Around SBN: Knicks Beat Lakers With Familiar Strategy

Open Thread: Cubs vs. Mets, Sunday 8/5, 7:05 CT

Here are a few miscellaneous overlooked facts about a game that is going to get a tremendous amount of hype tonight.

The Cubs' attendance record for a 3-game series is 124,810, set during the Milwaukee series at the end of June. The first two games of the Mets series have drawn a total of 82,924. Thus if the announced paid crowd is 41,887 or more, that would break that one-month-old record. The largest crowd of the year so far is 41,909 on the Saturday of that Milwaukee series. Another attendance note: the Cubs' current season attendance is 2,277,806, an average of 39,961 per date. If they draw 42,194 tonight (unlikely; the above-mentioned 41,909 is the largest announced crowd since the bleacher expansion last year), that would make the average exactly 40,000 for 58 dates.

On to a few notes about Tom Glavine's second attempt to win his 300th career game. Wrigley Field has been the home to a 500th HR (Ernie Banks' in 1970) and a 3000th hit (Stan Musial's, in 1958). The Cubs have had a 300th victory recorded against them (Warren Spahn's), but that was in Milwaukee on August 11, 1961.

So I asked Mike to do a little research into which parks had two or three of these major milestones. Here's what he found:

PARKS WITH ALL THREE (500/3000/300) ACTIVE OR DEFUNCT
Busch Stadium II, St. Louis. 500th HR: Griffey, McGwire. 3000th hit: Brock. 300th win: Carlton.
Angels Stadium, Anaheim (various names) 500th HR: Jackson. 3000th hit: Carew, Brett. 300th win: Sutton.

ACTIVE PARKS WITH TWO (in addition to Wrigley Field):
AT&T Park, San Francisco. 500th HR: Bonds. 300th win: Maddux.
Yankee Stadium, New York. 500th HR: Mantle, Rodriguez. 300th win: Seaver, Clemens.
Metrodome, Minneapolis. 500th HR: Thomas. 3000th hit: Winfield, Ripken, Murray.

The West Side Grounds was the site of Nichols' 300th win, and Anson's 3000th hit (traditional numbering, depends on which reference you accept).

And then he added:

This was a SOB to compile, I couldn't find one list that gave all the parks or all the box scores.

That said, let's hope Wrigley Field stays, after tonight, on the "two-milestone" list.

vs. NY -- vs. Cubs
Despite the Cubs' lack of success vs. LHP this season (10-16, worst in the NL), the idea of beating Glavine isn't that much of a stretch. Like his former teammate Greg Maddux, Glavine's not the five-time 20-game winner he once was. He is 14-13, 3.64 vs. the Cubs, but in his last seven starts at Wrigley Field dating back to 1996, he's only 1-4, 4.85. He got a no-decision in a 5-4 Mets win at Shea on May 14, allowing four ER in 6 IP.

His opponent that day was tonight's opponent, Jason Marquis, who threw pretty well in his last start. The Cubs are 14-8 in games Marquis has started (despite his own pedestrian 8-6, 4.22 mark), and are 4-0 in games he has started at Wrigley Field since I acquired my Marquis jersey.

Yes, I know that doesn't really have anything to do with Marquis' or the team's actual performance. But can't we have a little fun? Perhaps more importantly than those records, the Cubs are 10-2 in games Marquis has started at Wrigley Field. He is 6-2, 3.79 at home. Glavine is 3-5, 5.53 on the road.

Among player matchups, Ramon Castro is .455/.500/1.091 vs. Marquis (5-for-11 with a double and 2 HR) and Aramis Ramirez is .500/.571/.955 (11-for-22, a double, 3 HR, 5 walks) vs. Glavine.

Here's today's Mediacenter if you want to follow any of the other games; today's Cubs/Mets game is, of course, on national cable TV.

Milwaukee's Err-Rod comes through with a
crucial error in top of ninth.  All tied 6-6 now.  So much for the "feel good"  win yesterday.  And unlike Wrigley, I good hear f-bombs being hurled at Braun (on the TV) after he missed that grounder.

Where'd all the Mets fans come from??
Was at Wrigley yesterday, and have never seen so many opp fans in the crowd. Any guesses as to why? Obviously the Mets' success this season will surely draw traveling groupies, just wondering if there was any more to it than that (and if there isn't, how the hell did so many of em get better seats than me??). My buddy guessed there are tons of Mets fans in Chicago. I guess there are worse places for New Yorkers to relocate to (what's up Boston), but I still wasn't buying that.

by mrsmiff on Aug 5, 2007 4:33 PM CDT reply actions

I second this.
I was sitting UD box in LF and they even got a (quickly extinguished) "Let's Go Mets" chant going. There did seem to be quite a contingent of Met fans there, at any rate.

LIke Chicagoans
Ex-New Yorkers are everywhere...however....The Mets are the equivalent to the White Sox. When the Mets win, the Mets 'fans' are everywhere. I've seen this in SD so much. Dodgers fans are also in Petco -- same with Cubs fans, win or lose.

