Class Is Now In Session, and Open Thread: Cubs vs. Phillies, Thursday 8/2, 1:20 CT

Just as they did on July 2, 1967, the scoreboard operators at Wrigley Field moved the Cubs' flag to the top of the pole (in part, apparently, because they realized people weren't going to leave until they saw this!) indicating a move into first place (a tie, actually, percentage points ahead), to a loud ovation from the assembled 40,558, who had just witnessed an excruciatingly exciting Cubs win, 5-4 over the Phillies. I know, it's kind of hard to tell which flag is which, because there was absolutely no wind at the time the game ended. But trust me -- that is the Cub flag on top!

So, class, what have we learned over the past two months?

  • That teams that are nine games under .500 can indeed pull themselves back into contention. On June 2, the 22-31 Cubs were 7.5 games behind the Brewers. In fact, three weeks later they were a game worse, 8.5 games out.
  • That teams that start out the season roaring out of the gate (Milwaukee's 24-10 start) don't necessarily keep up that pace, or even "play .500 ball", as many like to do when postulating what a trailing team has to do to catch them. Since that hot start, the Brewers are 34-40, not even .500 over a two and a half month period.
  • Meanwhile, the Cubs are 35-18 since June 2, playing .660 ball over a stretch that's one game short of one-third of a full season. Can they keep it up for a longer sustained period? We do not know this, of course. But who would have guessed they'd even do it this long? The last time the Cubs were 35-18 over any 53-game stretch was July 21-September 12, 1984.
And so, the Cubs inhabit first place for the first time this late in the year since September 28, 2003, the last day of that magical regular season, and are eight games over .500 for the first time since the last day of the not-so-magical 2004 season.

Those in attendance last night saw a wild, wacky and long (three hours, thirty-five minutes, the longest nine-inning game of the season, which began with a throwing error by Rich Hill, leading to an unearned Phillie run, and with everyone in the ballpark on his or her feet, ended with Brett Myers' second wild pitch of the ninth inning, scoring Matt Murton with the winning run.

One thing that became clear as the evening went on -- a tense, tight game like this, punctuated by cheering at inappropriate times (each time the scoreboard operators posted the Mets going ahead of the Brewers, and again when they posted the 8-5 final score, something that usually only happens during Bears games, eliminates virtually all the "drunken idiot" behavior in the bleachers. Every single person was into every single pitch in the last couple of innings, when the Cubs loaded the bases in the 8th and could not score, when Jacque Jones made a great diving catch to start the ninth, then when Ryan Dempster loaded the bases with Phillies and got out of it with a ground ball, and then as Murton's ball popped out of Jayson Werth's glove to lead off the ninth -- every play felt tenser and tenser. Even Cubs security guards stopped and watched the action, as there wasn't any need at those moments for security, since everyone was really living and dying with every pitch.

It was the first time I'd felt a playoff atmosphere for a regular season game at Wrigley Field since the amazing Cardinal series in the first week of September, 2003. And here, we're only in August. It's going to be a heck of a ride the next two months.

Four nice guys from Philadelphia, several wearing Chase Utley T-shirts or jerseys, sat with us last night -- they were insistent that Utley's the "best all-around player in baseball", and there's a good argument that before his injury, he might have been going in that direction. Just as we do for ball-and-strike calls that appear to go against the Cubs, they were agonizingly moaning about calls that went against their team. When we pointed out the plasma screen in the rooftop club across the street, they spent quite a bit of time, as we did, turning around to look at the results of close plays.

I really enjoy sharing a ballgame with passionate and intelligent fans of the opposing team, which these guys were. You can learn a lot about the other team from people who are as into it as we are about the Cubs. I gave them all BCB cards, so if you guys are here, welcome! And as I told one of them as he was leaving, "Go beat those Brewers this weekend!"

We are happy this morning, but there is still much baseball, much excitement, and, we hope, many more victories to come. Onward and let's win this series this afternoon.

