A Marquis Experience

Anyone else have fingernails a lot shorter than they were at 1:00 this afternoon?

The Cubs' 4-2 win over the Cardinals was what Jack Brickhouse (and many, many other announcers) would have called a nail-biter, and I'm not too proud to say that I was nibbling on mine pretty good while the Cubs were leaving baserunners all over the state of Missouri.

That wasn't really a very good exhibition of timely hitting, was it? Here's the litany of LOB, fourteen all told, by inning:

1st: 2
2nd: 1
3rd: 2
4th: 2
5th: 2
6th: 2
7th: 2
8th: 1

And finally, in the ninth inning, the Cubs stranded no one -- but only because they went out 1-2-3. Thank heavens for Matt Murton's three-run homer and Ronny Cedeno's RBI single in the second inning -- and still, they left Cedeno stranded in that inning with two out.

I shouldn't complain about this, really, because a win's a win, right? Especially when the Cardinals were just about as bad at leaving runners on base, leaving eleven, including leaving the bases loaded in the 7th, with the tying run aboard, and also leaving that same tying run on base in the bottom of the 8th. All four Cub pitchers -- Jason Marquis, Carlos Marmol (who didn't really have it today), Bob Howry, and even Ryan Dempster -- pitched themselves into, and then out of, trouble all afternoon.

Marquis threw five very, very good innings and a sixth that wasn't quite so good, and managed to wheeze into the seventh, allowing a baserunner that Marmol let score (only the fifth of 35 inherited runners he's let touch the plate all season). Marmol walked the bases loaded after that, but Howry got Jim Edmonds to pop up to end the inning.

Then Howry had his own control troubles in the 8th, allowing a walk and two hits and a run, and thank heavens for the little guy, Sam Fuld, who has yet to have a major-league at-bat in his seven appearances (five as a pinch-runner, and this, his fourth appearance in the field), made a spectacular running catch of a fly ball that was probably foul off the bat of Scott Spiezio -- still, it got the Cubs an out when they badly needed one, and prevented Spiezio from getting another chance to get a hit off a pitching staff that was handing them out like scratch-off cards at Wrigley Field.

And then, Dempster-bashers, Ryan Dempster came in, recorded an easy groundout by Rick Ankiel, allowed a single that Ronny Cedeno might have stopped if he was, well, a bit better player, and then got pinch-hitter So Taguchi (that shows you how far Edmonds has fallen; a year or two ago, would Tony LaRussa ever have batted for Edmonds in a situation like that? I was thinking that we might have seen the last of Edmonds, because he'll be 38 years old next June, hasn't had a good year, and might wind up retiring as the Cardinals retool) to hit into a game-ending double play, this time Cedeno making the play, shoveling the ball to Mark DeRosa, who whipped it accurately to Derrek Lee to end this game that we all desperately, pleadingly, wanted to end right then and there, two hours and fifty-nine minutes after it began.

And props today to Geovany Soto, who had his biggest offensive day as a major leaguer, going four-for-five with two doubles, and hitting a ball to the warning track in the opposite field for the only out he made, raising his average to .423 (11-for-26). On the telecast, if you didn't see it, Len and Bob discussed the possibility that Soto might be named to the postseason roster, and both agreed he probably would be, and I agree completely. Henry Blanco hasn't played since September 3, two weeks ago, and may still be bothered by the back trouble that had him out for almost three months. There will likely be a slot for another position player on any postseason roster, as you don't need 12 pitchers in the playoffs (four starters would do it, and the guy who's clearly odd-man-out from the 25-man roster on August 31 is Steve Trachsel; Sean Marshall would likely go to the bullpen for the postseason). I heartily endorse Soto for any postseason roster and I have to say, since I was one of those saying "don't rush him" while many of you were clamoring for his recall all August, he has won me over with his defense and his quick bat. Maybe we really do, at last, have a genuine power-hitting catching prospect.

Now that's a pleasant thought, isn't it? But that's something, perhaps, for the future, as well as the now.

In the meantime, this win gave the Cubs what they really needed in St. Louis, winning three of four (and winning the season series 11-5, with a 7-2 record in St. Louis), for all intents and purposes eliminating the Cardinals from playoff contention (seven games behind now with fourteen left for the Cardinals, we can now root for them to defeat the Brewers when they play them in Milwaukee during the season's final week).

