Open Thread: Cubs vs. Astros, Tuesday 8/7, 7:05 CT

UPDATE [2007-8-7 17:12:32 by Al]: This just in! Will Ohman has been optioned to Iowa and Sean Gallagher recalled. All I can say is, wow.

The Yahoo preview of tonight's game focuses on the wrong thing:

The Chicago Cubs struggled offensively in their first game without injured outfielder Alfonso Soriano...

Chicago (58-53) didn't respond well in its first game without Soriano, managing only five hits while striking out 13 times in a 2-1, 10-inning loss.

That wasn't all missing Soriano -- no one hit last night, and it's not as if Soriano doesn't strike out, either; his 95 K's lead the team, and by a considerable margin (Derrek Lee is second with 79). Last night the Cubs ran into a pitcher who's been almost unhittable in his home park.

Other notes: the Cubs' 36-22 record since June 3 is still best in the NL; their +53 run differential still leads the NL; the Cubs have hit 236 doubles (including Ryan Theriot's two last night). That's 2nd in the NL and on pace to break the club record for doubles in a season, 340, set in 1931.

 Today's Starting Pitchers
Sean Marshall
 S. Marshall
Cubs
vs. Woody Williams
 W. Williams
Astros
5-5 W-L 5-12
3.86 ERA 5.37
50 SO 69
23 BB 36
7 HR 25
vs. Hou -- vs. Cubs
Woody Williams is 3-9, 4.42 in 18 games (17 starts) lifetime vs. the Cubs. But what is freakish is his mark against them this year:
vs. Cubs: 2 G, 13 IP, 0-1, 2.77 vs. others: 22 G, 126 IP, 5-11, 5.64
Well now, that doesn't make a whole lot of sense, does it? There are four Cubs who usually eat Williams' pitches for breakfast, lunch, dinner and late-night snacks: Aramis Ramirez (13-for-43, 2 doubles, 2 HR, .302/.333/.488), Derrek Lee (10-for-31, 3 doubles, .323/.400/.419), Cliff Floyd (10-for-27, 2 HR, .370/.393/.630), and, most shockingly, Jason Kendall (18-for-35, 2 doubles, a HR, .514/.553/.657).

So let's go and light up the Juice Box tonight. Williams may be late arriving, as he has to save some puppies, feed some hungry Houstonians at a nearby homeless shelter, take tickets at one of the turnstiles, and cut the ballpark grass into one of those wacky patterns before his start.

Sean Marshall got pounded his last time out, raising his ERA from 3.10 to 3.86. However, on the road this year he's 3-1, 2.60, and has a 3.00 ERA in 3 lifetime starts vs. Houston (although a 1-2 record). Chris Burke hits him hard (5-for-7 lifetime with a HR).

Another cable-only extravaganza is also available at the Mediacenter.

Not yet.
Either I, or someone else, will certainly post them when they're available.

Lets take...
some pitches tonight and try to work the count - instead of whaling at every pitch.

Lets get back to the basics.

That would be a nice change
but it looks like they are going through one of those periods where they may be a little mentally fried, and everybody is trying to do too much.

I don't know what will happen tonight, but I have a feeling this is going to be a difficult road trip for the Cubs and Brewers both.

Probably mentally AND physically fried - long games and travel in the wee hours...

I am expecting a much better show tonight.

Woody Williams' actually visited

Soriano
if cubs skid and fans starting pointing to sorianos injury...here is what I have to say:

OBP .336
BB 24
K 95
RBI 42
SB 18, CS 5
HR 18 - 14 of which were solo shots
RISP .268
late innings of close games .205

So exactly which of these stats are going to be missed?...the 4 to 1 strikout to walk ratio?  the solo home runs early in games? the whopping 42 RBI?  the 18/23 SB as a lead off hitter?

but ask many people and they will tell you he hits 300 w/ 18 HRs...what a joke.

$10 mil as a #5 hitter...maybe. $17mil in the lead off spot...don't want.

If the org continues to baby him because he "feels confortable leading off" it will be a long 8 years I am afraid.