 Today's Starting Pitchers
Sean Marshall
 S. Marshall
Cubs
vs. Kyle Lohse
 K. Lohse
Phillies
5-4 W-L 6-12
3.10 ERA 4.58
48 SO 80
22 BB 33
6 HR 16
vs. Phi -- vs. Cubs
Sean Marshall has been consistent all season since his recall and activation on May 23 -- he's had only one really bad start among his twelve, and since the All-Star break he has allowed only four runs in 18 IP (2.00 ERA). He faced the Phillies last September 18 and pitched poorly but the Cubs won the game anyway. Jose Hernandez, who's no longer with Philadelphia, hit a grand slam off Marshall.

Kyle Lohse, once in the Cub farm system (he was traded to Minnesota in the Rick Aguilera deal on May 21, 1999), was acquired by the Phillies at the trading deadline. He's already faced the Cubs twice this season, most impressively on April 15 at Wrigley Field, throwing 8 innings of shutout ball and striking out twelve. But these Cubs aren't those Cubs; Alfonso Soriano is 11-for-27 (.407) lifetime vs. Lohse with 2 HR, Mark DeRosa is .545/.615/.818 (6-for-11, 1 HR), and Lohse has never retired Aramis Ramirez (5-for-5, two doubles, a HR, 3 RBI, and probably the reason Aramis sat last night except to pinch-hit, and he seemed to not want to even be out there, swinging at the first pitch he saw, so he could play today's day game).

Today's game is on WGN and at the Mediacenter.

Great recap Al!
I got goosebumps while reading your recap!  This is certainly the next best thing to being at the game.  Thanks!

Another key to the trade deadline...
is Eyre.  One of the things people were clamoring for was a LH reliever.  Well, if Eyre can pitch like he had the last couple of years as opposed to the first few months this year, we'd have our LH reliever.

Eyre and Wood are big X-factors down the stretch.  If Eyre regains his form and Wood stays healthy and effective, that's a HUGE boost to the back of the bullpen.

Granted, those are big "ifs" but they should be up for discussion.  Especially considering that Eyre hasn't allowed a run in his last 7 outings, and that Wood is due to join the team this weekend.

Nice to see you hanging with other fans, Al
Just so long as they aren't Cardinal fans.

BETTER DEAD THAN RED!

But guys, Pinella is right. We have to take it slow.

First place is wonderful. I'm going to have a great time with the Cardinal jerks in my office today (especially after they got whacked by the Pittsburgh Matt Morrises.)

But even if we lose today and the Brewers win, and the flags have to be changed again, that doesn't mean we need to burn the place down.

Still a long way to go. The division lead and the wild card lead could change hands six or seven times yet.

Sorry to be a contrarian
As I posted late last night, I'd like to see Wood and Prior stay as far away from this team as possible.

Bad karma, bad memories. These two will never pitch consistently and successfully in MLB again.

Baseball is a business -- and so far, those indivduals have turned out to be bad business deals, money that could have gone to healthy, uniformed actually playing players.

Move on, people, please.

by San Diego Smooth Jazz Man on Aug 2, 2007 1:21 PM CDT up reply actions

As I've said before
Wood deserves this final shot. You want to talk bad business? How about Kerry Wood leaving millions of dollars on the table to sign a one year, $1.75 mil contract with the Cubs? This guy has always been loyal to Chicago. I can't wait to see him return and get one last chance. His ovation will be extraordinary, and rightly so.
For your information, the Supreme Court has roundly rejected prior restraint.

Phillie Fan
I sit is section 434 and there was this phillie fan screaming, "Cubs Suck!" on Tuesday night. He would stand wave his arms around turn to face the crowd and yell. He did this for about three innings as we were returning his insults. It was actually all in good fun until he wouldn't sit down, people were getting very upset that he was in there way. The girl sitting next to him took his Phillie hat and told him to sit down, he proceeded to give here the double finger. The hat went over the railing into the lower deck the whole section erupted into cheers and the drunken Phillie fan was finally told to sit by security, after his refusal he was ejected. My first time witnessing an ejection at Wrigley and I go to at least 25 games a year.

Rich Hill
He really needs to get it together. His strikeouts of Howard and Rowand shows that he's got great stuff.

