Open Thread: Cubs vs. Cardinals, Monday 9/10, 2:20 CT

The best-laid plans...

As most of you know I am a member of the Directors Guild of America, and several times a year I go to New York for meetings of their Eastern Directors Council, of which I have been a member since 1999.

So when a meeting was scheduled for tonight -- September 10 -- I thought, "Great! Right in the middle of a Cubs road trip, and an off-day, too!"

Well, not any more it's not an off-day, after the rescheduling of the August 19 rainout for this afternoon. So I'm posting to tell you that I'm off to NYC this afternoon and won't be at today's game. And guess what? Rain is approaching the Chicago area, and just might arrive in time for this afternoon's 2:20 pm CT start. Another rainout would really put a wrench in the scheduling for the rest of this month, as the Cardinals do not have another off day. I cannot imagine either team, or the MLBPA, approving playing two doubleheaders in St. Louis this weekend, in case of a postponement today. They'd have to hold it till the end of the season and play it then, if necessary.

 Today's Starting Pitchers
Ted Lilly
 T. Lilly
Cubs
vs. Joel Piñiero
 J. Piñiero
Cardinals
14-7 W-L 5-3
3.85 ERA 4.28
149 SO 43
51 BB 21
24 HR 10
vs. StL -- vs. Cubs
This pitching matchup is a rematch of the one that occurred three weeks ago, on Monday, August 20 game at Wrigley Field, a game where Lilly threw OK, Piniero threw better, and the Cardinals won 6-4.

So, lazily, I am going to simply repost what I said about these two pitchers that day (with some minor updates):

Joel Piñiero was throwing exclusively in relief for the Red Sox -- 31 appearances covering 34 innings, with a 5.03 ERA. (The stats in the box above are his combined AL & NL stats for this year.) Since coming to the Cardinals he's made three starts, one bad one, one very good one, and one decent one, totalling a 2-1 record with a 2.84 ERA. The only time he had faced the Cubs before August 20 was when he was a Mariner, on June 7, 2002, a game the Cubs won. He has faced very few of the 2007 Cubs, but one who hits him hard is the currently-hot Jacque Jones (.355/.355/.581, 11-for-31, 4 doubles, 1 HR). [Jones, of course, proceeded to go 0-for-4 vs. Piñiero on August 20.]

Ted Lilly lost to St. Louis on April 20 at Wrigley Field, though he gave up only two ER in 7 IP, and beat them in St. Louis last month, giving them only one run in 7 IP. Juan Encarnacion has gone 7-for-14 in his career vs. Lilly.

Of course, at that time I couldn't have anticipated that Encarnacion, the only player I mentioned regarding his stats vs. Lilly, would suffer the freak and horrifying injury ten days later, when he was hit by a foul ball while standing in the on-deck circle. Encarnacion will have surgery later this month; that link is mainly about the injury to Chris Duncan, who may be out for the year due to a "sports hernia". Now that doesn't make me unhappy, as Duncan hits the Cubs hard -- lifetime .301/.358/.548 with 5 HR in 73 AB. As for Encarnacion, my best wishes to him for a complete recovery.

The only TV coverage today is on WGN; no St. Louis channel is carrying the game. However, it was on my Comcast EI list, so check there or today's Mediacenter link.

Does anyone want to win this division?
I do! I do!

Can't say the same for any of the players that will be on the field today.

I do too.
And I think there are thirty-something players in Cub uniforms who do, too. Let's hope they start showing it this afternoon.

When I looked at the schedule in April
And saw the lowly Pirates, Reds, and Marlins in September. I knew we'd have a rough go at it...

A lot of people want a winner
I know I want to see a winner!!! The guy who delievered my groceries from Peapod this morning saw my Cubs cellphone on the table and started talking about how frustrating it is to be a Cubs fan right now. We talked about how badly we both want these guys to win this division!

I try and stay away from it, because I don't have the energy for the ups and downs, but I just can't. Please win today and sweep the 'Stros.

Batting Practice today?
Is there any way to find out if the Cubs and/or Cardinals will be taking batting practice on the field today?

by chipwood23 on Sep 10, 2007 10:23 AM CDT   0 recs

it would seem that both teams
Are in dire need of ANY type of practice.

