Around SBN: Knicks Beat Lakers With Familiar Strategy

Open Thread: Cubs vs. Reds, Wednesday 8/15, 7:05 CT

Random baseball note: former major league infielder Jose Offerman was arrested in Bridgeport, Connecticut last night and charged with assault, for attacking two Atlantic League players with his bat:

Offerman, playing for the Long Island Ducks in the Atlantic League, homered in the first inning Tuesday night. The next inning, he was hit by a pitch from Bridgeport Bluefish starter Matt Beech and charged the mound with his bat.

Catcher John Nathans was hit in the head and sustained a concussion. He tried to keep playing, but left the game with nausea and collapsed in the dugout, team spokesman Nick Razzette said.

Beech, a left-hander, sustained a broken middle finger on his right hand. Both players were treated at a hospital and released.

Beech is also a former major leaguer -- he pitched for the Phillies in parts of three seasons during the 1990's. Offerman was part of one of the goofiest plays of the lost 2005 season on May 6 at Wrigley Field when, with one out and the bases loaded and the Cubs leading 2-1, Placido Polanco lined a ball back to LaTroy Hawkins, who whirled and threw to first to try to double Offerman off -- which would have ended the game with a Cub win. Instead, the ball hit Offerman's helmet and flew into right field, two runs scored and the Cubs lost. (Not coincidentally, a few days later Ryan Dempster was installed as Cubs closer.)

That notwithstanding, what Offerman did was beyond inexcusable and he should not only be banned from baseball, but I'm glad that criminal charges have been filed. Stuff like this and the assaults that have gone on in hockey games shouldn't be excused just because they're in a sports venue and not on the street.

 Today's Starting Pitchers

vs. Cin -- vs. Cubs
Where do the Reds GET these pitchers? Dumatrait is making his third major league start, and he's lefthanded, and that ought to spell doom for the Cubs tonight. In addition, when not pitching Dumatrait distributes badly needed medicine to Third World nations, helps to replant rainforests while he's there, and is going to adopt a set of needy quintuplets.

Ted Lilly can't do all that, but he has been the Cubs' most consistent starter all year and probably the best free-agent pitching signing, period, for any team. He is 1-1, 1.38 in two starts vs. the Reds, both earlier this year.

Random personal note: my friend Brian, who sits with us in the bleachers, and his wife Kristy welcomed a baby girl last night, 7 pounds, 5 ounces, named Katelyn Ann, which makes my friend Dave a grandfather for the first time. No, the baby wasn't actually born in the bleachers, as we joked with them earlier this summer. Congrats to the entire family.

Random site note: if you are interested in ordering one of the BCB shirts that we've been discussing here for the last couple of weeks, please check out this diary for more information.

And, as of this writing, first round draft pick Josh Vitters remains unsigned. He must be signed by 11 pm CT tonight, or the Cubs lose his rights.

Today's game is on WGN, so most of you should have access; if not, check out today's Mediacenter link.

I think Al forgot to mention that Dumatrait also singlehandedly saved an entire litter of puppies from a burning building.

Anyway...Hoping for a good start from Lilly tonight. That, and some offense. Last night was less than spectacular. Any lineups posted yet? Let's get back on track tonight- GO CUBS!

Your results may vary.

Dumatrait
also was invited to do the artwork for the BCB shirts that people are talking about.

The invitation to Dumatrait was made by BCB after the Louvre in Paris destroyed all their paintings to make room for Dumatrait's artwork, which the top art critics in the world have universally claimed to be the best ever done.

BTW, I have NOT seen how the BCB shirts look, so does anyone have a picture I can link to?

Too bad he never cries.

Throught concentration, Dumatrait
has the ability to raise and lower his cholestrol.

Why does he raise it you ask?

So he can lower it.

to more serious matters, I was at the game that he lost to the Reds back in April. He pitched a good game, but the big boys forgot their bats at home and they lost 1-0.

Quick thought
although what Jose Offerman did by attacking someone with his bat is deplorable, I think if this is legitimately considered a criminal act so too should purpose pitches that hit batters that provoke these type of incidents.  I know the argument that this is a way of baseball policing itself but much like DLee's (a player notable for his controlled emotions) reaction to a pitch high and tight, these pitches that purposefully go after a batter are just as dangerous and should warrant the same type of suspension, i mean as a hitter you are placed at a significant disadvantage.  I'm not saying Offerman should be let go, but its not like he randomly attacked a pitcher with a bat, he felt that he was initially attacked and retaliated

Go get them Ted!
I remember something funny Brenly said one time about Lilly.  Brenly was talking about how intense some pitchers get before they start the ballgame.  He said Ted Lilly walked by the lineup card and said to nobody in particular "I can't believe I'm batting 9th again".  I just found that funny.