But when something bad happens (by his fault or otherwise), he looks like a kid whose been caught with his hand in the cookie jar.

At 27(?), he should have enough confidence in his stuff to simply concentrate on the batter in the box. Potential meltdowns can shake the confidence of the team. He simply needs to believe in himslef more. That, or have the catcher go out after every pitch and tell him how great he is.

It was a great game to be at
Even though I essentially had to buy two tickets to get in (I was supposed to have a ticket waiting at will-call from an alumni association, but they could not find it, and I couldn't get in touch with anyone in charge that could help figure out what happened to it).  So I just bought a single game ticket on the street at a deflated rate - it was already into the 2nd after trying in vain to figure out where my "real" ticket was - and met up with my friends.

One of them is a Phillies fan - we had a great time going back and forth during the game, each of us trying to reverse jinx our own players by insulting them or predicting a bad result every at-bat.

But the quality of the game itself was what got to me.  It has been a while since I've seen this at Wrigley - a tense, meaningful close game between two really good teams.  And staying to watch them change the flags was a great feeling.

There were a lot of groans
about he lineup last night, especially the 5-8 spots.  Even Piniella sounded impatient on the pre-game, saying Murton really needed to start hitting, like, now.

All those guys at the bottom, including the 9-hole, wound up contributing to this win offensively.

Lou has to mix up the line-up against softball throwing lefty's..Cubs have lost only 10 games in last 35, 6 of those losses are against left handed starters.  After moving Sori to 5th, he had to mix it up somehow..I trust Lou, he knows his team

1st post!!!
Well, actually, I posted last night, but it was lost in the euphoria of a BIG W!

Couple things:

1. Sounds like you experienced a diamond in the rough with those Phillies fans last night, Al.  I was at the May 12th debacle in Philly (12 run, rain delayed 7th inning...) and witnessed some pretty awful Philly fanatacism, including two (for lack of a better word) bitches that we actually witnessed conspiring to get a Cubs fan kicked out for simply cheering for the Cubs...and they succeeded!!! It was weird.

That being said, out of control drunk assholes are pretty much the same in any ballpark (well, except for Yankee Stadium, where they are just ALL assholes).

2. I am a Cubs fan stuck in NYC, far away from Wrigley, where I long to be!  I am looking for a good bar to watch the upcoming Cubs/Mets series.  While I have found a handful of Bears bars (the best being Josie Woods Pub...love that place) I haven't really found any Cubs friendly bars.  I heard maybe "Standings" in the East Village?

Any NYC Cubs fans out there?  Any tips?

As of now...
it would almost have to be Marshall.  He's been so consistent.  My only concern with Marshall is that he's averaging less than 6 innings per start.  I'd like to see him be able to go deeper in a start. On the other side, he's never had a huge workload before.  I'm hoping that fatigue doesn't set in down the stretch.

by SouthernCub on Aug 2, 2007 10:11 AM CDT up reply actions

If we get
Marshall in there, and Rich in the 'pen, that should do just fine.  Marshall can give at least 5, maybe 6 and has been consistent.  While you don't want your starters to go only 5, if you've got a starter in the 'pen who hasn't been that bad, you should be alright.

Jones and Hustle
What I've been most impressed with Jones is his ability to transform his game.  He does hustle on every play, even routine ground balls, and I appreciate that.  But he has practically given up trying to hit homeruns anymore.  He's realized that all he does is strike out when he tries to hit the ball over the fence, so he's turned himself into a slap hitter.  Whatever it takes Jaque, go get-em!

Most definitely...
Rich Hill will continue to get starts.  I dont think they are going to ditch him because of a few bad outings.

They are pretty committed to him and i know last year they were always working with him on his mechanics, because that is where it basically starts with him.

by HIGGY on Aug 2, 2007 10:28 AM CDT up reply actions

Thanks, HIGGY
I would think that in-game experience will be the only thing that will help him improve. Would you agree?

The one thing I see from him on his "good" nights is pinpoint control, and in lieu of velocity, tremendous varience of speeds.

I laughed when Len mentioned Jamie Moyer's fastball clocked in at 80mph - but he sure knows how to pitch. Except we got the better of the MOYERNATOR last night.