That's not the case with Mets fans -- if they are NOT winning, they are not attending games in SD. (Perhaps there's a bigger crowd of ex-patriots in LA)

Mets fans love their team, win or tie.

NY is a Yankees town. Always will be. The Mets entertain sometimes, but are always #2.

Yost: "our bullpen is overused."
No kidding.  Cordero and Turn-blow's arms will soon fall off.  As bad as we should feel for the Cub bullpen, the Brewer's back end is warn out.

Soriano: rub two of those big bats together and you will catch fire!

by LAcarl519 on Aug 5, 2007 5:24 PM CDT reply actions

the real problem there is
that they are overused because of Yost.  He considers Suppan going 5 2/3 as a good outing for him, and pulled him at like 80 pitches.  As a fan...i obviously want a little more out of a guy getting payed that much money.  The loss sucked today, and i wish they'd quit doing this to the fans, but it was still a decent homestand and i'm hoping for a .500 road trip (in fantasy land...)

i don't think it is simply the fact
that dempster has blown a couple saves that has some people calling for a change. my problem with dempster has to do with his pitching style. he seems  to fight the strikezone. i think that he has trouble repeating his pitching motion. i also think he overthrows. add that to his 'snowball' mentality, where it becomes difficult to right the ship, and we have a problem. now, i'm not necessarily calling for his removal, as i think a major bullpen shakeup could cause problems. however, i do think dempster is a problem. the only other option is howry; i don't think you want to take marmol out of his current role. i only say howry because he can throw strikes with consistency, though he will give up some sharp hits with those fastballs.

so, dempster remains the guy, but the criticism of him that you see around here is certainly valid, and dempster is average at best.

Technically
Saturday's game will score better ratings than this one. Strangely enough, not everybody's....cabled or set with satellite. Also, it's in prime time on the East Coast, Midwest... It may be re-run season, but still....Good numbers expected in NYC, and Chicago, but not everywhere else. Why should the west coast even give a damn, for example, with the exception of the transplanted Cubs and Mets fans.

Football does way better on ESPN than baseball does. Every game's an event in the NFL. Not so in baseball.

So, even though only 3/4th of the country saw Saturday's game on Fox, those ratings should still eclipse these.

These games on ESPN are not as big as you might think. The hype job works very well, but these games are for the hard core, not the casual fan.

the misplay in CF
didnt cost Marquis anything, no guarantee they get him at the plate

Marquis put himself in this mess by walking the 8th hitter and then giving up a hit to the pitcher

by DartmouthCubsFan on Aug 5, 2007 7:38 PM CDT up reply actions

I agree with that
but that doesn't mean it doesn't effect his concentration it went from a possibility to nothing with the misplay not to mention Milledge had just touched thrid when Pagan was transferring and dropping the ball

got good looks off Glavine.  I don't think he is throwing a shut-out tonight.  As long as this ump keeps an honest outside corner we will be fine.

Pagan, never knows how many outs there are
This passed week on three separate occasions he has messed up, right there he didnt know there were three threw the ball in and started to retreat then motored in for the second time, on Monday night he thought there were three instead of two and started sprinting in. Granted i rather he think there are more outs than less outs that way he doesnt turn and fire a live ball into the stands but this guy is making stupid mental mistakes no?

Podsednik on the Sox just came back from a groin pull...
He was on the DL for about 5 weeks (I think).

It all depends on the severity of the injury and how well he heals.

Alfonso is great, dont get me wrong but...
We have been needing a true leadoff hitter at certain times this year to set the table.  I think this team is at its best when Fontenot and Theriot are in the lineup and maybe this injury wont be as catastrophic as we think.

and hopefully you're right

with that said... this team was one bat short with Soriano healthy, losing him makes them 2 bats short

I don't think Felix Pie...
...is an appropriate replacement for Soriano, because then that probably makes our outfield entirely left-handed (as Lou seems to indicate that having Murton around is simply to provide him with the option of a right-handed outfielder, not the practice of one). I, uh, don't know that I like having an all-lefty outfield.

by cwyers on Aug 5, 2007 8:34 PM CDT up reply actions

Well...
Eric Patterson bats left, they have been playing him in LF as of late, he has power and speed like Soriano (14 HR, 14 SB in Triple-A) and they already gave Pie a chance.  It's out of left-field I'll grant you, but based on how Pie has performed, why not give someone else a chance?

by IllinoisCubs on Aug 5, 2007 8:42 PM CDT up reply actions

E. Patterson sucks balls
if you look at this numbers his OPS has dropped a .100 points every time he moves up the minor league system.

So excuse me for not getting excited about a crappy second baseman who is projected to have a .500 OPS in the Majors.

by Joe on Aug 5, 2007 8:44 PM CDT up reply actions

Your ignorance
is only surpassed by your potty mouth.