2005 Game
My family and I were at that game in 2005.  We were sitting in the new dugout box seats behind home plate.  That game was the essence of Cub-ness.  The best of times and the worst of times.

Mark Prior (!) pitched a great game, 1 ER in 8 innings but the Cubs could not score.  Jose Macias (!!) led off the 8 with a pitch hit.  After 2 outs, DLee nailed a pitch for a 2 run homer to put the Cubs up 2-1 and Wrigley EXPLODED.  DLee came out for a curtain call and I have the best picture I have even taken at a ball game of DLee raising his hat to the crowd.  Excellent picture from 15 feet away, and the crowd go wild....

And then Hawkins throws the game away, literally.  At first we could not figure out what happened and we almost cried when the umpire motioned in TWO runs from 3rd AND 2nd.  Of course, we did not score in the 9th.

Praying for a win tonight
It would probably kickstart the team considering we were ten feet of fly ball from winning last night.

by SouthsideCub on Aug 15, 2007 4:43 PM CDT reply actions

that was pretty heartbreaking
it looked good off the bat and almost seemed to perfect since there was a man on, 2 outs, blah blah blah....no help from the wind gods when we needed it. I'd like to win a game decisevly for a change. Other than that one Rockies game, haven't had one in a while. Have we? They're all starting to feel the same to me.

Nope
I posted too and nobody seems to care. I can't blame them considering it doesnt mean a damn thing if the Cubs don't handle their business. The Brewers are sitting there saying, "we dont want it Cubs, you take it" and the Cubs are saying, "No! We dont want it either, you take it".... and the Cardinals are just about to come and take it, and laugh all the way to the World Series.....again.

Sounds about right.
I thought it was interesting divisional news if nothing else. Considering Prince is one of the most popular Brewers. Oh, well.

Yeah, this is the most uncomfortable I've felt in a race. It seems nobody wants it. I know I should be happy we are in this position, but damn if I can't help but think of how many games we would be ahead if we were playing decent ball.

Today hasn't been a good day
First off, I found out I missed promotion to Staff Sergeant by less than 1.5 points, and in my specific Air Force career field, was the 20th person not selected.

Second, my Nebraska@Wake Forest Football Tickets still haven't arrived... I can't wait for 'em to get here!

So with that said, come on Cubbies.  Make my day.  PLEASE!!

Sorry about your promotion miss.

Is this something that comes around annually?

Are there any "politics" in armed services promotions?

Any "appeal" process?

I hope you have another shot soon.

Beer? Sure thing!
I'll be starting in a few minutes here.

Yes, promotions are done annually.  In the Air Force, you compete against your career field, earning points the following ways:

Time-In-Service, Tim-In-Grade, Decorations, Performance Reports, a test over everything Air Force, and a test over your career field.

Not really much politics involved, until you get to the top 3 enlisted grades where a board is also convened.

I heard he had been banned by all the local bars in Cincy... he keeps ordering water for the other patrons and turning it into wine - very bad for business.

I also heard he fed the entire crowd at the Great American Ball Park with five hot dogs and one bun.

Maybe he'll be a little tired from walking all the way across Lake Michigan to get to Wrigley....

Questions for the night...
  1. Will our offense stay warm or even get red hot tonight against a guy we never heard of? (Sure seems like Cubs make guys I haven't heard of look great sometimes...but maybe not tonight.)
  2. Is Ted Lilly now our official ace? (I mean he has been pretty steady both in production and emotionally so why not tag him as the "man".)
  3. Why are the Reds so pesky? (It seems like we always have to scratch and claw against them...very aggravating when "on paper" we should destroy them.)
  4. Who do we cheer for Cards or Brewers? (I gotta still want Milwaukee to lose and then we take care of business with the hated Cards....on the other hand the Cards have "Ankiel fueled" momentum that could prove dangerous.)
  5. Whatever happened to that St. Bernard that used to sit in the stands with the old Reds Nazi mama owner?

