one game behind in the loss column -- and two games behind wild-card leader Arizona, though there are now three teams (Arizona, San Diego, and the Cubs) all tied with 48 losses, the Cubs (54-48) having played four fewer games than the Diamondbacks (58-48).

Marshall was sharp in his six innings, allowing only six singles and a walk, and might have gotten out of the game unscored-upon had Jacque Jones not booted one of the singles, allowing runners to advance to second and third with nobody out. The run was earned as it is "assumed" under scoring rules to have scored on base advances on the ensuing two groundouts, but who's to say that one of those groundouts (likely Adam Dunn's) might not have wound up being a double play? Anyway, not only did Marshall throw well, but he got his first hit of the year, a booming double (the first double of his career).

So if you're Jim Hendry, what do you do? We know from various sources -- some more legit than others -- that deals for several different players are being considered. But each day, his emotions -- like ours -- have to be going up and down. After last night, I'm starting to think again, "Hey, it ain't broke, don't fix it!"

But on the other hand, Ryan Dempster had a really shaky ninth inning, loading the bases (and appearing to not be able to throw a pitch anywhere near the strike zone) with nobody out before suddenly figuing out how to retire hitters again (credit, incidentally, to Ryan Theriot and Ronny Cedeno for both making slick plays on Norris Hopper's ground ball that ended the game).

So do the Cubs need bullpen help? In a deal that makes little sense for either team, Houston sent one of their better relievers, Dan Wheeler, to Tampa Bay, for a guy the Cubs were rumored to be after, Ty Wigginton. I'm glad the Cubs didn't get Wigginton, as he seems to me to be nothing more than a poor man's Mark DeRosa. Did the Cubs need Wheeler? Probably not, and Houston wouldn't likely have dealt him within the division. So will there be ANY major deals before Tuesday? Do the Cubs need to make one? I go back and forth on this just about every day, as I'm sure most of you do. In the current front-page poll, 80% of you say the Cubs do need to make another deal before the Tuesday deadline. And don't assume that just because someone (*cough* Matt Murton *cough*) is pulled from the lineup, that he's been dealt. Lou apparently simply changed his mind and decided he'd rather have Cliff Floyd sit today against Matt Belisle. Aramis Ramirez also sat last night, obviously, because it's unlikely he'll play many, or even any, day-game-after-night-game combinations the rest of the year due to the knee injury that put him on the DL in June. This is a good idea, keeping him fresh for August and September.

And here's how tight the National League's races are. If the NL were one league, rather than separated into divisions, here's how the top nine teams would rank:

Mets 58 46 .558 -- Dodgers 57 47 .548 1.0 D'backs 58 48 .547 1.0 Brewers 57 48 .543 1.5 Padres 55 48 .534 2.5 Cubs 54 48 .529 3.0 Phillies 54 49 .524 3.5 Braves 54 51 .514 4.5 Rockies 52 51 .505 5.5
In the meantime, let's hope yesterday's power surge continues.

As all of you know, Z has once again, in the last seven weeks, become the dominant starter we remember from the last four-plus years. He's 8-2, 1.56 in his last ten starts, striking out 71 and allowing only 28 walks and 4 HR in the 69.1 IP in those ten starts (averaging almost 7 per start). He's also become the very definition of a "stopper" -- his last three wins have all followed a Cub loss. He doesn't have to do that today, given last night's win, but winning two of three in this series is nearly imperative. I'm glad to have Z on the mound for this game.

Continuing last night's theme, I have heard that Matt Belisle personally rescued hundreds of people from a sinking boat on the Ohio River just behind the GABP one day when he was otherwise sitting in the Reds' bullpen thinking sad thoughts and minding his own business. (There! That ought to do it. And so should his 0-2, 5.94 lifetime record vs. the Cubs. Aramis Ramirez is 2-for-7 vs. Belisle -- both HR -- and Derrek Lee is 3-for-4 with a double and a HR.)

