Around SBN: Explaining Jeremy Lin's Early, Surprising Success

Open Thread: Cubs vs. Astros, Wednesday 9/12, 7:05 CT

Many of us followed the Brewers' 7-4 loss to the Pirates this afternoon, and I can imagine many of the Cubs did as well, preparing for tonight's game. Thus, they know that by winning tonight, they can move back into a first place tie.

Let's hope that knowledge galvanizes the entire roster into playoff-caliber play this evening at Houston.

With last night's extra-inning loss, the Cubs fell to 2-8 in extra-inning games. There is only one other team this year with as few as two extra-inning wins... the Boston Red Sox. And even so, the Cubs still have the best record in the NL since the low point on June 2, 51-30.

The I-don't-know-what-to-say story of the day: if you're a major league ballplayer, better not be thinking about getting pregnant. Huh? you're saying. Well, MLB is considering banning fertility drugs. I kid you not. The mind boggles.

vs. Hou -- vs. Cubs
Rich Hill hasn't faced anyone on the current Astros roster more than six times; he has two no-decisions this year vs. Houston. He threw very well a month ago in the Juice Box, allowing only three hits and a run in seven innings in a game the Cubs lost 2-1 in ... what else... extra innings.

The Cubs may have caught a break by not having to face LHP Troy Patton tonight; instead, RHP Matt Albers will go. He got pounded by the Brewers a week ago. In 3.1 career relief innings vs. the Cubs, Albers has allowed five hits and three runs.

Today's game is on WGN; if you don't have WGN or EI, try today's Mediacenter link.

51-40 not 51-30
Since June 2nd, when they lost and fell to 22-31, the Cubs have gone 51-40. Not sure how that stacks up in the NL.

Regarding the fertility drugs
This was covered on the Sports Reporters on Sunday.

The drug Clomid is taken by men who take steroids. It stimulates testosterone production.

It is used to prevent men who take steroids from growing C-cups, said Selena Roberts of the New York Times said on the panel.

This is a valid move that should have been done a long time ago.

In related news, Rick Ankiel is now 1 for 18 with outfield play that would get you cut from a Rookie League team since the story broke about his innocent, harmless use of HGH.

I'm so glad he's just about out of the spotlight.

by lancaster99 on Sep 12, 2007 4:25 PM CDT reply actions

In other words,...
Clomid is what an athlete on steroids use to avoid sounding like a chipmunk.

by Fraggin Judge on Sep 12, 2007 4:32 PM CDT up reply actions

Right
And I for one am glad baseball got around to noticing.

There is absolutely no reason for a man to take Clomid, unless he is on steroids.

Malaise
I've gone from wailing and gnashing my teeth over every pitch two weeks ago to really being ambivalent about this team.

If they start showing how good they can be, there will be, again, commensurate concern from me. Until then, I'll continue to expect the wild mood swings in performance.

by jjmarie30 on Sep 12, 2007 5:23 PM CDT reply actions

I've got a newfound belief we can do this
after that devastating loss last night, due to a recent gander at the Brewers' schedule which includes:

Cincy (3)
@ Hous (3)
@ ATL (4)
STL (3)
SD (4)

to end the season, they'll be lucky to go 8-9

by rustydevil on Sep 12, 2007 5:33 PM CDT reply actions

Brewers going according to form
They actually did one better going 3-3 on the road, thus the Cubs need to go better on the road, and win 2 or 3 in Houston.

When you look at it the Brewers have 11 out of their remaining 17 games against contenders. As the law of averages go contenders playing contenders more often than not split...so the Brewers will probably win 2 of 4 with SD and 2 of 3 with the Cardinals. In Atlanta I say they lose 3 of 4. This is 6 of 11.  They play Cincinnati so I hold they will win 2 of 3 and even if they win 2 of 3 with in Houston. total 9 of 17...total 83 wins.

Cubs will have to win 11 of 18 to win it. They thus need the 2 wins in Houston and 2 in Stl, and then they will have to win 7 of 14 down the stretch to reach 84. I think they win 8 of the 14 or win by two.

by Ivy Walls on Sep 12, 2007 5:36 PM CDT reply actions

first rule of statistics:
there is no law of averages.

but there is "luck" and its about damn time the Cubs get some of that, and the schedule certainly appears to be on our side as we finish the season.

by rustydevil on Sep 12, 2007 5:41 PM CDT up reply actions

That also assumes
Atl isn't going to tank, especially after the Chipper ump comments, the Cards don't implode (the Cubs can cause this) and SD actually has something to play for come Sept 27th. SD is most scary in that they may have already clinched the WC and will rest a combo of Peavy, Young and Maddog.