It is AUGUST, and we're STILL IN IT! YES!

by TheEman on Aug 2, 2007 10:32 AM CDT up reply actions

In game experience....
can definitely assist him, but it goes back to a confidence issue, same for most of our starting pitchers.

Trusting your stuff and doing what you know you can do is the key.  Dont try to be  hero or make that special pitch.

Something that really impressed me last year was Sean Marshall and his daily approach to every game.  I remember one day i came in, it was after his one hitter, and i said hey Sean nice game...he said thank you but i walked too many guys.  Not sure the of exact stat, but my respect level went up for him.  He is always trying to get better.

How much Muskat sucks
In her recent article about Kerry Wood, she claimed that he helped the 1998 Cubs to win the division.  IIRC, and I do...the Cubs won the Wild Card, not the division (playoff game vs. the giants).  It's pathetic that a staff writer for the Cubs can get something like that wrong.

You recall correctly...
perhaps she got it confused with the 2003 season, when he actually did help the team win the division?  Either way, that's some really poor journalism.

I was only

Torn about the return of K. Wood
On one hand he has worked hard to get back to the show and deserves the chance. He has been one of the faces of the franchise. If he comes back strong and does what we all know he can do, then it'll solidify this team even more then I thought was possible.

On the other hand he could get in the game and hurt himself again, which would end his career or at least his season for good. Something I do not wish to see happen to anyone.

We, as Cub fans, have waited for K. Wood to come back for good to contribute to the team in anyway, not just as a starter.

I will be watching, getting chills like everyone else, but it'll have an undertone of caution until he gets his legs and shows his problems are really over.

Few Things
One thing that I have always noticed about JJ is that he LOVES to play the game.  If someone gets an RBI double and they show the bench, JJ is the most happy one and he ususally does that finger point thing.  and if JJ himself gets a big hit he grins like a little kid. and if they cubs win like last night, he just around and seems to want the win more than anyone, and i LOVE that.  that makes up for some errors he might make.  Im sure its great for team chemistry.

And i'm glad that Lou played ronnie, and Murt.  We WILL need them if we are to make the playoffs, whether to fill in for an injury, or for a cluthc pinch-hit.  We need to start integrating them into the lineup and give them some AB so they will be ready.

Wood will replace a pitcher, not a position player.  If Fontenot were to be sent down, it would be for another position player.  That said, I don't see Fontenot getting sent down.

Do you have inside info?
Lou has said that if the starters continue to struggle he may be forced to bring up a 13th pitcher.  Are you saying he's lying?

by cubsbak on Aug 2, 2007 12:44 PM CDT up reply actions

No, not saying he's lying...
I hadn't read/heard Lou say anything like that.  Even if he has said what you said, I suspect it was in a moment of anger, and that he wouldn't really do that.  Sometimes people say things that, when they really think about it, they don't really mean.  Do you think Lou has never said something he didn't mean?

I was merely speculating (as anyone on this board does) based on the fact that nobody in baseball goes with a 13-man pitching staff.  That's all.

Ah, well
here's the article.  I think Sweet Lou might do it at least for a little while.  It may depend upon how long Marshall lasts today.  He did carry 3 catchers at one point, which was also unorthodox.

just a few pointers
Do insult or chagrin the contributions of even a role player like Fontenot, it is disrespectful to the game itself and shows so much ignorance about the game but what is considered one of the most knowledgable fan bases...

Fontenot is not stealing any time away from DeRosa or Patterson, he is contributing in the role he is being asked.

Now regarding E-Patterson, he is playing OF and has been playing outfield for some time as the Cubs and Patterson have come to realize his defense is unacceptable for MLB except maybe for a spot utility role. Patterson is competing with Pie and Coats for the a spot in September call up and possibly competing for the CF platoon role next year or a 4th-5th OF-IF like Bynum. He could be a valuable role player next year if the Cubs go younger without Floyd & Ward.

Fontenot has done well in his role, although the last ten games he is batting .178 (5-28), the month of July he is batting .211 (15-71) after a celebrated June where he batted .397.