Today's game is on WGN. It should be on EI -- with the Reds announcers you've come to loathe -- if you don't have WGN -- or try the Mediacenter.

This Jay Payton rumor is making me nervous
he is an older version of Corey Patterson!

from Rotoworld:

The Cubs and Orioles are discussing a Jay Payton trade, with the Cubs potentially receiving two mid-level prospects in return.
Payton for Matt Murton straight up would be a nice move for Baltimore. Payton makes sense for the Cubs as a more legitimate option in center field than Jacque Jones, though he's best utilized in a limited role. Ideally, he'd start over Jones against lefties and allow Jones to slide over to right whenever Cliff Floyd is dinged up.

===

I would hate giving up Matt Murton for just a washed up player..

Now that he is back, play Matt Murton!!

So...
... the Cubs are going to get Jay Payton AND two mid-level prospects? I don't get it.

The Cubs already have a RH-hitting option for CF, Angel Pagan.

Hendry's been after Payton for a long time. 2003 would have been the time to get him, not now.

Griffey...
I would love to see Griffey get a WS ring before he retires.  He is one of my favorite players and one of the nicest guys in all of baseball-a sure fire Hall of Famer.  He deserves to win a championship.  If a Pie for Griffey trade gives him a shot to win that ring this year, then GO FOR IT! Worry about 2008, 2009, etc. later.  WIN IT THIS YEAR!

the Cubs seemed to be tied with the Brewers in the loss column, not one behind.

That's right! Not quite a tie.
Why are the Cubs behind in # of games played? It was already a few before yesterday, then the Brew Crew played a double header. I guess I've lost track of games to be made up?

Easy innings...ha!
That's funny.  Nothing with Dempster seems easy ever.

Anyone else REALLY like the fact that when the Cubs are throwing Big Z, we can actually have some confidence on him?

that was a real tough stretch when him taking the bump was like Marquis of late taking the bump.

I truly believe
that we need to get another starter for sure. After that it depends on what's available, from the looks of it there probably won't be anything worth value/return out on the market. However, even though I believe the Cubs need to make another move, I've got odds at 85% they are not going to do anything else.

by ArmyCubFan on Jul 29, 2007 8:21 AM CDT reply actions   0 recs

As I had mentioned yesterday, it would
be a mistake to trade Sean Marshall. If it comes to a point where we have to trade a starter, it has to be Rich Hill. No one will be interested in Marquis because of his contract. Marshall has a better upside and will prove more valuable than the shaky Hill.

by cubsnlinux on Jul 29, 2007 9:00 AM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Given their histories
Hill has a far better upside, his K/BB ratio dwarfs Marshall and despite Hill being so bad in the Majors last year his numbers are still better than Marshall's.  Marshall has missed significant time in 04, 05 and had problems at the end of last year and beginning of this year.

The Cubs have finally shed their injury prone demeanor that has plagued them over the last 3 years  and I think it would be smart for Hendry to keep that in mind in any moves he makes going forward.

I wouldn't move either of them unless it's a deal that truly benefits the Cubs.  Young pitching is the most valuable quantity in baseball.

by JonH on Jul 29, 2007 9:20 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

The time to trade players
The cubs always seem to trade players when their value is the lowest.  They dump them when they are no longer getting playing time or when they are in deep slumps and getting bashed in the media.

This is a far better time to trade Marshall than if he were getting knocked out of games in the 3rd inning.  The same goes with Jacque Jones.  The Cubs do need to get rid of one of the lefties in the rotation and Marshall is the best option.  He has injury history and his ceiling seems lower than Hill's.

Whoever we get it is not worth moving Pie. I hear the Pie/Murton rumor for Griffey. I keep thinking about the Lou Brock deal when I hear about the Cubs moving Pie.