Fertility Drugs
Al, if you actually read the article you linked to, you'd understand why they're considering it.

The drugs
I'm a producer for a sports entertainment company and you'd be surprised how many people have been caught using that drug.  It's a good idea.  This fertility drug is taken along with another kind of steroid or painkiller.  I think it helps prevent the male's body tissue from forming femalish looking parts.

I could be totally off about that one drug btu if from what I was told at work is what this is, that's why.

Line-up- Theriot
Theriot is batting 8th tonight according to Gameday.  I'm sure someone will copy the batting order here.

Theriot could have used a day off IMO.  His BA is dropping off big time in the last few weeks and he's been playing everyday.  I wouldn't mind having Cedeno play one game this week if it means a refreshed Theriot tomorrow.

He's been getting at most 1 hit it seems like every game.  His average was .290 I think like 3 months ago and now .275?  That's a drop-off that's unfortunate to have in September.

Can anyone watching the actual game...
...tell me if the ump is really giving Rich Hill a postage-stamp-sized strike zone, or if that's just GameDay?  I thought I saw strike three twice in that Biggio AB.

by mistersite on Sep 12, 2007 8:54 PM CDT reply actions

well, if there's any squeezing going on...
...it seems to be consistent.  Just saw what looked like a perfect strike during the Theriot at-bat called a ball outside.

p.s. pitchers getting 'squeezed' in Minute Maid Park - imagine that...  ;-)

I think tonight
was the 37th Biggio give away night.  Actually it is Friday night and it is a red hat with "Biggio" and the #7 on it.  They are milking that guy for everything this year.

When are they going to have the official Biggio Wedgie Underwear Night?  That guy is just like Eckstein.  The kind of guy you would have given a wedgie to in grade school.  Talented yes, but annoying.

Prince Fielder...he is neither.

It would seem that Biggio has passed on that mantle to Hunter Pence.  Argghhh.....

Part of the Soriano Offseason Reclamation Project
would be to go talk with Joe Torre and see if he has any advice for getting through to Soriano.  I love Fonzie's enthusiasm and his talent is tremendous, but there will come a day when his talent starts to slip.  And I don't know how much of a 'ballplayer' he is on the inside.  This offseason would be a great time to find out.

Stay focused, guys!!
...not the ballplayers, the broadcasters!!

They're off on a tangent about climate control in Minnesota while Hou is batting bottom of 7th after leadoff HR...every out is crucial at this point trying to get a W w/o burning through the bullpen...

These discussions can be diverting and fun but they're annoying when we're so focused on the game...keep your priorities, guys!! (again, meaning Len & Bob, not Lou & Crew).

Great job by Hill tonight hope Woody and whoever can hold it.

need 6 outs...
...where's the guy Dusty put in G7 vs. Fla useless reliever when need him?

Wuertz or Wood or....?? Howry again? Damn wish we had one more dependable guy out there now...worried about last 2 innings.

It's Howry decent call he's got rubberish arm even tho went 2 last nite this still a little risky...I think Pinella feels using Wood just too much of a chance; if he were to fail it would be a huge blow to team in this situation.

Could tried Wuertz but he's shaky also...like the call.

Howry won't walk guys
that's his biggest advantage over Wood/Wuertz and other late inning choices, clearly.

I think if Wood had full year or longer period to get comfortable, find some success, he'd be an option here...there may come a game we have to throw him in tight situation, but the downside is just too great right now to risk it.

Tomorrow is another day win now baby!!

Cannot be overstated
...the Cub curse (with ball hitting bag), Bartman, Don Young (for young inexperienced Pie overplaying ball hit to center), all the SOS woulda been dredged up had Hou come back and Cubs somehow managed to lose this one so freakishly.

By winning they can turn it all into a positive and a momentum-builder...Dempster pitched great except for the double hit hard to center...threw a lot of gutsy pitches great win for the team don't know how much of this I can take though!!

Media and fans would have really made things a lot worse with all the negativity, just by doing what writers and fans do...the ball hitting bag was just a total fluke and credit to Demp and the Cubs for overcoming it all to chalk up a big win.

Theriot
Watching the replays again, Theriot made an absolutely GENIUS play. Lee's throw had to be wide. Theriot drug his foot perfectly across second with his momentum and threw an absolute bullet to Dempster. He knew he had to throw that ball as hard as he could. Had D Lee not bobbled, that play wouldn't have even been all that close, which really tells you how slow Munson is.