I am guessing but I think Lou is going to move Fontenot down to AAA and bring up Wood as a 13th pitcher allowing the 27 year old to get some regular playing time in AAA and be ready for a late August call up when the club is putting together the final 25.

Projecting near Aug 31, look for competition between Cedeno, Fontenot, Murton, Pagan, K Hill with the prospects of Ward and Blanco coming back and in the bullpen determining Wood against Cherry/Petrick/Gallagher/Guzman?

BUT no one is stealing time unless you have E-Pat on some fantasy roster.

Milw-09-24-98--Brown in for defense--bases loaded--flyball--HE DROPPED THE BALL!!!NO NO NO, cubs lose 8-7

by Ivy Walls on Aug 2, 2007 12:45 PM CDT up reply actions

wait what?
how was i disrespecting fontenot?  i was making the observation that he has been struggling mightily.  I loved him when he was hot, and i have nothing against the guy, and think hes a better ball player than what he has been showing lately, i just dont think right now his game is good enough for the majors the way he has been playing lately.

His OPS is .496 in the last month...i dont even think neifi could manage to be that bad.

If the cubs season stays as magical as it has been, fontenot will always be remembered for his incredible stretch that played a huge role in our revival.  I have nothing against the guy, but if you cant manage an ops close to .600 for a month, you need to be sent down.

And how is he NOT stealing playting time away from derosa?  If fontenot were down, and say Pie up, derosa would be in the lineup.  simply, he is taking at bats away from our #3 RBI guy.  And last night, took at bats away from our best player.

Fontenot, I like your style and your hustle, but i think you need to get regular at bats in Iowa before a september callup to the bigs for our playoff push.

Big Z on Cuban: "Plus, I can be signed by him. You know, I know he has the money for me. Hopefully he can buy the Cubs."

by kylejo on Aug 2, 2007 1:13 PM CDT up reply actions

Sending players down
I think you misunderstand the purpose of sending a guy from the bigs to the minors.  Sending Fontenot down would be a mistake.  How would hitting off of AAA quality pitching every day help you hit big league pitching every day?  It wouldn't.  It would be counter productive.

You send a guy down to get regular playing time.  If a guy is at the end of the bench, and not seeing any playing time in the pros, then there is some benefit to letting him play every day in AAA.  It is better than just taking BP in the bigs.

Fontenot does not have that problem.  He is playing a lot.  The solution for him, I think, is to give him some time off.  A few days off like Theriot got, to stop and think and work on your swing without the pressure of that night's game.

By the way, Theriot had .548 OPS for the month of June.  Thank goodness, we didn't give up on him and send him to the minors.  We got a .920 OPS from him in July!

by californiachicagoan on Aug 2, 2007 3:21 PM CDT up reply actions

Pagan
Hey, don't include Pagan in that list.  He is a solid 4th outfielder.  He can play all three outfield spots.  He has hit decently with a .275/.320/.470 line.  He hits righties and lefties equally, so does not need to be platooned for, or conversely he can platoon for anyone who does have a real weakside.  He hasn't had any prolonged cold streaks all year.  There will be NO sending Pagan to the minors.

by californiachicagoan on Aug 2, 2007 3:10 PM CDT up reply actions

Stealing?
It's called a day off.  Ramirez didn't sit on the bench so Fontenot could play.  And DeRosa is not sitting so Fontenot could play.  LouPa likes to keep his players fresh, which makes complete sense, especially when it is 95 degrees out.

Fontenot is a great guy to have on the bench because he is capable of stepping and playing.

I like the fact that Lou is giving Fontenot a start. Get him some ABs maybe build his confidence a little.
You're right Gary, having DeRo on the bench for PH is a nice option to have.

I haven't given up on Fontenot either. IIRC, he got a big RBI hit on Tuesday night. Plus it seems like he and Theriot trade off hot streaks. They're kinda like each other's insurance policy.

