Open Thread: Cubs vs. Astros, Thursday 9/13, 7:05 CT

Is anyone besides me worried after the Cardinals completed an 0-7 road trip with a 5-4 loss in Cincinnati this afternoon? They're now 30-44 on the road -- but 39-31 at home, and the Cubs have to go in there tomorrow to play a four-game series, a series in which it's almost imperative for the Cubs to win three of four.

This season is laying out a lot like the 2003 season, with five critical games, including a split doubleheader, vs. St. Louis. The only difference, of course, is that this year the games are in St. Louis instead of at Wrigley Field.

I guess the bottom line is -- just go out and win, tonight and over the weekend, and don't worry about anyone else's results. Incidentally, just so I get it right this time, the Cubs' record since June 2 is 52-40 -- and yes, that still is the best record in the National League since that date. Second is the Rockies at 50-39.

Onward. Minor bit of (mostly meaningless) info: the winner of tonight's game takes the season series (currently 7-7) between the Cubs and Astros.

 Today's Starting Pitchers
Steve Trachsel
 S. Trachsel
Cubs
vs. Woody Williams
 W. Williams
Astros
6-10 W-L 8-14
4.78 ERA 4.93
48 SO 99
71 BB 51
16 HR 30
vs. Hou -- vs. Cubs
As long as both of tonight's pitchers have been around -- they have combined for 736 major league starts -- they have faced each other only twice before tonight, on May 17, 2001, and August 8, 2006; on both occasions Williams was a Padre and Trachsel a Met. Each won one of the games -- and this will likely be the last time they'll face each other, because I don't see either of these pitchers in the major leagues in 2008.

Trachsel gets another shot after getting pounded on Sunday in Pittsburgh. If he gets hit hard again, it could be his last major league start. In three lifetime starts at the Juice Box he is 2-0 in 18 IP, with a 3.50 ERA. Brad Ausmus, of all people, is 10-for-21 vs. Trachsel (.476/.593/.810, a double, 2 HR), and he has faced Craig Biggio 59 times (16-for-54, 3 doubles, 2 triples, 4 HR, 8 walks).

Williams has had a crappy year, but you wouldn't know it from the four starts he's had against the Cubs (24 IP, 2.25 ERA, 1-1). Jason Kendall is 18-for-38 (.474/.535/.605, two doubles, a HR) vs. Williams, and Aramis Ramirez, still hot, is 14-for-45 (.311/.354/.489, two doubles, two HR). Also watch for Cliff Floyd, who hit a monster HR last night, to tee off (vs. Williams: 11-for-31, .355/.412/.581, a double, 2 HR).

Today's cable-only game is on EI, and at the Mediacenter.

Cards
will not lose 11 in a row and that's what worries me. They're going home and ending he losing will be on their minds. 3 of 4 would be nice but I'll be happy with 2 of 4. Nothing is more dangerous than a team who just finished a road losing streak.

Yeah, I was worried about the same thing.
The Cubs have played well in St. Louis the last couple of years. Keep it up.

This year at Busch III
They are 4-1. The Cubs have pretty much turned the tables around on the Cardinals. The Cards used to own our number for a period of time, but now it's us owning theirs.

Who says the Cards won't lose 11 in a row?
We're just the ones to make them do it.

But, if they don't take three of four, their season is done. So, if we go .500, we win. If we go .750, we bury them. If we sweep, we probably drive LaRussa, Duncan and Jocketty to another team.

But watch out. If we win the first two, they will throw at us.

If that happens, it's time for Carmen the Pig to earn his salary and put Pujols on his ever-expanding rump.

Whether he gets up on his own power is irrelevant to me.

Larussa....
I think if the Sox just gave Guillen an extension for having the worst record in baseball, I don't think the Cards are going to can a guy who won them the big on last year. Just a hunch though.

by hawkeyenation on Sep 13, 2007 4:23 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yeah, but LaRussa
Is mouthing his way out of town, talking about how he isn't sure he wants to keep going there...

Fans on some of their boards seem to think he's going to manage the Reds next year.

by lancaster99 on Sep 13, 2007 4:28 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

That would be interesting.....
I could see him making an impact on that team. Not as much as Lou has, but they certainly would do well. But haven't they done pretty well since the manager change there anyways?