Patterson's OPS is higher this year in AAA than it was last season in AA.  And he's only been a professional three years.

Before this season, PECOTA predicted an OPS for Eric Patterson in the majors of .837.

So not only do you need to do some major growing up and a major attitude adjustment, you need to know what you are talking about before you let loose that sewer you call a mouth.

This is, without a doubt, the toughest game to watch this year. I've got a really, really bad feeling about what that Soriano injury might do to us. Worst yet, it's that type of "stereotypical" Cubs loss (well, not yet) that really lets idiots run their mouths.

Did you have a really, really bad feeling
when he was out for almost two weeks with the hammy?

by Not Bruce Froemming on Aug 5, 2007 8:51 PM CDT up reply actions

Of course not
That was a mild injury in terms of severity and time off needed -- and also something of a blessing in disguise, since it ultimately resulted in Soriano's relocation to LF. We're most certainly talking DL based on what we've heard, and that starts a rotation of mediocre outfielders (Floyd-Murton-Jones) that can't fill Soriano's shoes offensively, based on how they've done this year. I hope more than anything we can regroup -- I just have a bad feeling, that's all I'm saying.
"And heeeere cooome the pretzels!"

by NightPutting on Aug 5, 2007 8:56 PM CDT up reply actions

I'll say it again
I've been accused of being a kool-air drinker, too optimistic, etcetra, etcetra.

But there are times you have to pause and just wonder....hey, injuries happen. The Cubs can't afford to lose 3 position players -- Soriano, Lee and A-Ram. Even though Soriano not quite giving us what we hoped -- the promise is there. The possibility of a lot of run production is lost.

But, Lou might be able to figure this situation out -- something Dusty could never do.

by cubsbak on Aug 5, 2007 9:13 PM CDT up reply actions

the comparison was between lou and dusty
in 03 dusty's managed team was 4 games over when the star went down for 3 weeks, when he returned they were 6 games over

this team is now 7 games over

we'll see where they're at when Soriano returns

my point was they stayed the course when they lost their big time superstar

and the manager happened to be dusty baker

THUS, baker was able to "hold the fort" together when they lost one of their key players back in 03, it happened

by razzpunk on Aug 5, 2007 8:54 PM CDT reply actions

Unlike when Lee got hurt
this team is more multidimensional.

Secondly, Soriano hadn't played up to his potential this season. Of course, it's better to have him than not have him, and he's not easily replaceable. But Pie is capable, and with potential for a trade, there's at least enough to patch it together until Soriano returns.

This team has shown it can bounce back from almost anything. Dusty basically gave last year's team an excuse to tank after Lee was injured. I don't think Piniella will do the same.

Would I rather have Soriano? Absolutely. But this isn't the end of the world, nor the end of the season.

Like I said, look at how many Phillies are on the DL. Think they're feeling sorry for themselves?

And no, I am not a Kool-Aid drinker. I do think you're a hemlock drinker, however.

by Not Bruce Froemming on Aug 5, 2007 8:58 PM CDT up reply actions

A few
One, you obviously don't watch much baseball.  Injuries happen all over.  Currently Beltran is on the Mets DL and the Mets do just fine...same for the Phillies.  Both teams reasonably comparable to the Cubs.  Secondly, you have no idea how long Soriano will be out.  Maybe 2 weeks, maybe 6, maybe just 15 days.  It's not worth the time or effort to figure it out when you have no control over it.  Lastly, the Cubs are a good team with Soriano and are still a good team without him.  If they get good pitching, they'll score enough runs to win games.  It's that simple for most of us.
Eighty-five percent of the f*ckin' world is working. The other fifteen percent come out here. -- Lee Constantine Elia, 1983.

agree...to apoint...
The pitching has been there all year....in spite of a relatively weak defense....and the offense frequently doesn't score enoug to win...it's been the Cub's achilles heel all season....

Like tonight...pitching really (being generous) can only relly be blamed for 3 runs...The defense is weak as The Cubs  are sacrificing defense for offense tonight...but the offense hasn't scored ... and Glavine's been struggling all night..and the only reason he has more strikes than balls is the Cubs pathetic offense keeps swinging at pitches out of the strike zone (and the new wave of incopetence sweeping NL umpires behind the plate).....

The best defense is a good offense

Two things are certain
after tonight's loss. Marquis still sucks, and the Cubs are no longer a "hot" team. The wonderful run from the last month is over. I think it is going to be nip and tuck with Milwaukee the rest of the way. The lack of offense worries me. In 23 innings against the mets this weekend, we have scored runs in all of three innings and we are getting completely shut down tonight by a guy with a 4.21 era. This is not the Glavine of the 90's. I still like our chances, but our inability to score for long stretches concerns me. Losing Soriano isn't going to help.

The early successes were b/c it was COLD!

He just cannot continue to be an effective pitcher by walking batters in key ab's. It is very frustrating - we do not have an answer for the #3 spot, however, unless the team can go w/a two-man rotation!