That said, the good news is that as long as the cubs stay mentally tough, the injury should have little impact (as sad as that may be for $17mil)

Also in 29 AB's leading off Theriot has an OBP of .438 vs. Soriano's .343 (albeit in  171 ABs)

Leading Off
I agree that he shouldn't be leading off and I hope that an adjustment will be made once he comes back but I will miss Soriano's presence.

I'm not down on him.  He is what he is and at this point he's worthy of respect considering that the team climbed on his back when he got hot in June.

He'll be hot again in the future too.  However, now is the time for the team to pick him up.  Let's go Cubs and let's get it done tonight!

There's always next year.

by BJ Simpson on Aug 7, 2007 6:13 PM CDT up reply actions

Uh
Did you ever think he might add a certain confidence to the team?

His .297 average is nothing to scoff at either, same with his 74 runs.  Those will be missed.

by wjblol on Aug 7, 2007 9:16 PM CDT up reply actions

Yeah
Funny how the poster failed to mention those.  You would think it's intentional or something...

by IllinoisCubs on Aug 7, 2007 11:07 PM CDT up reply actions

Plus...
he makes the pitchers throw differently not only at him but also at those behind hin in the lineup.

Besides, you really think that those subbing for him (Fontenot, so far) have better numbers? Yes, Soriano shouldn't have been leading off but to say that there's nothing missing with his absence is being in denial.

by Fraggin Judge on Aug 7, 2007 11:35 PM CDT up reply actions

I know the term "must win"...
...is often debated here. So let's just say the Cubs really NEED to win this game and tomorrow's as well.

Failing to do so would mean their second series loss in a row. And you'd have to look all the way back to the 7/27-7/29 series against the Reds for a series win.

Here's to hoping Marshall goes deep into the game and the offense hits a few deep into the rows of seats beyond the outfield walls. It's time for the team to get back into the habit of winning.

Go Cubs!

by daver on Aug 7, 2007 4:59 PM CDT reply actions

"all the way back"
7/27-7/29 is not THAT long ago... :) BUT I agree. Cubs really do need to win tonight. If not to stay alive in the pennant race but at least to be able to show that they can put up wins with a guiy not named Ted or Carlso pitching.

by Willgly on Aug 7, 2007 5:02 PM CDT up reply actions

Woody Williams has thrown two no-hitters
in the same game.  I also heard that in one game he let the first two batters of every inning get on base just to get 9 triple plays in one game.

Neyer summarized
Losing Soriano for the month will cost the Cubs between one to two games, depending on the replacements.

Patterson and Murton might make a nice platoon to mitigate the loss, as long as Piniella/Hendry don't panic the first time one of them goes 0 for 3.

by Josh Timmers on Aug 7, 2007 6:40 PM CDT up reply actions

Oh
And a snarky comment about how the Cubs still have a great chance as long as Claudio Vargas is a Brewer.

by Josh Timmers on Aug 7, 2007 6:42 PM CDT up reply actions

More faulty logic.
Neyer makes the argument based solely on statistics and concludes that since Soriano will be out only a month he'll "only" cost the Cubs two games.

Well, first of all, in a close race 2 games may be the difference between going to the playoffs or watching them on TV.

Second, Soriano's injury is in the leg that gives power to his swing. He also needs to be healthy to run the bases and patrol the outfield. It's to be expected that when Soriano returns that leg will be tendered. It takes rest for more than a month to be 100% healthy after a muscle tear although  he will be able to play. Neyer didn't take into account the effect of that injury on Soriano's power and speed once he comes back. How many games should I toss because of that?

Again, people, this is serious. I see everyone underestimating this thing and meanwhile we're already drifting away in the Wild Card race. We're still in the division race because Milwaukee and St. Louis are playing poorly too. After all, this is the Comedy Central.

But even in that mediocre division, I'm afraid that if Hendry doesn't acquire some hitter soon (and that means before Monday) our hopes may be over due to a torn quad.

by Fraggin Judge on Aug 7, 2007 11:46 PM CDT up reply actions

The offense will bounce back
in todays game. I have a feeling we will see an 8 run game tonight.

Also, does anyone else think MLB changed the ball this off-season? Or is the low home run total all the drug policy?

