Open Thread: Cubs vs. Diamondbacks, Friday 8/24, 8:40 CT

SAN FRANCISCO -- Yes, I'm still in the Bay Area, returning to Chicago tonight (I hope, anyway, with the weather forecast being bad again), so I thought I'd get tonight's game thread posted early, as well as post a few morning headlines.

Daryle Ward's sorry he got picked off. OK, buddy. Next time think a little bit first!

Lou says he thinks there will be one more move before September 1. It could be a relief pitcher. And maybe, just maybe, Alfonso Soriano will return for the Brewers series next Tuesday. Or not -- Lou says he's going to be very careful with Soriano.

Meanwhile, Gordon Wittenmyer of the Sun-Times reminds us of all the angst the Cubs have gone through this year:

Coming off a 96-loss season, a clubhouse full of newly signed veterans had trouble adjusting to its new -- and less tolerant -- manager, had even more trouble playing smart baseball, was booed and criticized for underachieving after a $300 million winter spending spree, underwent constant lineup changes and roster shuffling, had a players-only bitch session followed promptly by a blowout loss to the Marlins, watched its pitching ace wrestle with emotions and command for two months because ownership tabled his contract extension, watched said ace punch his catcher in the mouth, lost the manager for a four-game suspension over a hat- and dirt-kicking tirade, lost All-Star first baseman Derrek Lee for five games for taking a swipe at a pitcher (on the other team), couldn't win a one-run game for two months, couldn't win an extra-innings game for three, dumped its problem catcher and Gold Glove shortstop in one-sided trades, left Jacque Jones twisting in the wind while trying unsuccessfully to trade him and lost $136 million outfielder Alfonso Soriano for three weeks and counting.
And then goes on to say that the winner of the NL Central could win it all. Why not?

vs. Ari -- vs. Cubs
Micah Owings hit two home runs and had a double and six RBI in his last start; the 11 total bases is the most for a pitcher in sixty-five years. But in addition to his hitting prowess, after tonight's game he is singlehandedly going to remove all the floodwaters from the Chicago area and break the downed trees into wood chips.

In more prosaic matters, he allowed two runs in four innings in what was eventually a 3-2 D'backs win in Chicago on July 21. He got a no-decision. The next day, Sean Marshall gave Arizona only one run in six innings, but the Cubs couldn't score off four D'back pitchers and lost 3-0.

The Cubs have not won in Bank Holding Company Ballpark since April 4, 2005, Opening Day that year, when they won a 16-6 blowout. Of the Cubs who played that day, only Derrek Lee and Aramis Ramirez remain with the club. (Also note who started at catcher for Arizona that day.) Time to end that drought!

i think a sweep
wouldnt be too much to ask. if you look at the matchups, we have the better pitcher going each game. our offense is much better than theirs, so why not a sweep?

Wow.
Even I won't be that optimistic. Of course we'd all love a sweep. But 2 of 3 would be just fine.

I'd be happy with 1-2
Arizona is a damn good team.

The problem with that
is the Cards won 3 of 4 from AZ in St. Louis while the Cubs lost 2 of 3 in Chicago.  It would be nice to make up some of that ground in this series and hope St. Louis gets their heads handed to them when they come to AZ.

Just so you all know...
I just saw Owings here the hospital where he was in the morgue actually bringing corpses back to life for families and then giving them each 1 million dollars (I sad that like Dr. Evil). Then for good measure he donated 500 million dollars to the federal governement so that all of us 30 somethings (and younger) won't get screwed out of our Social Security.  I tried to thank him for all of this but he took off like a speeding bullet to get back to Arizona.

Oh well, thanks Micah!

This routine has gotten old
I'm going the other way.

Micah Owings taught Michael Vick the best way to drown puppies!

He didn't cry during Field of Dreams when Kevin Costner said, "Dad, wanna have a catch?"

He cheered when Drago killed Apollo Creed!

He RIPS THE TAGS OFF MATTRESSES!

We have to end the scourge that is Micah Owings.

Okay, that's my favorite movie and yes, I always cry at that scene. The only other movie that makes me cry like that is "Brian's Song." However, I cry from the opening credits to the end of the movie!  Don't even ask me what the pages of the book/screenplay look like or what the chapter on "Pic" looks like in my copy of "I Am Third."

I believe I was mistaken.  He actually went to the morgue and stole organs to make a "natural" suit.  He stole money from purses laying around patient's rooms, he stole money from me (!), and then he hopped in his gas guzzling SUV, drove over several sick people on his way out of Chicago, and then sped the whole way home.