Just to keep this game in prespective
The Cubs are going to lose this series and go 3-4 on the home stand.

We also lost our team leader in homers and runs scored.

We are going to be a game behind the Brewers.

And our Pen is still over taxed from our starting pitchers not being able to go past the f-ing 6th inning (not including Lilly last night).

So wood coming back and looking great (He gave up a BS check swing hit) but struck out a batter and his stuff was moving all over the place.

Funny
you never said you wanted Jones in there until now.

If only the Cubs still had Barrett....

We know, you think Barrett's great, you think Lou's an idiot, and you think Murton's great and should play more.  Will you stop posting the same stupid things now?

by cubsbak on Aug 5, 2007 9:52 PM CDT up reply actions

actually you've got it all wrong
1. i said the cubs should have an OF out there

didnt say Murton specifically when i complained about DeRosa being in RF

  1. i dont love Barrett, i just think people used him as a scapegoat and didnt realize the good offense he brought in the past that often outweighed the poor defense (until this season when he wasnt producing offensively). I think Kendall is a poor option at catcher and our best option is sitting in AAA hitting HRs every other night
  2. I dont hate Lou, i think he's a fine manager. I just don't think he is significantly better than Dusty Baker and I think the reason we've had more success this year than last year is the incredible influx of talent
  3. i do like Murton, i think he's a better option than Floyd (who is atrocious defensively and hasn't hit for power in 2 years... he's aging and declining)
those have been my points on all those subjects and they've been consistent throughout

take the time to read my posts and maybe you'll have a better idea of where i stand on things, because i'm consistent with all my opinions and i do my best to make them as clear as possible

by cubsbak on Aug 5, 2007 10:10 PM CDT up reply actions

again
i said Murton should get into the game when Soriano went down

however, when i complained that we needed an OF in the field and not a 2B with two posts

post 1:

that was a 2B's route to the ball

post 2:

think we should actually play an OF out there????

as opposed to a 2B????

OH NUTS !!!
All season I constantly see posts talking about the "good" and "bad" Ohman, Eyre, Marquis, etc.
This is nothing more than a damn smokescreen for the failure to call a lousy pitcher just plain lousy.
The only relief that Eyre and Ohman have provided all year is the relief for the oppostion when their shrinking lead in a game becomes bigger when either of these guys comes into a game. And don't give me this dung about Eyre doing better than the first half.
Both of these guys are painfully inconsistent. They scare the crap out of me every time they come into the game.
And again tonite we see what Ohman has done all season long.
There is no reason and I mean no damn reason why this guy should be in a Cubs uniform.
I don't care if they bring up some kid from Peoria, Ohman has got to go.

Teams cannot escape injury. However, when you placed a lot of money/hope in this guy, it's a punch in the gut.

You see the penny-pinching Padres get 3 HR's out of Scott Hairston in 3 straight AB's and you want to puke. Seems as if shopping at the 99-cent store isn't so bad as it seems.

It's like watching "Groundhog Day." Even it gets to me, after a while. As I said earlier, with Dusty in the chair -- this season's toast. With Lou, well...that's a different story. He might ba able to say shut up, and play and don't feel sorry for yourself. "Cowboy Up." The Cubs will not make the playoffs this year.
I am hoping for a good owner, good GM, and some decent trades that will make a good core into a great team.
We lack too many necessities to make a run.
Bullpen, especially left handeers.
Starting pitchers, they need someone to replace Marquis.
They need a catcer, center fielder, left fielder, and second baseman. Fontenont and DeRosa are solid backups, not starters.
Trade or release Jones, Pagan, and Kendall.
Trade either Marhall or Hill for another right hander.
I really think next year we could be much better.
Oh, and by the way, I always turn off the sound when Miller and Morgan are calling a game.

Funny how a lot of other teams lose key guys and keep on smokin'.

by Not Bruce Froemming on Aug 5, 2007 10:05 PM CDT up reply actions

Exactly
I am saying that this team is going to come up a little short this year - they don't have key players to make a legitimate run. Losing Soriano has nothing to do with it.
I believe we have a good core of young players, we just need to build around that.
And by the way, I think this is the best starting pitching staff the Cubs have had since the Holtzman, Jenkins, and Hands days.

by Ken Hubbs on Aug 5, 2007 10:12 PM CDT up reply actions

And, you are exactly right.

I agree to a point. It isn't Soriano's fault he got hurt - no matter what his salary is. However, it is his fault for swinging at every pitch that is anywhere within 20 feet of the plate!!!

I think Selig should let Cuban buy the Cubs look what he did for the Mav's.
However I've heard he is favoring a guy who currently is part owner of the brewers, yea no conflict of interest their.
Selig is to busy covertly dissing Bonds, since no owners made any money off of players who took steroids and baseball wasn't saved by two steroid users in 1998 (sorry i'm not a bud selig fan, look what you started)

Its not bud but other owners
Every owner has to agree to let cuban buy the cubs.  Reinsdorf doesnt like Cuban and he is good friends with bud,so it'll probably not happen.