If it means Griffey.....
....the Cubs should serve up some Pie. That's a no brainer. He's playing well. Most guaranteed HOFers have some drop off ay age 37. He's actually stepped up. A team that hasn't won the World Series since 1908 simply can't be thinking anything but NOW when it comes to adding a player like Griffey. Imagine this-

Soriano, LF
Theriot, SS
Lee, 1B
Ramirez, 3B
Griffey, CF
Floyd, RF
Fontenot, 2B
Kendall, P
Zambrano, P

Granted, maybe Griffey in RF, but if all of the above stay reasonably heslthy, who do youpitch around? Slot DeRosa in for Fontenot if that's your preference. If getting Griffey means giving up Pie and some other prospects, then maybe we'll see what would have happened once the CUbs got Nomar had he stayed healthy.

Gotta disagree...
we do not need to give up a player like this to get an already aging HOFer.  Yes, Griffey would look great in Cubbie Blue but not at that price.  I'd sooner take Dunn's bat for less at this point in the season.

NO way on Dunn....
... while I can't completely disagree with your opinion on Griffey, given his injury history, I would still roll the dice because of what I said earlier. Any team that hasn't won since 1908 that is this close should pull the trigger. But Dunn? I didn't realize he was so one-dimensional until his own announcers pointed it out.

I'm Beginning
to fall off the "Win now at any cost" bandwagon that many of us have been on for several years now.  Look where it has gotten us.

Griffey would be a great addition, but at the cost of Pie and other prospects I think not a good idea.  As stated above, he's an aging HOFer with a very questionable injury history.  Short-sightedness is not what we need.  I think the Cubs have several good years ahead of them that could be curtailed with the aquisition of Griffey for our top prospects, particularly Pie, Hill and/or Marshall.

And so it goes.

by Luigi on Jul 29, 2007 10:09 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I say get Griffey
With Griffey this team has a much more serious shot at the world series.

I'm sorry I've waited long enough.

And if the Cubs trade Pie for him and win the world series as far as I'm concerned Pie can go on and win 20 MVPs hit 1000 homeruns steal 500 bases save children from burning buildings in his free time, discover a cure for AIDS, Cancer and Diabetes and eventually find a way to have world peace and I'd say more power to him.

I just want the Cubs to top the Bears NFC Title Game as my highlight of the year.

Adam Dunn
We got the Reds broadcast out here in L.A. yesterday. Even their announcers (who really aren't all that bad, by the way, no Thom Brennaman) were saying that with the kind of year Dunn is having, he's playing himself into being a platoon player the rest of his career. His numbers from the right side are great (over .300, 23 of his 27 homers) but from the left side he's hitting .211 with four homers.

Why would the Cubs consider big trade for the mirror image of Jacque Jones? It sounds like more and more clubs are backing away from Dunn.

On Jones- the Cubs could do a lot worse than to keep him. He's made some pretty good catches in center this Reds series. Given all the crap he's been through, you have to admire the way he's persevered. The Cubs would have a few less wins had they traded him to the Marlins.

ANy thoughts on the Cubs need for a bigger bat?
MMMMM...Hebrew National

by Kinky Reggae on Jul 29, 2007 9:39 AM CDT reply actions   0 recs

I think that need is pretty obvious
The Cubs have outstanding pitching (especially the non-Marquis starters), but they have a middling offense. The two things that our offense lacks the most are a power bat, and plate discipline (which is better this year, but still not great).

Hendry may try to talk himself out of making a trade, but if he's being honest with himself, I think he knows that the cubs need to make a trade if they really want to make a serious playoff run.

As far as trading chips go, I support trading Eric Patterson if we can net a good return. Trading Patterson would represent one of the first times that Hendry actually sold high, and we have a pretty capable second baseman for two more years in Mark DeRosa (the same can't be said for CF and Pie). I'm reluctant to see the cubs trade Gallagher, even though all evidence seems to point to him as a back of the rotation starter (middle at best), because our system has suddenly gotten quite short on pitching after the graduation of guys like Marshall, Hill, and Marmol.

take out hill
and that trade is magically delicious. The cubs would be foolish to trade a (seemingly) rubber-armed lefty with an above average K/BB ratio, who is really one pitch away from being a perennial number two caliber starter.