I just love all our players and always want to see them play.  Players like Theriot, DeRo, Rami, Lee, Sori, Fonte (although slumping lately), Pie (when he gets called back up) and Kendall/Hill

That would be my starting lineup, using the others to give rest when needed

Raising of the flags...
Was at the game last night and Al, you're so right about the playoff atmosphere. My wife turned to me in the seventh inning and said, "it feels like it did during the playoffs in '03"  and she was right. There was just an electricity circulating throughout the stadium. Every pitch had a little more importance than a "normal" game.

When the Cubs had won and the flags started coming down, the "W" flag was raised, but people didn't want to leave - they were waiting for more. The NL central pole was lowered along with the American flag which was just poking out from behind the scoreboard, so you knew that the Cubs flag was being placed on top.

When it was raised, I got chills...it was so cool...

Maybe my memory is short
but it seems like what makes this team different than 2003, 1989 and 1984 is the number of people who are contributing.  In those prior years, we had a set line up of guys who played pretty much every day and got the job done.  This year, it's like a core group of 4 (Lee, Ramirez, Soriano and DeRosa) supported by a rotating cast of others that extends down to Iowa.  It's obviously working, and it adds an intersting dimension to the season.  I just hope we can keep it going.

A story in the trib about John Canning and his assembly of suits to own the Cubs.  It goes on and on about how friendly he is with Selig which evidently is the main concern for ownership.  I think knowing Selig should disqualify someone for ownership.  Plus, Canning owns 11% of Brewers which he should have to sell to own another team.

If Pie's not the answer...
...don't count on Torii Hunter in center for next year.

Here's an excerpt from an interview with Torii Hunter (St. Paul Pioneer Press - http://www.twincities.com/sansevere/ci_6521212).  Interesting observation about Wrigley Field from a player's perspective.  Bums me out 'cause I'd love to see him here, but increases my respect for him for the way he approaches the game.

BS: Does that mean you wouldn't want to play in Boston?

TH: It's not the racial slurs. The only thing is the Green Monster. Me? I like to catch the ball and hit the wall. I catch the ball and hit the wall there, I die. (Laughs.) You go to your right, and it's on you like, bam. And you go to your left, and there's a corner there where I broke my ankle. It has nothing to do with those slurs, those little comments they have in the outfield. It has a lot to do with the wall. I hit it and it shakes my insides. I have a no-trade clause for five teams. Boston and the Chicago Cubs are two of them. The Cubs are on the list because there's concrete behind the ivy. I love the Cubs. I'd still consider playing for Boston because they've got a chance to win.

re: If Pie's not the answer...
Yeah, so much for Torii Hunter. But he kinda contradicts himself, doesn't he?

First he says he has a no-trade clause for Boston, then he says he'd still go there because the Red Sox have a chance to win. So is he implying the Cubs don't have a chance to win? And yet he loves the Cubs?

they have a better offense, deeper rotation, and a better bullpen.  They ahve the best record in baseball.  They're pretty close to a lock (obvioulsy nothing is guaranteed, but they're way out in front).

Based on his comments, I'd say Boston would clearly be a more preferred destination than Chicago for him.  While the walls are challenging in Boston, they're nothing like Wrigley.  And Boston has a better team.

Interesting that while "Woody'' has been around team and at Wrigley several times this season as he rehabbed and now permanently (we hope), no sign of Mark Prior.

He's earning $3 M-plus and I realize his circumstances are totally different--no chance of coming back this year after surgery, lives in Calif?? I think--but wouldn't you think he'd be there at some point to support his "teammates'' especially Woody and down the stretch drive?

To me, if we don't see Prior all season, it just confirms what was hinted at after he had to go under the knife--he won't ever pitch for Cubs again.

Looked like a replay of Hill the other day.  Slow, slow stuff.  Seemed like he and Hill only have one pitch, the big breaking curve.  I guess you can't be on everyday.

The game's still not out of reach.

70's night might have been a couple of days ago, but today is the true 70s day. Reference has already been made to the 1979 slugfest with the Phils.

If you think today is over, don't go away. This game has all the earmarks of so many of the games I saw a a 60s kid and a 70s teen. Balls flying everywhere. Terrible Cubs pitching combined with decent hitting produced games like this all the time.

In fact, the so-called 'myth' of Wrigley as a hitter's park grew during this period, as the wind was always blowing out. Always.