Anyhow, I agree that maybe it's time for him to move on, I just don't think they would push him out the door. If the DUI wasn't enough to get him the boot, keeping a team afloat and in contention that has been ravaged by injury and a front office that refused to get quality pitching help probably won't get him the boot either.

by hawkeyenation on Sep 13, 2007 4:34 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Don't Be Surprised...
... if Bob Brenley leaves the booth and joins the Reds as the manager.

I have grown to love the tandem of Len and Bob.  However, with his knowledge, Bob deserves to manage again - and, I think he really wants to.

If it does happen... bring back new part-owner of the Chicago Cubs... Steve Stone!

by initram on Sep 13, 2007 4:55 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Watching the Redbirds they are down
They are down offensively in all they have is Pujols and a mentally disturbed Ankiel and an old Edmunds. Pitching is worse.

LaRussa will come out and try to rattle Z, my guess they will first take pitches and if Z is getting called strike one, strike two they will suddenly start to hit his first pitch. They will also throw at someone, probably Kendall as he crowds the plate or Ramirez as he is diving.

Cubs need to mentally stay focused and pound their pitching and make them hit strikes. The Redbirds will be tired the 2nd game of the DH so I would pitch Lilly against them in the first game. If they lose the first two games I promise you that they will throw at the Cubs. Warning to all after the first beaning. Beat them....three of four is all that is necessary, sweeping a four game set is almost statistically impossible but they are due for a 10 game losing streak.

BTW Houston came home with a 7 game losing streak and the Cubs had them down until the 11th inning.

Cards may throw at hitters since game 1
Trying to bait Cubs players into a fight or retaliation, which will get them injured or suspended in the thick of the division race.

Two alternate ways to deal with that: (1) Bean them first and when the warnings come, LaRussa can't retaliate. If he does, it's his pitcher who gets suspended. The risk there is that LaRussa may order that our hitter be injured when beaned. (2) My choice would be to wait until beaned. If that happens, Ohman or Pignatiello are the best candidates to retaliate and take the suspension for the good of the team.

Do You Think...
... that the umpires, knowing the importance of the series, and the heated rivalry that exists, will start this four game series off with warnings?!?

Nervous
I've been thinking this same thing since I heard the Cards lost today. They aren't going to lose 11 in row, they aren't going to lose 4 in a row at home, they aren't going to lose 4 to the Cubs, and they aren't going to give up when they're playing the Cubs. So, this series has me nervous.

One exception to
"Nothing is more dangerous than a team who just finished a road losing streak..." and that would be a team that just finished a road winning streak.

A team playing poorly is apt to keep playing that way.

Where is that list?  Anyone got a quick link?

No playoff roster has been set yet.
Nor does any such roster have to be set before October 1. Let's get there first!

Sorry got confused
I remember people saying that Ray King couldn't be on the Brewers playoff roster but that's because he wasn't on the 40 man roster on Sept. 1st.

I just figured that meant the playoff roster was set on that day, but it's set later on based only on who was on the 40-man roster on Sept. 1st.  That's a piece of cake to understand.

Any word on if Lou is going to put Samarzdija in the bullpen for the doubleheader?  We might need him to eat up an inning or two if the game is deemed to be 'over' one way or the other.

Samardzija?
Haven't heard anything about him at all.

The Cubs have 16 pitchers on the active roster. That ought to be enough, wouldn't you think?

by Al on Sep 13, 2007 4:50 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I don't think you need...
... to be on the 40-man roster to make the playoffs, per se.  I think you need to be in the organization by 9/1 in order to be considered to be a part of the playoff roster.

I also think that each round you go to you can re-set your 25 guys that you want on the roster (e.g., NLDS, NLCS, WS).  You can also replace a position player for position player in the event of an injury.

by initram on Sep 13, 2007 4:57 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Correct!
The Cubs have four extra slots to play with because they had four players on the DL on August 31. Thus they can "replace" four existing players with anyone who was on the 40-man roster on August 31.

