Waiver trade deadline question

I know we're past the waiver trade deadline.

So if I'm correct waivers go in standings order.

So wouldn't it behoove Jim Hendry to try and get something done to help offseat Soriano's loss right away while the teams most likely to block a move are ahead of the Cubs esp. the Brewers?

And timing is everything.  I wish this had happened before July 31st because maybe a trade that would have seemed too much then would look good now.

But I think the Cubs can overcome this.

Well, of course it would.
But it's not as easy to do as just to say so.

Interesting thought...
But evidently, Jim Edmonds has offered to remain open on any trades that the Cards might include him in. He's a 10-5 guy, so he can still veto a trade and he is still owed a little bit of money. I know the Cards probably wouldn't help the Cubs, but Edmonds wouldn't be a bad waiver addition, and could provide leadership and a decent bat during this stretch run. Just an idea.

Decent?
Jim Edmonds is hitting .237/.314/.377.

I am not really sure how that is anything remotely "decent."  He really wouldn't be an upgrade over Jock Jones.

Agreed that he wouldn't be an upgrade for JJ?
I hope we are JUST referring to his bat...

Edmonds...
Made a career out of bad jumps.  he is a perfect example of ESPN over hyping a player and making everyone believe he was an amazing outfielder.  He is good outfielder, but alot of the diving catches he made in his career were because of bad jumps.

The flip side to this is...
...the Cardinals are delusional when it comes to figuring out who's contending and who isn't, and they have waiver priority over us.

Forget Edmonds
his bat has really slowed down and the legs and other injuries have made him a shell of his former self...we'd be much better off with Pie in CF even if he makes some "rookie mistakes'' and drives us crazy with bad AB's...Edmonds is a K machine himself now who is lucky to hit .250 with spotty power.

someone said...
that it was the reverse standings order from 2006.  Is that correct!?!?  That would really benefit us.  We could get anybody that we wanted.

by Ghost of Fred Merkle on Aug 6, 2007 1:56 PM CDT reply actions

It is reverse order of current standings...
the draft was reverse order of 2006 standings, not the waiver order.

Just looking for opinions...
I agree that Edmonds has definitely slowed down and wouldn't be an enormous addition. Can anyone explain to me why Pie is an extremely untouchable young player, but is not being given a second chance in the bigs?

by gacubbie20 on Aug 6, 2007 2:14 PM CDT reply actions

Because
he projects as a potential 5-tool player (perhaps the only one in the Cub system right now), but is not totally ready for prime-time at this point in his career. His batting eye is not quite there yet for the big leagues, which is why he will get some more time in the minors to work on his hitting.

His defense is there, just not the hitting. when that comes around--look out!

If you think you've seen it all...just wait!

Waiver question
Which players DO NOT need to clear waivers in order to be traded.

Say Adam Dunn was waived and the Cubs claimed him. The Reds would likely want some young, cheap talent back. But wouldn't the other teams claim any young, cheap talent. Is it only guys on the 25-man roster, or 40-man that don't need to clear?

edmonds
does anyone really think the cards/cubs would actually make a trade. how about willy mo pena?there,s no room in boston for this guy.let,s get him.imagine an outfielder with power

by NOMAR on Aug 7, 2007 8:35 AM CDT reply actions

Power?
Pena is hitting .218 with a SLG of .388. That's about what Cliff Floyd's SLG is. No thanks.

Except that
Pena never gets on base.

The guy is a punk.  Please don't sign him.
