Open Thread: Cubs vs. Astros, Tuesday 9/11, 7:05 CT

Pardon the interruption -- we now resume our regularly scheduled road trip.

Interesting reading before you continue -- Will Jauss, the 11-year-old son of Dodgers bench coach Dave Jauss, spent several weeks of his summer vacation traveling with the Dodgers and wrote about it for Yahoo. If the name sounds familiar, it should. Dave Jauss' father is Bill Jauss, longtime Chicago sportswriter and one of the hosts of the old radio and TV show The Sportswriters.

Enough diversions. Let's win tonight.

 Today's Starting Pitchers
Jason Marquis
 J. Marquis
Cubs
vs. Brandon Backe
 B. Backe
Astros
11-8 W-L 0-1
4.13 ERA 4.76
97 SO 0
69 BB 3
22 HR 1
vs. Hou -- vs. Cubs
Well, this is a mismatch. Yes, you heard me right. Jason Marquis gets kicked around by the Astros virtually every time he faces them, and this year is no exception: 1-1, 6.32 this year, and a 5.11 lifetime ERA against them, although somehow his career record vs. Houston is 8-5. Lance Berkman is a particular nemesis: .559/.667/.853, 19-for 34, 5 doubles, a triple, a HR, 13 RBI, and 11 walks. I'd suggest adding to that walk total tonight.

Brandon Backe had elbow surgery a year ago and has started only once this year, losing to the Brewers a week ago. He hasn't faced the Cubs since May 25, 2005 (nice lineup, huh?). The suddenly-hot Aramis Ramirez is .364/.417/.636 (4-for-11, a HR) vs. Backe. I liked yesterday's idea of putting Cliff Floyd in between D-Lee and Ramirez, to break up the two RH hitters. Hope Lou does that again tonight.

Today's game is cable-only, on Extra Innings, and at today's Mediacenter link.

Let's keep those hot bats
and continue winning. If we can score 6 or 7 tonight and win, we might just get our hittig mojo back like it was in the middle of summer and put some wins together. A couple more losses by the Birds and they're probably done.

Off subject, Al
Did you and your DGA friends discuss the potential for me and my WGA cohorts to stage a strike when our contract is up this fall?  I'm pretty sure we'll wait for SAG to possibly join us in June but I wonder if the DGA has a take as of yet.

by TR on Sep 11, 2007 3:50 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

I can't discuss this, unfortunately.
I'm aware of the situation, though.

The WGA going on strike??
Good thing the Western Golf Association had their tournament last weekend before they did this.

(sorry..this was the 1st thing that popped into my mind when I saw WGA)

You should check Backe's stats..
he's only had 1 start this year.

by Oscarson1 on Sep 11, 2007 4:00 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Whoops!
I changed all the stats except that one (you'll recognize the original numbers as being Derek Lowe's W-L record before his start vs. the Cubs; I usually copy/paste each pitcher's previous start and just change the opponent's numbers).

I'll fix it.

I know Berkman kills Marquis
but the guy that scares me is Pence. I think he's gonna be a Cub killer throughout his career. Whoever said the Cubs need to score 7 tonight to win was bang on. Plus, THEY NEED TO TAKE MORE PITCHES!!!! Not making starters work hard enough lately. They could have Backe out by the 5th if they work the count a bit more. Get into that 'Stros pen!

by Hugest Canadian Cubs Fan on Sep 11, 2007 5:53 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Astros Pen
is pretty damn good.  Look at Lights-out Lidge (is that an alliteration?)  Maybe we can get into their middle relievers, which are less good.

203 pitches
Is that enough for you?  We only threw 135.  Woohoo!  We got into the Astros 'pen.  Whoop-dee-doo.  We took 10 walks, they took 1.  Yay!

Can we stop advocating just standing at the plate and watching pitches go by as some kind of "smart" strategy now?

it seems to be some combination of

a) the Cubs get up for Brewers and RedBirds and...

b) the Cubs seem to mentally let down when they play the other teams in the division.

Can't Kendall
block the odd ball in the dirt? Nice run to give up after stranding three guys in the top half. And, typically, the guy flies out a couple pitches later.

The amount of time he's been with the Cubs, its equivalent to spring training plus the first week of the regular season.

Regardless though, one WP, eh... two WP on same AB, unacceptable. He and Marquis were not on the same page during the 2nd WP.

I know that this has been beaten to death but...
I JUST WANT THERIOT TO LEADOFF.  Why in the heck is he not the leadoff guy?  Unless Fonz starts the game with a solo shot, he starts the game with a swinging strike out.  It is hard to get to a pitcher quickly when he is nearly guaranteed the first out of the game without throwing strike one.  Theriot makes pitchers work.  Aarrrrrgh.  Unless Lou is afraid of ticking off Soriano, his insistence to lead him off makes no sense (or at least less sense).