Response
"why do you even want him?" Need Home Runs. Need runs. Fast.

If that's not the best option out there (and you're probably right on that, Al) then we need to get that hitter. The question is, Is Hendry willing and able to pay the price?

It was mentioned that someone in the minors
might got a couple of spot starts.  Gallagher can also be used in true long relief in case a starter's gone after a couple of innings.  Right now they just burn up the whole pen when that happens.

Ohman as a pure one batter LOOGY might have been fine.  His confidence is probably shot right now though.  Lou didn't exactly use him in  the smartest way every time out, that's for sure.

Aram
I like Aram, his walk off against the brew crew earlier this year was probably the sweetest clutch hit of the season... but what's with all the sitting?  I know he has a "leg injury" which has apperently been bothering him for the last 2 YEARS, but hes not exactly 50 years old.  With soarino out we could use the extra power bat.  I am bummed this guy needs to sit more than cliff floyd.

by OCcubsnation on Aug 7, 2007 6:15 PM CDT up reply actions

His knee
is only at about 80%, so while the sitting is precautionary, it's necessary if we want to have Rammy around for the duration of the year. It's not the quad problems he's has the past couple of years, but a pretty bad knee sprain he got in Milwaukee.

A-Ram...
it looked to me like he had a bit of trouble last night after he ran out a grounder early in the game (he looked like he pulled up a bit right after he ran by first).  The obnoxious Astros announcers were always talking to themselves anyway and the lousy FSN/Houston cameras already cut away to the crowd, but I am just telling you what I saw.

So that may be the reason for him sitting tonight.  Nothing serious but just resting the knee.  It may also explain feeble swings the rest of the night.

So many of those pitcher/batter splits...
...are the relics of small sample sizes; the rest of them are often just about as meaningless. (Bonds versus Maddux exemplifies this well; they're both exceedingly different players now than they were in their primes, and so much of their past history isn't as relevant as the media hypes it up to be.)

Aramis Ramirez hits everybody hard, given enough at-bats to work out sample sizes, I would wager. He's good. And Woody Williams? He's... well, I won't say it. But you get the idea.

Ohman
I kind of figured he'd win the clinching game of the world series for the Cubs.

Wouldn't it be perfect that although it is spelled differently the Cubs world series winning pitcher was named Omen?

I just want the Cubs to top the Bears NFC Title Game as my highlight of the year.

I hope Ohman

Hope you get a win tonight Sean. Go get em.

Will Ohman is what I like to think of...
...as an "AL reliever," the pitching equivelent of the DH. A simpler, more common way of looking at him is as a traditionally LOOGY -- note the key word in LOOGY is "one out." Lou has been trying to use him as a middle reliever part out of necessity and part out of stubbornness. It's sorta the inverse of when Dusty kept trying to use Remlinger as a LOOGY when he was really a middle reliever.

Remember Hawk?
LaTroy Hawkins.  Thats who omen reminded me of the other night.  At least with the walks, not so much serving up waste high home run balls every 3rd pitch.

by OCcubsnation on Aug 7, 2007 6:35 PM CDT up reply actions

Ohman is a classic LOOGY.
He gets out lefties. That's pretty much all there is to him. Now, admittedly I'm not the biggest fan of the world of bullpen specialization, but it's the world we generally live in.

It's like trying to use a hammer to drive screws. Once, twice, in a pinch, you can be forgiven. But if you don't eventually go out and get a screwdriver... well, it's not the hammer's fault that you're ruining the boards.

Left Field - by the numbers...
Thought this was interesting - from today's Cincinnati Enquirer:

WAY OUT IN LEFT FIELD
Here's a look at the left fielders in the NL Central by stats and salary:

Name            Club            Avg.     HR    RBI    OBP    Slug.     OPS     Salary
Adam Dunn     Reds    .262     30     73    .363     .551     .918     $10.5M
Alfonso Soriano Cubs    .297     18     42    .336     .511     .848     $10M
Carlos Lee           Astros    .298     23     90    .353     .531     .883     $11.5M
Geoff Jenkins     Brewers    .269     14     45    .341     .483     .824     $7.3M
Jason Bay          Pirates    .260     17     71    .335     .440     .775     $3.5M
Chris Duncan     Cards    .285     20     59    .376     .540     .920     $400K

If players had standings like teams, I'd say Soriano is tied for 4th with Bay, just ahead of Jenkins

by ballhawk on Aug 7, 2007 6:34 PM CDT reply actions

LFs
Assuming you are just factoring in the baseball and not the money, then I think Soriano is right at the top of that list.  Maybe #2 behind Lee.  He is superior defensively to pretty much all of 'em.  (I don't know what kind of D Jason Bay plays.)  Meanwhile, his O is not that far behind.