As for Santana or A-rod?  You have to be insane. If the Cubs sign big Z for 18 million, they are not going to pay 30 million for a-rod or Santana a year.  If you think that price seems unreasonable, then you've got another thing coming. Also, Soriano's yearly pay only goes up. He's only making ten million this year. It just keeps going up.

Due to Lee's injury, he's going to finish this season with mediocre (for Lee) stats - but from this moment through the end of the season, he's going to be one of the top offensive 1B in the game. And his glove isn't bad either.

Best player?
What makes you think Lee is our best player?
Ramirez and Zambrano are more important in my opinion. And yes that is an opinion, just like everyone else on this thread.
I will say it again,
  1. Lee can back a teammate without taking shots at us - he did the same thing last year with Dusty.
  2. We do not have the players this year to make a run.
That is my opinion - But I hope I am wrong.

by Ken Hubbs on Aug 5, 2007 10:33 PM CDT up reply actions

Come on...
Ken, are you serious? Zambrano better than Lee? Well, if you were comparing the two by only letting Lee play every 5th day, you would have an argument.

Like it or not, Lee is more so the heart and soul of this team than any player. Ramirez is a helluva ball player, but he just quietly goes about his game putting up numbers. Lee has been that way before, but is now a vocal leader, by example and and in the clubhouse.

What I have said isn't a fact, but you would have a hard time finding a large following in the "Derrek Lee is not our best player so let's trade him" camp.

Now, if you made that argument about Ohman, hey, I'm right there on your side drankin' Old Style for a Long While.

YMMV,

"No one is going to get to 300 wins, except for maybe Randy Johnson..."

Mark Buehrle 27 years old, 106 wins
Tom Glavine at 27 years old, 85 wins

I'd say Buehrle has a very good chance at 300 wins.

by DrCrawdad on Aug 5, 2007 10:10 PM CDT reply actions

Yeah but Glavine
has played on a playoff team for I dont know how long which means he s winning a lot of games whether he's pitching well enough too or not, and i believe they still had 4 man rotations in Atlanta for awhile which means more starts

by INWes44 on Aug 5, 2007 10:12 PM CDT up reply actions

Do your homework ESPN!
Great preparation by the ESPN guys as they glossed over Buehrle, who has a realistic shot at 300 career wins.

On Buehrle's page on BaseballReference.com Glavine is listed as the 2nd "Similar Pitchers through Age 27" to Buehrle.

BTW Glavine's first 4 years the Braves were terrible finishing in 6th place 3 straight years.  In Glavine's rookie season they finished in 5th.

by DrCrawdad on Aug 5, 2007 10:34 PM CDT up reply actions

But, Dr C
Glavine came in at the end of an era -- the 4 man rotation. Nowdays, we have to baby our pitchers with the 5 man rotation. I don't see anybody getting enough starts anymore to come close to having the chance to win 300 games.

Everybody faints when a pitcher hits 100 pitches. In the olden days, we didn't even count the damn pitches, and Tom Seaver probably threw 125+ in all of those complete games he racked up.

Perhaps Buehrle can make it to 300 wins. But his win percentage would have to skyrocket, because he'll never have as many starts as he needs.

A swing and a miss ...
... on my part.

"Perhaps Buehrle can make it to 300 wins. But his win percentage would have to skyrocket, because he'll never have as many starts as he needs."

I overlooked that but it's a great point.

"Glavine came in at the end of an era -- the 4 man rotation. Nowdays, we have to baby our pitchers with the 5 man rotation."

I don't know how many games of Glavine's first 7 years were in a 4 man rotation.  IP and GS, Glavine and Buerhle are very close on a glance of their career stats.

by DrCrawdad on Aug 5, 2007 11:41 PM CDT up reply actions

It's not so much just the four-man rotation...
...so much as it is the move toward using bullpens more and limiting pitch counts. Guys just don't get as many decisions as they used to.

Hurly, Buehrle man...
BUEHRLE/GLAVINE
DECISIONS 163/161
GAMES STARTED 204/208
INNINGS PITCHED 1427.9/1356.9

Take a look at the numbers, it doesn't appear to me that they support your opinion.  Maybe I've missed something (as I did earlier in this discussion) and if so please let me know.

It looks to me that Buehrle has more innings pitched and more decisions per games started.

Granted in Buehrle's first season he worked primarily out of the pen and had only 3 starts but he also only pitched 51 innings.  IIRC in 2000 he was primarily a LOOGY.

Oh, and over at ChicagoSports.com Rahula Strohl discusses Buehrle as a pitcher with a chance to win 300.

"One name that I haven't seen, and a name that has been laughed at whenever I bring it up, should be obvious to all.