Question....
was watching Lou's full pre-game press conference on WGN....don't get to see his complete press conf often.   Does he try to sound uninformed/clueless or is he really that clueless?  Lou's a pretty smart guy (and I can't imagine he's that naive) but when asked very predictable and reasonable questions regarding such things like Z's lack of velocity last pm or the dropping of his arm angle again and similar questions, his response is pretty oblvious and responds "don't ask me, that's not my area, I don't know".  C'mon Lou, you aren't on top of all that?

From St. Louis this weekend, no questions asked.  We are facing 4 weak starters...and we're missing Wainright this weekend...gotta capatilize

by LuisSalazar on Aug 15, 2007 8:43 PM CDT up reply actions

Laying out perfectly for us...
if we win 2 of 3 and the Cards sweep, we're in first going into the Cards series.  And if we then take 3 of 4 from the Cards, we knock the Cards back to 5 games behind us, while probably maintaining our lead in the division.

If we're going to win this thing, we have to beat the Cards and Brewers no matter what.  Might as well have the Cards help us get to the division lead along the way.

The trick, of course, is that we actually have to WIN our games.

Whats the protocal on this?
being a Cubs fan naturally I detest the Cards, but recently Joel Pineiro a guy I actually know was traded there, I mean and he's been pretty good to me got me an autograph baseball with everyone from the 116 win Mariner team a couple years back, and basically if ever his team is in the town I'm in i get tickets behind the plate. So is it okay to root for him when he's not playing the Cubs, or should i root for him to pitch well but a bad bullpen outing like a blown save, whats the deal? I mean naturally i want to root for him but i feel grimey doing so as long as he's wearing a cards hat

Wow you guys are ragging Lee
his OBP is 90 points highers than his BA which leads the team, those first two strike were on the corner and the last one tailed back to the plate and was still on the corner, they were by no means fat and to him they probably looked like balls if he had swung at a ball and missed you would still be mad

Nope.
I think this ump has a tight and consistent strike zone.  Just expect a high scoring game as it looks like neither pitcher can get an inside strike called (or low), it seems.

I think this one is going to need a lot of runs.

If I hear one more complaint...
about the pitching I'm gonna go BALLISTIC...

This team (The cubs) are 9th in  runs scored at 543 (pretty sad)....and 2nd in runs allowed at 504.

Meanwhile....the little team written off many times that is poised to take control of the divison this week....they are 11th in runs scored at 517 and 11th in runs allowed at 593....

There is no excuse for this....

This is a direct indictment of Jim Hendry and Lou Pinella.  Or for that matter a direct indictment of the whole organization.....

Unless things revert to June/July form fast...the Cubs have 4+ years of losing to look forward to until the organization MIGHT straighten itself out under new ownership.

Alright DLEE with RISP
Is Second on the team with .358/.445/1.015

The person in front of him interms of BA is Kendall who in 16 games has an BA of .375

The person in front of him in terms of OPS is ARAM who throughout the season has an OPS of 1.035

Not to mention he's coming out of a slump and his numbers are still there.  Additionally, you reference Pujols but Pujols doesn't get those outside strikes called against him due to respect that DLee for one reason or another is not afforded.

by INWes44 on Aug 15, 2007 10:15 PM CDT reply actions

Most of us respect this team, and just because a batter doesn't hit a home run every AB, or a pitcher gives up a 3-run HR doesn't mean we start calling them pieces of cr*p, or pieces of sh*t.  They're good ball players and most of them hustle and really care about what they're doing.

Did we really put Jose Macias on the field? Really???

by ksreed on Aug 15, 2007 11:31 PM CDT up reply actions

Not negative
Just reactionary, idiotic and uninformed.

Some people here are negative from the word go. Some only come out when things are going poorly.

Some people just like to wallow in misery all the time.

I'm not saying everything with the Cubs is seashells and balloons. But it certainly isn't gloom and doom, either.

Why don't you cheer the f'k up? Life is too short to be a douchebag 24/7.

This is what I'm talking about
I commented on your behavior, not your personality.  On what basis do you say I'm a douchebag 24/7?

You can't seriously be saying that you study people, analyze their posting patterns, and only rag on the ones who are consistently negative.  You read a single post, and if it's not positive about the Cubs, you deem the writer to be an idiot and uninformed.

Tell you what, you be more tolerant, and I'll be more cheerful (not that you have any basis to conclude I'm not).