The Brewers, meanwhile, maintained their one-game deficit by defeating the Reds 5-2 this afternoon in Milwaukee. That, the final game of a short three-game homestand for the Brewers, now negates any home/road advantage either the Cubs or Brewers might have had. The Cubs have six home games and six road games left. The Brewers have seven home games and seven road games left; the only advantage now may go to the Cubs, who have two off days while the Brewers have none, and the fact that the Brewers must finish their season at home against the Padres, who may still need those games very badly to make the postseason themselves (at this writing, they stand two games out of first place in the NL West, but lead the wild-card by 1.5 games over both the Phillies and Dodgers).

Wouldn't it be sweet if Greg Maddux helped the Cubs by beating the Brewers for San Diego, putting both teams into the playoffs?

Exhale a little, after four games completed in forty-five hours' time (and the Cardinals' Yadier Molina caught all thirty-six innings, rare in these times); the Cubs met their goal, won six of ten on the road trip (seven of eleven including the "road trip" to Wrigley Field), and now, they rest, and so can we, until they take the field tomorrow night against the Reds.

Keep the faith. The best is yet to come.

Edmonds was already out
Al - they had pulled Edmonds when he made the last out a couple of innings earlier.  Thus, the pitcher's spot was up.

I missed that.
My point stands, though -- would they have done that with Edmonds a year or two ago? No way.

Karma bites the Deadbirds
As mentioned on the post-game, the Cards chasing Marquis out of town could have been the difference in the division this year. If we didn't have him, and they had kept him, they'd be ahead of us now.

Wow. Thanks St. Louis.

The rotation fairy is not on our side
We get Arroyo and Harang TWICE in the last 12 games and Brewers avoided them . They also dodge Oswalt and  we get Gorzalony (sic). However it will get better. Both Hudson & Smoltz will pitch against them and I would say 90% chance they get Peavy, Young  & Maddux that final 4 games. Nothing is going to be easy. Remember root for the Braves to cling to their slim wild card hopes ( and they are damn slim) and for the Padres to be in the thick of BOTH the Wild Card & Division races.

I did not know the reason
I just saw that he was not scheduled and instead the Brewers get some rookie with several outings who has bad numbers and has only started once.  You would almost think Oswalt who has no love loss for the Cubs looked at the schedule and said
"Honey how does Wed Sept 18th work for  you?"

Not commenting on Oswalt
but as it stands with the Braves, etc... still being in it when the Brewers face 'em, I agree with Brenly's view that when a team is out of it, they play their prospects and it makes them much harder for a team trying to make the play-offs to beat that team.

When you play a team's regulars, you know what to expect.  When you play a bunch of AAA call-ups playing for a spot on the team next year, they are much harder to beat as you do not know how to play/pitch to them or what their soft spots are.  And they tend to have more energy.

...don't forget this is the problem the Cubs are going to face in the Reds, Pirates, Fish, etc...

Let's just hope our RISP average will pick up again after a tough week!!  Go CUBS!!

As of today,
no NL central team is eliminated, but I love seein' that Deadbird picture.

The TV broadcast also announced Trachsel as Wednesday night starter.

And Maddux is the greatest and all, but with our past and current history with SD, I'd rather see the eliminated Brewers stomp the Madres out of contention.

We are likely to play AZ regardless
The Padres MIGHT catch them for the division but in reality it is more likely the Padres get the Wild Card and I would MUCH rather play almost anyone than the Padres in the post season
Peavy, Young , Maddux, Hoffman, Who cares if their hitting is a little light?

I have mixed feelings about the Padres, Maddux and all myself
A have a lot of respect for the team and the orginization but those fans STILL drive me nuts. The Phillies would be a nice come back story though if THEY make the wild card the Cubs play the Mets in round one so it is all a crap shoot. Anyway no use thinking about who we play since we are LONG way from that.

IF the Cubs face either, it's gonna be a dogfight
And unfortunately, the bigger dogs showed up each time the Cubs played the Snakes and the Dodges. The Snakes are a hungry bunch.

And the ever accursed Mets won't be a picnic either. But if the Mets that played today come out to the ballpark and the Cubs face them, we will eat them alive. It was a blooper ridden nightmare today and the Phillies cleaned Sosa's clock in nice order.

