Open Thread: Cubs vs. Pirates, Friday 9/21, 1:20 CT

The Cubs, as you know, picked up a half game in the standings last night while resting at home when the Braves beat the Brewers 3-1. Now, Milwaukee must face Tim Hudson and John Smoltz today and tomorrow, while the Cubs are playing a team that they should be beating, but haven't so far this year (5-7 vs. Pittsburgh).

The time for talk is over. Just win.

 Today's Starting Pitchers
Jason Marquis
 J. Marquis
Cubs
vs. Paul Maholm
 P. Maholm
Pirates
12-8 W-L 10-15
4.07 ERA 4.76
102 SO 102
71 BB 49
22 HR 20
vs. Pit -- vs. Cubs
Jason Marquis threw his best game of the year against the Pirates on May 9 at Wrigley Field -- a three-hit shutout. He's 8-3, 4.01 in 16 starts at home this season, and the Cubs are 8-2 in his starts (not his record, the club record in games he's started, including one road game I attended) since I acquired my Marquis jersey, which I'll be wearing again today.

None of the Pirates hits him particularly well except for Jason Bay, who is .382/.450/.912 (13-for-34, 4 doubles, a triple, 4 HR).

Paul Maholm got pounded by the Astros in his last start on September 16, allowing ten earned runs in 2.2 innings. Maybe we could have the Cubs dress up in Astros uniforms; they have never beaten Maholm. He's 4-0 lifetime vs. the Cubs, although with a 4.94 ERA. Aramis Ramirez (4-for-11, a HR) and Alfonso Soriano (3-for-8, a HR) are the only Cubs who have had any decent success against Maholm.

It's going to be summerlike today:

Today: Mostly sunny, with a high near 89. South southwest wind between 10 and 15 mph.
Finally, have a little fun with Lou!

Today's game is cable-only in the Pittsburgh and Chicago areas; it's also on the EI list, and at today's Mediacenter link.

MLB.com Gameday (2007 version)

MLB.com Gameday (2006 version)

MLB.com Gameday for the Brewers/Braves game (6:05 CT start, TV on ESPN - I'll put this link in today's recap later this afternoon as well)

Discuss amongst yourselves.

Can't wait until game time!
Walking by the ballpark on my way to work this morning there was already a large line waiting to get tickets. Very much a playoff atmosphere and this is at 7 in the morning!
Hopefully the Cubbies play well tonight and Marquis has good command as well.

Well... I'm on my way to Arizona for business for the next 7 days. I hope the Cubs are sitting nicely atop the division when I return!

Will chime in from the road, when I have the chance.

Good times
I hope we all have a good time no matter what. This is what being a cubs fan is all about. A hell of a lot better then the last 3 years.

I have the feel the Cubs have the momentum and good things will happen this weekend.

6-01-2007 the Cubs begin to rise. They will never look back.

rookie pitcher did a favor for us last night. This weekend is a key to the season. We take care of business and the good Braves pitchers take care of their business and we'll be in good shape!

Crappy pitchers
I was curious about how many bad pitchers the Brewers have been facing lately, so I looked it up. It's pretty bad (follow the link if you want your eyes to bleed). Luckily, the Cubs somehow gained 2 games over that stretch. Good job, crappy rookie pitchers!!!
It's nice to see random no-name pitchers help the Cubs after kicking the snot out of us the last 2-3 years. ;)

I'm not sure of its legality
(so I may or may not have used it), but SopCast streams MLB games for every game played. It can do the same for football and basketball(when it comes back) too.

Legality aside, I'm wondering whether any spyware/adware comes along with the software you must download to view the games.

Assuming you've used SopCast, have you had any problems?

Malware
I haven't noticed any.  I downloaded and installed it, but I only used it once.  I had a bad feeling about it (not the legality, although there was that, but more because I thought I might be compromising my computer).  I'm a developer, so I notice performance issues pretty quickly.  I also check running processes on my machine regularly and have not seen anything out of the ordinary.