Arroyo has been pitching better lately, and would provide insurance for the sinking ship that is Jason Marquis. Of course, this fortuitous situation would be ruined by trading hill.

This team needs the karma Pie brings with him.  The bat will turn around ... I think that he's waaay too good of a prospect to give for Griffey.  I'd toss in Patterson; surely his numbers and talent are worth another team to take a chance on and be suitably rewarded.

Don't give away the talented future just for an antiquated, but having a great year, rental-HOFer.  Arroyo would be nice to see ...

What do we do?
If I was Hendry, the first issue that I would address is Marquis. I don't have the confidence in him to be my number three pitcher, given that Hill and Marshall have the four and five spot locked down. Secondly, would be a closer. Dempster just isn't effective consistently enough to me. Pie needs to rejoin the team to give it that spark for the stretch run. If Griffey falls into my lap, I'd take him, but I doubt the Reds are going to let him fly without asking alot. Lastly, the deal for Laird, which at first seemed pointless, may be a great move. The fact that he is second in the majors at throwing out runners, would key to our defense. If Gagne is part of the package the by all means get it done.

Apparently,
the Reds haven't realized that making your lineup lefty-heavy doesn't affect Zambrano anymore.

this couldn't be more incorrect
Even if Z pitches well against both righties and lefties, the lefties ALWAYS hit him considerably better. Z has absolutely owned righties throughout his career, and lefties have always hit him comparatively well (with better power numbers).

Furthermore, both Dunn and Griffey have hurt Z pretty badly in their careers against him.

Actually,
not to put too fine a point on it, but it could be more incorrect. I could have said Zambrano was a worthless pitcher and that he should be traded without interpose delay to the first team that offers a player up for him. That would definitely be more incorrect. Or, I could have said that Zambrano was a LHP. That, too, would be more incorrect. Or, I could have said Zambrano plays for the Seattle Mariners, in which case, again, I would have written a wildly incorrect statement, a statement more incorrect that the one I wrote originally. Moreover, while lefites have hit Zambrano well over the first 3 months of the season, since June, Zambrano's shaved ~50 pts of his BAA vs. LH, and he's trending from that high water mark more towards his vs. LH totals since 2004 which are .231/.337/.375.

Although Z has been much better
he still has much more trouble vs LH than RH. His OPS splits are .526/.851. That's a significant difference. Beware the first few innings as usually his two seamer is erratic.

You know
I've noticed a lot of people around here like to shout about "regression to the mean" until it doesn't suit their alarmist tendencies. I think we're seeing now in Zambrano a regression ot the mean, a trend back towards his career numbers, which, as far as SLG is concerned, is .373 vs. LH and .329 vs. RH.

Per Will Carroll at BP
The Cubs are after Dontrelle Willis, who may not even be available.  A package of Felix Pie, Donald Veal and Jacque Jones would get the deal done without adding any payroll to the Cubs.  Carroll is not saying the Cubs have offered Pie, Veal and Jones, just saying that the trade works both prospects and money wise.

by Josh77 on Jul 29, 2007 11:28 AM CDT reply actions   0 recs

I don't see this
happening unless the Cubs get a CF in return. With both Jones and Pie gone, who play center everyday? Pagan? And, if it's Pagan, who's the fourth OF? Murton, who's defense isn't good enough to really be a fourth OF? This seems like an odd combination of players. Maybe if they substitute Patterson for Pie...

And I said in my first post that 1) The Marlins may not even be trading Willis and 2) that Carroll is not saying the Cubs are offering this, simply that is what the Marlins would be asking for if they agree to trade him (plus JJ to make the money work.)

Also, I don't respond well to loud-mouths, so if you want a better response next time, I'd suggest you ask for more information a little more politely.  I don't mind being challenged on what I say, I just insist that it's polite.  (Or I get very, very rude.  You wouldn't like me when I'm rude.)

