Around SBN: Explaining Jeremy Lin's Early, Surprising Success

Open Thread: Cubs vs. Giants, Wednesday 8/22, 9:15 CT

SAN FRANCISCO -- Remember all the times everyone said Rich Hill's curveball, at times, resembled that of Barry Zito?

Well, tonight the two curveballing lefthanders will face each other for the first time.

See below the pitcher box for more on Zito and Hill, but I wanted to point out that last night's game was the third time that the Cubs have come from behind and won a game in the ninth inning (the others: May 6 vs. Washington and the Aramis Ramirez walkoff HR on June 29.)

Most teams don't win very many such games -- three of them, with a little less than a quarter of the season left, seems to me to be a significant number, showing the resilience of this team. Keep up the good work!

Spent the afternoon taking the ferry to Sausalito, having lunch, then returning for tonight's game.

 Today's Starting Pitchers
Rich Hill
 R. Hill
Cubs
vs. Barry Zito
 B. Zito
Giants
7-7 W-L 9-11
3.93 ERA 4.88
135 SO 100
50 BB 68
24 HR 19
vs. SF -- vs. Cubs
Both of these pitchers have fared well against today's opponent. Hill beat the Giants at Wrigley Field on July 16 and then didn't win another game till last Friday. Zito beat the Cubs the next day, July 17, the only game SF won in that series, striking out eight and walking none. No one presently on the Cubs has hit him particularly well, although Derrek Lee and Cliff Floyd have both homered off him, as has Mark DeRosa (twice, but he has only two other hits in 23 career AB, although has also walked six times).

I neglected to mention yesterday our SB Nation friends over at McCovey Chronicles. Oddly, a lot of their threads don't seem to have to do with current Giants events. Can't imagine why.

Today's game is on WGN. If you don't have access to WGN, try the Mediacenter.

I forgot to add my comments...
regarding Musk-Ox's quote. Soriano CAN'T "do everything a leadoff hitter can do" when he's 100% healthy...work the count, make contact with 2 strikes, etc. So what makes "The Cubs" think he's going to be able to do it when he comes back?
As I've told you before, I never repeat myself.

where is that written?
Where does it say that a leadoff hitter has to work the count or make contact with two strikes or any of that?  Cause I looked it up, and I can't find it anywhere.

Can you then..
enlighten me in the finer points of what a leadoff hitter is supposed to be able to do? Please quote your sources since we're going to go "by the book" here.

by santoswoodenlegs on Aug 22, 2007 6:40 PM CDT up reply actions

It took me 5 seconds....
"The first player in the batting order is known as the leadoff hitter. Generally the leadoff batter is the fastest baserunner on the team; because he bats more often than anyone else in the lineup, and in order to have baserunners when the later hitters with more power come to bat, his need for a high on base percentage (OBP) exceeds that of the other lineup spots. It is also considered disadvantageous to have a faster player behind a slower if they are on consecutive bases, particularly first and second base. Once on base, his main goal is to advance around the bases as quickly as possible and then to score. Because leadoff hitters are selected primarily for their ability to reach base and for their speed, they are not typically power hitters. Another important role for the leadoff man is to reveal the pitcher's ability and to "wear him out" by forcing him to throw as many pitches as possible."

Pay attention to the last 2 sentences.

AND...
"He should be a player who's not afraid to see a significant number of pitches, and to (be able) hit with two strikes on him," said Tracy. "Even if he makes out, when he comes back to the dugout he can pass on accumulated information about the pitches he's seen.

Hey Al
What about the June 25th game against Colorado in which the Cubs came from behind in the bottom of the 9th to win 10-9? Perhaps one of the more defining games of the year IMO.

by giddyup on Aug 22, 2007 6:25 PM CDT reply actions

Yabbut....
... in that game, the Cubs LED going into the 9th inning, blew the lead, then came back to win.

The stat I quoted was just for games where they were TRAILING after 8 innings.

They still
came from behind to win in the 9th inning.

by giddyup on Aug 22, 2007 6:35 PM CDT up reply actions

Yes, I know that.
Let me repeat this: the stat I quoted was ONLY for games in which the Cubs TRAILED after eight innings.

It would
have been less confusing if that would have been stated originally. A comeback win in the 9th is a comeback win in the 9th. It doesn't matter when the lead was lost.

Sorry...

by santoswoodenlegs on Aug 22, 2007 6:38 PM CDT up reply actions

Um...
... not necessarily. Trailing after 8 is NOT the same as "trailing in any inning after the 8th".

a run for their money.