Duncan is not playing against lefties, lowering his worth.  Dunn is atrocious defensively, and slow on the base paths.  I'd go Lee, Soriano, Dunn, Jenkins, Duncan, Bay.

Gallagher
Piniella has talked twice in the last week about wanting a long man in the bullpen, and specifically mentioning Gallagher as the perfect man for the job.

While Ohman's recent performance didn't help any, I'm betting this was as much Lou wanting Gallagher as needing to get rid of Ohman.

On all Cubs broadcasts at home too.  I call it the booby cam.  My wife and I chuckle about this all the time.  The best thing that I've witnessed in person several times sitting in the upper deck box sections at Wrigley is that the camera guys purposely scope the bleachers for women during commercial breaks - zooming in when they find one that they like.

Then, once the action starts, it's back to normal coverage.

As crazy as it sounds
I feel like the club's mentality probably mirrors what the majority of its fans think.  That is to say, there was a huge stretch there that even when losing the majority of this site was still positive, and I bet that was pretty representative of the clubhouse/dugout.  But somewhere since the 9th inning of that Phillies game, its just been completely different, feels like everyone is expecting the worse and expecting the fall out.  Now i'm not saying if we changed our mindset things would change in the clubhouse, just that they follow the same ups and downs.  With this in mind, we're tied against a bad team and it feels like we are losing, even if we pull this out, people are still going to complain.  E-pat in three at bats went from promising to a bust, and i guess now we are losing, I dunno just venting. but this team is beatable even if we are trailing.

But we blew them.  Game's not over, but we coulda had this game in hand.  And I know it is probably blasphemous, but I think our problem was taking too many pitches in RISP situations.  A walk is as good as a hit when the bases are empty, but not when you have RISP.  We had 3 walks with RISP, and if they were hits we woulda had 4 or more runs, instead of 1.

Of course, maybe if
some of those games in April or May had gone the Cubs' way, you could say the same thing.

by Not Bruce Froemming on Aug 7, 2007 8:57 PM CDT up reply actions

The Cubs played well below their
projections, this has been discussed before.
They finally came back, close to where they should be.

But that was with a healthy club, for the most part.

I'm sorry, losing a player like Soriano hurts. To say losing a guy that you depended on to be a big stick hurts. Now, everybody's pressing.

This could be a road trip that pushes them 4-5 games back. If they can win tomorrow, that's impressive. (Especially against Oswalt. And, we'll see if Z can be the stopper they need.)  They are not coming back tonight -- anybody that follows the game knows miracles happen rarely. The Cubs came back a few times, certainly -- in June, and July -- but that team was sizzling.

Not now. Therefore, any comeback would be more than a miracle this evening. This is a slumping team, and one can hope a game is salvaged tomorrow, and they split in Colorado -- and the staff doesn't get ravaged up there.

If they return to Chicago only about 3 games back, consider that to be very fortunate.

I try to be as optimstic as possible, but this type of performance isn't going to win. One has to be realistic, too.  I (and others) have said earlier they cannot continue to play .700 ball. That was a great stretch, and cooling-off was inevitable. However, they MUST play .600 ball for the rest of thes season to win the division, or the Wild Card.

They have to. If the Cubs cannot right the ship on this road trip, they WILL have to play .700 ball to win. And that, my friends -- is going to be very tough.