I mean when the Reds beat the Cubs Friday night it was like they were going to the WS the way he was hootig and hollering. This was the case when he was in AZ as well. Is it all because he was fired from the broadcast booth years ago? How long will he bear a grudge?

Fitness test!
Great idea, especially when out-of-shape umpires can't do their job. Other careers require certain physical attributes (pilots = vision; piano movers = big arms). Joe West can't do his job, so he should be fired.

Perhaps this is especially true as pro sports deals with officials/umpires becoming more of a story than they should be.

Even other officials
Hockey, NFL, MLS, and NBA all have fitness req's. Granted, those officials have to do a lot mroe moving around, but if you can't get out to the oufield, you should be allowed to be an umpire. It's a part of his job that he physically cannot perform and it has affected the course of a game.

even with the WGN feed
it looked like a home run.

The fan touched the ball ABOVE the yellow line, and not in front of it.  For the ball to bounce back on the field, well...that'd have to be one magic loogie.

Two things
  1. That was out. I think at worst that would have hit the top of the wall.
  2. Big Z needs to run with two out, not tip toeing toward second. Should have got at least one out of that.
Im surprised they dont have a view from an angle of that play.

Zambrano wasn't busy admiring Fonzie's hit, he might have been awarded home.  I know we want to protect Big Z from himself as often as possible, but a little more hustle might have made West' call a bit less egregious.

But West sucks.

I'm all for instant replay.
Not only that, but getting rid of the umpire calling balls and strikes.  We have the technology to take the human error out of the picture.

Why not?

by BlueSox on Jul 29, 2007 12:55 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I'm mixed on that
I don't know.  I mean baseball does have slight room for error and every ump has their own strike-zone.

However this weekend has been horrible for the strike zone so you could argue that.

by ak123 on Jul 29, 2007 12:57 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

If they ever have replay...
... I think it will specifically exclude ball/strike calls. Otherwise you will subject games to interminable delays.

Like the NFL, you'd probably have to limit each team to, say, one per game. Unfortunately, unlike the NFL, there's no way to penalize a team if their appeal is denied (the NFL team loses a timeout if their appeal is denied).

Maybe you could give each team one per game to challenge calls like this one. Unfortunately, it appears that most of the replays (at least the WGN replays I saw) were inconclusive.

You misunderstand what I mean
by balls and strikes -- there would be no instant replay on balls and strikes.  They would be called by machine.  The ump would have nothing to do with calling balls and strikes.

You couldn't do instant replay for everything,
but not even football does it for everything.  There will always be judgement calls where instant replay wont' work.  But black and white calls like home runs and balls and strikes, again -- why not?

What does the "slippery slope" represent?  Accuracy?  I LIKE accuracy.

70's night?
Okay, the Reds had 70's night last night, did they do anything? I caught the game from the 5th inning on, but I didn't see anything.

If you're going to promote it why not have the Reds in pullover unis like the Big Red Machine days? Why not have the Cubs in the road uniform with the Chicago and the players number in the middle of the uni like in 73(?).

I know the Cubs are doing the same promo on Tuesday, will they do anything to promote it? I think the throwback unis are something that would be easy to do (although the Cubs unis haven't changed a whole lot, but the phillies could wear those old navy blues with the cursive P on it).

by carmenfanzone on Jul 29, 2007 1:08 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Cubs rarely participate
in this type of stuff in the visitors park. The last time I seem to remember  they did so was back at the Vet -- a 50s' type of promotion, as they wore some early 50's uniforms, with the "Bears-esque" Red C (no white piping) cap.

Al would know better, but I believe they have never done anything like this at Wrigley -- wear any throwback stuff.

The Reds wouldn't have looked very different in their 70s unis -- yes, it would have been a pullover -- and the font is different, but their current uniforms are not that far away from the 70s. That's why I don't like them -- I liked their sleeveless design (current Pittsburgh) -- 60's throwbacks.

