Open Thread: Cubs vs. Diamondbacks, Friday 8/24, 8:40 CT

SAN FRANCISCO -- Yes, I'm still in the Bay Area, returning to Chicago tonight (I hope, anyway, with the weather forecast being bad again), so I thought I'd get tonight's game thread posted early, as well as post a few morning headlines.

Daryle Ward's sorry he got picked off. OK, buddy. Next time think a little bit first!

Lou says he thinks there will be one more move before September 1. It could be a relief pitcher. And maybe, just maybe, Alfonso Soriano will return for the Brewers series next Tuesday. Or not -- Lou says he's going to be very careful with Soriano.

Meanwhile, Gordon Wittenmyer of the Sun-Times reminds us of all the angst the Cubs have gone through this year:

Coming off a 96-loss season, a clubhouse full of newly signed veterans had trouble adjusting to its new -- and less tolerant -- manager, had even more trouble playing smart baseball, was booed and criticized for underachieving after a $300 million winter spending spree, underwent constant lineup changes and roster shuffling, had a players-only bitch session followed promptly by a blowout loss to the Marlins, watched its pitching ace wrestle with emotions and command for two months because ownership tabled his contract extension, watched said ace punch his catcher in the mouth, lost the manager for a four-game suspension over a hat- and dirt-kicking tirade, lost All-Star first baseman Derrek Lee for five games for taking a swipe at a pitcher (on the other team), couldn't win a one-run game for two months, couldn't win an extra-innings game for three, dumped its problem catcher and Gold Glove shortstop in one-sided trades, left Jacque Jones twisting in the wind while trying unsuccessfully to trade him and lost $136 million outfielder Alfonso Soriano for three weeks and counting.
And then goes on to say that the winner of the NL Central could win it all. Why not?

vs. Ari -- vs. Cubs
Micah Owings hit two home runs and had a double and six RBI in his last start; the 11 total bases is the most for a pitcher in sixty-five years. But in addition to his hitting prowess, after tonight's game he is singlehandedly going to remove all the floodwaters from the Chicago area and break the downed trees into wood chips.

In more prosaic matters, he allowed two runs in four innings in what was eventually a 3-2 D'backs win in Chicago on July 21. He got a no-decision. The next day, Sean Marshall gave Arizona only one run in six innings, but the Cubs couldn't score off four D'back pitchers and lost 3-0.

The Cubs have not won in Bank Holding Company Ballpark since April 4, 2005, Opening Day that year, when they won a 16-6 blowout. Of the Cubs who played that day, only Derrek Lee and Aramis Ramirez remain with the club. (Also note who started at catcher for Arizona that day.) Time to end that drought!

i think a sweep
wouldnt be too much to ask. if you look at the matchups, we have the better pitcher going each game. our offense is much better than theirs, so why not a sweep?

Wow.
Even I won't be that optimistic. Of course we'd all love a sweep. But 2 of 3 would be just fine.

The problem with that
is the Cards won 3 of 4 from AZ in St. Louis while the Cubs lost 2 of 3 in Chicago.  It would be nice to make up some of that ground in this series and hope St. Louis gets their heads handed to them when they come to AZ.

Just so you all know...
I just saw Owings here the hospital where he was in the morgue actually bringing corpses back to life for families and then giving them each 1 million dollars (I sad that like Dr. Evil). Then for good measure he donated 500 million dollars to the federal governement so that all of us 30 somethings (and younger) won't get screwed out of our Social Security.  I tried to thank him for all of this but he took off like a speeding bullet to get back to Arizona.

Oh well, thanks Micah!

Okay, that's my favorite movie and yes, I always cry at that scene. The only other movie that makes me cry like that is "Brian's Song." However, I cry from the opening credits to the end of the movie!  Don't even ask me what the pages of the book/screenplay look like or what the chapter on "Pic" looks like in my copy of "I Am Third."

So this is what Ted Sizemore is doing these days
Ted Sizemore, a former Dodger who is now Rawlings's chief liaison with MLB players, is doing his best to address this. One of his tactics is to persuade minor-league prospects, not yet set in their ways, to wear the Primo during spring training. "You get them to like the color and the feel and the weight of the glove," he says. "A few start using it, and word of mouth spreads."

But as a former player, Sizemore understands the Sisyphean nature of his task. "It's very hard to get a player to change from something he really loves," he says.

Sizemore
I hope he's better at his new job than he was playing for the Cubs. He hit .248 with 2 homers and 24 RBI in 1979, his one year with the club. He also made 15 errors in just 96 games at second base.

If the Cubs want to do well
in this series, they have to get on top early and often. The D Backs play all 9 innings and don't quit. Their young players are very talented and even though the pitching staff numbers look to be in our favor, they are inflated somewhat because the D backs have been on the losing end of quite a few blowouts. So, if it's a tight game, we probably lose. And they are nails at home, only the Brewers have a better home win % in the NL.