Wow. Did this really just happen?

by park on Sep 12, 2007 10:12 PM CDT reply actions

Dempster
Give Dempster his due on that play.  Not only for inducing the grounder but for getting over to the bag in plenty of time.  Something not usually seen in the Cubs staff in recent days, i.e. Eyre and Wood.  Well done Demp.

We had 'em all the way
I was out at my favorite local establishment watching the game tonight. When that ball hit first base in the ninth, I just grabbed my keys and walked out. One of those things. This team can't keep getting bad breaks forever, can it?

Well, they got a good break at the end. That's what counted.

Again, to me this is proof that maybe, just maybe, this is the Cubs' year. Nice job by Hill tonight. Nice job by Dempster holding it together after things got a little dicey.

And a nice game by Cliff Floyd, who has taken his fair share of grief from a lot of people (myself included).

I know what some are saying about if the Cubs lose the division by a game, think about Tuesday night's game. Well, if the Cubs win the division by a game, think about this game.

Unreal.

This wasn't on him
How many times in a season do you see a ground ball bounce off the bag like that? I've been watching baseball 35 years. My answer: Never.

I was not nervous after he walked Palmeiro. At least it sets up the double play, and Munson was a prime DP candidate, since he runs with a piano on his back. It all worked out.

Dang, what a win.

by Not Bruce Froemming on Sep 12, 2007 10:17 PM CDT up reply actions

Sure it wasn't on him
Except the double.

But that's kind of my point.  Things get dicey with Dempster a great deal.  He's an average closer.  An in our division that is good enough.

It has been a bad week for him I'm happy he finally got a save.

I thought Demp had massive stones tonight to get out of what was a total freaky situation. Good presence of mind to get over to first, cover the bag and catch an absolutely perfect throw from Theriot.

by Not Bruce Froemming on Sep 12, 2007 10:19 PM CDT up reply actions

Hey Notbrucefroeming,
The odd thing is not only am I from the same part of the country as Dempster, but I met him when he was still a member of the Florida Marlins!

I'm a radio morning show host in Victoria, B.C, and he came to town to speak to a room full of little leaguers, and I was asked to be the moderator.

When I told him I was a huge Cubs fan, he told me he was really close to Jim Hendry, and would love to put on a Cubs uniform one day. A few years later, when they gave him a shot, I was really happy.

He was really nice to me, and a genuine guy.

HOWEVER, the bottom line is winning, and I don't think he has the stuff to do it on a continuous basis.  Honestly, how many easy outings has he had the last month or so?

It was the Alex Gonzalez error that killed us!

by Hugest Canadian Cubs Fan on Sep 12, 2007 10:30 PM CDT up reply actions

Tonight was too much a fluke
He was ahead two strikes on the first batter, who hit a routine grounder to first. Tell me the last time you saw a play like that.

Victoria ... I was there in 1998 and loved it. Took the ferry over from Port Angeles. Beautiful city. Demp is from Vancouver, no? Another beautiful city. Went there, too, and played golf in the Okanagan Valley (Kelowna, Vernon, etc.). I'm a big BC fan.

How does someone from Victoria become a Cubs fan?

Cool story about Demp. Last weekend I was in Pittsburgh, and after Saturday night's game I went to the seafood restaurant in the Cubs' hotel to have a late dinner. There was a raw bar up front, and who was sitting there? Dempster and Jim Hendry, splitting the biggest order of sushi I've ever seen. Your story about them being good friends makes even more sense now.

You shoud stick with

I was mildly surprised Hendry and Demp weren't both hospitalized with food poisoning after that.

BTW, Hendry, Eyre and Fontenot holding court in the bar afterward up until closing time. Looked like they were enjoying himself, despite the scores of Cubs fans hangers-on who were there.

I've got to think 81 nights of that can get old after a while.

Dempster
He's from a small community north of Vancouver called Gibsons.  And I get asked that question about being a Cubs fan a lot. I blame it on WGN. I was just an innocent kid in the summer of 1984. Waking up late morning, Cubs on at 11:20 local time. Perfect. They were the best team in baseball that year, and they had me.

Luckily, I was too young to really feel the pain of that series loss to the Padres.

My real scars were earned in 2003. Prior hanging that 0-2 curve to Pudge, and of course, the Gonzalez error, are the snapshots that come back to me at the weirdest times.

I love this website. I really feel like I'm not alone in my pain. After all, misery loves company.