We'll see what happens. I can't see more than an 11-man pitching staff in the postseason, since you need no more than four starters, and could even get away with three if necessary. (Only four pitchers: Wood, Prior, Zambrano, Clement -- started for the Cubs in the 2003 postseason).

by Al on Sep 13, 2007 5:02 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

By The 4 Extra Slots...
... are you referring to folks that are on the 40-man roster?  If so, don't they need to be on the 60 day DL to be taken off the list?

Last I checked, I thought it was two... in essence the vacancies left by Scott Moore and Rocky Cherry for Trachsel.  There was also the Buck Coats deal to the Reds, Monroe, Koyie Hill (who ended up staying with the organization), the purchase of Sam Fuld and Kevin Hart...

At a quick count, I think we still have one open spot on the 40-man roster.

by initram on Sep 13, 2007 5:08 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

There is the eligible roster
being to be eligible for a playoff roster you have to be on the 40-man roster. Cubs will more than likely go with a 11-man pitching staff; starters being Zambrano, Lilly, Marquis, Hill and 7 relievers: Dempster, Marmol, Howry, Eyre, Wuertz, Marshall, Wood.

Position players being 12 outside the catchers of Kendall and Blanco; D-Lee, DeRosa, Theriot, Ramirez, Soriano, Jones, Floyd, Ward, Monroe, Fontenot, Pie and TBD...

choices Murton, Cedeno, Soto? i am putting in Soto because if he gets some more AB's and continues to hit big, he would be a more valuable short series PH than the others who redundant or offer only injury backup.

You Don't Think...
... Trachsel will be in the mix?? I think he will be instead of Marshall.  Marshall may be the odd man out.

Also, I remember an article about a month ago where they were suggesting that Wood may be the bubble guy as well.  After seeing the names that you've listed, considering that Wood has been to the dance a couple of times (and big in 2003), and also the fact that Ohman cooked his own goose since the article was written, I agree that Wood makes it.

Lastly, the last guy in my opinion should be Murton.  Monroe likely doesn't deserve to be there, but he was in the WS last year.  Experience is going to mean a lot to Piniella.

It's where all Cub valuables and secrets are kept.
They are written onto napkins, hidden in sunflower seed wrappers, and zipped into the outside pocket of the famed "hello kitty" pink backpack.  To be protected to the death by the most cherubic member of the bullpen.

I like that better than "not submitted yet."

I don't agree
I watch 95% of their games, and they are a scrappy, never say die team. Every now and then they get blown out, but they come from behind late in games like nobody's business. Will Chris Youn batting leadoff hit 30+ HR's again next year? Maybe not, but they are on a roll and strange as it may seem, very few fans here in the desert are on their bandwagon. They have been in 1st or a couple games out for most of the year and without a lot of fanfare. I remember before the season began that Buster Olney from ESPN predicted them to go to the WS.

Let's not get ahead of ourselves
Let's deal with the Cardinals when we get there.  Today the main concern has to be beating a mediocre pitcher who has eaten our lunch this year.  Here's hoping we treat Woody Williams like the rest of the league does.

Lou maps out rotation
By Paul Sullivan, 12: 43 p.m.

Lou Piniella unveiled the Cubs pitching plans for the next couple weeks on Monday, and, as expected, it was full of surprises.

Steve Trachsel will return to pitch Thursday in Houston on three days rest, with Carlos Zambrano being pushed back to Friday to start the opener of the four-game series in St. Louis on five days rest.

"I don't think we really have much of a choice," Piniella said of using Trachsel on three days rest, after he lasted only two innings on Sunday in Pittsburgh. "He didn't throw many pitches (47), so it's not like he pitched six or seven innings."

On Sunday, Piniella had said he was leaning toward starting Zambrano on Thursday on his usual four days of rest, but obviously changed his mind. After Sunday's poor outing by Trachsel, Piniella said he'd have a glass of wine and think about the rotation.

The result is that Zambrano and Ted Lilly will also pitch on three days rest next week against Cincinnati, as Piniella goes with his two horses down the stretch. But Piniella also said he'd only use use Zambrano and Lilly on three days rest, which they haven't done all year.

"We wont have to, but to get everything back on track, we're going to have to bring both back on three days rest," Piniella said. "Both Zambrano and Lilly have done it before, and we're only asking them to do it once."