Wrigley Rules?
Hi, this is my first post.  I'm seeking help from you BCBers in understanding the rules of Wrigley.  Can any of you explain why the Cubs have a limit on night games, and why they can't play night games on Friday?  I know that Chicago politics can be dicey, but these rules seem to hurt the Cubs, and I can't believe that anyone in Chicago wants to do that.  Why not allow the Cubs to play at night so that their schedule is the same as everyone else's?

Thanks for any insight you can give me.

by SackMan on Aug 24, 2007 1:08 PM CDT up reply actions

Ahh Wrigleyville
Having been a resident of the neighboorhood I can understand the residents desire to limit night games.  It really is a Jekyll and Hyde neighborhood.

If you haven't been in the area you need to understand that Wrigley is literally a city block that is completely surrounded by homes and businessess.  There is no parking for fans.  No parking garage.  Despite ample public transportation and shuttles the area becomes a driving and parking nightmare for everygame.  Day games have less of an impact on residents because many of them are at work.

The Cubs may get shafted with extra day games, you can't ignore the impact the games have on the area residents. And I can't blame them.  Really its a bad situation where there is a old ballpark that was built before considerations were made for cars.  I'd rather have more day games, than have the Cubs move out of the neighborhood.

by El Borto on Aug 24, 2007 1:48 PM CDT up reply actions

One also has to consider
That even now, 20 years after lights were put in the stadium, many consider "a day game at Wrigley" a perfect setting for baseball.  Not just a game at Wrigley, but a day game.

As a baseball fan, I like Wrigley having the large number of night games.  It might stink for me having to follow them at work, but it's the way baseball is meant to be played, and is also a lot better for younger fans.

Who's going down with Monroe pick up ???
Fox, Murton, Pie ???

Fox - had some bad AB's the other night had trouble in right.

Murton - What can you say, he reminds me of warning track power "Paul" Bako execpt he gets a few more hits. They both seem to ground into DP's.

Pie - Has no AB's since ???  Dont want to loose his speed or glove

Who would go down if Soriano come back next week.

Do the wait until 9/1 to save options ???

by parrotinct on Aug 24, 2007 1:47 PM CDT reply actions

Fox will go down...
Monroe directly replaces Fox as the "power RH bat" off the bench.  Murton's role is linked to Soriano's return.  Pie's role is linked to Pagan.

I still think we have too many OF and not enough backups in the IF.  Hopefully Ramirez, Theriot, and DeRosa avoid injury the rest of the way, because otherwise we're extremely limited.

by SouthernCub on Aug 24, 2007 2:28 PM CDT up reply actions

Disagree
Monroe will replace Murton in left.  Murton will now assume Fox's role as the RH bat that Piniella will use only as a last resort.  But I do agree that Fox will be the guy to get sent down.  Murton goes down when Soriano gets healthy.  I also agree that the Cubs need a real backup shortstop.

They talked
about this on Spots Nite last night and they don't think Lou will let him come back anytime before Sept. 1st. Their reasoning was why take a chance letting him come back when he wants to and further injuring himself and not be available next month when they will really need him.
I love this team!!!!!

by sue369 on Aug 24, 2007 5:07 PM CDT up reply actions

We've covered this before...
They both seem to ground into DP's.

Murton does NOT ground into a lot of double plays.  He has grounded into a TOTAL of 3 double plays all year.

he reminds me of warning track power "Paul" Bako

Are you kidding me?  That is silly.

Murton's career line: .290/.360/.440 OPS: 800
Bako's career line: .234/.307/.316 OPS: 623

They are not even close.

And the trib is reporting Fox is probably getting sent down.

by Johnny Callison was a Cub on Aug 24, 2007 2:59 PM CDT up reply actions

But that has nothing to do with his hitting into doubles plays often (he doesn't), nor does it have anything to do with him being a similar player to Paul Bako.

Sorry I was off on the DP's - venting after yester
However, do you want 4 HR and limited power out of Left Field slot.

When I referred to him a Paul Bako, I was speaking about power, most of his shots wind up 6 feet from the vines.

Thanks for the stats update !!!  Thats why we love this site and you guys

by parrotinct on Aug 24, 2007 3:19 PM CDT up reply actions

4?
4 home runs is not a lot.  But it sounds a lot worse than it really is.

4 home runs in 180 at-bats would be 13 home runs in 600 at-bats.