Very true
No doubt both teams need the batting practice.  My friends and I are sitting in the bleachers today but we don't want to arrive as early if there is no BP.

by chipwood23 on Sep 10, 2007 10:29 AM CDT to parent up   0 recs

My guess is...
... there may be no BP at all, with the threat of rain and the fact that both teams had to fly in from out of town, the Cardinals probably not arriving till midnight.

Don't take my word for it, though, call the Cubs to find out.

My morale has been in the gutter...
...since Dempster's implosion against the Dodgers on Friday. I was in "emotional damage control mode" all weekend -- not actively avoiding watching or listening to the games, but not going out of my way to do so either. And I did my best to stay away from media accounts of the games -- even after Big Z's uplifting win on Saturday. I even took a break from BCB! (Sorry, Al.)

I guess my biggest fear right now is that this team is simply regressing back to its early season form, with bullpen implosions (see Dempster, Wood) and boneheaded plays (see bad baserunning, Jacque Jones second inning error yesterday) winning the day, so to speak, and the Brewers' ridiculous offense mowing down any team that gets in its path.

I haven't given up hope, but the prospect of four games against the hated Redbirds, who seem perched to peck out our hearts, and another series in Houston, where the Cubs were swept last month, doesn't exactly fill me with confidence.

I just hope the guys sitting in the home team dugout at Wrigley Field today don't feel the same way.

Go Cubs!!!

Man, you really must be out of sorts.
Dempster's implosion was on Thursday. And we have five games with St. Louis (including today).

The turnaround starts TODAY.

re: Man, you really must be out of sorts.
Argh! I worked from home on Friday so it felt like Thursday was the last day of the workweek. And I did forget about that second makeup game with the Cards.

But, yes, I am out of sorts...worried, frustrated, saddened but, as I mentioned, not hopeless.

Dear god...
If the Cardinals finish .500 or better, LaRussa is definitely the NL coach of the year. What hasn't happened to that club this year? And he's still got them in the mix at seasons' end.

Beautiful day in West LA
68 degrees right now and not a cloud in the sky.

68 degrees and sunny.  I am going to channel this sunshine to all of you and hopefully it can find its way to the 3rd base dugout.  We REALLY do need this win today.

The RedBird announcers sounded so down yesterday when their 9th inning rally fell short against the D'Backs and they got swept.  A victory by the Cubs would go a long way towards putting the Redbirds one foot into the grave.

These are the kind of games we have not taken advantage of all year (the STEP ON THEIR THROAT GAMES).  Let's do it this time!

GO CUBS!!

Prince Fielder...he is neither.

If rained out
just wondering if the game is put off until the season is over what this could do to our rotation? It's looking like an extra day off wouldn't hurt. Might help the Cards a lot!
This is Harry Carray, goodbye from Wrigley Field and So Long Everybody.

by mrcubsfan on Sep 10, 2007 11:20 AM CDT   0 recs

If the Game Is Rained Out...
... it will likely be pushed until the end of the season, especially seeing that the Cards are playing straight through.

The only way the game is not played is if it does not add any significance.  Doesn't look like it is headed that direction any time soon.

A rain out today may also help Piniella make the decision of what he wants to do with Big Z (e.g., having him pitch Thursday vs. Houston or the opener against the Cards on Friday).

All I hope is that if the game will get postponed, call it before anyone pitches.  I'd hate to see Lilly miss a turn...

by initram on Sep 10, 2007 11:38 AM CDT to parent up   0 recs

If it is rained out...
...which doesn't appear to be right now, it probably won't even be scheduled for an end-of-the-season matchup unless there is playoff implications.

The Birds had that scenario last season. They only played 161 games. If 162 was needed, the makeup game would have been played the Monday after the regular season ended.

Cards are stinking and the Brew Crew are coming on
I think we have more to worry about from the Brewers who have been the hottest of the 3 teams. Too much bad-luck following the Cards.

Being a game behind the Brewers - we gotta hope the lose.

Aug 15 - Ted Lilly walked by the lineup card and said to nobody in particular "I can't believe I'm batting 9th again".

From the radar it looks like
we should be able to get the game in today. How is the weather in Chicago?

by cubsnlinux on Sep 10, 2007 11:30 AM CDT   0 recs

Ted Lily
I heard during the broadcast yesterday that Lily refused to head back to Chicago early and instead wanted to stay w/the team. I understand his thinking and all but I would have liked to think that the red birds came in tired and weak and Lily was rested and strong waiting for them since yesterday.