Excellent article on 300 wins...
...by Edward Thoma of The Mankato MN Free Press.

http://www.mankato-freepress.com/columns/local_story_218010529.html

Starts % Win %Loss %ND

Sutton 756 42.9 33.9 23.2
Carlton 709 46.4 34.4 19.2
Blyleven 685 41.9 36.5 21.6
Seaver 647 48 31.7 20.2

------

Clemens 690 50.4 25.8 23.8
Maddux 673 49.5 30.2 20.4
Glavine 635 45.7 30.0 24.3

------

Buehrle 201 46.3 32.3 21.4
Sabathia 185 45.8 30.3 25.9
Oswalt 177 55.3 26.6 18.1
Zambrano 129 45.7 24.8 29.5
Santana 100 55 19 26

"A couple of notes here: These numbers are all entering the 2007 season. For the younger pitchers, I only used their seasons as starting pitchers. Santana's numbers, therefore, are strictly from 2004-2006, his three seasons as a full-time starter. For the older guys, I just used their career numbers, ignoring the likelihood that, for example, Sutton got some decisions in his 18 career relief appearances.

"Conclusion: The no-decision rate for today's 20-somethings is slightly higher, but not drastically so -- and the increase comes not from their win percentage, but their loss percentage. The key thing for getting to (or near) 300 wins is making at least 650 starts. A pitcher who can do that has a shot."

So I recall a post from earlier that stated...
that other MLB fans hate Cubs fans because of our wallowing in pain or self-pity.....fine but people we ARE long suffering and so what are we supposed to do? Do we get more cred for being "eternal optimists" that are happy and hopeful no matter what? Then we get made fun of for being fans of those "loveable losers"!!! Maybe 100 years makes some a bit impatient.

by razzpunk on Aug 5, 2007 10:12 PM CDT reply actions

Right on the mark!
That is what my argument has been. We are, in my opinion, the best fans in the history of professional sports. Name another professional franchise fan base that has lost so often so consistently for nearly 100 years, and still support their team. Lood at the "support" the Pirates, Reds, and Marlins get now. And they have won multiple World Series!
Cubs fans are the best - that's why I am disappointed in Lee's comments.

The evidence here is clear

by Chanman25 on Aug 5, 2007 10:13 PM CDT reply actions

I am overly optimistic now!
I don't drink kool-aid and I am a pessimist by nature but here's four reasons why I am optimistic:
  1.  Did you see how Lou was so disgusted with Ohman he couldn't even look him in the face when he told him to give the intentional walk.  Ohman is in the friggin dog house, and good riddance to him.  Next to go is Scottie.
  2.  I think that Soriano being gone for a while will NOT hurt this team.  It will probably help it for now.  Bring on Pie, play Murton and Fontenot.  Good things will happen.  Did you see how Fontenot got that clutch double.    Sori needs a month or two off. :-)
  3.  I think Marquis pitched a good game.
  4.  Kerry Wood is back.  Maybe three good innings a week in the future.  That's great.  His stuff was fine.

"...and Fontenot takes a ball outside from Sosa Tom Glavine. The Cubs, in the midst of a great run here in the NL Central Tom Glavine as they jockey back and forth Tom Glavine with the Brewers Tom Glavine. Sosa looks in Glavine and delivers Tom Glavine. Fontenot rockets one down the Tom Glavine line and a run will score Glavine, as Fontenot Tom Glavine races to second with no throw Tom Glavine. And Fontenot Tom Glavine is in there with a double Tom Glavine to try to keep Tom Glavine from getting Tom Glavine win number Tom Glavine 300. Glavine.

The Cubs Tom Glavine trying to play spoiler tonight Tom Glavine against Tom Glavine and the Tom Glavine Mets Glavine.

And a Tom Glavine pitcher change Glavine as Sosa Tom Glavine comes out and we'll Tom Glavine take a break as the Tom Glavine pitcher change 300 new pitcherthree hundred Tom Glavinecomes in from the Tom Glavine bullpen. We'll be Tom Glavine back in a moment. Glavine."

An ugly, ugly game.

1)Tom Glavine has a hot wife.
2)Too many walks issued by our pitchers (again).
3)Kerry Wood looked pretty respectable. I'll be anxious to see how this turns out.
4)Will Ohman (still) needs to be taken out back and beaten with a sock full of nickels. His ERA over the last 7 games is 11.57. Why does he still have a job?
5)Still only 1 game out of the NL Central lead.
6)Our offense was less than impressive tonight. We need some bats. Now.
7)We're still not out of this thing.
8)I need a drink. See you tomorrow.

Your results may vary.

They are better than last year. That's not the ultimate job of the GM, especially when he can spend at will. The goal is to win the World Series.
Better than the team that lost 97 games? Mission accomplished. But even Bonifay could have done that.

Absolutely not
This team is a lot more balanced and resilient than a lot of the other ones we've seen around here recently.

I'm a big believer in self-fulfilling prophecies. If the attitude around this team really is to change, and change permanently, then everybody involved with it has to stop throwing in the towel at the first sign of adversity. That's been far too common in Cubs culture.