Nothing's been wrong at my end.
However, you probably know a ton more about computers than I do and spot problems faster. But I've been using it for about a year and a half, and it works great. It does have ~5 minute delay between real time and stream, though

Granted, I have Norton and ad-aware, and run spybot checks every other week just to make sure.

Here's the schedule for all the games, and their respective channels that you can use if you have it. If it's not legal, then I wouldn't know anything about it though. My friend told me about it, whom I can't really remember

SopCast
I've also installed it and have not noticed any glaring problems from spyware, though it's difficult to tell where junk comes from nowadays.  I've only used it once for the Cubs (to watch the end of a game) as I primarily use it for the Bears since I don't live in Chicago and I can't afford NFL Gameday ticket.

It is a grey area:  if a normal person has to pay to receive the service, then getting it "free" on SopCast is like stealing.  I don't mind using Gameday for baseball games, but football has more action and players involved on each play.

I hope the NFL can shake off its alliance with DirecTV and make games available over the net.  It's going to be awhile before that happens.  MLB was never captive to a single satellite provider.

re: SopCast
Yeah, like so many questionable things online, it is a grey area.

I mean, I pay to receive Comcast cable, in part to be able watch many/most Cubs games. But I can't access my cable box here at work, so am I really stealing to watch the games via SopCast? Technically, I've paid to watch the game on TV and, presumably, MLB will receive some of that revenue from Comcast. So they're not losing revenue if I watch the game on SopCast.

I'm probably committing some glaring ethical mistake here, though...

Interesting point....
You did pay Comcast to watch the game so you should be able to watch the game.  From an ethical standpoint, you are right.  From a legal standpoint, Sopcast hasn't purchased the rights to broadcast the game.  In essance, you are not stealing from Comcast, Sopcast is stealing from Comcast.

How's that for some sophistry?

re: Interesting point....
Well, that makes me feel better. Let Comcast worry about it! :-)

Which inspires me to ask: Why doesn't Comcast offer its subscribers Internet access to certain channels/programs? (Uh, namely, baseball games!) I'm guessing a lot of us would take advantage of this service. And I'd even consider paying a reasonable extra amount on my cable bill to be able to access Cubs game via the Web.

Of course, they'd probably want to charge an arm and leg for such a service...

Sopcast
I've used it a million times to watch english football (come on you Arsenal!), but never for MLB. This afternoon, I think I'll try Sopcast to watch the game. It's gotta be better than Gamecast, though Gamecast is faster than the mlb internet radio feed.

It's not DirecTV
that's keeping Sunday Ticket off of cable (although I'm sure they're ecstatic about it) but rather Fox and CBS.  It's the same issue that we have with blackouts of Saturday afternoon Fox baseball games of the week--the two networks want you to be watching their local broadcasts on their local channels with their local advertisers.

The networks didn't say anything when Sunday Ticket started on BUD systems and when it migrated to DirecTV because both were really small at the time and it wasn't worth arguing over.  But now that DirecTV has become big, it's a major headache for them.  DirecTV gets grandfathered in, but all the networks have said that the rights payments that they're willing to shell out for the NFL would go down substantially if Sunday Ticket were available on cable systems.  (It's another reason why ST is so freakin' expensive.  They're trying to keep the number of subscribers down.)

So far from the NFL wanting to "shake off" it's partnership with DirecTV, it's the NFL that's keeping it going.  The NFL isn't "captive" to DirecTV, it's trying to please the broadcast networks.

If we win series...
...things ought to begin to resolve.  Right now, with Atlanta doing us a huge favor by beating Milwaukee last night (and the irony of a former Milwaukee team beating the current one is not lost on me!) we are a very important game up in the loss column.

Can the Brewers win two more games over the ever-diminishing remainder of the season than the Cubs?  That is now the question.  And their climb gets steeper every time out.