You could also argue every day at Wrigley is 'Throwback' day. But, it would be fun to see the team in uniforms that date back to the 40s.
But, with that comes the reminder that they haven't done anything since that era...

by San Diego Smooth Jazz Man on Jul 29, 2007 1:25 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

The Cubs...
... have never done a "Turn Back the Clock" day, though I think it would be very popular. Not sure of the reason. They did participate in one in Philadelphia -- I believe the date was June 21, 1992.

Mike Morgan, who started for the Cubs, endeared himself to baseball fans forever by throwing the first pitch of the bottom of the 1st with an old-fashioned "windmill" windup -- he said, "as long as I'm dressed in this uniform, I figured I should pitch like this, too."

Good for him. Cubs won the game.

Murton is the type of
player who's great trade bait -- has shown a little bit in the past....maybe there's some promise there....I'd rather trade him than a young pitcher, to quote a cliche ('you never have enough arms.') The towel-twins are living proof. We thought those two would anchor the Cubs rotation for years, instead their careers sank.

And, I expect nothing from Wood if/when he returns. Why should any of us? We can root for the guy, but the odds are he will have to go home.

We'll see this repeated either next year, or '09 when "the employee" tries a comeback.

Pitch Count
GameDay claims 79 pitches for Z through 5 innings...what can Rothschild, Pinella and others do to get these starters to be more efficient with their pitches so we're not into the bullpen so early?  I'd like to see about 12-14 pitches per inning, which would put Z at 60-70 right now and keep him on a better pace to have a realistic shot at a CG...I believe the Sun Times had an article discussing this today, but there weren't any solutions/suggestions listed, at least online.

That was a joke
But seriously who needs a complete game? Yeah, it's sexy but so are home runs and we're winning without those. You've seen Lou pull pitchers as low as 77/80 pitches while cruising to easy victories for differing reasons and unless the bullpen is overwhelmed you're not likely to see another CG this season and I'm all for it.

by morgane on Jul 29, 2007 1:59 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

lol.
I see. I think a rested bullpen becomes most important in the postseason. The 2005 White Sox being a perfect example. The starters worked pretty significant innnings, both in the season and the playoffs, and, as a result, the 'pen was well rested at all times and there when they were needed.

complete game / pitch count
i don't care so much about CG's, but I want to see more "Quality Starts", as defined by the rule book, from our staff - 6 IP or more, 3 R or less...starters routinely going 7 IP would not break my heart at all...don't need 8, but definitely would like to see more 6-7IP performances than what seems like a recent rash of 5 IP outings...

i'm sure Barrett's the reason Chris Young got hurt

by DartmouthCubsFan on Jul 29, 2007 2:09 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Well
you may not need to wait that long. From Sullivan's blog:

"Michael Barrett. The controversial ex-Cub had another meltdown on Sunday over a called strikeout, leading to the ejection of manager Bud Black. In a glaring case of déjà vu, Barrett's game-calling is now under scrutiny. How long he'll be catching Padres ace Jake Peavy is a question they'll soon be asking in San Diego. Peavy was pounded by Philadelphia on Sunday and has a 5.09 earned-run average with Barrett behind the plate, as opposed to a 1.98 ERA with Josh Bard as his catcher. Padres pitchers overall have a 4.18 ERA with Barrett catching, and a 2.82 ERA with Bard catching."

I'll take comfort in the fact I can admit when I'm wrong.

again
its a small sample

Peavy's starts with Barrett behind the plate have come against PHI, NYM, and ATL (three of the better offenses in the NL)

i PROMISE you i'll admit when i'm wrong on this at the end of the season if the Padres miss the playoffs

by DartmouthCubsFan on Jul 29, 2007 2:15 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

SD
is a very good home team

and since they've acquired Barrett they've played a ton of road games and played against some of the best teams in the NL (PHI, NYM, LAD, ARZ) etc

by DartmouthCubsFan on Jul 29, 2007 2:10 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Still.
... I think the fact that Michael Barrett isn't really a major league catcher has been exposed this season. He could be hidden there the last couple of years when he's hit well. In 2004, 2005 and 2006 his OPS+ was 105, 113 and 121 respectively, well above average.