It was the Alex Gonzalez error that killed us!

by Hugest Canadian Cubs Fan on Sep 12, 2007 11:53 PM CDT up reply actions

The Tigers were
the best team in baseball in 1984.  Of course, the best team doesn't always win a seven game series so I wish the Cubs had gotten a shot at them.

by TR on Sep 13, 2007 1:12 AM CDT up reply actions

Honestly
Since August 1st Ryan Dempster has appeared in 21 games, going 1-3 with 9 saves.  In 14 of those appearances he has not given up an earned run. He has not allowed a hit or walk in 7 appearances, most recently Saturday in Pittsburgh.

If the bottom line is winning then there is no problem with Ryan Dempster.  He has converted 26 of 29 save opportunities.  The Cubs have a record of 39-19 in games in which Ryan Dempster has pitched.

Being a closer is not easy.  It's not supposed to be.  Please, lay off of Ryan Dempster.  He is not the problem.

It was a freak single. Pie should have cut the ball off to at least hold Lamb to a double, even if the run still scores.

And the double-play ball was perfectly placed. Lee made it harder than it had to be.

by lancaster99 on Sep 12, 2007 10:19 PM CDT up reply actions

And a pitcher has to have ice in his veins to go through that inning. Tht's why Lou gave Dempster a head-lock hug.

You don't want somebody
in that situation who will crap his pants, like Hawkins did almost every time out. (Although Hawkins had the stuff to close.)

I've posted this before, but I was convinced Demp had what it took after that game in 2005 in Philadelphia, when he walked the bases loaded, then struck out the side to get the save. He also appears to have the crazy/edgy mentality a lot of closers seem to possess.

I do think Marmol will be a good closer someday. Not today, however.

by San Diego Smooth Jazz Man on Sep 12, 2007 10:19 PM CDT reply actions

No, they aren't
The Pirates and the Reds are similar: Good bats, bad  pitching. Pirates are younger, so their upside is greater, I would think.

Astros, I don't know what's going on with them. Losing Clemens and Pettitte didn't help. Same with an aging Biggio. But they aren't rolling over, either.

by razzpunk on Sep 12, 2007 11:03 PM CDT reply actions

Yeah, me too
He was throwing his arms up like he was complaining about a call, or someone not making a play.
But, I could also read his lips, "Wow, this team is going to give a heart-attack!"
I loved it when Harry cried, "Cubs Win, Cubs Win!"

by Ken Hubbs on Sep 12, 2007 11:30 PM CDT up reply actions

always good to get wins this time of year
but come on guys, dempster is not a closer, hes going to give everyone here a heart attack, now let me put it this way, 9th inning world series game 7, marmol has not pitched at all, who do you want in to close the game, marmol or dempster?  marmol will be the closer next year but if we are in it this year we really have to consider moving him there if were "serious" about winning
Bring back the damn cowbell!

Please stop it
Did you watch the ninth inning? I mean, watch it, not listen to it, or watch it on Gameday?

by Not Bruce Froemming on Sep 12, 2007 11:23 PM CDT up reply actions

I have to agree
you just can't expect a rookie to come through in such a pressure cooker. Dempster is a coronary waiting to happen, but he has been our closer for the past three years.

We can't change horses in the middle of the river.

I loved it when Harry cried, "Cubs Win, Cubs Win!"

by Ken Hubbs on Sep 12, 2007 11:27 PM CDT up reply actions

There is no way in hell
anybody could switch to a different closer at this point.

Marmol will be the closer of the future, maybe. But at the same time, why lose such a great set up man?

phat

by phatass on Sep 12, 2007 11:30 PM CDT up reply actions

He's not even a setup man
He's a stop plug that prevents the tub from overflowing.  The starter has bases loaded, 1 out?  Shit, no problem, bring in Marmol to strike out the side.

He's 'saved' more games in the 7th and 8th than Dempster has in the 9th all year.

Plus, you can not really put this past one on Dempster.  There's NO way the Astros should have got that one run.  I'll give them a triple, but then it's 1 out, runner on third.  Even if the runner scores, no sweat, Cubs still lead 3-2.

by IllinoisCubs on Sep 12, 2007 11:44 PM CDT up reply actions

Yeah
I thought about that.

Setup isn't really the term for him. He's not even "middle relief". I don't know what he is. But I'm glad we've got him.

by phatass on Sep 12, 2007 11:49 PM CDT up reply actions

Fireman
The old name for relievers was firemen. You'd bring in your best fireman in sticky situations. However, some time after the advent of the save as a statistic (as bad a stat as the win, in my opinion) it became the norm to only bring in your closer in the 9th, even though often times it would make a ton more sense to bring in your best reliever earlier.

