Open Thread: Cubs vs. Rockies, Sunday 8/12, 2:05 CT

As we discussed yesterday, there's no Scott Podsednik to the Cubs deal. Never was, in fact, despite the headline on that link, which reads: "Rumored deal for Podsednik dead". The article explains:

One source suggested the chances were never better than "one in a thousand" from the outset.
Exactly. So don't believe everything you hear on sports talk radio. Or read. Consider this article by Gordon Wittenmyer in today's Sun-Times, which discusses Lou Piniella's idea to use Ryan Dempster in situations other than closing, to get him some more consistent work, and then says:
The move could be a precursor to Piniella moving Dempster to the starting rotation, possibly next spring, as he planned to in May, with Marmol getting a shot at closer.
That's directly contradicted by this interview Wittenmyer conducted last Friday with Dempster, which has this exchange:
Q: Has there been any more talk about you becoming a starter?

A: No. None at all.

Q: Would you still like to return to being a starter?

A: For right now, I just worry about trying to go out and do my job. I honestly don't think about it. It doesn't make sense to sit there and concern myself with that when I'm trying to do my job for the rest of this year.

As we all know, returning Dempster to the rotation would be a really, really bad idea. Why do these things get stirred up, especially now, in the middle of a pennant race?

This is a joke, right? A 36-year-old pitcher who hasn't been in the major leagues in two years, and hasn't started a major league game in eleven years, is going to start today for the Rockies?

I checked their Triple-A roster. There's not a whole lot of there there, as Gertrude Stein might have said (and that quote seems appropriate, given the Oakland A's cap that Harikkala is sporting in the photo above). Elmer Dessens? Dan Serafini? Dave Veres?!?!?! What are they trying to do, reconstitute the 1999 Rockies? Or, even worse, the 1999 Cubs?

To repeat what I said in the game recap earlier this morning, you well know how the Cubs do against pitchers like this.

Sean Marshall has never faced the Rockies. Harikkala has two lifetime relief appearances against the Cubs, both in 2005. The only Cub who'll play today that he's faced for more than one at-bat is Jason Kendall (1-for-2).

So there's not much to go on in terms of predicting today's starting pitcher performance. Marshall got lit up in his last start against the Astros, pushing his ERA over 4 for the first time this season.

Today, you can find the game on WGN, and also at the Mediacenter.

I still say --
We win this and make it 3 of 4, but I understand the caution here. However -- it's more likely this guy is bombed out in the first.

If he was a rookie, just up -- then I'd be worried. That's when, traditionally, there are problems. But a guy who should be in a slow-pitch softball league in Elgin? The Rocks are desperate today. This could be a blow out for the Cubs.

Familiar?
What are the chances we take first pitch hacks at this guy and get nothing from it?

I don't know why but I'd rather have us play against a 12 game winner...we seem to have better chances.

I don't want to seem pessimistic but let's be honest---this is how we've been playing.

The Cubs have scuffled long enough with these types of jokers. This yokel shouldn't make it out of the second inning, even without Rammy and the Fonz. Time for the Cubs to shrug off yesterday and bust a game wide open early.

I will freak out if this RH pitcher
suddenly comes out throwing LH.  I can't believe the Rox didn't go all the way down into the bowels of their farm system to find a lefty, given our inability to beat unknown lefties.

If we see this guy warmng up lefty, we are finished!  Let's be careful out there...

Shouldn't matter.
I'm tired of being scared of junkballing lefties, too. This guy is a 36-year-old career minor leaguer for a reason: he can't get ML hitters out. The Cubs need to stomp a mudhole in his butt and walk it dry.

Last night when Rich Hill plunked that guy
in the dome with the slow curve, I actually thought to myself that if threw that same pitch at Biggio's dome, it would stick to that Stick'em infested helmet of his.  That would be funny.

I don't like seeing a guy plunked in the head, but I don't think a slow curve at 70 mph actually does much to the head/helmet.  And in the case of Biggio, I think there is a good chance it would stick to the helmet.  Would the ump have to kick Biggio out of the game for having a foreign substance on his helmet--something he obviously has, but something the umps never called him on?

Prince Fielder...he is neither.

Way off topic today, kinda
but, I went to the Diamondbacks game Fri night and they played a great game. Livon Hernandez had one inning where he lost it a bit and gave up 3 consecutive jacks, but the D Backs can play long ball, small ball and really good defense. They are streaky and have been winning and in 1st place solidly, but if the Cubs play them in the playoffs (if we get there) they will have their hands full. Plus, the 'Backs always beat us anyway.

As highly as Murton is touted on this site
by some and destroyed by others, he's a good player but probably should not bat clean-up
2007 Stats: AVG/OBP/SLG
.268/.341/.399     with runners on .206/.286/.286
given small sample size career numbers
.296/.365/.450     with runners on .246/.346/.410

i feel like this is just me venting after a GIDP in the first innning but seriously, I'm not saying he's not a major leaguer but he should be hitting lower even in our line up

Although recently DLee has been slumping
criticizing the guy with the highest BA and OBP on the team with over 100 ABs for not extending an inning is not really a problem. The stats i showed was Murton's lack of production from any spot in the lineup with runners on and they drop further with RISP

The humidor at Coors...
...only keeps the ball from traveling as far. It does nothing to address the other reason pitchers hate Coors Field: the dry, thin air makes it difficult for breaking balls to actually break. For guys like Carlos Zambrano with a plus fastball and a nice sinker that's not so bad. For flyball/curveball pitchers like Hill/Marshall it's a death sentence.

