Open Thread: Cubs vs. Cardinals, Friday 9/14, 7:10 CT

The Cubs have had several "biggest series in four years" already this summer.

This one certainly ranks as the biggest. After struggling for several weeks, the Cubs are now on a nice 4-out-of-6 run; their 53-40 record since June 2 is still best in the NL -- and one-half game better than the Red Sox record since that date.

A few miscellaneous stat notes: the 20 HR the Cubs have hit in 13 September games is more than they hit the entire months of July (13) and August (19). Keep this up and, as we saw the last two days, good things can follow. They are 8-4 vs. St. Louis this year, 4-1 at Busch Stadium III.

Site note: please head over to this diary if you have expressed interest in the BCB shirts that we discussed last month. In order to get the order fulfilled, azweber needs you to send your money in soon. Thanks.

Fun for today: Bruce Miles speculates on what might have been if the Cubs had actually won, instead of lost, in 2003.

 Today's Starting Pitchers

21 HR 11
vs. StL -- vs. Cubs
Z threw well in his last start, something the Cubs desperately need him to do in order to win this thing. He's supposed to be the #1 guy, the "ace". He's owned the Cardinals, not only this year (2-0, 2.03), but in his career (7-4, 2.45, in 17 starts and one relief appearance). He's handled Albert Pujols (.205/.294/.455 in 44 AB) well. Go get 'em!

Adam Wainwright is the Cardinals' best starter -- some would say their ONLY starter, as the rest of the rotation is converted relievers and castoffs and minor leaguers. The Cubs have beat the living daylights out of him three times already this year, including two times in St. Louis (0-2, 11.44 ERA in 2007 vs. the Cubs). Jacque Jones (.462/.533/.615 in 13 AB) and Ryan Theriot (6-for-10) have hit him particularly hard.

Today's game is once again cable-only. It's also available on EI, and at the Mediacenter.

"Z" I believe
is the key tonight. Get us a good solid start, don't go to the bullpen early ( 4 games 3 days )and that important first win of a series, and oh, put the Cards back another game.

Lets have a good night Cubs.

Thanks for the link, Al
I tried to have some fun with that (sore) subject. Our "dead tree" edition, as you call it, has a really nice presentation. We separate my fictional news stories from my commentary with italic type. Our desk and graphics people did a great job.

Wish...
... they could make that sort of presentation on the website. It was clear what you were doing, but they could have set off the "what if" from the "reality" text in some way.

Fun article!

War of the Worlds syndrome
In reality much of what was written would have happened. Living with Baker and McPhail would be horrible, plus Sosa would still be here,

Ahh... but would it have been worth it?
Would you be willing to live with Baker, McPhail, and of course His Samminess, if it meant parading that World Series trophy around Wrigley Field, Chicago, and John Kass' desk?

What price, a Cubs fan's soul?

The point is...
... that if the Cubs had indeed won, that the management in charge would have produced the winner we all have longed for.

No matter what successes or failures they would have had in the future, they'd always have had that title, just as Kenny Williams and Ozzie Guillen have theirs.

by Al on Sep 14, 2007 7:04 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

But
they didn't win, in part because the management in charge wasn't good enough.  The bullpen on that team was too thin and Dusty just isn't a good enough manager to win the big one, IMO.

Bruce Miles' Article
Kent Mercker isn't the only one who has had a big F-U for Stone.

What that article really does is spotlight how much different, like night and day, it is for the Cubs with Piniella as opposed to Baker. Who would have thought a guy in his early to mid 60's would be such a breath of fresh air for this team? The turn around has really been remarkable.

It's interesting that Bruce
Doesn't tell us what the Cubs did against the Yankees.

Also, it's total fiction to write "spectacular catch" and "made by" and "Moises Alou" in the same sentence.

You'll never convince me Alou catches the ball anyway.

I might not be on much tonight. I am literally going to be frothing at the mouth by the first pitch.

So, for Al's sanity, I'm going to try to stay away from my computer.

Cubs vs Red Sox in 03
I can't recall if it was SI or ESPN but one of them did a great bit
at the time of the Cubs/Red Sox World Series that never happened. The thing I remember best and still cracks me up was an irate Pedro Martinez tossing Darren Baker ( who had wandered on to the field) into the stands where he is miraculously caught by J.T Snow.

I don't remember that...
but I do remember the SI issue from 1994 where they played out the rest of the season and the Cubs ended up winning in 7 games.  I don't remember the details, but I'm sure it's still sitting in my closet at my grandparents' house.

I generally tread over there for cheap good food.
Enjoy the free pizza, I am econimizing with leftovers to cover
my trips to Chicago & Cincy for the following two weekends
Anyway other NYC folks lets get together before the end of the season.

What to watch for with Z
It was noticed by advanced scouts that for some reason Z's arm slot had fallen against left handers going lower and flattening out his ball.

If Z is right, he will have elevated his arm slot and throw his fastball and slider that dips out of one plain into another.

If he is wrong he gets hit or he can't throw strikes.

More thoughts...
Percota has the Cubs 58% chance of winning the division, Brewers 40%.

I have gone through the schedule and it appears to me that 83 wins would demand a playoff (if lucky) and 84 wins also would demand a playoff...

Cubs will need to exceed 85 wins and 86 will assure a division title of probably 2 games...

