Open Thread: Cubs vs. Astros, Sunday 9/2, 1:20 CT

A few notes... Alec Drews, the 21-year-old man who was seriously injured when the car wash next to Wrigley Field collapsed during last week's storm, died late last night:

"It's been a pretty tough week," Michael Drews [his brother] said. "He never looked that good in the hospital. The week . . . he was in the hospital trying to fight, we were all preparing ourselves for the worst. The doctors have been really nice. We've talked to the Cubs organization a couple of times and they've been really nice. [Chicago Cubs President] John McDonough has stopped by a couple of times to see my brother and my parents."
My condolences to Alec Drews' family.

Some of you were concerned about Ron Santo; I got a couple of emails asking me if I knew why he left the broadcast booth during the game. Here's what happened:

Cubs broadcaster Ron Santo has a crack in the socket of his left prosthesis and was forced to leave Saturday's game in the sixth inning.

Santo, who has two artificial legs, said he doesn't feel any pain. But he said the crack prevented him from having any movement in the leg.

Santo said he would return to his suburban home and be fitted for a new prosthesis. He said he hopes to be able to return on Sunday to broadcast the finale of the Cubs-Astros series for WGN-AM 720.

A note for the upcoming series vs. the Dodgers: David Wells, whose career appeared to be over when the Padres let him go, is going to wind up serving a seven-game suspension he got for a vehement argument he had with umpire Ed Hickox on July 7. He was supposed to start Wednesday's game. Instead, another young lefthander the Cubs have never seen -- Eric Stults -- will make that start.

So much for Rocky Cherry -- in last night's Red Sox-Orioles game, a bit better-known for Clay Buchholz' no-hitter, Cherry made his Orioles debut. He threw 27 pitches, 15 for strikes. In facing five hitters, he walked one, gave up three hits and allowed four runs (capped by a Kevin Youkilis HR), for an AL ERA of 108.00.

 Today's Starting Pitchers

vs. Woody Williams
 W. Williams
Astros
8-7 W-L 8-13
3.68 ERA 5.04
154 SO 92

24 HR 29
vs. Hou -- vs. Cubs
In Rich Hill's last three starts, he is 2-0 with a 2.57 ERA and three (!) walks and 26 strikeouts in 21 IP. Keep up the good work. In his only appearance vs. Houston this year, he allowed three hits and one run in seven innings in a 2-1 loss in Houston on August 6. His 154 K's rank sixth in the NL; with three today he'll pass Cole Hamels, who is out for a while, and possibly John Smoltz, who is one ahead of him and who also starts today.

Just as Lance Berkman hits Jason Marquis hard (and Marquis did a good job of holding him down yesterday), Jason Kendall seems to have Woody Williams' number (18-for-37, 2 doubles, a HR, .486/.537/.622). Also look for Cliff Floyd to have a good day today (11-for-29, a double, 2 HR, .379/.419/.621 vs Williams). But perhaps the Cub to watch most closely today is Aramis Ramirez, who also hits Williams (13-for-43, .302/.333/.488) and who is 7 for his last 10. Lifetime Williams is 4-9, 4.26 in 19 games (18 starts) vs. the Cubs, but a bit better this year, 1-1, 2.37, including this win last month in Houston.

Do the Cubs still offer bicycle
parking since the car wash is down?  I usually come in over by the el on Addison so I haven't seen what the car wash area looks like since the storm.  Nice day today.  Thought I'd ride.

Yes.
The bike service is in the same location, just outdoors.

Lou Story
Nice article about Lou in today's St. Petersburg Times --

CHICAGO -- He says a lot of the same things, talking about swagger and winning "baseball games" and how his team needs more offense, stammering and pausing and offering a few of those looks, sharing his thoughts without worrying about whose feelings may be hurt. And he says he does a lot of the same things, managing the Cubs as he managed the Devil Rays, and the Mariners and Reds and Yankees before that, which is to say that every game is the most vital to win, and he'll do whatever's necessary to make it happen. But it's obvious Lou Piniella is in a better place. And it's not only because he has the Cubs in first place.

Piniella looks healthier, the hollowness in his eyes replaced by the once-familiar fire, and noticeably happier, reveling in the big-city spotlight and big-game environment.

"It's been fun, it really has. I've enjoyed it," Piniella said, sitting in the Cubs dugout in his No. 41 jersey. "This is a better situation. At this time of my life, this is the situation for me."