Did we really put Jose Macias on the field? Really???

by ksreed on Aug 15, 2007 11:27 PM CDT up reply actions

No, no, no
How much baseball do you watch? You do know things that happen to the Cubs happen to every team.

I'm not sure some people realize that.

It doesn't have to be a positive post. It just can't be unnecessarily, needlessly negative.

If you want to crap on the bullpen right now, go ahead. But the people who surrender if the Cubs don't score after the first half-inning are moronic to a fault.

by Not Bruce Froemming on Aug 15, 2007 11:31 PM CDT up reply actions

I watch a ton of baseball
and I know very well that bad things happen and are done by all teams, but they "happen" to the Cubs more often than to the Yankees, Red Sox, Tigers and 15 other teams I could name.

I agree that it's stupid to surrender after half an inning, but you don't only respond aggressively to those people.  You seem offended any time anyone takes issue with something the Cubs do.  That's all I'm saying.

Did we really put Jose Macias on the field? Really???

Why
do you need to look at the play while running to first on that. Why? Why, why? Running hard to first is the only task at hand. Looking to your left is not necessary when running straight to a base and then past it. Is there a reason for this? Serious question. I played baseball as a kid and know my share about the game but recognize I could be missing something on this one. Any help? Anyone?

NotBruceFroemming... DON'T READ THIS
Folks, we've seen a summation of the history of the Chicago Cubs franchise over the last couple of weeks. Team plays inspired ball to pull to within 1/2 game of first, even holding first by % points for a day. Fans are excited, players can't wait to get to the ballpark. Then, "stud" player gets hurt and team goes into a 2-7 tailspin.

Why is it other teams see injuries as something that happens, and overcomes them, while it ALWAYS seems like the slightest bit of adversity sends our boys scampering for the nearest bomb shelter needing a change of underwear ?

For once, just ONCE, is it too much to ask that this franchise suck it up, play through it, and beat the DAMN TEAMS THEY SHOULD BE BEATING ?

by scotteboy on Aug 16, 2007 12:05 AM CDT reply actions

In a word, yes.
I completely share your frustration, but stepping back, this team is probably just finding its level.  This squad is a .500 team.  We hae pretty good defense, but a sub-par offense, a sub-par bullpen and an average rotation.  They played lights out for a month, but that was kind of like Fontenot hitting .400 when he first came up.  No way it could last.

This team needs much more than it has to contend, even in this division.

Sorry, Not Bruce.  Hope this didn't send you into apoplexy.

by Not Bruce Froemming on Aug 16, 2007 12:12 AM CDT up reply actions

I said this before the last
Reds series -- I'll say it again. This team (the Reds) is not as bad as their record looks. They've played well over .500 ball since they canned their manager.

Obviously, the damage is done -- they are  about 15-16 games below .500. However, their low point was 20 below. (when Narron was fired) This point was missed by many here.

So, even though the Reds are buried -- they've improved their record, by 5 to 6 games -- because they have played so well since the managerial change.

Hate to say this, but it's the Cubs, Dodgers, and Brewers are the NL teams -- that others are feasting on.

(Rockies won again, beating the Padres in SD. The Padres are close to becoming another NL team that's falling apart. They are playing .500 ball.)

by San Diego Smooth Jazz Man on Aug 16, 2007 12:13 AM CDT up reply actions

The Reds are no pushover
Their biggest problem all season has been their bullpen. And what, the Cubs scored four off it tonight? Normally, that should be enough.

The pitching hasn't been there the last two nights. When the pitching and hitting aren't in sync, it can be awfully frustrating.

by qccub on Aug 16, 2007 12:16 AM CDT up reply actions

Yep
It was fun to watch in July, but this is the inevitable come-down.  You can't win when your outfield doesn't have one legitimate offensive threat; when your bullpen consistently implodes; when you have only two reliable starters.  Very disappointing, but totally forseeable.  And saying so doesn't make you a disloyal fan; it makes you a realist.  It also makes you not Not Bruce, which is a good thing.

I am aware that we are in this race if you look at the standing tomorrow, but nothing about this team appears to be playoff caliber. We have thrown at them our best two pitchers, and the have teed off both nights.

I'm not a sheep
I was devastated in 2003. I'm not sure I'll ever get over it, at least until the Cubs win it all (and they will, someday).

But just because I don't pull out the crying towel every two minutes doesn't mean I'm some sort of Pollyanna.