Mets or D'Backs ( depending on which division the Wild Card

Last year, the 83-win Cardinals were 4-11 in the regular season against the three teams they played in the playoffs, including getting swept by the Tigers in interleague play.

Toss those records out on October 1.

I would like to avoid the Pads
as well, as I think our hitters would be more likely to really struggle with their staff.  With that said, whoever makes the playoffs from the central, should go in relatively loose, because no one would expect that team to do much in the playoffs.

ya but...
... while a win is a win, the runners left on base is why the Cubs aren't a few games away from clinching the NL Central. Hell, even over the last week or two, there have been a few games (last night included) when the Cubs have been unable to get a key hit, grounded into a key DP, and have, as a whole, left far too many runs on the bases.

So I'm happy to see the Cubs win, but I almost cringe when they load the bases with no one out because they seemingly can't even elevate a ball into the outfield to drive in a run via a sac fly.

So, just like the RedBirds got their
pitching groove in October, maybe the Cubs will find their RISP groove in October.

Let's just get there first!

We are tied with the Suds-boyz in the loss column, so we still have to win series to win this thing.  We have to start beating teams NOW that we have not been beating this year.  A good time to start showing that past records don't matter...don't you think?

If there are only
11 pitchers on a post-season roster, I'd like it to be:

Z
Teddy
Marquis
Hill
Dempster
Marmol
Howry
Eyre
Wood
Trachsel
Weurtz or Hart?

Marshall hasn't pitched well enough recently, IMO, to merit being in the post-season, and might have some stamina/health issues. Both Trachsel and Hart could be used in 2+ inning stints to save the bullpen horses for when they're really needed.

Trachsel
has relieved in only 1 qame during his tedious career. I can't see any possibility he'll be on the playoff roster.

Wuertz is not even a question
why so many have an issue with him is ridiculous, he ranks 2nd or 3rd in the league with inherented runners effectiveness. Hart is just finding out where he drops off his laundry and towels without PO'ing the locker room staff.

As for the 11th I am wondering if that is a luxury Cubs shouldn't afford and going with 10 as Eyre has recovered his effectiveness. Thus neither Trachsel nor Marshall make the team and I will say that I would rather have Ohman as the 11th pitcher instead of two starters who know nothing about relieving.

The 15 position players would then be:
Kendall/Soto catcher (Blanco goes DL)
Lee, DeRosa, Theriot, Ramirez, Fontenot
Soriano, Jones, Floyd, Pie, Murton, Monroe, Fuld, Cedeno. Thus the question comes down whether you will use Cedeno more than Marshall or Trachsel?

Yes.
Weurtz is a good pitcher and I'd definitely rather see Ohman on the roster if it were a chocie between him Trachsel and Marshall.  You bring up an excellent point with Cedeno.  I would incude Cedeno if he were a ehady player, a guy who bunts, takes lots of pitches, doesn't K or Ks with power, and if he were a little general in the field.  I am not bashing him here, just saying that I don't view Cedeno as a heady player, so the only thing he brings is speed and he's more likely to hurt you with his speed by making a blunder on the bases. So if I had to make that choice in your post then I'd go with another arm.

by Matt Allison on Sep 16, 2007 6:33 PM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

figured I forgot one...
that means do you keep Blanco (w/Soto) or Cedeno or Fuld or Ohman?  The question is for a short series. Often you play with an off day. You play situational baseball inning by inning even batter by batter.  Will Ohman provide you one or two outs or merely rust in the bullpen as Lou will turn to Marmol, Howry, Eyre, Wuertz or even Wood instead of using a LOOGY. Is Ohman really hurt or merely out of sync?

The Cubs as Hershiser has stated are not a team that is well put together, they have players playing out of the natural positions.

CF'er is really a LF'er, (3) RF'ers are really a LF'ers, sometimes the RF'er is also a 2B. A lot of changeable parts. So the idea is use them and possibly scratch a run or prevent a run.

It won't be Ohman.
There will be 11 pitchers. The extra body will be, in my opinion, either Blanco or Cedeno.

Cedeno
I think that Lou answered the question of whether or not Cedeno would be on the playoff roster on Saturday night.  When DeRo singled, Lou sent Sam Fuld in to PR instead of Cedeno, even though Cedeno would have had to come in and play 2B had the Cubs tied it up.  (Fontenot had already been used.)  Despite Cedeno's speed, Lou didn't trust him on the basepaths.