As when hired by the Rays, Piniella, now 64, was put in charge of a salvage project, taking over a Cubs team that lost 96 games last season and eager to make him the face of a new direction.

But that's where the similarities diminish, as the Cubs followed his signing by committing $300-million to free agents and, at Piniella's urging, continuing to improve a team with a $100-million payroll.

Managing again after a year in the booth, Lou Piniella has a front office committed to spending money to improve. He also has his old fire back. "This is a better situation. At this time of my life, this is the situation for me."

The result can be seen in the standings, as the Cubs (at 69-65 in an admittedly mediocre division) lead the NL Central by two games with 28 to play. And the payoff could be spectacular come October should Piniella lead the once-lovable losers to their first World Series win since 1908. The Rays finished fourth once, last twice and averaged 67 wins in his three seasons.

Is the difference better players, or is Piniella a better manager?

"Better manager?" he says slowly, with his typical chuckle. "I thought I did a pretty good job in Tampa Bay. I really did. It was a tough division and the competition was very tough. I did the best I could.

"Look, I didn't manage any different in Tampa Bay than when I managed anywhere else. ... If given the opportunity I'd have won there. I enjoyed the kids that we had there, our teams played hard and we got after it. We were just short in areas."
Lou Pinella didn't have much to smile about in Tampa Bay. The Rays finished fourth once, last twice and averaged 67 wins in his three seasons. He said he appreciated the opportunity to work at home, enjoyed everything but the losing and learned things about handling young players that help him now.

"I don't know that he can be judged on what happened in Tampa," said Larry Rothschild, offering the perspective of the Rays' first manager, the Cubs' pitching coach and an offseason Tampa resident. "I think baseball people knew and felt like he did a tremendous job there, really. Look at the way the team was evolving when he left. They had taken some nice strides. He probably left prematurely. Who knows what would have happened if he stayed."

Piniella split after the 2005 season, with a year remaining on his contract, in somewhat mutual agreement with Stuart Sternberg's incoming ownership group. He said he appreciated the opportunity to work at home, enjoyed everything but the losing and learned things about handling young players that help him now.

He spent last season doing TV work, waiting for what he insists is his last managing job, signing a three-year deal for a chance to win again before he retires home to Tampa.

And from all accounts - won-over players, adoring fans, front office suits and even the irascible Chicago media, which initially portrayed him as a doddering codger and made fun of his misstatements, such as a sacrilegious reference to the White Sox winning on the "north side" and calling the curse-causing goat a horse - he has done a heck of a job, especially after a rough start - a rock-bottom 22-31 on June 2.

"He's been everything I hoped for," Dunedin-born GM Jim Hendry said. "We got off to that tough start, things were kind of going bad, and that's when you find out whether you've got the right guy or not. I give Lou a lot of credit. When things have to be righted in the middle of a season it's not the general manager, it's the guy on the top step of the dugout. He did a terrific job. We became a whole different ballclub over a short period of time."

Piniella did what he does best: manage.

Tweaking, tinkering, shuffling and forever searching for something better, he made changes at every position but first and third, plus the rotation and bullpen. He moved Alfonso Soriano from centerfield to left (and he immediately got hot), installed Ryan Theriot at shortstop, gave pesky infielder Mike Fontenot and hard-throwing reliever Carlos Marmol more opportunities. The team traded away two opening day starters, catcher Michael Barrett and shortstop Cesar Izturis, and acquired an All-Star, catcher Jason Kendall.

He has made a series of successful moves in the dugout, employing an aggressive offense to offset an unexpected lack of power and key injuries, and some unconventional pitching decisions. But it's the day he went onto the field that stands out as the moment he may have literally kick-started the team's turnaround.

It's June 2, the day after a caught-on-camera dugout fistfight between ace Carlos Zambrano and Barrett, and the Cubs had just fallen behind the Braves on the way to what would be their sixth straight loss, and 31st in 53 games.

Piniella had, finally, seen enough. He raced from the dugout and, with the Wrigley Field faithful finally having something to cheer for, launched a face-reddening, venom-spewing, hat-kicking tirade at umpire Mark Wegner reminiscent of, well, the old Lou Piniella.