I want the Cubs to win as much as anybody. But baseball also isn't a seven-game season. And I am NOT going to let what this franchise has done in the past influence how I think it will do today.

I love the Cubs almost as much as I love anyone or anything else. But I also realize that, even if this team doesn't win the division, it's heading in the right direction after two abysmal seasons.

And remember, at the end of the day, it still is only a game.

ride out this slump....I mean at least we are having this happen at a time when the Brewers haven't taken advantage...and we can deal with the Cards by playing them....and our offense scored 14 runs the last two games....6 weeks, who knows...I am starting to believe that if we get all pissed and and ready for the collapse then in some weird way it sends the bad vibes right out there to the team and they play up to our expectations...

by razzpunk on Aug 16, 2007 12:13 AM CDT reply actions

Precisely
If Cubs culture ever is going to change, it has to change completely, in every facet of the game.

I think Lou is well on his way to doing that. I think fans should give it a try, too, and not expect the ceiling to fall in at every hiccup.

This has been a bad stretch, but the last time I checked, this team still is 1.5 games out with 45-50 games to go.

As bad as the Cubs have been playing, it's still far too early to hoist the white flag.

the game tonight and last night showed that the team can score runs at least.....but when Cubsdom starts panic mode I think in some weird way the players catch that vibe and it totally affects them...so just as we shouldn't get so giggly during July we shouldn't jump off a bridge in August....this can be turned around...although I would be delighted if someone threw Michael Wuertz off a bridge...

"White Flag"
You know, that usually means "surrender."

For the Cubs, it means -- "W."

I've always thought this has been backward -- forever.

Why isn't a BLUE flag, with a WHITE "W" the standard-bearer? Just because some guy thought of this idea in 1935, to tell L-riders and people who passed by the park if the Cubs won that day -- it doesn't mean the friggin' concept can't change?

After all, with today's modern media, this quaint tradition is -- well, dated??

Why must the Cubs raise a flag symbolic of the 'universal signal of surrender" -- after -- WINNING????

The only thing
that the Comedy Central is proving -- is that the team who stumbles THE LEAST will win -- and might win with...83 victories, as improbable as that might seem. Well, I guess it's not that improbable, taking a look at the '06 Cardinals.

It's also a possibility that this division's winner will be at .500 or below.

by San Diego Smooth Jazz Man on Aug 16, 2007 12:17 AM CDT reply actions

Not that I remember off hand
but I believe the '73 Mets won at 83-79, and the 05 Padres may have been 84-78. The NL West, if anybody remembers, was dubbed the NL Worst that year.

I remember Padres fans were complaining that it didn't even seem as if the team actually won the division, with that record. The team, (again, from memory) hovered at .500 into the second week of September but put a streak together at the right time to win the division -- and was then quickly dispatched by the Cardinals in the Divisional series.

I don't believe  ANY division has been won at .500 or worse -- but I heard this posibility discussed on ESPN radio today, and it was speculated that this was distinctly possible in the Central this season.

Of course, all 3 individuals that were discussing the topic thought the Cardinals would be the eventual winner. Nobody gave the Brewers a chance -- they gave the Cubs only a "slight" chance.

All of that Cardinal love from the east coast.

I don't get this Cardinals fascination
Their pitching sucks. Their pitching sucks. Oh, and their pitching sucks.

They were 1-5 two weeks ago against two bad teams, the Nats and the Pirates. They went 5-2 last week against two fading teams, the Padres and Dodgers.

This Cardinals team is not the Cardinals team of 2006. I suspect they're going to cool off soon -- like this weekend, perhaps.

by Not Bruce Froemming on Aug 16, 2007 12:26 AM CDT up reply actions

Ugh.
This game had flashes of promise. But so much for that. A few things:
1)Our bullpen sucks. Again.
2)Offense still needs some work.
3)We can't keep doing this. The Brewers aren't going to keep losing forever. This is the time to get serious, if we want to see October.
4)I have a beer buzz, I'm tired, and I'm going to bed. Let's get a W tomorrow. Go Cubs.
Your results may vary.

by riggs on Aug 16, 2007 12:22 AM CDT reply actions

Problems
Agreed on all points but I have no beer buzz. Yes, the bullpen is struggling, but the starting pitching is the much bigger problem. At this writing we have ZERO starting pitchers one could classify as reliable, including Big Z. A great pen can do but so much when they are coming in behind already. That's where the problem with the offense comes in. We still have a good group of hitters, but they are slowly forgetting to work counts and trying to hit homeruns with every swing. That, and with Soriano out and Pie not an every day player we suddenly have NO speed on the basepads. If we can get back to 2-3 reliable starters, get Marmol going, maybe Wood and one other throwing with confidence, and if the big bats can stop trying to break the homerun record all at once, we might just turn this thing around. Man, had Fontenot hit that thing out last night, that would have been huge.

