The Cubs are doomed tonight. Everyone knows they can't hit lefthanders, and Moyer beat them last year right after the Phillies acquired him in late August (there! See? You can acquire useful players after July 31). Furthermore, Moyer's father-in-law is a well-known former college basketball coach and current broadcaster and he's also been known to rescue small children who accidentally fall into lakes and rivers.

Other than that, it's a warm, humid late-summer day in Chicago and the Cubs are within one game of first place and one-half game of the wild-card lead. Let's go get one of them tonight!

Here's a fun exercise: Jamie Moyer will be 45 years old on November 8. He was drafted in the 6th round by the Cubs out of St. Joseph's University on June 7, 1984, and not long after made his debut with the Cubs' then-short season A team in the NY-Penn League in Geneva, NY. At that time his current rotation-mate Kyle Kendrick was not yet born -- he was born August 26, 1984. No current active Cubs were born after Moyer's professional debut, but Felix Pie was -- February 8, 1985.

Rich Hill is 0-2, 5.75 in two career starts vs. the Phillies. And he has to face Tadahito Iguchi, who is 3-for-5 with 2 HR and 6 RBI lifetime against him. Like I said, we're doomed.

Let's hope
Sweet Lou starts one or two lefties today, which means playing Fontenot and/or Floyd rather than the guy with red hair.  I don't like the all-righty lineup.

Doomed
Yes we are doomed.  Last year Moyer fought back a flotilla of alien space ships that invaded the earth.  I hear that he bronzed one of the aliens he killed, and displays it in his living room.  A real stud.

Jamie Moyers'

Lefties like 1-run games??
Anyone feel like law of averages will begin working in our favor when it comes to lefties? Early in the year, we were 2-12 in one-run games but those stats worked themselves out. I know the correlation doesn't exactly bear out but I think its more of an abberation that we're not hitting lefties. We'll come around as a right handed hitting team.  

By the way, looking at this month's schedule. I think we cool off with 15-13 month and then pick it up with the sub .500 crew in Sept. 88-90 wins!

were doomed! this team sux and we should of been a seller because we didnt make moves at the deadline. theres no way we can beat moyer or any other team for that matter because of our lack of players.

When I see the names Hill and Iguchi...
...I think of that heartbreaking grand slam Iguchi hit off Hill immediately after the Barrett-Piersynski fight. And with Hill being wont to give up the home run ball, and sluggers like Rowand and Howard going to bat for this red-hot Phillies team, the Cubs stand little chance in tonight's contest. I suggest everyone from Lou on down cast himself on the shards of a broken bat to save face.

That even the home plate umpires can get the call right.
He was recently the  hands down winner of a poll of MLB players of which player through the softest. Knuckleball veteran Wakefield was a  DISTANT 2nd.

That said, he is a  GOD. He and his wife have 77 children and only 11 of them are adopted orphans from Darfur. The other 66 include 5 sets of quints, 4 sets of quads, 3 sets of triplets, 2 sets of twins and five "regulars" . Jaimie is so "prolific" that Mrs,
Digger Moyer has spent all but 42 days of the marriage pregnant.
Jaime has also used his powers to stop the rain in Seattle for two whole days when the mayor asked him too. He also personally polished the space needle every Sunday he was not on the road.

My crazy theory for the evening:
Tonight every guy in the Cubs lineup should pull out a bat that is one grade heavier than usual. That way they won't be as out in front of Moyer's pitches, and their timing won't be messed up tomorrow when they see a normal pitcher.

That's a lie.  And you know it.  Murton most certainly did "produce" last year.   And more importantly, he's still young.  If you are looking at "past" performance, the oldest and crappiest veteran is going to have better stats than a young stud.

near the Phillies bullpen with a pipe in her hand.  Don't be surprised if Moyer pulls a "Nancy Kerrigan yell" and grabs his knee right before the game.  Lou has things under control.

a strategic decision that he would be better used tomorrow. Not sure on resting Theirot but Lou likes to juggle that lineup

Yep
Sweet Lou mentioned he was gonna juggle the lineup and play his bench during this grueling stretch of 13 games in a row.  The Cubs don't have only two off-days in the long, grueling month of August.  I trust Sweet Lou to manage this ballclub.

The lineup reflects pitcher-batter splits
Jones and Kendall have faced Moyer the most (and Soriano) coming from the AL, and Jacque and Jason have done well against him, at least in terms of getting on base. Cedeno and Murton have both actually faced him and succeeded. Meanwhile Aramis is 0-5 against Moyer, Theriot is 1-6

Not saying
that's the only reason Ramirez is sitting - or the only reason behind Lou's lineup choices in general - but I bet it's one of them.

Some of the old science of coaching/managing is to:
A) When you start a lot of non regulars they often perform one game exceedingly well.