On a related note, a score like this is going to do nothing to quell rumors that the Rangers steal signs in that ballpark.

Moreover,
Buerhle's gotten shelled there a couple times in the past few years and he always goes to the stealing signs line, which to me is just ridiculous, especially since Texas is capable of blowing people out on the road, as well, as today showed. SOOOOOOOOOOOOOO, it was goofing on Buerhle's line. However, if you don't take in a lot of White Sox baseball, there was no way you would've gotten, but thanks so much for your criticism of my attempt at humor. It was totally germane and much needed.

First game was just insane, although it was obvious Trembley was trying to save his pen for the second game.  It was very Dusty-like, with nary a peep from the dugout until a guy had given up, say, seven runs.

While the Cubs do not
really hit lefties well, perhaps Kendall can give them siome further insight into the guy. I know he was traded here the day Zito started against the Cubs and Zito still did well that day, so spare me the reprimand, rush-to-correct-everyone crowd. My thinking is, that with the extra time to prepare this time and the added luxury of having a guy on the team who actually caught Zito, perhaps the Cubs have a bit of an advantage and might be able to get to Zito, who hasn't exactly been impervious this year.

Players give scouting reports
All the time. It's part of the game. In fact, if Kendall refused to say anything about Zito, I would question whether the Cubs should keep him around.

You don't think Barrett isn't trying to impart his limited wisdom to Padre hitters?

I guarantee you that Maddux has shared every piece of information he knows with the Padres.

by lancaster99 on Aug 22, 2007 7:57 PM CDT up reply actions

Kendall's first few hours
were spent getting to know his own staff, I'm sure. My guess is the Cubs will be better prepared to handle Zito tonight. And no matter how you scout a guy, a guy who caught Zito and called games for him will be a much better scout than a guy guessing as to what was going on from the stands. I am sure that Kendall and Zito talked strategy often. I don't think Zito talked strategy with Cub scouts.
Prince Fielder...he is neither.

Lefties
I suppose, but we have still have two lefties in there who generally have not hit lefties well, although Jacque does have a decent line against them this season, albeit in a small sample.  I know we're dealing with some injuries but that still seems like a weak outfield to throw out there against Zito.  I know Floyd got the big hit yesterday (which was only a hit because of the drawn in infield) and that Murton has been struggling a bit, but I would still much rather see the redhead out there tonight. If he doesn't play against lefties when is he going to play?

Damn it Len K
makes me feel old. It's obvious he has never been in Candlestick (Monster) Park.

He asks Len: What's Radiant Heating?"

Well, that was a 'heating system' that apparently involved heating coils embedded in the cement stands of Candelstick Park. Therefore, the concrete -- would feel warm. Keeping your feet warm, would keep ALL of you warm.

I have no idea if this system ever worked, (probably not, but I remember reading about it) but how could it possibly help when the wind was blowing in at about 20mph and the temperature at Candelstick Point was about 55. Your beer would get colder there, in the summer. Wind Chills were the norm there.

However, when I was there for the 1989 NLCS, it was beautiful....Sunny, warm, not a cloud to be found.

Except for the one that hung over the Cubs.

Great job by Hank, and he looked like a deer in headlights on the grounder but give him credit. Fontenot drew the walk, and did his job in the squeeze perfectly. Didn't leave too soon, but got a great jump.

by cubrandy on Aug 22, 2007 11:56 PM CDT reply actions

I like Bruce Bochy a lot
But he has crap to deal with in SF. He pulled rabbits out of a hat in SD. It took me a while to really like the guy's work -- he's quiet. In fact, he was the only thing about the Padres I enjoyed.

But the cheap bastards wouldn't give him any cash -- why spend 10+ years and  still be the lowest paid manager in baseball?

I'd take the headaches to finace my future.

by San Diego Smooth Jazz Man on Aug 22, 2007 11:56 PM CDT reply actions

agree...he knew
he would have to deal with all the Bonds BS and a team full of players his own age this year.

Sabean will rebuild around three really good pitchers next year.

Let me get back to you, will ya, Charlie? I got a guy on the other line asking about some white walls.

by JB 23 on Aug 23, 2007 12:00 AM CDT up reply actions

I think the Giants will
rebound in 2 years -- those kid pitchers have plenty of potential, and if they figure out what to do with Bonds thankfully, for them -- that mess will be gone. Even though Lewis struck out 4 times tonight, he's going to be a good one.