So here's the tentative schedule of Cubs starters through Sept. 20th, subject to change:

Tuesday at Houston: Jason Marquis

Wednesday at Houston: Rich Hill

Thursday at Houston: Steve Trachsel

Friday at St. Louis: Carlos Zambrano

Saturday at St. Louis: Ted Lilly and Sean Marshall (order to be determined).

Sunday at St. Louis: Marquis

Monday vs. Cincinnati: Hill

Sept. 18 vs. Cincinnati: Zambrano

Sept. 19 vs. Cincinnati: Lilly

Sept. 20: Off Day

Piniella said he'd stay on rotation the rest of the way, but didn't get specific, so it's unknown if Trachsel or Marshall will get another start after next Saturday. If they don't, here's how it looks down the stretch:

Sept. 21 vs. Pittsburgh: Marquis

Sept. 22 vs. Pittsburgh: Hill

Sept. 23 vs. Pittsburgh: Zambrano

Sept. 24: Off day

Sept. 25 at Florida: Lilly

Sept. 26 at Florida: Marquis

Sept. 27 at Florida: Hill

Sept. 28 at Cincinnati: Zambrano

Sept. 29 at Cincinnati: Lilly (3 days rest)

Sept. 30 at Cincinnati: Marquis (3 days rest)

I can't wait for tonight's pitching match up
NOT Traschel vs Williams which promises to be a mess but
Maddux vs Wells. A Madog vs a Whale as oppossed to the Human Rain Delay vs a washed up guy who can apparently only beat the Cubs. Unlikely Maddux or Wells makes it past 6 (against
AARP rules now) but at least it should be FUN to watch and even better, FASTER. I think there is a better than even chance that the Padres/Dodgers game which starts TWO HOURS after the Cubs/Astros, ENDS earlier. It is is gonna be a LONG night Cub fans so those of you with access to other games might want to check it out. I bet during a commercial break for the 10th pitching change ( both teams combined) of the Cubs/Astros
you could watch Maddux in particular pitch a complete inning.

Maddog will win his 346...
with Clemens hurt and stuck at 352...Maddux should get to 347 or 348 this year...another 15 year win and he is up in the 363 land...with an option and 10 more wins Maddux approaches Mathewson and Alexander a century later....

by Neifi Puppy on Sep 13, 2007 8:44 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Quality starts are
a ridiculous statistic.  Just because Trachsel didn't go 6 innings, his start wasn't "quality"?  He held the opposition to 2 runs.  I'm tired of the pointless Trachsel-bashing.  If it were Marshall who lasted 5 and gave up 2 ER, people would be praising him for how well he did.  Seriously, people here are predisposed to hate Trachsel because he took Marshall's spot.

Look at it this way:  If a pitcher has a "quality start" every time out, he pitches 6 innings and gives up 3 runs, then he has an approximate ERA of 4.50.  Frankly, I don't think that's a great ERA.  And I wouldn't want all of my pitchers to have an ERA of 4.50.  It's just a worthless stat that people spout out to sound good.

Am I a Trachsel lover?  No.  I really don't understand why the Cubs acquired him.  Do I hate Marshall?  No.  I actually enjoy watching him pitch.  Yet I do not assume to know the reasoning for getting him (and I'm not sure they know why they got him, even), but I'll just sit back and hope that he does well.  And you know what?  He DID do pretty well today.

BTW Drew, I wasn't purposefully spouting off at you, your comment just happened to be the one I responded to.  I was tired of all the ridiculous "Trachsel sucks" banter.

by jjmarie30 on Sep 14, 2007 1:28 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

not so ridiculous
It's only a metric and don't forget you're taking the maximum ERA allowable under that metric. It reads: 6.0 IP or MORE, 3 ER or LESS.

I emplore you to go to your favourite sports stats site and look at team's pct with and w/o quality starts; specifically the Cubs.

The numbers are notably different.

Very interesting battle ahead ..
Forget NY and Boston. The real blood is gonna flow in St. Louis. It's drifting out of reach from the Cards, and this is going to be a make or break series for them. The real pressure is on them, and I think this past Monday is a sign that they may not have the will any longer. Maybe the pride factor will kick in.