B) This makes sure that everyone in the dugout is playing regularly so you show up every day ready to play

C) It causes the team to play as a team especially when a star is down.

D) Aram must be sat at least once a week so he doesn't play more than three games in a row.

E) Theriot is not a real full time player so playing Cedeno once or twice a week is actually good for Theriot.

F) This allows Fontenot an opportunity to play.

G) It really screws up fantasy baseball stat heads

Cedeno would be better off going to the plate
with no bat.

He would have a better chance of reaching first.  The pitching in the PCL must not be very good.

Thought A-Ram would rest Thurs. day after night game deal...agree with playing Kendall after big hit last night and like getting Cedeno some PT, this kid was hot in minors gotta get him some AB's.

Ditto Murton like how Lou juggles sure a contrast from Durocher days when the same "regulars'' were trotted out every damn day...baseball folks have gotten smarter over the years, eh?

Just gave up 7 in an inning and two thirds. Also VERY ugly night
so far for Looper and Wandy Rodriquez. Not likely they get past the third.

I just have to vent a little.
On my way home just now after a long day, I turned on my XM and tuned in espn radio.  There I find Doug Gottlieb(sp?).  Well, I've hated this guy since he got kicked out of one school and then come to Oklahoma and play for OSU.  Being an OU alumus I tend to not like the pokes.  So, then after he graduated idiot-boy got a job flapping his gums on the local sports talk station.  Now he's national.  It blows my mind.

Anyway.  The point is that he said A-Rod's 500th HR is boring.  That it doesn't mean anything to anybody but Yankee fans.  That it is not that great of a feat to have hit 500 HR's. "Call me when he gets to 700" he said.  Then started ripping on the Rangers for making a big deal about "his 500th" HR.  I know, it was 600.  He said that like 5 times before his producer corrected him.  "Still," he says, "it's not that big of a deal."

That's your ESPN quality opinion makers right there folks.  With Dan Patrick leaving who's their "#1 guy?"  Sad.

Don't understand
all the Murton defenders. The guy was pretty awful early this season. I'm glad he's starting and that he's getting another shot, but the criticism of him WAS valid.

And don't even get me started on Cedeno. Why Lou is starting him AND hitting his sixth is beyond me.

He was better than Jones but the contract status of Jones kept him up.  More importantly, baseball is not a sprint, its a Marathon.  Murton stumbled a bit at the starting line and was essentially removed from the race before he reached the one mile marker.   EVERY player has periods where they play well and play badly.  Virtually every player plays well when they get consistent AB's and don't play well when they get 1 or 2 starts a week.   The fact is that Murton earned a chance to be a regular starter and did not get it.

I'm no JJ fan. But he's left handed and he can play more positions than Murton. Even if he still had options, JJ probably wouldn't have been sent down.

And whether you agree with it, the Soriano signing took away Murton's "right" to be a starter because they both can't play left and because Murton was a disaster earlier this year in right.

Look, I LIKE Murton. But I don't see why he has such a group of defenders. I don't think he's done enough to deserve them.

because when given a full time job
he's shown he can be better than what we currently have in RF

an .800+ OPS and his defense isnt as bad as it looked early in the season because he had little experience playing RF

he's an adequate defender with a slightly above average bat

right now we have a below average defender in RF with an average bat

I think the jury's out about Murton's defense. If he improves, that's great. But until he does, I don't think he should have this cadre of defenders.

That, combined with the fact that Floyd is left handed and hitting .300, means I'd rather have Floyd.

I hope Murton has a great last two months. I just don't think he should have half the board so solidly behind him.

None of these chances easy though Lilly getting hit pretty hard...

Agree on Pie's defense obviously be better than JJ...this inning mainly Hill's fault.

Don't like Sarge's voice either...decent analyst and this is good idea to rotate with visiting team and get read on another team, wonder why they don't do it more often?

That actually makes sense (I've seen Lou do similar things in the past) because Moyer is theoretically the least threat of their hitters.

And with 2 outs, putting in a fresh arm throwing smoke (as he did) makes it more likely to get Moyer out.

i dont know how accurate their pitch tracker is but it shows that rich hill was getting squeezed a bit tonite.  he definitely was not getting some of the calls that jamie moyer was getting on the corners.  

hill certainly was not the picture of control tonite, but he didnt get any help

Gameday shows Murton got HOSED by the ump
on both the called strike two (waaaay inside) and strike three (outside).  Why do they always do this to our rooks?  Pie might still be up if he had gotten a fair strike zone.  Being a star in AAA just teaches our guys the "veteran strikezone" which they don't get the benefit of in bigs without the experience under their belt.

...brought in a "tight'' situation where he had highly likelihood to succeed against opposing pitcher a left-handed hitter...and took from there.

Eyre could really help down stretch against some tough lefties Ohman's been good lately...