Somehow somewhere sometime someone is going to figure out how to get through to Fonzie that he needs to move down in the order to help the Cubs.

I'm sure we here in the BCB will have all sorts of ideas/suggestions/advice to offer up on this issue but not until the offseason.  Right now we've got a little Astro-kicking to take care of, then we pluck a few birds.

Screw Piniella
How many times is that idiot going to let a pitcher hit and then remove him an inning later without recording an out?  Marquis had been getting the ball up for a full inning before the sixth.  Why they are going in again to Lee is beyond asinine.  Marquis and Pineilla have been awful to this point.  If they win this one, it's in spite of those two fools tonight.

It didn't look to me
Like the Cubs had anybody "on the ropes" in this game. They loaded the bases with two outs and didn't get an additional run. Teams do this all the time.

Now, with nobody out? You'd have a point.

by Not Bruce Froemming on Sep 11, 2007 9:09 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I wasn't concerned with the 2 outs too much
Riot just walked to load the bases. It was pretty much on 4 pitches even with the 'get me over 3-0' pitch for a strike, followed by ball 4. D-Lee was 2-0 and made out #3. 3 times in those 2 AB's Backe shook off the catcher and was struggling with his control.

One more hit could have lead to a huge inning.

Runners in scoring position:

.253/.350/.482

Runners in scoring position, two outs:

.268/.388/.415

Close and late:

None of that is "below league average." Soriano actually hits best close and late this season.

you guys are ridiculous
rational, constructive criticism is acceptable.  Examples: "We (Soriano) leave(s) too many men on base"; "We (Soriano) have (has) no clutch hitting"; "We (Soriano) swing(s) at too many first pitches".

What people (Bruce) get annoyed by is the stupid "season over" comments.  Good lord people, we are currently 1/2 game back.  How can the season possibly be over on September 11 while 1/2 game back?  That is ridiculous.

My pet peeve is you fools that say "even if we win this crappy division, obviously we aren't going to do anything in the playoffs" or "i'd rather not go to the playoffs since we don't deserve it / can't beat crappy teams / can barely win this crappy division".  that is even more ridiculous.  as in any sport, you take what you are given, survive and advance.  who cares how we get in?  you don't want the season extended so you can say "season over" that many more times?

And my pet peeve
is people who take this so seriously that they can't recognize sarcasm and frustration.  Do you really imagine that people who say "season's over" really mean it, or could it possibly be that they are just venting; maybe, just maybe, they are just as loyal and true blue as you, but they express their frustration differently.  Think about it.

i think you need to re-read my post
i "allow" and appreciate criticism and dissent.  i don't understand the "season's over" and "we don't deserve to extend the season" comments, which do not constitute criticism.

can we create two posting areas...
that way the venters can have their fun together, and the sunny optimists can have a huggin and squeezin session together.  Just once, it would be nice to have a thread where everyone just discussed the game without this subject (trolls!  rainbow brites!) coming up repeatedly!!  We are all human, and different.  Let's accept it and move the frick on.

Bingo, Joe
That's exactly what I can't stand; the "season's over" BS and the negative prediction BS (for example, when the Cubs don't score by the second inning, the "well, so much for this one" posts).

Some people like to characterize criticism of that as "all you want is to blow sunshine up our asses all the time and say only nice things about the Cubs." Not so. If you want to rip on their lack of clutch hitting tonight, rip away.

But, with them one game out of first place, if you want to use tonight's game as a basis for the season ending, I'm calling you out on it. Because that's just stupid.

Will you lay off
You do realize Soriano's OBP is about the same as Theriot's.

by cubsbak on Sep 11, 2007 10:33 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I will not "lay off"
Soriano has no plate approach whatsoever.  He goes up there hacking every time and he's just quick enough to get hits a decent percentage of the time, but there's no situational hitting, no understanding of the strike zone, no ability to work a count.  The shame of it is that with his natural ability, he could be unbelievable if he would just learn those things.

Answer my question:  Can you imagine Soriano having an at bat like the one DeRosa just had?

That is one
situation where I think Jones did the right thing. Other than the soft liner to left, Jones has been putrid against Lidge, bases loaded,
2-0, the only pitch you could possibly swing at is that one. That thing was a **shot. I would hate to see Jones miss the best pitch he'll see and end up letting Lidge back in the count with how dirty some of his breaking junk looked to lefties (Fontenot) tonight.

Not Idiots...
Jones has K'd all but one time against Lidge. I promise you that was the most hittable pitch Jones would have seen that at bat. that thing was put on a tee for him. You have to attack that. There is significant danger in letting Lidge back in the count. His breaking sutff was filthy to lefties (Fontenot) and his stuff explodes down, which is not Jones' wheelhouse. That pitch was a PEACH, he scorched it too, that thing hits a gap, no one would be saying that. You gotta hit that ball. I promise you Aram of Lee wouldn't have taken that thing either, not many people here would jump on them.