I don't think Lou is going to allow that to happen.

With other guys picking up the slack, the return of Pie and -- who knows, maybe a trade -- I think the Cubs can stay in this until Soriano gets back, most likely in about a month.

It comes down to whether or not our other bats step up. Which, oddly enough, they haven't the past week or so.

We also comes down to relief. It's too bad we couldn't pick up 1) a good LOOGY or 2) some long relief.

The short relief has generally been very good, minus a couple of players. The bats have been OK, but not where they should be.

It's starting to look like April right now.

I don't think losing Soriano kills us.

I wonder if there's a call up for left field to platoon with Murton?

I don't follow the minors as much as some.

Either way, I don't think the season is over. It's going to be tough, though.

We have a decent LOOGY
He just needs to start being used as a LOOGY only

Good point
Why isn't he then?

That is a good question, I think.

No doubt
and I don't know why Lou does that.  It's the only thing I don't understand about Lou.  Although I will say that it was probably best to scrap tonight's game than it was to bring out Marmol and Howry yet AGAIN and give them full strength for the Rockies series.  We have played seven games in a row and have seven more games this week.  I think Lou sometimes puts in Ohman when he wants to save Marmol and Howry.

Self-Answer
Situation serious but not hopeless.  At the very worst I see them still in it until the last week of the season.  Don't know if a significant waiver deal can be made but it would be nice seeing Murton and Pie getting their chance.

by SecondSon on Aug 5, 2007 10:48 PM CDT up reply actions

Losing
Lee, Ramirez, Z or Lilly would be far worse than losing Soriano.

If indeed the Cubs have to lose one of their key players for a stretch, he's the most expendable.

by Not Bruce Froemming on Aug 5, 2007 11:20 PM CDT up reply actions

His defense will be missed
he plays a really good left field.

by BleedCubbiePoo on Aug 5, 2007 10:45 PM CDT reply actions

Hmm. I haved mixed feelings
about this statement. He has a plus+ arm - teams are not running on him much any more.

But on the many times I have seen him at Wrigley, or on tv, I would say other than his harm - he is at or below average as a LF, imo.

His routes to the ball, the lack of hustle on occasion, decisions, positioning...I just don't think he'd be in the top 15 in baseball.

I'd be interested in seeing professional scouting reports on this topic.

Simple Solution
Call up Pie to take over CF and keep him there. His defense would be winning us games. I seriously think that Glavine's RBI wouldn't have occurred if Pie was handling the ball in CF.

Put Floyd in RF and shuffle Murton, Pagan, and Jones in LF.

Now that he is back, play Matt Murton!!

Yep. Agreed.

Agreed,,,,
The simple solution is Pie.. Is he hurt?  This outfield is miserable.  Watching people play positions that they aren't used to playing in a playoff race is awful.  Put someone in center field who is a natural CENTER FIELDER.  At least he may be able to make those in right and left field look a little better!!

What about the game
Nomar got hurt in 2005?  Or the game in 2004 where Hawkins blew the save to the Mets, or any of those games during the Cubs death spiral that year (like the one against the Reds where Prior was brilliant but the offense didn't score and they lost on a Kearns HR).  Let's try to put this in a little perspective.

by cubsbak on Aug 5, 2007 11:14 PM CDT up reply actions

Nomar!!
that was a bad game! I always thought to myself, if Dusty had waited one more day to switch Nomar and Lee's spot in the lineup, then history may have been completely different...

I was more than optimistic
I was confident. This team had what it took to take this division. I am now back down a peg to optimistic that it can happen, but confidence is waning. I still feel that this team has the ability to pull this out. Just gonna take people steppin up and pushing hard.

I am far more worried about our 3, 4, 5 starters than I am Soriano. His bat was nice, but it hardly ever won us a ball game. It changes the complete order of what kind of team this is. Speed/No Power at the top and supposed power, that has yet to show up, in the middle.

Hill, Marshall, and Marquis need to step up and deliver. They need to give quality innings, and act like they give a crap when they are out there. my dog shows more emotion when she is taking a crap than Marshall and Hill have shown this season.

by louslovechild on Aug 5, 2007 11:22 PM CDT reply actions

What can we do?
If Hendry is going to leave a positive legacy around here, he needs to do two things ASAP:
  1. Re-sign Zambrano.
  2. Bring up Soto and see if he can do the job.

by Ken Hubbs on Aug 5, 2007 11:28 PM CDT reply actions

Yeah
I'm not quite sure why Koyie Hill is the one up here and not Soto.  I think Kendall should catch Hill, Marquis, and Marshall with Soto catching Zambrano and Lilly.