15 Games Below .500
How do we continue to lose to this lousy team?
We scored 5 against their best pitcher and arguably one of the best in the NL -- yet we lost.
Tonight we score 9 against two of the worst pitchers on this arguably one of the worst teams in the NL -- yet we lost.
Why -- our pitching staff once again did not get the job done when it counted.
Yeah -- I know -- Lilly has been pretty consistent all year and our ace Z had a pretty good run but why in the hell can't these guys do the job against this lousy team?
Then we trot in Wuertz who does his right handed impersonation of Ohman and then Howry decides to revert to his early season form and lose another game -- how many is that now for him -- 7 and counting. And don't run through the stats over the past month when he was fairly consistent. When we needed him tonight, he failed -- Wuertz failed -- Lilly failed.
On other days or nights, it is the failure of Eyre, or Dempster, or Hill, or whoever decides to take the night off when we need just one, two, or three outs.
We will win when this bunch can collectively put together a streak of well pitched innnings -- not when they take turns in the crapper.
And please -- get rid of Cedeno who has absolutely no clue what the strike zone is. And get rid of Koy Hill. We can use an extra bat off the bench and a guy who could catch a couple of games a week. If Lou is going to play Kendall at least 5 games a week, what in the hell do we need a non-productive benchwarming catcher for?
Finally -- please tell me what is wrong with D.Lee? I love the guy -- but for the past two weeks he has looked absolutely sick at the plate. Sure he has had a few hits but his entire approach has him looking like JJ during the first 3 months of the season. Does he have some unexplained problem that is being kept a secret? He looks awful -- he is passive or I should say lacks the agressive approach that we all came to love. I just do not understand what is wrong.

Basically, he said the Reds
aren't as bad as some people think or as their record indicates. They have a lot of guys who can bash the ball, and that's exactly what they're doing right now.

He sounded encouraged about the offense. Unfortunately, the pitching wasn't there the last two nights.

The key tonight was Wuertz not holding the lead in the sixth. He absolutely needed to do that. But he's been pretty decent most of the year.

I'm sure Lou would
gladly step down and let you take his place, since you seem to know exactly what buttons to push.

Plus, since you know exactly what kind of an end to the season it's going to be, you might be able to make some extra cash off that future-seeing ability.

See ya
No need for you to watch the rest of this season, then.

See you next year, unless they lose Opening Day, in which case I'm sure you'll be off the bandwagon.

Lets face it...
this team isn't that good. Plain and simple. I didn't think Soriano would hurt that much being out but really, this team is not that good. Fortunately for us, no one in the division is. However the Cubs aren't that good, and they're a dumb baseball team. Seriously Kendall/Howry, how many up in the zone 1-2 fastballs are you going to try and throw by Hamilton before you realize THEY ARE WAY TOO GOOD OF A PITCH TO THROW 1-2, ESPCECIALLY 3 STRAIGHT TIMES! Its incredible! Hamilton just misses one fouling it back, and "What do you say Bob, you think we should go back to the well one more time?" "Sure Jason, lets not throw some offspeed which we just setup by the two high hard ones..." Oh and good job Murton. I know he's been a good stick lately, but THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS A TWO RUN HR leading off the bottom of the 9th, much less any inning. How about some fundamentals. I know people are going to say "Well, he almost got one out yesterday and he's been hot lately." Big deal, being hot doesn't excuse swinging at that pitch leading off the ninth. So he hits it 6,145 feet. Great, you're still losing. Well done. Someone needs to grow a God damn pair and step up.

I can't disagree with much of what you wrote
Maybe this team isn't very good. But it's better than last year's team, better than 2005, and it's got a better shot at winning the division.