Cubs players still discuss whether it was a calculated move ("If he did that, he's a genius," reliever Scott Eyre said) to take the focus off the dugout dustup and the distractions it could cause, or simply the result of utter frustration. ("I think he was letting us know he wasn't going to sit on the bench and watch us play like that anymore," infielder Mark DeRosa said.)

But there is no debate the Cubs became a tighter, more intense and better team since, having gone 47-34.

"He got kicked out of that game and we realized that he's going to fight for us and we started to get that energy," Soriano said.

There has been noticeably more liveliness in the clubhouse since, more resolve and more of that "Cubbies swagger" Piniella asked for. "Players kind of chuckled about it when it was in the paper, but all he meant by that was walk around like you guys are good," Eyre said. "The way he spoke about the team and winning and everything else, you wanted to do better for him and make his words come true."

Piniella downplays his contributions, saying, "We turned it around when we started playing better."

But with Piniella in charge, it's little surprise they managed to do that.

What karma to be there at this precise time.

Perhaps this could have happened another time as well?

They're all big games
but this one has a litle more importance to me. We need to continue to win series. We seem to have a good matchup with Hill and Williams. The cards face Arroyo with Looper which should be a good matchup and the Brewers Suppan faces the Pirates best in Gorzelanny. It's a good day to win and the chasers lose. We need to keep pushing.

Insomnia induced archive game....DEFENSE
I thought it was quite ironic that the Comcast broadcast yesterday provided a cell phone survey where 69% of the responses stated that offense was the most important element for the Cubs to win, while other choices provided starting pitching, relief pitching or defense.

Yesterday's game I noticed a litany of strong defensive plays that separated the Cubs from the Astros:
A) Ramirez stab of a shot down the line into a double play.
B) Lee's pickup of Theriot's low throw for a 3rd out.
C) Soriano's catch in foul territory late in the game, near the wall.
D) Theriot's play in the hole for the final out.
E) Jones running catch in the 9th on Berkman's leadoff liner.
F) DeRosa's high leaping catch on Loretta's soft liner for the 2nd out of the inning. (ironically all three outs in the 9th were on good to excellent defensive plays.)

In contrast Cubs scored their first run on a miscue of a fundamental defensive play where the relay throw got past two infielders. Earlier in the game Berkman failed to make the same pickup of a poor throw that Lee made. Also in the 8th inning the Astros 2nd baseman failed to make the play on Ward's hit. Also earlier in the game Wittingham failed to make an easy play to force out Kendall at 2nd base when Marquis sacrificed.

Defense is as integral as pitching, it takes away opportunities and reduces the outs as much as it saves or prevents runs. Whether the Cubs suddenly get hot hitting homeruns or not, defense and pitching is critical.

Today Hill starts, tough luck pitcher with more K's than any other Cub pitcher, the best ERA but more importantly a pitcher who needs a good defense in the OF.

Anyway Cubs are 5-6 against the Astros whom they have one more series with in Houston. Cubs are 30-28 against the Central (although much of their losses took place in April and May when they recorded 31 of their season losses. Also Cubs have a recent run rate of 7 straight victories against rookie starters so the LAD starting another rookie is actually GOOD!

When will Lou blow up again ?
Things are going nicely, but I feel we are still on the edge; it's exciting and I wouldn't have it any other way.  Lou's tirade really fired things up the team in June.  Could another one be far behind ?

My thoughts are with the Drews family.  Sounds like he was a really nice kid.

I really believe
Rich Hill is the one who deserves the 14-something wins that Zambrano has. He has pitched like a #2 the whole year .. has played like a vet. Zambrano is the one who is pitching like a 2-year rookie .. he's been extremely streaky.

Don't Agree, Pie...
MEntally, it is MUCH different to be a set-up man, then getting 3 outs in the bottom of the 9th in a Division race.

Most of the closer "superstars" apprenticed as set-up guys. It is VERY appropriate what Lou is doing.

Rivera, Francisco, Putz, Hoffman, Wagner, et. al.

He WILL be the closer next year.

plus...
If Marmol can smoke them for two innings, why waste that for one ?

by coral on Sep 2, 2007 11:29 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Marmol is already the closer
He just closes the game down in the 6th, 7th or sometimes even the 8th inning.  He leads the league in percentage of inherited runners scored.  It's not even close.  He's the only guy to have less than 10 percent of inherited runners score.  Michael Wuertz is second.  When Marmol comes in with runners on second and third and gets a strikeout or two, the game is over.

