Open Thread: Cubs vs. Reds, Monday 9/17, 7:05 CT

Players don't think this way, but we do. What am I talking about? Bear with me... it was just about three years ago that the Cubs came back from a disastrous trip to New York to play the final week at home, still leading the wild card race by one game with six to go after beating the under-.500 Reds decisively in the first of a four-game series.

Then the Reds took three straight in soul-crushing fashion, the last two in 12 innings, the last one on a double by Javier Valentin off Kyle Farnsworth after Mark Prior had pitched the game of his life (striking out sixteen in nine innings), virtually eliminating the Cubs from a race we all thought was won.

What I mean by "players not thinking this way" is this: from those 2004 teams, only ten players remain on today's active rosters (six Cubs: Derrek Lee, Aramis Ramirez, Carlos Zambrano, Ryan Dempster, Kerry Wood and Michael Wuertz, and four Reds: Adam Dunn, Ken Griffey Jr., Aaron Harang, and that darned Valentin -- eerily, two 2004 Reds have died since, Cory Lidle and Josh Hancock). The rest of the current Cubs and Reds weren't here, know nothing of that devastating series, and look only toward the three games to come this week.

But WE remember. We owe 'em one. Let's go Cubs.

vs. Cin -- vs. Cubs
One year ago yesterday, Rich Hill threw the best game of his young career to that date -- a two-hit shutout of the Reds at Wrigley Field, the only CG shutout they had last year. He's been very good vs. Cincinnati this year, too -- 1-0, 1.50 in two starts, the win coming back on April 14 at Wrigley Field, when he allowed them three hits and no runs in a 7-0 Cubs win. He's handled almost everyone on the Reds well -- Edwin Encarnacion has hit two HR off Hill, but those are the only two hits he has (2-for-11).

Bronson Arroyo had a really good first year in the NL after spending several years as an AL East pitcher, including going 4-0 vs. the Cubs and homering twice off Glendon Rusch in 2006. 2007 hasn't been nearly as kind to Arroyo; the Cubs have beaten him twice, including the above-mentioned April 14 game that Hill won. It might not be a bad day to give Jacque Jones (4-for-28 vs. Arroyo) and/or Alfonso Soriano (4-for-27 vs. Arroyo) the day off, if Lou feels they need one.

Oh, incidentally, Bronson? Nice hair flip.

Way to go, Al
I was feeling pretty mellow, having watched the boys thrash the Cardinals up and down Wrigley Field South (which is how I refer to Crappy Light Beer Stadium to Cards fans)

Now you got me all worked up about the Reds with your trip through the recent past.

So, when you feel the urge to ban me later tonight, please remember, in the words of Jack Nicholson's Joker.

Thanks.

Yeah! He isn't giving his body for the team enough
Didn't this guy just deliver a backbreaking 2-run HR to basically end the season for the defending WS Champion Cardinals in their own backyard?

Soriano has played through a quad tear, wrist injuries, and hamstring problems, and he continues to play the game like his hair is on fire. But you're right, he should be "hustling" for the fans more, like Erstad or Eckstein.

He's going to hack at bad balls. That's just who he is. But he's also going to get super-hot on occasion (and the last few days indicate that Right Now may be one of those occasions), and even with his trips to the DL, he's going to finish this season with 30-ish HR and ~100 runs scored.

The last thing that this team needs right now is negativity from the home fans, especially regarding something as nebulous and unquantifiable as "hustle".

by ClosingTime on Sep 17, 2007 5:03 PM CDT up reply actions

Don't you know...
That if you aren't running to first base on a walk like that twit Mickey Hatcher did, or like that little twerp Eckstein does, you aren't hustling.

Soriano is the least of our worries right now.

From Paul Sullivan's
Latest blog on Chicagosports.com
http://blogs.chicagosports.chicagotribune.com/sports_hardball/2007/09/spotlights-on-t.html

Paul says:

"While rumors about the arrival of prospective owner Mark Cuban circulated around the ballpark on Monday, the Cubs prepared to start the home stretch of the season with a one-game lead in the National League Central."

Does anyone know exactly what Paul is referring to in regards to Mark Cuban?  If i'm just missing it, I claim a case of the Monday's.

hey lemonpie haven't seen you since Dempster
saved the first game on Saturday and then did the same on Sunday. Now you come in and find a left handed way to stir more controversy with Soto.

Yes Kendall is 1 for 9 against Arroyo but Kendall is the veteran and it appears Piniella is playing his regular eight. I am beginning to think you have other agendas than merely being an attentive fan.