The have to improve the pen, and get rid of most of the seniors.

When I was in Scottsdale this Spring, and met up with Al -- and took a look at this team -- I remember telling him -- the Giants are a last place team -- even with Barry Zito. (Al--Remember?)

I expressed that opinion to others out here on the coast, they thought I was nuts. The Diamondbacks seemed to be the easy pick for a last place team in the West. Ha!

And, in any case I'd rather see the Giants do well than the Padres or Dodgers. That goes back to 1989, as Giants fans were so nice to Cubs fans in that NLCS. I remembered that -- the polar opposite of the Padres fans in '84.

We lost, but I had Giants fans coming up to me and chatting, and overall -- it was a fun experience at the Stick.

by San Diego Smooth Jazz Man on Aug 23, 2007 12:15 AM CDT up reply actions

Lou made Bochy look like an amateur.
Pitch out on 2-1? Bochy called for that squeeze play. Everytime I see a Giants game the manager is screwing the game up for them. I believe San Diego did the right thing by letting this loser go.

by Fraggin Judge on Aug 23, 2007 12:42 AM CDT up reply actions

Well....
This "loser" squeezed 3 Division Championships and a World Series appearance during his 10+ years in San Diego -- and half that time, he had miserable material to work with. He really had 5 good teams during that time -- the rest were abhorrent to average.

The guy never complained when he had crap to manage. Yeah, I'd be a winner with some guy named Arci Cianfroccio starting at third one season...and Kevin Jarvis as my #1 starter.

by San Diego Smooth Jazz Man on Aug 23, 2007 12:49 AM CDT up reply actions

and he should have gotten a win tonight.

by Mac @ Bleed Cubbie Blue on Aug 23, 2007 12:03 AM CDT up reply actions

awesome!
I have learned some very important things from this years Cubs-
  1. an extra innings or one run game can indeed be won by the Cubs
  2. One bad outing by a pitcher does not mean they will have a major collapse
  3. It takes more than one or two stars to make a team click and win games, no matter how big or small the contribution might be, all these players have heart.
I have never ever wrote off the Cubs or threatened not to watch games, etc. But I have been down the dark path of pessimism and cynicism. I still couldn't admit to myself that this team has real guts and a huger to win even at the All Star break, but now... (wipes proud tear from cheek) They are doing great things!

Perfect managing tonight.
Managed to get 7 from Hill.
Intentional walk to Bonds with nobody on-- required Bochy to pinch run and get Bonds out of the game.
Allowed Marmol to start the 9th after a good 8th.
Let Marmol work himself out of the jam and finish the 9th.
Suicide squeeze for insurance.

Wow. Great win.

by ExNorthsider on Aug 23, 2007 12:03 AM CDT reply actions

We also got three big breaks
  1. Klesko missed a meat ball in the bottom of the ninth with the winning run on Second
  2. Pass Ball in the 10th
  3. The Error by the Second baseman which if it was handled would have been a 4-6-3 DP and Pie was not running on contact so he would have still been on Third.
But good team take advantage of big breaks and that's what the Cubs did tonight.

It was a great game!

True!
And "great managing" is a comment almost exclusively  used by the fans of the team that wins the game (i.e., yours truly).

by ExNorthsider on Aug 23, 2007 12:17 AM CDT up reply actions

Are they breaks
or, is that a bad team -- as I said earlier -- not executing in a close situation?

I think it's the latter. However, good teams take what's given to them. I hope the Cubs are moving into that class of team. We have seen glimpses of that.

And, when you are playing an inferior team -- you have to put your foot on their throat when that happens.

by San Diego Smooth Jazz Man on Aug 23, 2007 12:18 AM CDT up reply actions

I do think it's the latter....
the Giants didn't execute and we took advantage. That's what a good team does. Are we a "good team"? I think we're the best in our division, and becoming a "good team". Earlier in the broadcast Len mentioned that the Giants were 30-45 in games won by 2 runs or less. That is a bad team not executing.

A sweet win.
Great job Hill. Pure filthy shut 'em down stuff from Marmol. Great execution in the end. Jazz Man is right. Last place teams find ways to lose.....and winners take advantage. Their second baseman ended up being worse than ours and Cubs win.

You have to love these late inning rallies to win games.  Everyone's contributing, last night it was the top of the order and tonight the bottom.  I can't think of a better way to celebrate than with a new song from Bruce Springsteen.