When was the last time Dempster actually blew a save?  How many times does this happen a year?  It may not be pretty, but Dempster doesn't blow saves.  Perhaps you would rather have Dempster come in during the 7th with runners on second and third and one out?  I didn't think so.  It's so painfully obvious that what we have works, only someone who blindly listens to the media created idea of what closer is wouldn't recognize it.

by IllinoisCubs on Sep 2, 2007 11:36 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Ask yourself a few questions
  1. Would you rather have had Marmol and Dempster switch roles this past year? Would we have had a better record?
  2. Is a game over or closed at the end of 7?
Granted, Marmol is the MVP of the bullpen, if not the entire staff, but he's not the closer.
It's not too late to go to Soto

i agree with keeping marmol where he is
what I think we should do is put howry in the closers role right now because he has been extremely solid lately coming into the games and just shutting down the opposition, keep marmol where he's at his best right now, just switch dempster and howry

For now
I like Marmol right where he is at. He has "saved" a lot of games for us so far by shutting down the other team cold in the 6th and 7th innings. Yes, Dempter gives me ulcers too, but he has generally gotten the job done. I think those two Mets games have really made his season seem worse than it has been. Besides, how many truly lights out, shut down closers are there in baseball? Not many. Marmol might be one next year, but I think we need to leave things in the pen as they are for right now.

Dero the QB
There was a rumor floating around Atlanta in the late 90s (I was living there) that the Cleveland Browns were trying to sign DeRo as a backup QB when he was playing for AAA Richmond, and that DeRo gave it some serious consideration before deciding to stay with baseball.  His major reason for deciding against it was that he was too small for the NFL.  (He's put on about 15 pounds since then.)  The Browns supposedly loved his ability to throw both short and deep, and to read defenses.

That sounds like the anti-Rex, doesn't it?

a few games to prove he can get through a game without a fumbled snap, and if he can't, DeRo should be available by November.

Uncle Cliffy
According to Cot's Baseball Contracts (http://mlbcontracts.blogspot.com/2005/01/chicago-cubs_112114177768677294.html), Cliff's option for 2008 is not guaranteed unless he has 100 games started or 425 PAs.  By my (rough) calculations, Cliff won't start more than 92 games or get more than 390 PAs this season.  His 2008 option could be worth as much as $10 million if the Cubs choose to pick it up.  Is he worth it?

Rich is settling down
BTW, as much hell as Rothschild caught last year, I have to say he's done a good job this year. Marquis has been much better than I expected, Hill's been pretty good, Marshall is developing and we all know about Marmol.

There's still the Zambrano issue, but otherwise, I'd say every pitcher on the staff has performed as well as any of us could have hoped -- if not better.

Pitching
I agree.  The pitching has held up remarkably well this year.  You could have made a lot of money if you would have bet at the beginning of the year that the Cubs would be in the playoff hunt because of their (non-Prior, non-Wood) pitching, not their offense.

Of course they're "trying"
but what exactly does that say about a team that has 4 hits through 5 innings against Woody Williams of all pitchers in September of a pennant race AT HOME.

I'd hate to see the Cubs drop this one to Houston, but if it happens its 5 losses out of the last 6 against an Astros team that can't beat any one else - only us!

To me, the team clearly seemed to be ready to face Milwaukee last week, they haven't looked that way against the Astros this weekend.

I agree
they are certainly trying.

Just pressing BIG-time!

I would think that with the veteran leadership, they'd be able to fight through this, but it is truly the "tight collar", imo, which I stated previously.

Their record against .500 teams is not that much better. But we have a LOSING record against divisional teams under .500 - which BOTH Cards and Brew do not.

They are able to beat these teams handily.

More clutch hitting
This team just takes so much effort just to score just one run, much less four. One hit, two walks = squat!

Problem is, the pitchers are probably getting to the point where they feel that they need to pitch a perfect game or they will lose.  They start pressing, and the trouble just keeps getting worse.

What gets me is that not only are they not hitting any home runs to speak of, they are not even coming close to hitting home runs.

He's been calling that pitch all day
If it's close, you have to swing at that, and Ramirez knew it.

Stupid not to swing; even more stupid to get thrown out.

At least they got two runs and got back into it. Three innings to get two more.

by Not Bruce Froemming on Sep 2, 2007 3:40 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yes
He has been calling it all day.  But it still not what is a defined strike.