Not that you can't have a critical eye but there is a fine line between critical and cynicism and baiting. As far as Cuban the Tribune is a public company and there is a bidding process but in that there are ways to determine how big a bid will be. Cuban told a few people that if he did bid he would not be outbid. He could be the next Steinbrenner or Epstein where money is merely a means to acquire talent. Cubs should be in the top 5 of talent on the field.

Dempster has looked good last 2 SO
I hope he keeps it up, but knowing how inconsistent he can be, I am guessing he won't and now the next game he blows, will be magnified by 10 and I will be sticking my head through the curtains when he does.

As far as "stirring" it up with the Soto comment. No, just my opinion that his bat is hot and against a better hitting team as Reds, it would've been wiser to put the hot bat in the lineup. IMO anyways.

Thanks for the update on Cuban.

by lemon20pie on Sep 17, 2007 6:33 PM CDT up reply actions

I don't get how you find Dempster inconsistent?
Of closers with 25 saves or more, only Saito, Putz, Papelbon, and Gregg have a higher save percentage.

So, please, how is that inconsistent?

Dempster, by all accounts, is nothing but a stand-up guy, great in the clubhouse, great for the community and he does his job very well.

Yet people for some reason continue to bash this guy for absolutely no reason.  It's not like he's Albert Belle or something.

Kendall's D is sketchy
...but the Cubs have been playing well with him in the lineup. It might have something to do with going with a veteran catcher for a relatively young starter.

Hopefully Soto is the first pinch hitter off the bench facing a LHP.

I like the "we owe 'em one"
comment from Al.  In addition to paying the Reds back, we can pay back the Marlins for '03 soon.  Then perhaps pay back the Padres (1984) and the Mets (1969) in the >hush tones< post season.

by Neifi Puppy on Sep 17, 2007 6:11 PM CDT reply actions

I was at the game that Prior pitched.
It was my first trip to Wrigley in over 10 years.  I was keeping score and around the seventh realized how many K's, many backward, I had written down.  I commented to my wife something like, "Wow!"  Real astute, I know.  From my seat in the upper deck first base side that day I could still see how much movement Prior had.  With each strikeout looking the Reds players would just put their heads down and trudge back to the dugout.  No argument just beaten.  Prior made one mistake and Dunn crushed it.

Then in the ninth Prior got in a bit of trouble.  He induced a hot grounder with two out that looked like a sure single to score the go ahead run.  Todd Walker made the play of his life and caught the ball and got the runner at first.

He, Walker, was due up first in the bottom of the inning.  I was thinking, "Perfect!  Guy makes a great play and now he is leading off.  Guaranteed hit."  Nope, not with Dustbag around.  Dusty played "Lefty/Righty" and pinch hit for Walker.  The pinch hitter, of course, made an out.

I left that day knowing the season was over.

by MiniAndretti on Sep 17, 2007 6:16 PM CDT reply actions

I must admit...
I'm a little worried going into this final stretch.  Cincy and Pittsburgh have both been playing pretty good ball recently, and we haven't played all that well against either team all year.  Plus, there's the Florida sweep from late May...but of course, that was before the big turnaround.

I'm doing my best to not revert to "we're doomed" mode, but I am a little concerned...it smacks a little of '04.  Just a little.

That said (self-pep talk!) we've been playing some solid ball recently, Fonzie's got his power stroke back, aand Hill's got a chance to be our fourth 10-game winner tonight.  So I'll try to do like you say, Al, even though it goes against my very nature.  I'll try and keep the faith.

Before each game, please remember to feed the bats.

He made it all the way up to AA this year and pitched for the Smokies in their playoff run. He's still pretty raw and needs to develop better control -- his strikeouts aren't as high as they need to be for a guy with his makeup/projection.

I refuse
to say that the brewers are better than any team, i know they are but for these two weeks I want them to be the worst team ever

by Les Lancaster on Sep 17, 2007 8:07 PM CDT reply actions

It's no great complement
to call a team better than the Astros.

you would think
the theory about a team not in contention playing better ball because the pressure is off would apply here, but it's not lookin that way.

by thehawk on Sep 17, 2007 8:15 PM CDT reply actions

Value of the squeeze
Not only does the runner go to 2nd, but you don't have your pitcher standing out there.  He can rest on the bench instead.  Can pitchers still wear jackets on the basepaths?  I remember seeing that all the time when I was younger but I can't remember the last time I've seen it lately.

by IllinoisCubs on Sep 17, 2007 8:16 PM CDT reply actions

That shows
how Lou feels about Hill's bunting skills. Normally there's no way he's swinging away in that situation.

by Les Lancaster on Sep 17, 2007 8:16 PM CDT reply actions

If that is Cedeno or Fontenot
that would be a different call at second.  Phillips got that call on reputation.  That is BS.  Make the right call. Period.
Prince Fielder...he is neither.