So this is what Ted Sizemore is doing these days
Ted Sizemore, a former Dodger who is now Rawlings's chief liaison with MLB players, is doing his best to address this. One of his tactics is to persuade minor-league prospects, not yet set in their ways, to wear the Primo during spring training. "You get them to like the color and the feel and the weight of the glove," he says. "A few start using it, and word of mouth spreads."

But as a former player, Sizemore understands the Sisyphean nature of his task. "It's very hard to get a player to change from something he really loves," he says.

Sizemore
I hope he's better at his new job than he was playing for the Cubs. He hit .248 with 2 homers and 24 RBI in 1979, his one year with the club. He also made 15 errors in just 96 games at second base.

If the Cubs want to do well
in this series, they have to get on top early and often. The D Backs play all 9 innings and don't quit. Their young players are very talented and even though the pitching staff numbers look to be in our favor, they are inflated somewhat because the D backs have been on the losing end of quite a few blowouts. So, if it's a tight game, we probably lose. And they are nails at home, only the Brewers have a better home win % in the NL.

I was in a Mall here in CT last night and LIDS had a whole section of these roped off. Must of been 10 guys trying on different colors.

That's why
the comment in the article about MLB not realizing the gang relationship is such BS.  If stores are cordoning off the caps, they obviously know.  As a 40+ year old white guy, I can look at the caps and see the gang association.  I take back my earlier comment below.  MLB probably was in on the idea.

Wrigley Rules?
Hi, this is my first post.  I'm seeking help from you BCBers in understanding the rules of Wrigley.  Can any of you explain why the Cubs have a limit on night games, and why they can't play night games on Friday?  I know that Chicago politics can be dicey, but these rules seem to hurt the Cubs, and I can't believe that anyone in Chicago wants to do that.  Why not allow the Cubs to play at night so that their schedule is the same as everyone else's?

Thanks for any insight you can give me.

by SackMan on Aug 24, 2007 1:08 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Ahh Wrigleyville
Having been a resident of the neighboorhood I can understand the residents desire to limit night games.  It really is a Jekyll and Hyde neighborhood.

If you haven't been in the area you need to understand that Wrigley is literally a city block that is completely surrounded by homes and businessess.  There is no parking for fans.  No parking garage.  Despite ample public transportation and shuttles the area becomes a driving and parking nightmare for everygame.  Day games have less of an impact on residents because many of them are at work.

The Cubs may get shafted with extra day games, you can't ignore the impact the games have on the area residents. And I can't blame them.  Really its a bad situation where there is a old ballpark that was built before considerations were made for cars.  I'd rather have more day games, than have the Cubs move out of the neighborhood.

by El Borto on Aug 24, 2007 1:48 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

One also has to consider
That even now, 20 years after lights were put in the stadium, many consider "a day game at Wrigley" a perfect setting for baseball.  Not just a game at Wrigley, but a day game.

As a baseball fan, I like Wrigley having the large number of night games.  It might stink for me having to follow them at work, but it's the way baseball is meant to be played, and is also a lot better for younger fans.

Who's going down with Monroe pick up ???
Fox, Murton, Pie ???

Fox - had some bad AB's the other night had trouble in right.

Murton - What can you say, he reminds me of warning track power "Paul" Bako execpt he gets a few more hits. They both seem to ground into DP's.

Pie - Has no AB's since ???  Dont want to loose his speed or glove

Who would go down if Soriano come back next week.

Do the wait until 9/1 to save options ???

by parrotinct on Aug 24, 2007 1:47 PM CDT   0 recs

Fox will go down...
Monroe directly replaces Fox as the "power RH bat" off the bench.  Murton's role is linked to Soriano's return.  Pie's role is linked to Pagan.

I still think we have too many OF and not enough backups in the IF.  Hopefully Ramirez, Theriot, and DeRosa avoid injury the rest of the way, because otherwise we're extremely limited.

by SouthernCub on Aug 24, 2007 2:28 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Disagree
Monroe will replace Murton in left.  Murton will now assume Fox's role as the RH bat that Piniella will use only as a last resort.  But I do agree that Fox will be the guy to get sent down.  Murton goes down when Soriano gets healthy.  I also agree that the Cubs need a real backup shortstop.

by cubsbak on Aug 24, 2007 2:41 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

I was referring to Murton's role...
on the roster.  When Soriano comes back, Murton goes down.

Not if he comes back on Tuesday...
if He comes back before Sept 1, Murton will be sent down for a few days.  But yes, if Soriano comes back Sept 1 or later, Murton will stay up.

by SouthernCub on Aug 24, 2007 4:56 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

They talked
about this on Spots Nite last night and they don't think Lou will let him come back anytime before Sept. 1st. Their reasoning was why take a chance letting him come back when he wants to and further injuring himself and not be available next month when they will really need him.
I love this team!!!!!

by sue369 on Aug 24, 2007 5:07 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

We've covered this before...
They both seem to ground into DP's.