Maybe MLB ought to spend more time looking at the quality of umpiring rather than if Terry Francona is wearing the proper attire in the dugout in the middle of a game.

Umpires
I am so sick and tired of these umpires and their interpretation of the strike zone.  None of the called strikes on Ramirez was over the plate.

These damn umpires have to realize that people are not paying their hard earned money to see them.

Ramirez HAD To Swing At That Picth
The ump's been calling that all day, and Ramirez needs to protect the plate. It was a lot like the last few he had fouled off. To take that pitch was to ask for a called strike.

Torn on this idea
for ball-strikes.

More so, I'd be in favor of a rigerous standard, and the elimination of obesity - these guys should be in-shape too.

No offense to anyone here, but if they have problems with running to get a better look, or getting into position properly to make a game-changing play, they just should not do it.

A review on their strike zones by superiors, and also, a real template standard instead of "personal interpretation".

I like technology in limited capacity for HR's, perhaps fair/foul. Why not?

While I think it would solve a lot of problems,

Huge props to Kendall
JK deserves huge props for blocking those balls in the dirt, especially the last one. Giving your staff confidence that they can throw the ball in the dirt is huge.

17 of last 25 one run wins!
WOW!

Who would've guessed that in April.

Very nice win today.

It's different
I know exactly what you mean, but for the first time in a long time I felt this game was different. There was a confidence that we haven't seen in a long time, even down 5-1.

Bullpen
I know that D-Lee got the big hit, but this win goes to the bullpen.  What a great job they did shutting down the 'Stros and giving the bats a chance to wake up from their coma.

That W flag really looks nice!

So
Was that the game of the year thus far? Or the A-Ram homer one?

I certainly hope his helmet slamming didn't merit a one game suspension or something.

Great game!
My voice is hoarse from yelling and celebrating after Derek's home run and Dempster shutting Berkhole out.

What was Santo saying? I was watching the game on WGN.

Do you understand the words that are coming out of my mouth?

by Keith on Sep 2, 2007 4:39 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

WOOOHOOO!!!
Didn't get to see much of the game just little bits here and there. Did get to see Demps come in and shut them down. Read farther up about Murton, what did he do? Wish I could have seen whatever he did.

Great win and a winning record for the month of Sept. ;)

I'm confused.....wait maybe I'm not.

"Poop" is only to be used as a result of a bad play or a f-up.

NOT b/c you missed a HR.

Game
Followed game through ESPN gametrack while doing fantasy football.  Glad to "see" the Cubs pull it out.  Forced to watch the Cardinals while drafting.  Good thing for drinks.

We had 'em all the way
Maybe the debate about DLee will calm down a bit now.

Another hellacious, come-from-behind win. Of course, Lee deserves the credit for the final score. But the bullpen was stellar today. Wuertz and Wood, in particular, went above and beyond, and Eyre did what he was asked to do -- get out a left-handed bat.

And a tip of the cap to Murton, who is picking good spots to homer.

Teams that have special seasons have victories like these. The Cubs have had a boatfull of them already.

Buckle up, folks. It's going to be a wild, fun ride in September.

Now that's more like it!!!!!!!!!!!

Let's keep that up and then I will believe.

I don't even remember April and May...
anymore....they are completely erased from my mind....hell I even get excited when Scottie Eyre comes in the game now....that is the kind of win you get when you are headed for post season....imagine how sh***y it makes the Brew and Card fans feel to see that score crawl across the screen!

You don't want me at Cubs games
The last game I went to Dempster and Eyre blew a 5-1 ninth inning lead.......

Wow, that seems like a long time ago.

by CubFaninNY on Sep 2, 2007 5:24 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

That's because it was
Three-plus months ... and a long time ago in other ways.

I was at the second game of the year, 35 degrees in Cincinnati ... that seems even longer.

April Game
I went to the Cubs/Brewers game Easter weekend.... and I got admit I didnt think sitting at that game boy this could be the year. Now if it is, I'll have a memory of seeing that team this year!!!!

Cecil Cooper's quote after the game
"I know they feel good about themselves over there but today was a tough one to swallow," Astros interim manager Cecil Cooper said. "We gifted them one in the third inning. It's the second day in a row that we've kind of given them a run and we need to tighten up our defense. I'm a little disappointed in that. I know it's not the best place to play defense, I know that. so we'll straighten that out."

Interesting.