This game was again a testiment to fatique
The Cubs and Cards have played 20 games in 19 days and I am seeing it from Pujols not running out ground outs to Lee dinged up with a sore knee. The best part was that it was the Cubs bench who won the game with a timely 3-run HR and solid RBI single by Murton and Cedeno. But Soto also showed energy with a 4-hit game.

Cubs have 3 more games before the entire team can sleep in all day in their beds on Thursday. Tomorrow I can see Fontenot and Ward play 2B and 1B. Piniella might give Kendall another rest on Wednesday to give him a 2-day, along with Ramirez. It was good that Jones got a breather today also.

Fuld showed some glove and arm today also. Now Milwaukee returns to the road again going down to the bandbox in Houston and then off to Atlanta. I predict that they will go 4-3 on the trip so the Cubs need to go minimum 4-2...pushing the math to 82-74 versus 80-75 for the final week where the Brewers play another seven versus the Cubs six and a day off. There I can see the Brewers going 5-2 finishing 85-77, so the Cubs need to go 4-2 and win 86-76....and many of you nervous nellies will be hard to take it. My guess is that the Cubs clinch a tie on the 28th and win it 29th. But all i say is a big so what, it will be determined on the field.

BTW, that would put the Cubs 63-45 since June 1st and a .583 finish besting the entire league. This would make the Cubs a bona fide team in the playoffs.

Sort of...
...I can see the Cubs retaining Murton for 2008 but I do not know his contract status.  I know he makes nothing and if he's under control for another year then I'd bring him back similar to JJ in 2007.  Odds are Floyd and JJ won't be around next year.  But I agree that there is no way that Murton starts in LF in 2007 unless Soriano has off season accident.  But as for Soriano being a lock for 7 years in LF, I'd say maybe 2 more seasons tops before his body and skills are mediocre at best.  No question that Soriano is a lock to get paid as if he were a starting LF for an MLB team for the next 7 years, but he's going to burn out far before then.

by Chanman25 on Sep 16, 2007 6:16 PM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Totally.
Murton needs to hit the off-season with the goal of making himself into a good MLB RF, hire a coach, do whatever it takes.  I'd also try and learn 1B, too.  A guy in Murton's position needs to make himself more valuable.  Right now we all know what he does and he's still young enough where can improve.  I expect him to produce more power but he's got to get himself on the field.

by DudeVf11 on Sep 16, 2007 6:20 PM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

If
Murton is still here next year, I would like to see someone work with him on the importance of hitting the cutoff man. His defense is not been good and you have to be able to make tougher throws from RF. I would like to see him do well, but I think LF is where he needs to be. So I agree that the Cubs will at least try to trade him, if they can get good value.

by LT on Sep 16, 2007 7:46 PM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Deserves? Needs? Should?
What does Murton really offer? Occassional power when the ball is up as he doesn't elevate it, (I am thankful for his HR yesterday and earlier this month), but his splits show he is a ground ball hitter. Thus he needs to be an average hitter, which this year he is not, he also is not a good RISP hitter. He looks for mistakes which if he had better speed of foot would be alright.

His defense is vanilla and in RF he is very slow to react, his arm is average so what you have is a popular average OF'er.

Trade value is high in that he has 4 years left as a non free agent and 2 left not being arbitration eligible. So if he is a 4th-5th OF'er who can't play CF regardless of  his fan support. Cubs can use him along with Marshall and Ohman to possibly garnish Hawpe who is blocking even a better RF'er for the Rockies in Stewart. Hawpe is a good RF'er with good RBI's and above average power and average. Rockies need pitching and would take Murton as a good 4th OF'er to back up Stewart who bats LH.

FAce it Guys
IF the team makes it into the Post season, they are not going to "match up" with any team they play.

The West teams' kicks our asses, the Phils OR Mets also have had "our number" this year.

Potent offenses for the East and excellent pitching for the West teams.

But - ya still play the games!

okay so let us not play
that is what was said about the Cardinals...face it we shouldn't play any of the games.