I still think that Murton will end up being a 20 hr guy, with a line of 300/360/470 or so.  That is pretty decent, and when you have A-Ram, Lee, and Soriano you can most definitely afford to have those numbers in a corner outfield spot.  Further, when you have A-Ram, Lee, Soriano, Z, etc. you NEED to have someone with those numbers, because that is call you can afford.

by big_lowitzki on Aug 24, 2007 3:34 PM CDT up reply actions

agree on this but
I agree 100% on the $$$ piece however

your not getting the HR production out of Lee, A-ram or soriano like we hoped early on.

As we sat here CT in early april my 14year old
said this was the HR production we needed to win.

150 or so

A-Ram - 35
Soriano - 30
Lee - 30
Barrett - 15
JJ - 15
Murton - 12
Floyd - 12
D-Ro - 10
Others - 15

These #'s are way off but its almost Sept 1st and they are in it 100% small ball can & does work.

I think we would all like to see a run of 10 games where we go 7 - 3 and win by medium / big #'s

Look at Milwakee's pitching since the break
least wins and most innings by the bull pen,
lets stay away from this

by parrotinct on Aug 24, 2007 5:29 PM CDT up reply actions

I used to rail on Todd Walker
and sparked some comments when that was brought up (he still sucks, by the way), but nothing like Murton.

He's a perfect combination of "good work ethic" appearance, underdog mentality, and OBP numbers that makes some people just love, love, love him.  On the other hand, his horrible defense and lack of consistent OPS has other people look at the total package and question just how good of a ballplayer he is.

He's the "Perfect Storm" for Moneyball.  Never has there been so much text for such an insignificant player.

by NO100 on Aug 24, 2007 3:51 PM CDT up reply actions

That's the definition of a 4th OF.
BTW, Murton hasn't hit into more DP because he hasn't had more AB with runners at first and less than 2 outs. But he has grounded out more than enough this season. Can we stop treating him as the second coming of Christ? (And that goes for Pie, too, who couldn't even hit lefties in the PCL). NO100 is right. We're wasting too much space on Al's server writing about Murton. Murton is a good substitute OF. But he has to learn how to pinch hit.

Wickman
According to the article on braves.com (http://atlanta.braves.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20070824&content_id=2167614&vkey=news_atl &fext=.jsp&c_id=atl), Wickman complains when he is pitching in non-save situations (even last night's tie game in the 12th).  I don't think that the Cubs need that type of attitude in the clubhouse right now.  It's also debatable whether or not he is as good a pitcher as Dempster, Howry, or Marmol right now.

On a different topic
There are plenty of posters here who do a lot of complaining, and moaning about Ryan Dempster -- but never notice when other closers have trouble. It's as if only Ryan Dempster has problems.  Tunnel vision, folks.

If you haven't noticed, the Padres Trevor Hoffman has blown 5 of his last 6 save chances, and 2 of his last 3. Luckily enough for the Pads, they have lost only one of those games. Hoffman surrendered the tying runs in 4 of those situations.

So, the next time you want to 'dump' on Dempster think about this potential HOFer who, right now -- has trouble getting outs.

by San Diego Smooth Jazz Man on Aug 24, 2007 7:03 PM CDT reply actions

Yes, but...
You are comparing a percentage of blown saves by a first ballot HOF to a guy who you never know which pitcher you are going to get - strike zone Demp, or Demp "He-Walk-A-Plenty".

Please don't EVER use Trevor Hoffman as an analogy for blown saves by Ryan Dempster. Its insulting to him.

It is AUGUST, and we're STILL IN IT! YES!

by TheEman on Aug 24, 2007 8:20 PM CDT up reply actions

Here is why SDSJM
because the only blown saves that matter to me are the ones that happen to the Cubs.

I would never dare to say Demp is the only one who blows saves.  I know it happens elsewhere but tunnel vision I have not...Cubs vision is more like it.

Demp aint that bad though I cannot stand that even when he is pitching and gets a save or closes a game, it NEVER comes easy (well maybe once this year but...).

No, Wednesday night was a "S"
for Hoffman. Tues/Thurs were blown saves, and Tuesday was the game lost to the Mets.

I see your point az, but many here just seem to think the Cubs are the only team that might have a bullpen stumble. The Indians are in first, in the AL Central with Joe Borowski and his 5+ ERA. Plenty of people think Borowski's leading a charmed life this season, for with that ERA -- how can he be a reliable closer? However, he seems to be.

The Tribe made a huge pitch for Hoffman. He eventually signed back with the Pads, after the Padres were shamed into offering him a contract somewhat close (but not as large) as the Indians offered. Borowski has 36 saves, opposed to Hoffman's 32. They've both blown the same amount of saves.

Even though Boroski's ERA is 5.51 and Hoffman's is 2.60 -- I guess the Tribe has about the same production for millions less in payroll.