This year it's 79. If he fails to hit he is nearly worthless.

I suspect he's headed in free agency to an AL team where he can DH and catch part-time. (Toronto?)

"That's my opinion and if you don't like it, well, I have others." ~ Groucho Marx

by Al on Jul 29, 2007 2:21 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

agree with that statement
that when Barrett's hitting like a "catcher" he's not worth much

i mentioned this in a thread a few days ago talking about how the Cubs did win with Barrett as a catcher and that you can win as a team with an offensive minded catcher (see Indians this year)

but Barrett's unexpected precipitous offensive decline has made Hendry trading him at his lowest value as a member of the Cub look meaningless

by DartmouthCubsFan on Jul 29, 2007 2:24 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

It is a small sample, yes
(like our other discussion here about Pie being the lil' buddy to Soriano) but Barrett is NOT the starter. Josh Bard is. That (very quiet decision) came about 2 weeks into Barrett's tenure in SD.

And, as usual the SD media says nothing. They just talk about what a model citizen Milton Bradley is. Every now and then, the U-T's beat writer will mention, buried at the bottom of a story that Barrett's OBP is .265, since coming to SD.

Doesn't Barrett's (alleged) 'demotion' have some significance?

by San Diego Smooth Jazz Man on Jul 29, 2007 2:25 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

demotion, hot temper, poor
performance behind and at the plate, etc.

If Barrett can be called a catcher just because he can put on a catcher's mitt, so can I.

And I'm 44, overweight, and couldn't hit the broadside of a barn door.

There will be a blackout of Tuesday's game on EI. Even though I believed that Comcast Philly, SD/Cox Channel 4/Rogers Sports Net Canada all were to come on line in the new EI agreement -- Comcast Philly isn't on the package. (The other 2 are.)

Since the game is on WCIU, you will need a tin foil antenna. I think that won't work for most of us.

But, I assume the game is on MLB.TV.

They're full of it.
I'm watching on WGN and Carlos looked exactly as he does when he comes off the field any other time. Also, the Reds announcers whould have the journalistic integrity to point out he's got a blister on his right foot, as well. If it popped, or rubbed raw, that might cause a grimace, but I doubt he's got anything serious.

Oh Goodness......

Why do I have this sick, gut feeling that Z could have a hairline fracture on his foot.  He was def. limping off the field and a cracked bone in the foot is usually something that is not discovered right away and can be had with very little pain.....I am going to say extra prayers tonight!

Paul Sullivan's written
about this huge blister he's got on his right foot for about a week now. He wasn't limping. If the Cub trainers were worried, I'm sure they would have taken him out when he got hit in the 6th.

Worthless Cardinals being no-hit
I'm done rooting for them.

If they take 3 of 4, they will actually start believing they are worth more than a bag of rat excrement. We can't have that.

We have plenty of time to catch the Brewers. 1.5 at the end of the day is just fine, if it means stamping out the St. Louis Sanctimonious Jerks.

That would be a big deal, if a young guy like that threw a no-hitter. I can't believe he's throwing a no-hitter. i mean, he hasn't given up a hit all day. A no hitter by Gallardo, huh? That's amazing, I mean, Gallardo thrwoing a no-hitter.

I don't want this to be a three-team race
The faster the Redbirds fall out, the better. A split between those teams is just  fine.

And if the Cardinals get some of their smug wiped away in the process, that can only be good for Cub Nation.

Ok. Cubs just finshed road trip 4-2,
even if Brewers put LaRussa & Co back in their place today, they have a lousy 3-5 road trip and we are tied in the loss column.  Not bad.

The key for us is the next 20 days,  We have no days off and play an extra game against Philly and Rockies while Brewers get a couple of days off in that span.  If we can manage to keep the pressure on the Brewers in this tough stretch, I think we can break them psychologically.  this stretch is key.  I agree with Lou.

Let's hope Pie is back up in Chicago by August 1st!  I like his MoJo.