If the West is so great why do the Cubs have the best record in the NL since June 1st, 55-41

Rich Hill...
...must keep the BBs down tomorrow.  Our pitchers probably look at Wrigley as a negative v. most places on the road, whereas Cincy staff probably loves to get the heck out of the Great American Pitcher Killer Ball Park.  The matchup favors the reds but not a strong favor (tomorrow's game).  Hill has the ability to absolutely dominate--we need it tomorrow.

Head-to-Head
the Cubs, pre or post June 1 have a below .500 record against Dodgers, Padres, D-Backs, Phillies, and Mets.

These are the teams they would likely face if they meet any of them.

The other teams, comprised of NL Central, White Sox, etc., will not factor into the Playoffs.

We got beat by the #1 team in the country
I'm not sure much else can be said.  It wasn't bad enough to drop Nebraska 8-10 spots in the polls as was done, however... apparantly Texas A&M having to use 3OT's to beat Fresno State is more impressive.

Oh well, polls mean nothing this early.  USC was easily the toughest opponent Nebraska will face this season, and every game here on out is winnable.  Arkansas won 10 straight after getting blown out by USC last year...

Well - 42-10 after 3 quarters
and then USC brought in the Freshman team.

And you think the Texas game is "winnable"?

I'm tired of hearing about USC's backups
Since all I've heard for the past 5 years is how much depth they have.  You can't have both arguments.

Texas has struggled against Arkansas State, TCU, and almost crapped up Central Florida.  I definitely think it's winnable.

But it is evident that Pete
Carroll has layers of bench talent that would start on Nebraska.

OR Texas, Oklahoma, etc.

Just the way it is right now with them nearly winning at the clip that they have been. Calahan going head-to-head against Pete Caroll is just gonna lose in recruiting and on the field.

It is SEPTEMBER, and we're STILL IN IT! YES!

by TheEman on Sep 16, 2007 6:57 PM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Exactly.
USC has depths and depths of talent.  Their freshman would be starters on most Big 12 teams.  So there is no need to discount any TD's scored on any layer of that team.

Let the final score stand by itself, which is already bad enough.

There is no place like Nebraska - Go Huskers!

by sanantonecub on Sep 16, 2007 7:05 PM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I just looked at the Rankings
and it is no "cakewalk" for your Huskers in the Big 12.

So - I guess any game is "winnable" where football is much more dependent on home Mo than baseball.

But your team has to play OK, Texas, and Texas A&M, the first two are top-10. A&M has a nice team also.

In ADDITION, Nebraska will have to play the Red Raiders who ring up the scoreboard like a pinball machine.

B/C the whole "Bowl Game" deal is so watered down these days, Nebraska could go 7-4 and still play between Christmas and New Years.

It is SEPTEMBER, and we're STILL IN IT! YES!

by TheEman on Sep 16, 2007 7:12 PM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Did you look at our schedule?
Nebraska does not play Oklahoma or Texas Tech this year.

In addition to the 5 North Opponents, all of which Nebraska has the capability to win (though the two road games at Kansas and Mizzou will present challenges), Nebraska gets A&M and Oklahoma State at home, and Texas on the road.  All three of those schools have shown their vulnerability this year, and Nebraska has equal talent to them.

There is no place like Nebraska - Go Huskers!

by sanantonecub on Sep 16, 2007 7:20 PM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Schedule -
Nope - I assumed that they play the aforementioned but with the new - HUGE, "Big 12" it is a break this year.

You are right on that indeed the Cornhuskers will have a nice opportunity to play in a better Bowl Game.

BCS, I doubt.

Decent Bowl game - sure!

Brewers pitching matches
Brewers have a very very favorable next for games.  The lowest ERA out of the next 4 starting pitchers is 5.79.  That's the LOWEST.

Cubs need to step it up even more than before or hope that The Brewers choke which is very very possible.

Saw the post mentioning Reds pitchers
I'm a little nervous also at the site of Arroyo and Harang twice each in the last 12. I'm more concerned with the Cubs against Harang that Arroyo.

However, if Harang puts up this line score again, I feel a little better; given the Cubs power has made a nice turnaround the past 2+ weeks.

You're so right...
I've been one of the people piling on Dempster, but I think that's mostly the frayed nerves I have from the last couple of weeks.

I only wish he would have more saves/appearances like the last two days, with very little drama.

The bullpen in its current configuration got them this far, let it roll.

If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

Tough series coming up against the Reds - they need 2 of 3 to keep their lead, I think.