Bandwagon Jumpers
I have a feeling that a lot of the folks who jumped on the bandwagon in the last three weeks will be jumping right back off now that Soriano is hurt. I'm  sure that several people will blame Hendry for this, perhaps somehow even McPhail.
Tell me Gerald, what is this "walk" you speak of?

by Ross on Aug 5, 2007 11:46 PM CDT reply actions

Not me at least
Alfonz is out a few weeks? OK, let's see them pick it up. I'd like to see Matty in LF at least for a few games. I still like him but don't think Lou does. I know last year is last year but Matty had the same BA against righties as Southpaws.

Put Alfonz on the 15-day, bring up Pie. Here's to seeing Theriot and Fontenot in the 1-2 spots.

Will Alfonz being out hurt? Yes. Will the Cubs tank? No. This ain't club Dusty anymore. Lou will not let that happen.

Who knows, maybe there will be a waiver pick-up that could help. Can't remember for sure if this was before or after the non-waiver deadline. But in '03 didn't the Cubs make an acquisition on the same day for a given player position as when someone got hurt?

ESPN game "coverage"
was the most pitiful "broadcast" of ANY sports telecast I have EVER seen!

Without taking a stopwatch to the "coverage", I would guesstimate that the actual live televised Cubs on the field plays totaled no more than 12 minutes!

Great news that TNT will cover the playoffs.

I will choose to just listen to WGN radio next time that the Effete Sorry Pitiful Notreally-a-network  hijacks a Cubs game.

i agree wholeheartedly
ESPN is horrible with broadcasts.  This is not because I love the cubs and would prefer chicago biased broadcasters.  But I was getting incredibly tired at the lack of game coverage and the amount of coverage for tom glavine's family that weren't even sitting in the same section.

by AJ on Aug 6, 2007 1:04 AM CDT up reply actions

Glavine was the story tonight.
300 wins is a major story, certainly bigger than the Cubs tonight. I have no quarrels with ESPN putting priorities where they belong. This wasn't our team's broadcast.

Disappointing homestand.
A good team is supposed to win at home against good teams in the middle of a pennant run. (Against bad teams, it's suppose to sweep or almost sweep.) At least we didn't lose too much grounds in the standings.

Several things worth noting:

1. The starting pitchers performed badly and forced the bullpen to overwork. Only Lilly did his job this week.

We discovered (or reaffirmed) several things about our bullpen:

a. Will Ohman is finished.
b. Scott Eyre isn't.
c. Ryan Dempster is not a good closer.
d. Bob Howry did a better job closing during our winning stretch.
e. Carlos Mármol is doing his job well. Lou better not overwork him.
f. There is hope about what Kerry Wood can do for this team. We still need to see if he can be consistently good.

  1. The worst news this week was Soriano's injury. This is serious. We lost our biggest HR threat and lead-off hitter during a pennant run. There is no player currently in the roster or the minors who can provide what we miss with Soriano out for a month. The Cubs will probably call Pie up but, face it you optimists and Pie-boosters, the guy hasn't shown that he can hit in the major leagues. And remember, the Cubs didn't do well the last time Soriano missed playing time.
  2. Cliff Floyd is just a shadow of his former self.
  3. On the positive side, Jacque Jones and Jason Kendall improved their offense.
  4. The Cubs have serious trouble against left-handers. A steady diet of them could eliminate the Cubs from contention, if Soriano's absence doesn't do it first.
  5. The lack of power in this lineup hampered the Cubs this week. With Soriano's absence that deficiency is magnified.
Many people posted here tonight that if Soriano's injury costs the Cubs the pennant then this team wasn't that good after all. Well, maybe it never was. Many of us warned about the lack of power, even during the good times. Slapping singles can only get you so far. We're going to miss now the big bat we didn't try to get before the trade deadline.

Is the season over? Of course not. After all, the Cubs are only a game back in the standings and the other teams have weaknesses too. It all depends on how management and the players react. However, Soriano's absence just when the schedule gets tougher, the inconsistency of our starters and our closer, and a losing homestand against good teams aren't good signs.

Regardless, let's hope for the best and cheer our team.

by Fraggin Judge on Aug 6, 2007 3:49 AM CDT reply actions

Just want to add
lookingat the Brewers site, they are really a bunch of hacks.  Toasting Soriano's injury is a real classy move from such a sensitive crowd that bans people who speak poorly of the Brewers.

Oh well, hopefully Lou's comments about potential moves doesn't just mean bringing up Pie.

MMMMM...Hebrew National

I really try
to not be negative on our players but thinking about ten or so more starts from Marquis makes me break out in hives. Just the thought of Ohman makes me nauseous. I don't understand why Lou leaves him in there when it's obvious Will doesn't have it. He sat Erye for a long period of time can't he do that with Ohman too?

It seems to me that this team works hard to step it up when there have been injuries. I think they will be ok.

It was nice to see Wood pitch last night. I just wish it had been CSN or WGN doing the game when he came in. There wouldn't have been the mistake of thinking the ovation was for Glavine.

I have been a big supporter of Len & Bob all year and after last night of ESPN I really appreciate Len & Bob. If either of you are reading this site I love you guys.

I love this team!!!!!