The Brewers may be young, but they are talented.

by San Diego Smooth Jazz Man on Aug 7, 2007 9:10 PM CDT up reply actions

Seriously some of you guys are ridiculous
I hate the Red Sox, but in 2004 one place where i respect there fans way more than half the people who follow the cubs is they didnt give up after two bad games.  Living in Boston, I saw that there ridiculous slogan of Keep the Faith was actually carried out and that meant they had hope no matter how dismal the times including trailing 3-0 to the Yankees in the ALCS, and yet losing two games in August all of a sudden means not only we lost this series but apprently the season is over. Its no wonder so many prospects bust in our system becuase the second they dont perform some fans who cant see passed their first performance start to boo them. For once, look past today and yesterday, we jsut lost a big figure in our lineup so a little slump afterwards is expected honestly grow a pair and dont bitch if one or two things dont go our way.

by INWes44 on Aug 7, 2007 8:57 PM CDT reply actions

yeah about that
unfortunately im already in boston, but thanks for the comment

by INWes44 on Aug 7, 2007 9:00 PM CDT up reply actions

This is dangerously close
to Dusty Baker's line of thinking. Don't boo us, said Dusty...'we're trying.'

I will follow this team, no matter what. However, one does have to use a critical eye at times. And, I'm not meaning the usual "Jones sucks," "Dumpster," lines. That's crap, that juvenile. That's not fitting discussion. That's for teen-agers.

But right now, there's a collective slump going on, and a lot of it HAS to be that the Soriano injury is causing EVERYBODY to try to take manners into their own hands. The press is on, the collar's tight.

If this team is good -- if it's a winner -- the ship rights itself by the time they get home.

If this entire series goes down the tubes, and they lose 3 of 4 in Colorado -- it's going to be rough. That's all I'm saying.

I'm being realistic. I've been accused of drinking the 'kool-aid' many times, but it's out there to see. The good times of June and July have give way to the dog-days.

Again, if this team is good -- and it's played well on the road -- we'll know by the 12th, if this team still has a pulse. Fall back by 5 games -- wow. That could mean the Cardinals are back in it, just by playing .500 ball.

Wood allowed 2 runners to score, and Lou allowed them to score by bringing the INF in twice.

by CubFaninNY on Aug 7, 2007 9:00 PM CDT up reply actions

Game-turning events can be at any time
Williams, as I said early struggles a lot at this, the end of career. Look at his record. However, if you let him off the hook early -- as the Cubs did, TWICE -- he gets stronger, and -- apparently -- gains confidence. Therefore, those two innings where thre Cubs could only punch home 1 run, with the bases loaded, mind you -- turned the game.

If the Cubs score in both of those innings, Williams is O-U-T. He's gone by the third, if the Cubs get those runs home.

This becomes a different game, Marshall has a lead, a cushion -- not every pitch has to be perfect. The kid now starts to think he MUST be perfect.

And, I also wish Kerry Wood's arm would fall off so he never comes to the mound -- ever again, and we can all get over this guy.

Enough punishment from this guy. I'm sorry his career is over. He's a millionaire. Go home and have fun for the rest of your life.

by San Diego Smooth Jazz Man on Aug 7, 2007 8:58 PM CDT reply actions

I am just sad. Not mad. Sad.
Thought we had something going. Not to say they cant get out of this funk, but it is sad. They are pressing, and to be really honest, they arent good enough to press and get away with it. They are scrappers, who just cant pull it together now.

How many times do you see Mark DeRosa strike out swinging with the bases loaded and less than 2 outs. He has done that twice in two nights.

Just sad.

Too many stiffs
You cannot and will not win games with Jones, Murton, Patterson and Cedeno as reasonably regular guys in the lineup.  Not only are they not very good hitters, they are awful baseball players.  Patterson gets a pass because he's in his first week, but his high fastball approach is way too similar, small sample size and all, to his brother.

And for the record, Wood is in the high 80's tonight.  He's mopup and nothing more.  Sorry to say it, but that's what he is.  The last guy in the pen.

And lastly, Piniella's inexplicable decision to bring the infield in in a tie game...in the 6th inning...was atrocious.

To not appreciate Ron's passion
you are missing what being a Cub fan is all about. To not dream about how Ron will be in that booth the day the Cubs win the WS, you are not a true Cub fan.  We all dream of that day for Ron.