For the first time in this anxiety-wracked season, I'm beginning to truly believe.  Time is now on our side.

by MN exile on Sep 21, 2007 10:02 AM CDT reply actions

Baseball is always about the odds and anomolies
Cubs odds of taking 2 of 3 over the next three series against teams in last place or near the bottom (Cincinnati) over the course of the season is significant....Winning 6 of 9 and finishing 86-76 is a reasonable projection especially taken that over those 9 starts, 8 of them will be our front line pitchers where 2 of them have a .600 record where the club has won the games they have started. Those two pitchers will appear 4 times, thus one can state that the Cubs should expect a minimum of 3 wins from those 4 starts. Thus you are inquiring whether the Cubs can win 3 of 5 from the other three pitchers who have a .500 record. Based on the fact that the Cubs are playing sub.500 teams the odds are 70% plus that they should win 6 of 9.

Now the Brewers have a harder road to sow...they have to win 9 of ten to win outright and 8 of 10 to tie. They have to face two pitchers who have a combined .666 and .582 club winning percentage and they are facing those two on the road where the Brewers are sub .400. They then come home to face the Cardinals and then Padres, who will be putting forward Young & Maddux along with Tomko and Cassel. Brewers have the best home record,

But the odds of going 8 of 10 is now reduced to 25%, with each loss those odds reduce and the Cubs odds increase.

Now all that can be wiped away by the human factor on the field and why they play the games.

Baseball & odds
Exactly.  Milwaukee's window is slowly and inexorably closing.  If we play good ball at all they're going to need to run the table just to have a chance.

Like I said, I'm beginning to let myself believe.  And looking forward to some October baseball I can actually care about - other than the usual hoping that the Yankees get beat, that is.

Old folks' home...
Probably not a good idea to mention the Brooklyn Dodgers, K.C. (pre-Oakland) A's, Seattle Pilots (who later became the Brewers), NY (now SF) Giants, Washington Senators (who became the Twins), or any of the other baseball history.

And the old Negro Leagues - Ernie Banks playing for the K.C. Monarchs, for example...

Granted, much of that was before my time, still, it's one of the reasons I really do love baseball - it has an amazingly rich history.

Gray hair has some effects, I guess.  At least I still have hair to get gray!

And the amount I learned from my maternal grandfather (and my mother!) about baseball - they took me to my first game in Wrigley,, I think I was 6 at the time.  Or how my two nieces, both now  Chicagoans, are both huge Cub fans.

Or the story I shot a few years back about Bob Casey, the late Metrodome PA announcer - his son was running the low home cam right next to him during the game.

Baseball nostalgia and family connections - maybe subjects for an off-day diary all their own.

Things are beginning to look up
With the loss of the Brew Crew last night, we are back to the usual 1.5 game lead. Atlanta has been hot winning the last 4 and with smoltz and hudson on the mount the next 2 days, this could spell disaster for the brewers. If the cubbies, can pull 2 out of 3 this weekend, We should be sitting up 3 games by the time Tuesday rolls around. The Padres will playing for the division or the wildcard next weekend vs the Crew, the cards are starting to line up in our favor. All we got to do is win and do a little scoreboard watching.

First game of the series most important
Cubs are 17-4 (3 ties) when they win the first game of a series and have won only 5 series when they lost the first game, (their 5th being Houston last week).

Winning this game gives them a 70% of winning the series...it basically then is the difference in the odds of the Cubs losing the next two. Winning this game will put added pressure on the Brewers tonight, where a loss would put them down 2 in the loss column (provided Cubs win) and 3 in the win column.

Just to let you all know; Cubs vs. LHP'ers this yr
Much as been made of the Cubs current record against left handed starters now at 16-22, that said the record at the end of August was 12-20, so they have picked up 2 games on the ratio, going 4-2 to date in September).