Our bullpen's been key to this turnaround when get in a pen-game like this like our chances, generally.

Alfonseca here looks pretty good remember how horrible for Cubs?? Relievers so finicky and unpredictable depending on circumstances...

on Comcast here in LA, I went on mlb.com to see where the pitch was and the ball 4 call could not have been any more in the middle of the strike zone if I used a protractor and ruler to draw it there.  I don't get where these umps come from.  Htank goodness it didn't matter.

Phils are a good barometer for our team right now
It's no surprise that this 3rd game is 4-4 in the 7th.  They have been on a similar upward swing as us, and we might be looking at a playoff preview in this series.  I really think the Phillies are a better team than NY right now.

That said, with 4 games against them, let's win 3.

which is alot of pitches for a only 0.2 innings.  Idea being wearing out arms to get more guys so you can find the one who's either having the bad day or is named Eyre

Rich Hill has been a big bull pen killer so far
and this cannot continue. We can't burn the whole pen in one Rich Hill outing. This is august and I would give Hill one more chance and if he still doesn't learn, bring up gallagher.

Lou is right .. It's a GREAT FEELING NOW ..
.. and it can change in a heartbeat ..

The rotation has got to get more consistent. It has been a miracle out of Scripture to see the bullpen pull together as it has been, but they can't keep that up the next 8 weeks. Lou is absolutely 100 percent RIGHT.

Lou confirming Wood will not pitch until the Mets are in town.

Lou isn't too excitable right now because lest we forget - 6 years ago he managed a team to a record tying 116 wins -

I've said this before, fly under the radar. It's really best.

84 -- The Cubs were destiny's darlings.
03 -- Same deal.

Nobody (except in 2 counties) gave a s**t about the Padres and the Marlins.

Sneak in. Let the team be ignored -- really, it's better. Why let Fox run the damn goat back and forth and back and forth and there it is -- the weight of history on the Cubs backs, once again.
The Red Sox had just as much -- even more pressure on them.

(The White Sox had no such pressure, no matter what their fans say. They may not have won since 1917, but let's face it -- the team had no national recognition. Chicago is a Cubs town, and will always be.)

When you are the '03 Marlins/'84 Padres -- no expectations. It was all on the Cubs. Let's put the burden on somebody else while the Cubs win.

This team is in no way as talented as '84 and '03. However, there's a culture being created her, through Lou Pinella. Whether the Cubs win or not this year, there's a paradigm shift going on here.

This is an overall team effort. Nobody's waiting for the 3-run HR. Fontenot over Sandberg? Uh, no.
Theriot over Dunston? No. Whoever is catching today v Davis? No.

Is Z better than Sutcliffe? Maybe. Dempster over Smith? No. Wood/Prior of that era over Hill/Marshall? No. Not yet, anyway.

However, Piniella is a better leader than Jim Frey or Dusty Baker. Of that, there probably is no debate.

Times, they are changing. Here's a team that's winning with less overall talent. The 84 Cubs were superior to the 84 Padres. The 03 Cubs were superior to the 03 Marlins. But neither of those Cubs teams could win when it counted.

However, the Pads and the Marlins won when they had to. I see glimmers of this right now. Let's enjoy the mission the '07 Cubs are on. (Thing is, these guys don't know they are on a mission. Let's keep it that way. Let them live in a vacumn. Don't tell them about goats and curses.

I, like Al and many others here of the same demographic have had our hearts ripped out, stomped on and set afire many times.  Revel in this, but there's plenty, plenty of baseball left.

Funny thing, WGN ran that Pinella promo over and over and over in April and May while the team lost. NOW -- NOW is when that promo, with Lou's words from his introductory press conference finally is manifesting.

Oh yes, by the way -- the starters must give us more innings!!!

Also notice
Their lowest water mark was 9 under 500 at 22-31 which was 53 games.

Today they played their 106th game which was 53 since.  And went 35-18.  And we are at our high water mark of 8 over.

They have 56 games left. Shoot for 33-23 they'll do it.

I just want the Cubs to top the Bears NFC Title Game as my highlight of the year.

Yankees (9-15)

Not just any third place team
To be fair, the Braves just made a lot of moves.  There's something to talk about there.

Those trades, to me, were a pretty big risk.  If the Braves can get back on top of their division and make the playoffs they look great, and if they can't they're out a lot of good prospects for nothing.  That's worth some analysis.  No cable for me, so I can't evaluate the specific coverage, but in theory I think some Braves coverage is warranted right now.

Cubs being first in the devision is not news until they can sustain it. It's not a pennant race for poeple following other teams.

Ronny Cedeno, 1-4, walk, RBI, run, AAAA player who shows that the PCL has no good pitching

...Theriot will never be the starting shortstop on this team. Izturis is a Gold Glove shortstop who's an All-Star. Theriot's alright for some occasional time at second base.