My thoughts are that the Brewers will now go 10-7 (taking 2/3 against Cincinnati & @Houston, losing 3/4  @Atlanta, sweeping the crashing Cards, and then splitting the four with SD.

That would mean the Cubs will need to go 11-5, 3/4 @StL, 2/3 Cinci, 2/3 Pitts, 2/3 @FL and 2/3 @Cincinnati. 11-5 wins it outright with 2game difference.

Winning this game is key to the finish

It isn't "rose colored"
To make a statement like that after one inning is, dare I say, idiotic.

Maybe by the sixth or seventh, if Wainwright has mowed down the Cubs in order, it might be more appropriate.

Why don't you relax and enjoy the game?

by Not Bruce Froemming on Sep 14, 2007 7:43 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I am enjoying it....quite a bit in fact
Perhaps you have never witnessed a good pitcher struggle in the first inning and then get stronger as the game goes along....

Isnt this a forum for commentary not personal critisims?

Let me get back to you, will ya, Charlie? I got a guy on the other line asking about some white walls.

All commentary isn't created equally
If you say something that's dead wrong, I'm free to point that out.

Someone disagreed with me below. And he was free to disagree, too.

Like I said, why don't you wait until the seventh inning or so before you call this one over, which is basically what you did in the bottom of the second? At least then you'd have more of a point.

Sheesh.

by Not Bruce Froemming on Sep 14, 2007 7:49 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

did you see "its over" in my commentary?
No you didnt, you made a uninformed assumtion on my commentary combined with a personal attack.
Let me get back to you, will ya, Charlie? I got a guy on the other line asking about some white walls.

That certainly was the implication
in your post.

If you don't want to open yourself up for personal attack, then you shoud post something other than a hanging curve ball.

by Not Bruce Froemming on Sep 14, 2007 7:54 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

And if you can't take the trouble
to at least spell the pitcher's name correctly, maybe you should think about a few other things before you post, too.

I don't think that's the case
but enough.

I forgot how much fun it was NOT to read the game threads the last two days, and how much fun it was to read the hyperventilation over nothing afterward.

I think I'll go back to doing that.

And you still can't spell the pitcher's name correctly.

Soriano's
stupid steal attempt could loom large.  That had no chance and it cost the Cubs at least 1 run in that inning.

It was worth a try
And if he made it, he'd look like a genius. Molina made a nice play.

by Not Bruce Froemming on Sep 14, 2007 7:38 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

No
It wasn't worth a try.  Molina's the best in the league at throwing out runners and Soriano's burst hasn't been there since the injuries.  And Wainwright was struggling with his command.  It was stupid.  Very stupid.

by cubsbak on Sep 14, 2007 7:40 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Perhaps
His burst has been coming back but hasn't been seen up to this point. If Wainwright was struggling with his command, that's even more reason to do it, since odds are Molina wouldn't be able to make a decent throw.

It was not very stupid. Relax.

by Not Bruce Froemming on Sep 14, 2007 7:42 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

It was stupid.
Very stupid.  His burst obviously hasn't been coming back.  You could see it in the replay.  He was out by a mile and the pitch was a breaking ball.  And Molina is the best in the league.  It had no chance to work.  You're absolutely wrong here.

by cubsbak on Sep 14, 2007 7:44 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I wouldn't term it "very stupid"

Not in that situation
With two out, absolutely.

But with one out, I have to think that if we can all spot that the HP ump has a tight strike zone, then the advance scouts know that as well.

Plus, it's one of the flying Molina brothers back there, not Mike Piazza or Jason Kendall.

With two out, yes
With Ramirez up, I'd do it.  The odds of a CS are more profitable than the odds of (Ramirez getting an XBH OR Ramirez and Floyd both getting singles/walks)

Worst case is that Ramirez leads off the 2nd.

My bad
didn't want to kick start anything. My point is I hate after the game to look back and realize the first inning was the key to the game. It's so obvious when something comes late -- but early in the game, people tend to shrug it off.

All 9 are meaningful.

by San Diego Smooth Jazz Man on Sep 14, 2007 8:39 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

No, SDSJM
Your point is a valid one -- one that, in hindsight, can been seen.

My problem was with people essentially calling it after the second inning goes 1-2-3.

I think I even pointed out that jb should wait until the sixth or seventh to make such an observation, if it's to have any validity.

You're one of the best posters around here, so coming from you, now, this makes more sense.

Last night was a good example. Woody Williams got his act together after the first -- but that inning, essentially -- decided the game.

Greg Maddux made a career out of that. So many times, he sucked in the 1st -- but if he was able to wriggle off the hook, so to say -- he'd control the game.

...give Traxie another start Wed. instead of pushing Z up a day...gotta win now go up 1.5 be huge with just 15 to play...don't trust Demp with a one-run lead anyway hope we add another.

Theriot's avg. really dipping below .270 now hope he gets one of DH off...Cedeno has some pop bet he'd get some hits if got a few days in there...granted, like Theriot's overall heads-up play but he's burnt toast at plate lately.

With Pujols leading off, leave Z in
I think it's better to assume that you're going to only get 55-60 pitches out of Z on Wednesday and 40 pitches out of Traschel, than let somebody other than Z pitch to Pujols to start the 9th.

If Pujols gets on, pull Z then.  Otherwise, leave him in.

Of course, if Kendall triples or homers, then I pull Z.