Murton does NOT ground into a lot of double plays.  He has grounded into a TOTAL of 3 double plays all year.

he reminds me of warning track power "Paul" Bako

Are you kidding me?  That is silly.

Murton's career line: .290/.360/.440 OPS: 800
Bako's career line: .234/.307/.316 OPS: 623

They are not even close.

And the trib is reporting Fox is probably getting sent down.

by big_lowitzki on Aug 24, 2007 2:38 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Murton is what he is
.270 15 hrs, and 70 rbi's in a full season. How many times have we seen him hit weak ground balls for nothing.

by Johnny Callison was a Cub on Aug 24, 2007 2:59 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Perhaps...
But that has nothing to do with his hitting into doubles plays often (he doesn't), nor does it have anything to do with him being a similar player to Paul Bako.

by big_lowitzki on Aug 24, 2007 3:11 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Sorry I was off on the DP's - venting after yester
However, do you want 4 HR and limited power out of Left Field slot.

When I referred to him a Paul Bako, I was speaking about power, most of his shots wind up 6 feet from the vines.

Thanks for the stats update !!!  Thats why we love this site and you guys

by parrotinct on Aug 24, 2007 3:19 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

4?
4 home runs is not a lot.  But it sounds a lot worse than it really is.

4 home runs in 180 at-bats would be 13 home runs in 600 at-bats.

I still think that Murton will end up being a 20 hr guy, with a line of 300/360/470 or so.  That is pretty decent, and when you have A-Ram, Lee, and Soriano you can most definitely afford to have those numbers in a corner outfield spot.  Further, when you have A-Ram, Lee, Soriano, Z, etc. you NEED to have someone with those numbers, because that is call you can afford.

by big_lowitzki on Aug 24, 2007 3:34 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

agree on this but
I agree 100% on the $$$ piece however

your not getting the HR production out of Lee, A-ram or soriano like we hoped early on.

As we sat here CT in early april my 14year old
said this was the HR production we needed to win.

150 or so

A-Ram - 35
Soriano - 30
Lee - 30
Barrett - 15
JJ - 15
Murton - 12
Floyd - 12
D-Ro - 10
Others - 15

These #'s are way off but its almost Sept 1st and they are in it 100% small ball can & does work.

I think we would all like to see a run of 10 games where we go 7 - 3 and win by medium / big #'s

Look at Milwakee's pitching since the break
least wins and most innings by the bull pen,
lets stay away from this

by parrotinct on Aug 24, 2007 5:29 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

I used to rail on Todd Walker
and sparked some comments when that was brought up (he still sucks, by the way), but nothing like Murton.

He's a perfect combination of "good work ethic" appearance, underdog mentality, and OBP numbers that makes some people just love, love, love him.  On the other hand, his horrible defense and lack of consistent OPS has other people look at the total package and question just how good of a ballplayer he is.

He's the "Perfect Storm" for Moneyball.  Never has there been so much text for such an insignificant player.

by NO100 on Aug 24, 2007 3:51 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

That's the definition of a 4th OF.
BTW, Murton hasn't hit into more DP because he hasn't had more AB with runners at first and less than 2 outs. But he has grounded out more than enough this season. Can we stop treating him as the second coming of Christ? (And that goes for Pie, too, who couldn't even hit lefties in the PCL). NO100 is right. We're wasting too much space on Al's server writing about Murton. Murton is a good substitute OF. But he has to learn how to pinch hit.

Looks like a lefty for Monroe
This article by Jon Paul Morosi from the DFP indicates that Cotts, Ohman or Rapada will be the PTBNL in the Monroe deal.  Apparently the Tigers were interested in Ohman during last offseason.

seems like a lot
I would be suprised if it is a major league player.  They were ready to waive him and eat his contract.  Has it been said how much salary the cubs are responsible for?

If that is the case
I wish we could have saved the trouble and gotten something better for Ohman..you know, if they were actually INTERESTED in him.

Monroe is better...
...than the bag of balls I was hoping to get for OhMan.

It's win/win!

Did we get a bag of balls too?
THEN it will be worth it!

that makes sense....Ohman for Monroe
Two players on the outs with each club, Ohman opens up a 40 man spot so no one else is effected. Cotts is so what and Rapada, well I guess if they really wanted him.
Milw-09-24-98--Brown in for defense--bases loaded--flyball--HE DROPPED THE BALL!!!NO NO NO, cubs lose 8-7

Drat ! Fielder serving suspension NOW
He couldn't have waited a few days or more precisely MLB
could not have made the decision MONDAY?. Anyway reduced from 3 games to two.

Apologies if this has already been listed but I did not see it.