Because the Rockies have to live...
...with Coors Field all the time, they tend to avoid installing guys that rely heavily on curveballs and on flyball outs into their starting rotation. Wrigley (this year) is a great place for guys like that to make a living, so normally it pays off for us.

That's why I asked
I can't remember him throwing anybody out.  I am aware that we didn't sign him for his arm, but moreso despite his arm.  However, shouldn't more be expected from a major league catcher-even with below average defense?

I'm a fan of Kendall and I do appreciate his offense while he has been with our club but it seems as though any steal attempt is nearly automatic with him behind the dish.

He might be better off using the pitcher as a cut-off man :-)

It's really funny these days when someone wants to criticize our team they remember to add - "We are most definitely still in it". I think this is like a defense against all the eternal optimists who might be just itching to flame.

Anyways you are right, we are making way too many mistakes and with some key players injured and DLee in a slump it won't take a long time for us to construct sentences without including - "We are most definitely still in it."

Not only does
the team need a day off but I do too.
I love this team!!!!!

Help!
I never played baseball, couldn't hit a fastball, but those of you that have, especially anyone who played professionally, could you answer me a question I have had for years.

What happens to a baseball team, or individual player, that causes them to suddenly lose it after playing so well? I mean, look at Fontenot, what in the world has happened to him? He was a good, solid hitter with a good eye, now he couldn't hit the water if he fell out of a boat.

Help me out here!

Um...
...Mike Fontenot was, is, and probably will ever be a mediocre baseball player, a second-string roster filler kind of guy, who just happened to have an absurdly lucky month (and it was so much luck that I haven't the words; just look up his Batting Average on Balls In Play).

So what happened? Regression to the mean happened.

I'd say this is pretty dead on
and accepted as the "deal".

Been awaiting him to turn back into a pumpkin for a long time, but every time I count him out - he goes 3-4 w/an rbi!

I still want to root for him, though.

It is AUGUST, and we're STILL IN IT! YES!

Well, look at this way
We can have players like Fontenot, Murton etc (in fact a lot of good teams do) in the lineup but only if the high priced good hitters take up the slack and hit like they can and are paid to. If not, unfortunately the focus shifts to these Murtons and Fontenots and we expect them to come through every time they are at the plate which they can't because they aren't that good.

Nail meet head
totally agree.

I agree with the above statements.
However the answer to your question in general terms could be a number of things: fatigue (needing a day off), a nagging injury, personal problems (which the public is not likely to know about and I, for one, think this happens a lot more than people realize) or, the opposite of what happened with Fonty, a string of shitty luck (rough ball/strike calls, being robbed by web gem nominees in the field, etc.)
Soriano's Contract: Approximately one dollar for every pitch in the dirt that he swings at.

Thanks Bros
I especially appreciated Ryno's comment about personal problems at home. You're so right! If our guys have worries about something going on personally, or being sent down, or beinng DFA'd, traded, or whatever, I can see how it would affect their play.

I do know that I would much rather have their struggles now rather than mid September.

Excited?
Am I the only one excited for tomorrow's day off?

I am in no rush to watch a Cubs game till Tuesday with a rested team!

by ak123 on Aug 12, 2007 4:45 PM CDT reply actions

and Ramirez
expectd to be back, right?

by INWes44 on Aug 12, 2007 4:48 PM CDT up reply actions

I hope so!
I think Lou did a poor job this trip giving guys rest.

I know the bench is thin but Lou should have utilized Patterson, Cedeno, Hill, Floyd a little more.

Lee, Theriot,Jones to name a few really could have used an extra day off during this trip.

An expected loss that game could have generated 2 or 3 more wins later in the week.

Ramirez
I live in So. Ca. so I don't hear the inside news, is Ramirez going to be cleared to play on Tuesday.

Well we split
the series and now need to move on. Hope they all get rested and are ready to go on Tues. night.
I love this team!!!!!

They need to get their heads out.
I know that having to curveballers like Marshall and Hill going wasn't a great thing in the last two games but Marshall left the game a tie.  Hill obviously one hitter too long.

The hitting on the other hand, yeash.

by MiniAndretti on Aug 12, 2007 4:49 PM CDT up reply actions

Agree
I am especially pleased that they at least split a series with a team having a winninng record. But the Houston series really hurt the team.

How absurdly bad WGN's programming is outside of Cubs games?

I don't
understand the ragging on Fontenot. Thursday night he hit the ball on nose 3 times, line drive outs, had two hits today, still hitting very close to .300. Is he going to keep the pace of a .340 hitter hell no, but come on guys, he for the most part has been pretty steady.
Lets worry about Murton, Koye Hill, Pie and Floyd, Fontenot has out hit them all.

by Johnny Callison was a Cub on Aug 12, 2007 5:22 PM CDT reply actions

I dont think
that anybody is "ragging on him."  It's difficult to argue with the fact that Fontenot isn't THIS good but some people haven't realized it.  What we are seeing now is the real Fontenot and some are disappointed, unfairly in my opinion.

agree
If he can hit .290 the next 47 games, I will take it. More than anything this lineup needs Rammy back in it on Tuesday.
I am more concerned about Hill and Marshall than Fontenot.