Just kidding.  It is very nice to see the power hitters finally displaying the power they're supposed to be displaying.  If Soriano, Lee, Ramirez, and Floyd can have big months and DeRosa, Theriot, Jones, and others can contribute here and there offensively (and if the pitching can remain solid), we might have ourselves a really interesting month (and maybe more).

I don't know about carrying a team...
that sounds like hyperbole to me.  But he can certainly be a great 3rd or 4th option offensively.  If he's the 2005 version of Floyd the rest of the way, that will be a very good thing.

another start for Traxie??
...might depend on how Marshall looks can't see a 3-man rotation unless desperate...wouldn't mind seeing Traxie start a game vs. Cincy with Marshall backing him up...pushing Zambrano and then Lilly up with three days' rest may not be necessary, esp. if Cubs take a game or more lead in the division, there's a risk involved.

Speaking of risk here comes Kerry Wood nice to see him get a good outing...Have Marmol gettin ready in bullpen along with Wuertz and whoever just in case he's wild.

how lou starts an inning with his old pitcher in place and then replaces him when the pinch hitter is announced, forcing the other manager to make a tough decision.  I don't remember Dusty ever pulling that trick.

I agree...
it's the little things like that that differentiate him from Dusty.  Well, that and actually managing the ballclub and not just hanging out with the guys in the dugout.

Ultimately of course, those things are only very marginally beneficial.  But it's better to be marginally beneficial than just purely detrimental (or at least in no way beneficial) like Dusty was.

by SouthernCub on Sep 13, 2007 9:15 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

So that makes Soriano, what, 2 for 15 this series?  It sure feels like he's been popping the ball up a lot.

Is it me or is Fonzi hacking with impunity now?
He's always been the free swinger, but dang, it seems like he's like been given complete reign to hack away. I know that Lou said nothing's gonna change now, but man .. it seems like the brakes are just off on him now.

Agreed
He just doesn't seem to get into anysort of rhythm lately.  I find myself thinking "what a lousy at bat" all the time when he's up there.  If he could be consistent it would go a long way to helping our offense.

by Basman on Sep 13, 2007 9:25 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

he had much better plate discipline earlier on
Now he's just swinging away at whatever. I wish he'd take a little more bead on his AB's. That's not a good sign for the future.

The coaches got to reign that in on him. I hope Lou's fatalism doesn't just consign Fonzi's free swinging to a assessment of "who they are."  He can and has had better AB's.

Go Fonzie!
You keep up that .900 OPS clip you got going this month, and ignore these guys.  Amazing.

Meanwhile Theriot and Kendall are both below .600 OPS this month, but get about a tenth the number of complaints.  When Fontenot was slumping at a .480 OPS clip in July, he still didn't get as many complaints as Fonzie does.

Trachsel's Last Start?
As Al mentioned in his game thread, this might have been Trachsel's last career start, as he could certainly retire after this year. After seeing him tonight and in his other two starts, I'm kind of hoping that's the case. We'll see how Marshall does on Saturday, but at this point I have much more confidence in young Sean delivering a quality start. I know Trachsel picked up the win tonight, but he had to get out of jams in every inning.  I was all in favor of taking him out after four innings. He seemed lucky to get through five.

Additionally, after this weekend it looks like the Cubs won't need that fifth starter again until the last week of the season, against either the Marlins or Reds. So even if Trachsel were to get another start, it likely would not be until the very end of the season. Hopefully if he is starting at that point, we already have this division wrapped up.

by ms9av on Sep 13, 2007 10:24 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

I agree
Although I wouldn't say his win was mostly due to luck.

He's a pro and figured out how to get out of jambs, even without his best stuff. I like to give the guy credit.

However, I'm going to guess this is his last start.

Not a bad way to end a career, really.

Air Force beats TCU!!!
The USAF Academy just defeated the TCU Horned Frogs 20-17 in OT, up in Colorado Springs.  A huge win for the team and they are now 3-0 on the season.

A beautiful site to see the Cadets rush the field, especially as an enlisted member of the USAF.  Even better was the huge display of class by TCU, who stayed on the field while it was being rushed in order to pay respect while the Air Force band sung their Alma Matter, the 3rd verse of the AF Song.