I had another comment to make but to prevent any jinxing and subsequent ramming my forehead into a wall, I will just keep to myself.

Emotionally exhausted and frustrated, yet anxious to get the game in and hopefully won. As others have said, I just keep getting sucked back into it. I'll try to get some work in too.

My wish list for this week Monday - Sunday
Wish

#1 When on the bases they pay attention
#2 When asked to bunt they get it done
#3 They make pitchers work and dont swing at 1st pitch
#4 They dont make the other teams pitchers look like .300 hitters
#5 The relief pitchers dont give up more walks in one inning that the starter did in 6
#6 Dont ground into double plays multiple times in a game
#7 When we are leading in the 9th inning, our 1st and 3rd baseman play a no doubles defense.

by parrotinct on Sep 10, 2007 12:09 PM CDT   0 recs

RE: My wish list for this week
Let me add:

#8 Begin playing to our potential
#9 Marmol, Howry and Demp pitch a lot and Wuertz, Eyre, Wood are not.
#10 Lou shaves and he learns how to pronounce the name of his players

Yeah that's gonna last long, Dewsh bag.

Sure the Bears lost to one of the best teams in the League in an hostile environment on the Chargers home field, but atleast the Bears went down fighting and left nothing on the field. Can't say that about the Cubs, who don't even seem to care themselves anymore.

Ridiculous last statement...
I'm not one to believe that in baseball effort/caring is a direct reflection of results.  It's not like football or basketball where trying harder directly improves outcome.  Baseball is such a precision sport that it's hard to gauge desire/indifference based on performance.  And to suggest that a team doesn't care simply based on results is a simplistic (and ignorant) conclusion, in my opinion.

I think it's just as possible to fail in baseball by trying TOO hard.  You aren't going to be able to convince me that the team doesn't care and isn't trying.  DLee, DeRosa, Zambrano, Theriot, and Soriano and the rest are all competitors and professionals.  They all want to win.  The wins just aren't happening, but that's due to lack PRODUCTION, not lack of effort or caring.

daaa bears
looked fantastic in my opinion, lt had negative yards until the last play of the first, and had the offense not turned the ball over, a shutout would have been a very likely possibility against the #1 team in points scored last year, on the road, thats just sick.  the offense could obviously be a lot better, but grossman didnt suck, and the chargers d is top 3 in the league.  i expect an absolute ass beating to the chiefs next week.

and its hard not to share the above posters attitude, with football pumping you up and the cubs really not playing well, but i definitely think everyone is trying just as hard as they normally do, the results just arent there.  i have faith we'll get on a hot streak, whether itll be enough who knows, but soriano dlee and aramis have all been swinging pretty good bats, and that should translate to wins.

"the Cubbies give me more hope"
Any chance of anything you will ever say to have even the smallest amount of  value has now been destroyed with those 6 simple words:

"the Cubbies give me more hope."

THat's absolutely laughable. What a ridiculous statement. Is what makes that statement so surreal, is that you're probably totally serious. The delusion of most other Cub fans is amazing.

Also, since you obviously know nothing of football (and apparently baseball for that matter) The Bears Defense was on the field at a 2:1 clip against one of the most explosive Offenses in the League. The fact that they only held them to 14 points, both scoring drives were started in Bears territory thanks to careless fumbles BTW, is a perfect example how stifling this Defense will be this year.

The Bears Offense which was a disaster against a good Defense as well, will get into a nice rythm over the next couple weeks against inferior Defenses.

The Bears will make the playoffs, unlike the unloveable losers.

by lemon20pie on Sep 10, 2007 1:49 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

you know
i completely agree with you on the bears, and am very excited to watch that defense every sunday, but if youre just going to bash the cubs and have a horrible attitude, why are you even in the game thread at all?

Not even sure where to begin...
Wait...dewsh bag?  Seriously?  Wasn't Douche Bag on your spelling tests in fourth grade?  Anyway...

So I guess I know nothing about football or baseball and this upsets me.  Coming from a regular armchair quarterback such as yourself, i am distraught.  I cannot believe I spent all this time thinking I knew something about football only to have it spoiled by the likes of you.