However, is Borowski to be trusted in the post-season, should Cleveland make it there?

by San Diego Smooth Jazz Man on Aug 24, 2007 7:41 PM CDT reply actions

Borowski
The very idea of a "closer" having a 5.51 ERA makes me laugh. Closers were once the guys on the team with the lowest ERAs. Imagine Bruce Sutter with an ERA over 3 - it never would have happened. If Borowski has been that bad at keeping guys from scoring, he must be coming into a lot of games with a 3-run lead and giving up 2 and getting the final out with the bags loaded. To me, that's not a closer. It's a lousy pitcher with a very, very patient manager who never puts him into a real save situation.

by danimal15 on Aug 24, 2007 8:05 PM CDT up reply actions

No, that's not true.
Borowski's crappy ERA is almost completely attributable to three spectacular blown saves: April 19 vs. the Yankees, when he gave up six runs, including a walkoff grand slam to A-Rod; May 13 vs. the A's, four ER in 0.2 IP; and August 14 vs. the Tigers, four ER in 0.1 IP.

Take away those three games and his ERA drops to 3.12.

ERA's for closers can be very misleading; this is an extreme example.

That's the problem with...
small statistical samples. Well put, Al.

Right now, Dempster is one of the more effective closers in the NL. He wasn't sharp when he came off the DL and that forced Lou to say that he was going to use other pitchers in the closer role. It was the right move at the time. I remember posting that it was a challenge to Dempster. Well, he answered it very well. Dempster recovered and has been lights out since.

As much as I detest all the corporate sponsorship in baseball these days, I always got a kick out of D'back fans calling their park the "BoB".   Similar to the "Juicebox" in Houston and the "Phone Booth" in San Francisco, it shows a good sense of humor and some much needed irreverence.

So after JP Morgan Chase took over naming rights in Arizona, I disappointed the fans (and media) didn't pick up on the Morgan part of the name, and start to call it the "Morgue".

Oh man, the promotional possibilities are endless - Bill Veeck is spinning (and having a cold one) in his grave...

Typical ESPN "prognosticator"
Always riding the hot hand... two months ago the Brewers were gonna run away with the Central, a month ago, no one at ESPN is surprised when the Cubs chase the Brewers down and will go on to win the division... now, the Cardinals, by their estimation, are "hot" so they of course will win the division.

I remember an incident earlier in the season when John Kruk was on Sportscenter and they had a story about the Brewers and he said he thinks they will hold on and win the division.  On Baseball Tonight THE SAME DAY, the Cubs won and Kruk was talking about how the Cubs were gonna catch up and surpass the Brewers for the division title.  Say what you will about Joe Morgan (I can't stand the guy) but at least he's consistent and hates the Cubs all the time!

All you need to know about ESPN, you can learn from watching any of their bracket predictions (i.e. NFL playoffs, NCAA tournament) and tell me how many games they actually predict an upset.  Hardly ever.  It's usually all the #1 seeds or maybe they'll jump out on that limb and pick a #2.  Give me a break.  Oh, do I wish there was a decent alternative.

They have several commentators and each one picks a different team to watch. It makes all you folks talk about ESPN and watch the show. It's all premeditated, so relax everyone.

Not bad
46 pitches for the kid through 4...even caught the inning-ending pop-up behind the bump.

He's locating better than some of his previous starts. Kendall isn't having to move the glove too much.

Now, what to do with the pitcher? I say a couple inside hard ones. Just like BB was saying earlier, Owings has to go inside to make his outer stuff more effective. Bingo! Pitch him in.

And PIE, 2 pitches, 2 outs. Wonder why he's been on the bench for 12 games. Guess BP was a total fluke.

Too close for comfort. Snakes are good in the late innings. Len was mentioning earlier in the broadcast how good their record is when tied after 6 or 7 innings.

No, he's horrible. But expect him in the Cubs booth someday. Remember that, and take it to the bank.

He really used to bash the Cubs something awful. He's backed off a bit since he kissed and made up this winter and appeared at the convention.

He's gone through enough wives in the Valley Of The Sun and needs new prospects....in a town, where he's STILL worshipped....unfortunately, that is Chicago.

Grace is one of the biggest ass-kissers around.

I hope he gets consideration for the GG this year
Rolen definitely doesn't deserve it, and the other talked-about contender is Zimmerman, who I've seen a lot this year (I live in DC) and I just haven't been that overwhelmed.  David Wright could get consideration too, I suppose.  but Aramis really has raised his defense several levels since he arrived

Grace wonders why
Kendall bunts on 3-1. Maybe its because Kendall handles the bat so well with two strikes. Grace couldn't believe he would not be swinging at the best pitch he would see in the at bat. This is as bad as Grace's whining earlier in the game about D'back guys needing to bunt and "making that giraffe Marshall have to move around" but he makes the comment when the 3-4-5 hitters are due up. Sometimes I wonder how Grace was such a good player for so many years.