No, Air Force was not in a bowl game.
You're thinking of Navy.

Air Force went 4-8 last year, forcing the resignation of long-time coach Fisher DeBerry.  The season was capped off by a 38-14 loss at TCU.

To come from last season's 38-14 destroyment to beating the same team this year is huge.  So is the 3-0 start that includes an impressive win at Utah.

Oh, Air Force and TCU are both in the Mountain West.

Nice win tonight
Trachsel did exactly what was expected of him. Not great, but completely serviceable. Of course, it helps when you score four in the first inning. If indeed that was his last big-league start, it was a good way to go out. Although I suspect he'll start at least once more (a lot of that depends on how Marshall pitches Saturday, I suspect).

Also good to see the home-run ball figure so prominently. Considering Lee and DeRosa weren't in the lineup, this was a good victory, and not just because it puts the Cubs back in first place by themselves.

I avoided the game thread on purpose tonight, and I'm glad I did. Some of the early comments about Trachsel were, again, way out of line. We keep asking the Cubs to "man up" here down the stretch. It would be nice if some of the posters here would take the same approach and not sweat the vagaries of baseball so much.

Oh, and before I forget, it was kind of sad to see  Biggio in his last game against the Cubs. Of course, I can say that now, since he isn't what he used to be. He had a great career, all with one team, and I'm sure he'll have a place in Cooperstown some day.

Appropriately, his final AB against the Cubs was a strikeout against Wood. After all, Biggio had a front-row seat for Wood's 20K performance so many years ago (too many) in Chicago.

Onward to St. Louis, home of the self-proclaimed "greatest fans in baseball." May they choke on that salutation this weekend.

NBF...
Nice summary.

As I was on a plane, I only caught the last three inning of the game on my PDA.  Was thrilled to see Trachsel come through and the bats come through with an early lead.

I agree that it would be great to step on the throats of the RedBirds. But you know they will be dangerous, having lost so many games in a row.  The Cubs will have to focus and take each game one a time.

This is a great chance to bury LaRussa and this team for good.  I hope Z gets us off to a great start.

insomniac thoughts
boy there are too many nervous nellies out there, enjoy the journey and not the presumption of winning before it is done. Trac pitched as he was brought here to do, two quality starts so to speak, rest a tired arm in Marshall so the
CUBS could also start a front line pitcher in a big DH, for each game is now crucial. As someone said the difference of one game winning or losing can be a world of difference, just recall '04 or '03.

Floyd is now reported to have finally fixed a flaw in his swing, he was round housing instead of dropping the head of the bat on the ball. He could suddenly get hot these next two weeks and hit for the power we expected.

Wood is a reclamation project and a real professional out in the pen, he has had only two bad outings and will be influential down the stretch.

Fontenot played a good game and is getting his stroke back, this is good since he will be needed down the stretch too. I wouldn't be surprised to see Ward play the first game at 1B as a bruised knee is really swollen if it cuts into Lee's mobility, shows how big the play was on Weds.

Cubs won the series with Houston 8-7...winning two of three and could bury a team wanting to be buried this weekend. Milwaukee is not going away so coming home with 78 wins will be important, getting to 80 before their off day on Thurs will be important and unless Milwaukee hits the wall in Atl they will need to win 10-11 down the stretch to take the division.

Milw-09-23-98--Brown in for defense--bases loaded--flyball--HE DROPPED THE BALL!!!NO NO NO, cubs lose 8-7

A thought
As nice as it is to see Soriano hitting leadoff homers, wouldn't it be better if he were batting fifth and these homers were coming with men on base?

He had three
opportunities with men on base last night: In the first he came up with the bases loaded and flied out, in the 6th he struck out with men on first and third, and in the 8th he grounded into a double play with a man on first.

He's clearly most comfortable leading off a ballgame.  His numbers with nobody on base are significantly better than his numbers with baserunners.

Yep
He was 1-4 with a HR out of the leadoff spot last night.  Pretty good night.

How on earth
did he come up with men on in the first as the leadoff hitter?

That in and of itself is amazing and if he can truly do this, then I am fine with him in leadoff.

True
I guess that explains why he has barely 50 RBI.