What makes listening to Ron so great is before Pat even describes the play, you hear the sound of the bat and then you hear Ron's excitement or grunt.  It makes the game that much more fun.

If you don't get that, you didn't live through '69 like so many of us did.  I have pity on you.

No, I don't think the season is over and yes, I still feel like this team has a shot at winning the division. But they are playing shitty baseball right now and it is depressing to say the least. Lets get to 88 wins
I think that will win the Central by 3.
But this team is hitting with runners in scoring position like they did in April and May,
Jones, Floyd and now Lee is killing us in clutch spots, bases juiced with no outs and score one run.
Take away the Cubs big inning of 6 runs against the Mets, and the bats have been Artic cold
Facing Oswalt, goodness.

by Johnny Callison was a Cub on Aug 7, 2007 10:09 PM CDT reply actions

I agree.
I think 88 wins takes the NL Central...but the hitting with RiSP has to improve. Tonight's game was lost in the first inning, when you've got a pitcher who's walked 3 of the first 4, walked ina run, no less, left the bases loaded with 0 out, and the Cubs get 1 run. That was huge gor Williams and the 'Stros. They've got to get focused like they wer in June and get those guys in from scoring position. It's not going to take much to win the Cnetral and once the Cubs get to the playoffs, it's a new season!

It is a distinct possibility that will be swept by the Astros - it will be 0-0 in the 9th inning and somehow they will blow it in the 9th.

Back For A Minute to OMAN
Just read the comments by Ohman after the Cubs shipped him to the pig farms.
What really pisses me off and I'm sure most of the people on this venue are the offerings made by Ohman about his shoulder.
Listen you dung head, the Cubs are trying to take the cake here. We all could care less about what you have and have not done. If you were having a problem with your shoulder -- even a minor one -- "tell the trainer and the manager and get your ass on the DL." Now you are using this problem as an excuse for your crappy performances over the past month? We need someone to get people out -- not some lame shouldered lob slinger who all of a sudden blames his problems on a bad arm. If you are really a team player, you would have stepped up and told management the problems you were experiencing.
After this self-excusing presentation, this poor excuse for a Cub and a contributing teammate should never be allowed to cross the white lines again at Wrigley Field unless he is a member of the opposition.

While We Are At It --
Look at waiver deals -- look at other left-handed hitters at AA and AAA. Find someone who can take the spots of JJ and Cliff.
Okay with Cliff as a pinch hitter until Ward can return. But Cliff is cooked -- done -- awful -- for too long.
As for JJ -- he had his five or six games -- but he is a liability. He can't drive the ball -- is nothing better than poor in the OF -- and if you do not think that Pie would be an improvement over JJ I wonder why -- and don't tell me that Pie is overmatched. Would you say that JJ is not?
I'll take Pie over JJ from today until forever. It is time to dump the underachiever and give the kid the rest of the season.

Brewers look to have blown it
Colorado winning 8-3.  Two out with two on in the bottom of the 8th.  Matt H. just hit a 420 foot out.

Maybe this was meant to be
Maybe we needed to get this slump out of the way now, reach rock bottom and get pissed an charge back. At least the Brewers keep losing to help us out along the way

Brewer 'Pen...
...keeps working.

Their starter can't make it more than 5+, forcing their bullpen to throw 73 pitches, and they're still not out of the 8th.  Me like.

Lee is still batting .320
So Lee is a good and valuable hitter to have.  Now we need a power hitter...how about Bonds?  He has 756 homers, and doesn't need to eat, just to take shots.

by zevkalman on Aug 7, 2007 10:55 PM CDT up reply actions

Bonds just hit 756.

756
Thank goodness that's over with.  In about a week, we'll be able to tune in a sports show without immediately hearing the words "Barry Bonds".
Wrigley Field will be heaven in two thousand seven!

Wow.
I really don't know how to feel...let me say, I'm just glad it's over.

Rockies have won 9 home series in a row
(if they can hang on to their 8 run lead). They have some very good players, but the Cubs can come in and put a stop to that.

I blame Michael Barrett
for the Cubs slump.

He is stealing signs and emailing them to the opposition from whatever city he's in.

It is AUGUST, and we're STILL IN IT! YES!