Carlos Marmol is our fireman. And up until recently, Wuertz was as well - I remember him coming in several times early in the season with bases loaded, no outs, and striking out the side.

by false cognate on Sep 13, 2007 12:21 AM CDT up reply actions

So if Dempster is our closer...
...that would make Ohman our opener?   <rimshot>

Thank you.  Good night everybody.  I'll be here all week...

Lou Brown: "My kinda team, Charlie, my kinda team..."

by ballhawk on Sep 13, 2007 1:18 AM CDT up reply actions

And another thing...
striking out the side in the 6th or 7th inning is a completely different situation than striking out the side in the 9th.  Shouldn't be, but it is.  Marmol may have the filthiest stuff on the staff, but sometimes filthy doesn't quite cut it in the 9th.  That's the mental part of the game, and that's why closers tend to be...  uh...  a little bit out there.

Like many others have said here, Marmol may be the closer somewhere down the road.  And Soriano may hit lower in the order somewhere down the road.  But now ain't the time to be making these kinds of changes.

Like the Chairman of the Board says...

"Stick with me baby, I'm the guy that you came in with.
Luck be a lady tonight"

Lou Brown: "My kinda team, Charlie, my kinda team..."

Wow
so I was at a play, actually, helping my wife with sound and music for King Lear, and missed most of this.

The play got done and I stepped out to check the score on my blackberry gameday. It looked really bad on gameday. I had no idea there was a freak play.

What, if anybody is still out there, happened?

Cliff Notes version
Dempster got ahead 0-2 on the first batter, who bounced a ground ball to the first baseman. Routine play. But the ball caromed off the base and rolled into right field. Single.

Second batter doubled past Pie, who misplayed the ball into a triple. Runner at third, nobody out.

Can't remember how the first out was achieved.

Dempster then walked the next batter, then the next batter grounded into a 3-6-1 double play to end it.

Just another day in paradise.

Wow
I'm not sure I could have handled that. This has been the longest season ever, I swear.

2003 was long, but I didn't have the games on the internet so I couldn't watch or listen to too many of them. I haven't had cable in a long time.

With the gameday audio, following th Cubs gets that much more fun and stressful. I love the internet.

I want to hear that 3-6-1 call.

by phatass on Sep 12, 2007 11:28 PM CDT up reply actions

recap
loretta had a freak single that bounced off 1st base, away from dlee.

lamb tripled on a play that pie should have made in cf to hold him to a double.  1 run in.

scott hit a ball off the end of his bat to ramirez, who threw him out at 1st. imo, lamb could have scored on that play.

palmeiro walked after falling behind in the count.

eric munson (possibly the slowest mlb player, ever) bounces into at 3-6-1 DP to end the game, with dlee bobbling the ball before throwing to theriot.

CUBS WIN! CUBS WIN by the numbers...
3 for 2003, close.

6 for Billy Buckner, a great Cub Firstbaseman who suffered unfairly with a 'groundball out' that wasn't and should have been to help the '86 BoSox vs. "Mats".

1 for the Demps' First Base out that propels the Cubbies back into First Place still chasing their First WS appearance and Win since '45!

Could this be it???????
That hit off the bag was so "Cub-like" that I knew it was going to end badly. Then when Dempster gave up the triple, run scored, no one out, it just had to be another loss. History and recent play demanded it.
But, something happened that I have rarely, if ever seen, and that was that double play to end the game. Dempster was pumped, Lou was pumped, Trammel was pumped, Santo was pumped, even I was pumped!!
I couldn't believe my eyes - the Cubs actually won a game that had loss written all over it!
As I said, that rarely happens, oh if it could only mean the curse is over. Tomorrow, and this weekend will be the final test.
I loved it when Harry cried, "Cubs Win, Cubs Win!"

I don't think any of us can handle many of those. I've been swallowing Tylenol PM like Skittles to sleep at night. In all fairness, Demp got crapped on by that first hit. That doesn't happen, we get out with a win, no harm done. But GOOD GOD, UNBELIEVABLE!! People are right, I had that sinking, "You have to be BEEPING kidding me!" feeling. That youtube Cub/Red Sox Wrold Series video
is nightmarish.  The idea that Cliff Bartosh could be on the mound as the Cubs try to clinch a World Series victory is grotesque.  With the image of that in my head, combined with the Miller/Morgan commentary, I'll need two more beers to get to sleep tonight.  Which, come to think of it, isn't necessarily a bad thing.