In a game where LT threw for more TD's than Grossman, our QB again, let the ball slip out of his hands on the one play I was actually excited to see him scramble out of the pocket, and the team put up a measley 3 points, i find myself wanting a little more.

True, they have Brian Griese though I feel fairly confident that Lovie and his Dustyesque managing will do his best to preserve Grossman's ego and play him.

Yes the D looked great the first half but then, well, then...

In a division where the Packers still have Favre, the Vikings have a quarterback who appears to have some takent, and the Lions have Kitna who looked pretty solid yesterday, i would go counting your eggs my friend.

Believe me, I want nothing more than to see the Bears go back tot he SB but their chances are in question.  Sure we are one game in but this is not baseball, there is not "a long way to go".

Cubbies have a great chance to go to the postseason and I suppose if you can't see this well, I guess your math skills are as bad as your spelling.

Thanks for your input though...much appreciated.

I just can't give up
As I posted in July, I spent a month out of the country.  The only Cub news I got was spotty internet cafe access.  This was right in the middle of the hot streak - started just before I left, continued until I got back.  As I sat in beautiful sidewalk cafes and drank wine and hiked in the Pyrennees, I thought to myself "I make too big a deal of things in my life.  So what if I'm a Cub fan?  There's more to life that baseball.  Stop making such a big deal of it"

We returned August 12 to O'Hare.  I had vowed to quit smoking and just take life as it came & worry less.  Today it is September 10.  I have upped my smoking considerably - up to 5-10 during a cub evening game.  I fret constantly, and drive my fiancee crazy with the pacing and swearing while listening to Pat and Ron.  I feel soul-sucking depression every time the Cubs lose or go down, and frantically seek out a Brewer/Card score whenever I can.

The moral is, this team is ours for the long run.  The Cubs are the relative that forgets birthdays and fails to return calls.  They drive you crazy, but at the end of it all, they're still family & you can't turn your back on family.

Let's all cheer for our prodigal suns today.  A win would be nice, guys.  Lord knows we don't ask for much.

you know what?
I'm just gonna say it. We have to win this game.

And Lou needs to shave. I was at a bar and half drunk and it still doesn't look good.

Also, could we get some playing time for the kids? I know this is a big race or whatever, but don't you think that maybe Soto gives us the best chance to win ball games (yes I know Kendall has been hitting well)?

Also, I know last year was a rebuilding year or whatever, but I feel like some of that is even going on right now. I think we are starting to see who is going to sink and who will swim in big games. If we don't do it this year, this experience is going to be huge next year. Let's hope that those who show they can't swim are given floaties on the way out. That would only be proper.

So much for
a lineup shakeup. Looks like Lou is saying "You guys are the best I've got. If you don't produce runs, we ain't gonna win, so it's on you."

Floyd cleaning up...
...is a "shake-up," I guess. Maybe Lou is hoping that Floyd will take his new lineup position and do something with it. Guy's got all the power of a rusted-out C battery, though.

He just refuses to put the best OBP up high
I still stand by my Theriot followed by Kendall 1-2 punch.
Leading off and playing short, TheRiot; batting 2nd and catching, Mr.OBP, Jason Kendall.....Do it Lou!

Soriano
will be hitting leadoff for this team for the rest of the season.

I know, I know...
But I can wish for the better 1-2 punch.

So do I.
But Soriano, actual manager, doesn't.

Pitcher batting 8th?
I know LaRussa has done this in the past, but I thought he had stopped.  Is there any other manager who currently does that?

by BrownE34 on Sep 10, 2007 1:31 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Technically...
...the Cards have a pitcher batting clean-up too. ;)
You can't quiet THE RIOT

Floyd batting clean-up?
What the what? Is there something I don't know about, like say Floyd is all of a sudden going to knock the cover off the ball? Someone please help me understand this craziness.
There are 3 things in my life which I really love: God, family, and baseball. The only problem - once baseball season starts, I change the order around a bit.

Typo on RedBird's RF:
That is "The UN-Natural"
Prince Fielder...he is neither.

Nah, I like "The Natural"
...just fine, sir. After all, in the novel -- not the movie -- Hobbs strikes out to end the game, in order to get $25,000 so that he can retire (his doctor tells him his health won't let him play after this season).