May we live in interesting times.

by Not Bruce Froemming on Aug 16, 2007 12:43 AM CDT up reply actions

Absolutely.
First off, my apologies if my spelling resembles a three year old's. i'm just so damn frustrated, like all of you are. I agree its a better team than we've seen in previous years. And I'm not saying we're completley out of the race, but nothing screws a team more than poor fundamentals and stupid play.  I'm not going to sit here and say seasons over and all that because there is plenty of game left, and they are only 1.5 out with a huge series this weekend that I know we can take 3 out of. But (as I'm sure it does all of you) it chaps my rear end when you see dumb baseball. I really think instead of shopping around JJ next time, shop Cedeno. He is repulsive. You would have to throw a baseball to the crust of the Earth for him to think its out of the strike zone. He seriously is a clown. I would rather have Hector Villanueva playing second and hitting bare ass with Gary Scott on his shoulders than see Cedeno in Wrigley with anything but a peg full of cotton candy walking the aisles in his hand.

thank you
this shit is hilarious. Please, more. I'm all for shopping Cedeno, but who's buying? Maybe he could lay off some more pitches with that cotton candy peg in his hand.

I almost crapped
when Ronny stepped to the plate. The stat line under his name said it all - .122 BA, 4 HR, .155 OBP

Like you said - who's buying (let alone needing or wanting) that?

Right on
This post is spot on. When you have a bunch of capable hitters who are suffering from lack of a brain, is that good news because they can presumably grow the brain back? Or would you rather have a bunch of less established and slightly less talented guys with brains? Hmm, seems the D-Backs series is more symbolic than we could have imagined.

by park on Aug 16, 2007 12:54 AM CDT up reply actions

I can't tolerate dumb baseball, either
Bad baseball is at least understandable if you have bad players.

Play entertaining, smart ball, and let the chips fall where they may.

This season, the Cubs have done that about half the time, unfortunately.

by Not Bruce Froemming on Aug 16, 2007 1:05 AM CDT up reply actions

At least the culture has changed/is changing
with Lou Piniella at the helm.

Barrett, Ohlman -- whiners, posers, bad clubhouse guys are gone. Players have to produce -- or sit.
Theriot never had a chance under Dusty, says Bruce Miles.

No more does the manager say 'just bad luck.' after losing. There is responsibility for the losses. Players are held to different standards -- no more pampering.

Even if nothing happens this year, the scene is set for a different future.

Lou gives me hope
that this is the start of a major realignment.

I thought that was going to be the case with Dusty, but I was sorely disappointed, as was (I think) every Cubs fan.

Even if this team doesn't win the division, finishing above .500 would be a big improvement. (But if the division's there for the taking, might as well take it, right?)

What change?

by kcjones on Aug 16, 2007 2:54 AM CDT up reply actions

I'm with you guys
and agree that the team is improved under Lou. He will make more changes last year.

But a "Veteran/Championship caliber" team to just tank so poorly in the most crucial time does not bode well.

The teams with true talent have managed to do it in the NL - Phils and Mets.

Last night was my "Bartman" game redux in that I'm feeling like that was "it". God, I hope I'm wrong. But now I am feeling like this is a 3rd place team at season's end. The Cubs frankly now should be about 4 or 5 games in the lead.

It is hard for an obsessive Cub fan as myself who is not as "rainbows and roses" as some of you - due to having my hopes dashed so many times. As I said, I hope I am wrong - but right now its looking like a 2-5 home stand...to go on top of the crap road trip they just had...in a pennant race.

It is AUGUST, and we're STILL IN IT! YES!

College of Coaches
Why don't we just bring back the College of Coaches? Ones who can handle playoff pressure.  I vote for a faculty of Dusty Baker, Grady Little, John McNamara, Don Zimmer and Lee Elia. Tommy Lasorda can be the pitching coach.

If so, what exactly did Dusty do to "handle the playoff pressure?"  Spark a fat one?

While I have enjoyed Lou here
I can't hep bu think that the last few losses have been because he has decided to stick with struggling arms.

Big Z needed to come out an inning earlier and maybe that 1 run loss is a tie in the 9th

Wuertz needed to be hooked right after hi single after the HR.  I know it is fast but he has to manage like these games are do or die and he I thought his philosophy was don't produce, hit the pine.

MMMMM...Hebrew National

by Kinky Reggae on Aug 16, 2007 7:53 AM CDT reply actions

My son
(he's 12) was pulling his hair out when they came back from commercial and Wuertz was on the mound. I encourage patience and a wait-and-see attitude with him, but ut's getting harder and harder to do that when watching our bullpen.

That said, Wood looked good, no?