It was the Alex Gonzalez error that killed us!

by Hugest Canadian Cubs Fan on Sep 17, 2007 9:07 AM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I think Dempster needs to be used...
....only when we have a 1 or 2 run lead.  When it's 3-4, use Ohman or Wuertz or Wood - someone who's got something to prove, not a closer who thinks this is an easier outing.

I'd be interested in seeing his splits for how many runs we're ahead when he comes in - I'd imagine that when he comes in 1 or 2 runs ahead, his ERA is remarkably lower, and when it's 3+ he relaxes and his ERA balloons and we've got problems like we did against St.L. on Friday.  Put in someone else with those 3+ run cushions and only use Dempster for the stuff he really has to bear down for.

From another thread on another site
I also go on www.cbs.sportsline.com and the Cubs' message boards there. A Twin fan came on and asked what we'd give in a hypothetical trade for Johann Santana. He actually had a pretty decent trade proposal. However, some people on there were so willing to give up Soto (along with Pie, Murton to name a few others) in the trade. I personally cannot see the Cubs giving up Soto. He's proved to be too valuable and especially with our catching carousel this year! Blanco is getting older and I'm not too sure he'll be playing next year (with his back and all). Kendall has stated he wants to be back and I think he should be. I think it should be Kendall/Soto next year.

I'd love for the Cubs to go after both Hunter and Santana in the offseason. We can move Jones to RF, Hunter in CF, Sori in LF. Imagine a pitching staff with Zambi, Lilly, Santana, Marquis, and a #5 starter (Hill?).

I think Cubs are going with Pie
He is starting to learn to hit by driving the ball working with Lou and the staff. Soto might end up starting 4 of 12 games down the stretch and even start a game or two in the playoffs if Kendall can't hold off the runners.

Soto and Pie will be the centerposts on this team for some time. I can see the Cubs pursuing Santana but I don't think they got or willing to part with the horses. You would have to trade Hill, Marmol or Smarz, Pie...as for Hunter he could be a heckeva RF'er but then jones would not be here.

by Ivy Walls on Sep 17, 2007 8:59 AM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I agree with you about Soto.
He's next year's regular catcher.

The jury is still out about Pie. He has to learn how to hit at the major leagues level. (And he couldn't even hit lefties in AAA.) However, he is so good on defense and has so much speed that if he hits for average he will be the CF the Cubs have been looking for. But Pie has to end the Corey Patterson imitation and stop hitting fly balls and striking out. The good thing is that Pie is very young, so he can still improve.

by Fraggin Judge on Sep 17, 2007 9:45 AM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Marmol??
I seriously, seriously doubt that the Cubs would give up Marmol either. He's got flithy, nasty stuff and it wouldn't surprise me to see him as the Cubs closer soon. I like Dempster and I think he's done a good job as our closer. I think that Marmol's stuff is better than Dempster's. I wouldn't mind if they traded Pie for him (among a few other players, of course). Hunter's as good as gone, so why not try and get Pie in return for Santana? They may try and bring up someone from their farm system or go after Andruw Jones (which I also doubt because if they won't fork over the money for Hunter, why would they for Jones?). I like Pie's defense, but he really can't hit for a lick at this level. Maybe more time in the bigs will help him improve that. Question remains, how much time can we give him before it hurts us?

Dempster & Rivera
are in different classes, but I see your point.

What amazes me about Rivera is how long he has been so effective and basically with one pitch (cut fastball).  Everybody has known what he was going to throw for many years now, and he still has been dominating.  Dempster has more pitches in his arsenal but his command is so much more fleeting compared to Rivera.

Dempster has the stuff to be very effective more times than not, but it's his lack of concentration that gets him in trouble.

re: Other closers...
And let's not forget the Okajima/Papelbon/Gagne implosion in the eighth inning of Friday night's Yankees-Red Sox game.

Craving more baseball, I flipped over to ESPN after the Cubs game and expected to watch the BoSox complete their smackdown of the surging Yankees, only to see Boston's bullpen melt down like a Russian nuclear reactor.

I actually draw a certain amount of solace from the fact that, even though the Cubs' bullpen has struggled to close games down cleanly as of late, they've still been able to get the job done.

All in all, it was a great weekend to be a Cubs fan.

Carlos Marmol, you complete me.