That doesn't seem to be the case anymore, for reasons unknown. Nevertheless, this is throwback baseball today. Do not be surprised if double-digit numbers are thrown up today on both sides.

nope
pitching hasnt been the problem throughout the year

by DartmouthCubsFan on Aug 2, 2007 3:00 PM CDT up reply actions

I don't think so.
Marquis is unreliable, Rich Hill has been breaking apart lately. So if you consider today's thrashing of Marshall as an oddity then we at least need one more decent starter.

Our bull pen is getting extremely over worked because of our SP's inability to go long and it cannot continue.

by cubsnlinux on Aug 2, 2007 3:03 PM CDT up reply actions

look
Hill's struggles of late have been minimal in 60% of the starts this year he's allowed less than 3 ER's, he's fine. He's just hit a bump in the road

Marshall and Marquis regressions were to be expected they were pitching way over their heads.

Internally will Gallagher be the next call-up if Marshall/Hill continue to struggle as they have this week?

Don't know how many 2-3-4 inning outings we can take...Cherry decent in relief today but when he goes down and one-inning Woody returns, we'll be short in the pen if this keeps up.

If go to 13-man staff as Lou suggested might happen, what regular goes down?? Murton again? Fontenot?? think we need Cedeno as INF backup and he's shown some spark at plate.

Yeah right
pull your starter in the 2nd less than a day after your bullpen went 4 innings.  The reason you say Marshall had "no chance" of being effective is you know the result.  This hindsight business really gets old.

by cubsbak on Aug 2, 2007 3:18 PM CDT up reply actions

Were you watching the first two innings on TV?
I generally agree with your premise-- keep the starter in as long as you can, especially after a lot of bullpen work the previous night-- but Marshall had absolutely nothing today.

How can there be something wrong
When the team is playing the best ball in the NL?
I think some younger fans here have been thrown by the 'roid era.

I'd rather see 15 Cubs singles and continued winning than 3 Solo HR's...more runners, more runs.

The dependence on the 3-run HR hasn't helped this team in the last 50 years, has it? Sammy Sosa's bombs -- meant nothing. Perhaps they were entertainment, but it meant nothing, overall.

The HRs come when you are not pressured to hit them. The terriffic situational hitting displayed in Mesa came back in June. I'll take it.

And, I'll take the current standing as 'the best team in the NL' since June.

The only thing that is problemmatic with zero home runs is that with large gaps in leads, and few innings to make them up (7th inning on...) a team runs out of time and the odds increase expoentially for the leading team to close out a W.

Two guys we counted on to provide some power are really struggling to hit home runs.  I thought Floyd would hit at least 20, seemed like he hit that many against us before he became a Cub.  Jones with two home runs.  Six between them.  Wouldn't it be great if they both busted out in August in September?  They could both carry this club to the playoffs!

Seriously, his numbers in the clutch this year are very solid.

by ksreed on Aug 2, 2007 4:49 PM CDT up reply actions

Very
common impression.  My coworker, a Cardinals fan, just asked me what was wrong with Lee this morning.  I showed him the stats and he was amazed.

I think it is expectations.  Lee has been so good in the last couple of years, everyone expects him to do something with the ball every other at bat.

even hitting .333 means that is just not going to happen.

On top of that, you're suggesting that he start pressing in clutch ABs, which will ultimately backfire. The guy's a hit machine, how's about you stop complaining.

bunt attempt
Nunez popped up on a bunt right in front of the mound and just stood there in the box looking at it. Ohman caught it when he could have let it fall and had an easy double play.

And as I speak this piece of garbage lets the game get out of hand. I hate Will Ohman. Why is he even in the game?

We are all alone in first place with a .5 game lead.

Home runs are great
But trying to hit home runs is not.  Looking at the all the NL teams scoring as much as us, they rank #2, #5, #12, and #15 in homeruns.  There are 6 NL teams with less runs scored, but more homeruns.

