Remember back in May when the Brewers started 24-10, and the Cubs were "already" 6.5 games behind, and if the Brewers played .500 ball the rest of the year... ?

Well, since that date Milwaukee is 24-27; the Cubs are, since May 9, 27-26, and the Cubs have picked up two games in the standings (three games since the Cubs' low point on June 2; since then they're 21-10, the best record in baseball). The two teams swap opponents this weekend, the Cubs going to Pittsburgh, where -- thankyouverymuch! -- the Bucs took 3 of 4 from Milwaukee, and the Brewers go to Washington. The Nats aren't very good, as we learned, but the Brewers don't play very well on the road (18-24, compared to the Cubs' 23-20 road record). If the Cubs can pick up one more game this weekend, heading into the break no more than 3.5 games behind, that'll be a road trip well played.

Keep Jason Bay far away from Jason Marquis -- he's .419/.486/1.000 in 31 lifetime AB, with four doubles, a triple and four HR. Marquis threw very well in his last start, and has had a fine first half, even while struggling for a few weeks.

One of Maholm's four wins was at Wrigley Field on May 10; apart from that, a shutout of the Astros on April 24, and a one-run, seven-inning performance over the White Sox on June 15, Maholm has been pretty bad all season. However, he has never lost to the Cubs (3-0 career) despite a 4.88 ERA in four lifetime starts. Time to change that record tonight.

Tonight is one of those TV oddities; because the game is on CSN Plus (with the White Sox getting the primary CSN channel), those of you in Chicago who don't have access to CLTV or an alternate channel showing the game won't be able to see it, while those outside Chicago with EI will. Or, try the Mediacenter.

How about Pagan
He has been quietly very solid for the cubbies this year. He isn't necessarily smooth at CF, but not a liability out there either, and he has not tried to do too much at the plate. In other words, he'll take a walk and hit a single, rather than swinging for the bleachers every time.

a couple questions if you don't mind:
  1. My opinion is that Hendry is often less than truthful, much more so than your average GM. I won't ask you to address that, but do you think he is telling the truth about being a buyer, and do you think he has the authority to decide if they are buyers? Do you think they will be able to sign anyone with money due after this year (i.e. Griffey)?
  2. Do you think anything will be done to address the catcher situation? We discussed today that while you can live without great offensive production if they are great defensively, Bowen and Hill ahve been abysmal offensively (nad have a long track record of not hitting), and are only solid defensively to my eye. If the Cubs are buyers, it would be nice to see them buy something there.

Backtracks, talks in baseball cliches 101..."got just enough runs to get the job done,'' "let's hope we get a well-pitched ballgame'' etc...it would help if the interviewer (Santo just joins in a love=fest, replaced this week by Corey Provis) asked more probative/interesting questions some I'd like to ask:

*Do you feel handicapper with a roster including 3 players who rarely are used in key spots (Jones, Izturis, Eyre)?
*Would you like more offense from your catchers?
*What is the plan with Felix Pie?? Why isn't he playing more?
* Have you ever played or managed in a weaker division in your life? What weaknesses do you see among the other five teams, as well as your own team, at his point?

Lou said today it's up to the organization to see if Pie should stay here or get ABs in the minor leagues. He said Pie probably needs ABs at game speed, but it doesn't sound at all like Lou feels Pie can excel at this level _ at least not at this point.

It's just hard to justify AB's when he is struggling. I know he needs AB's to get out of his slump, one of the ultimate Catch 22's, but that means you take the bat out of a hot hitters hand.

should just stay in CF and catch everything he can. Bat him 8th and let him learn. Let Pagan start a few games here and there as needed. I would much rather see him take his lumps this year and watch the next great defensive CF develop.

And having automatic outs at the 8 spot from our catchers puts even more pressure on the top 7 to swing the bat well, which he has not. But given our options in center, I think he needs to be there...at least more often than he has been, splitting more time with Pagan.

Everyone worries that their "confidence" will get broken and then their "feelings" will get hurt. I say good. Get pissed off if your not performing as well as you think you can. I don't piss and moan and pout if I don't do a good job @ work, why do we think they should?

I do agree that players, in general, shouldn't be handled like fine china. I don't think that Pinella would do that either. If you get sent down there is a reason, good or bad.

this post is the EXAMPLE
Of how a fan thinks who has not experienced the actual competition with a sport. Confidence is always a fragile thing, it is the difference in the mind between reacting and thinking, anticipation and execution of talent and trying to respond.

Pie obviously has some mechanical flaws with his approach and execution at the plate and the competitors on the mound and opposing teams have idenitified this.

Putting him back in AAA will allow him to get his game straight and he will be back contributing this year.

Here's the dilemma
If Lou feels, based on what he's seen as a hitting-coach-by-trade, that Pie is overmatched right now, he won't send the kid out there to fail and ruin his confidence. I suspect they'll make a decision soon.

this is just plain ridiculous..
Our offense isn't aggressive enough and this whole HR slump is making matters a lot worse. PITS has 2 homers already for crying out loud and Maholm isn't as better as the cubs hitters are showing him to be.

it just doesn't feel good to see -
  1. Repeated Starting Pitching failures..
  2. Base running gaffes
  3. DLee's weak Ground outs
  4. Starting pitchers issuing all those 'innocent' walks
etc etc.

just blamed the Brewers sluggish performance on the players being kept awake by being in the same hotel as a bunch of people dressed up as animals for Anthrocon.

they've got their mojo working as well...
get into major jams, get the double play. they have a way of slipping out of trouble. take yesterday, there's no way they should have won that game, but they get 5 double plays and in clutch spots. same thing happens tonight in the first. they get in a major jam, bonds up, turn a great double play, only give up 1 run. that's how the cardinals win, defense bailing out the pitcher over and over again.

i think this one's over as well, but i'm not down on this team. we've been tearing it up. bad night tonight, but we might luck into something. perhaps floyd will find the river.