Our O is a doubles hitting, put the ball in play, but don't get doubled off (until today) kinda team.  It is a nice change of pace to the home run hitting, strikeout machine we used to be.

by californiachicagoan on Aug 2, 2007 4:44 PM CDT reply actions

why is ohman being left out there
its a string of 4 righties in a row....

we work all the way back into this game and lou doesnt want to overextend one of our big relievers for 2/3 of an inning?

this was a really poorly managed top half
there's no reason ohman should've been left in there after the Coste 1B, 4 righties in a row that all have massive splits against LH pitching in their careers...

2/3 of an inning is all that was needed from one of the other guys

Z is pitching tomorrow, he can be ridden

You can't throw Howry or
Dempster out there.  At some point, you just have to say this was one of those 40 games in the season you are going to lose.

No way you put another arm out there in the 9th.

Ohman only gets lefties out.  What is so tough to understand about that?  Sending him up against 6 straight righties (2 being switch hitters) is suicidal.

You know that look on his face after he screws up. Corey Patterson used to do the same thing, purely for the cameras and the fans, just like Ohman does.

Fly balls....
What is happening in the outfield today is the reason the Cubs MUST play more night games.  Since the team is restricted to a certain amount of night games due to the nieghborhood, the only way to increase the number of night games is to build a brand new stadium.  It could another 10-15 more wins per year.

I love wrigley...but it handicaps us no doubt.  talked about ehre a couple months ago...steve stone pointed how wrigley plays like 4 parks...how is a team supposed to be built for that?

nonetheless the cubs are persevering, and today is just a small hiccup...shouldn't be too much of a downer considering the valiant effort to stage a comeback

by cubsirishkillme on Aug 2, 2007 4:55 PM CDT up reply actions

High baseball IQ
I completely agree that the park plays very different on different days.  That just means you need a deeper team, with a smart coach who knows who to play when.  Luckily we got both of those right now.

Either that, or you need your every day players (and pitchers) to have high baseball IQs, and be able to adjust as situations warrant.  That would be fine too.

by californiachicagoan on Aug 2, 2007 5:02 PM CDT up reply actions

Bull
Conditions are the same for both teams.  In fact, strange quirks in a field can help the home team if they can build their roster accordingly.

by californiachicagoan on Aug 2, 2007 4:58 PM CDT up reply actions

Yeah, but.....
The Cubs play all their home games at Wrigley.  The other teams are there maybe 6-9 times/year.

My conclusions...
1)Bullpen looked good, for the most part.
2)We kept in it 'till the end.
3)Will Ohman needs to be taken out back and beaten with a sock full of nickels.
4)At least we're still in 1st place.
5)Let's regroup, and go beat the Mets!

Throw in
there has to be a better option out there than Koyie Hill.

by BringBackRyno on Aug 2, 2007 5:01 PM CDT up reply actions

Koyie Hill will soon be replaced
by Hank White, assuming his rehab goes well, so let's hope a .240 hitting Blanco returns to the Cubs.

That would be a vast improvement.  He never had a high average but seemed to be a good clutch player who had good "d" and keeps runners honest.

Rough day for Marshall
...his struggles set the tone for the entire day. Split about to be expected from two fairly evenly matched teams.

Get Mets 2 of 3 and get to some places cooler like Hou (dome) and Colo...might help our pitchers who looked a little spent last 2 nights.

Woody's return should provide a big boost who goes down?? Cherry after today's (prolonged) outing?

by dynasty on Aug 2, 2007 5:09 PM CDT reply actions

I missed the end of the game...
...but I'd already made peace with the idea of a loss here. It's cool to see the Cubs made it back to a one-run game -- at least for a little while.

Hey, the offense put together six runs and the bullpen did OK for the most part (except for Ohman, it seems). A quality start could have won this one.

Ah, well. Splitting with the Phils is nothing to be ashamed of.

Why can't Lou recognize Ohman's issues
What i like about Lou is his ability to see quickly what kills the Cubs. For example, Eyre blew some games in May and he STOPPED putting him in situations that could kills us.

He has got to start doing this with Ohman. It just seems to me that leaving Ohman in against righties KILLS us everytime.

I was really hoping we could come back and being down 1 in the 9th is a lot different then being down 4.