---Back at the end of May the Cubs were 5-9....meaning they have won 11 games and lost 13 from the time their season has turned around.
----Meaning if they had won one more game against a left handed starter it would be .500. Cubs will face three lefties this weekend one a bona fide top of the rotation pitcher in Gorz....I think the Cubs will take the Pirates lefties win the series 2 of 3 moving their lefty record to 18-23...or 13-14 since late May.
-----They then are scheduled to face Willis and Olsen where I suspect they will split with them and finish the regular season 19-24 and since June--14-15...I don't consider it a problem.

Now cutting deeper the problem could be that Murton has started to contribute a little more and getting a right handed CF'er might also be a help.

Monroe will make an impact this weekend
He has hit some screaming line drives, a dead pull hitter who will occassionally spray a line drive to right field. His defense is okay and in the small field at Wrigley not much of a liability.

Baseball has so much failure...that it is easy to diss on a player, that is why nine bat....or you have a bullpen.

Monroe is so much better than Neifi than the dripping sarcasm was really uncalled for.

This lineup
is probably close to what we'll have all weekend with all LHP against us.  The only change I could see is kendall catching one or both of the remaining games.

Also, I think last night was the brewers best chance at getting a win vs. the braves...while I doubt they'll get swept I can't see them winning two of the next three.

Lou is playing the HOT HANDS
Besides Soriano's power this month...where he is getting the most possible AB's for this power hot hand...7 HR's and 1.001-OPS
----DeRosa; For the month 23/66 .348....932-OPS
-----Soto  for the month 11/24 .458 ....1.375 OPS!

putting Theriot down in the 8th spot ahead of a good hitting pitcher allows him to use his 'energy game' as Theriot has been fading in September, 13/70 .186 (.256-OBP)....I think we may see Theriot down at that spot for the remainder of the season or unless his game suddenly picks up.

Club stats since June'07; 58-44, against LHP starters; 11-13, and 21-10 in one run games.

by Ivy Walls on Sep 21, 2007 10:52 AM CDT up reply actions

Why Theriot so low?
Any reason The Riot is down in the 8 spot? An attempt by Lou to "reload" the lineup at the bottom and maybe let Soriano get some more RBIs while he's hot?

Whatever it is, I agree with Lou....in Lou I trust ("in Lou we do"? "By Pinella, we're propella-ed"?...nothing seems to have the old "In Dusty we Trusty" ring to it....)

by Chadnudj on Sep 21, 2007 10:53 AM CDT reply actions

perhaps
I like theriot at 8.  He seems to consistantly get good AB's and hopefully he can get onbase for either a sac bunt or to keep the 9 spot from leading off the next inning.   Plus if teams pitch around him to get to the 9 spot he won't strike out swinging at the bad pitches
The Astros just asked me to start their next game

by jds2 on Sep 21, 2007 10:59 AM CDT up reply actions

see above and pay attention
Theriot has had a good year, wrestled SS away from Izturis, been the energy guy offensively but he is fading fast offensively. He is batting a mere .186 in September and an OBP .256....neither are top of the order stats.
----For all the support to move him to lead off in September he only batted .276 with a .315 OBP...far cry from July when he was hot and batted .348 and had a .437 OBP.

Theriot is a valuable player on a team, he gives more offensively than the stats can show, he forces the defense to react but he has to learn to get more hits to left and center field.

Club stats since June'07; 58-44, against LHP starters; 11-13, and 21-10 in one run games.

Sorry I was not insinuating about reading this
board....but saying that Theriot's offensive statistics have been on a slide for some time. Heck he peaked at .290 in late August and now is batting .268...that is big slide....

Not directed at you per se, but this manager unlike the previous ones has stated unequivably that he makes decisions that will give his team the best chance to win. So when he drops a hitter from the #2 to the #8 it is a valid question to inquire, but the obvious is that Theriot has not performed as needed in the role.

DeRosa just came off a 10 for 10 streak against Cincinnati....that by itself would warrant a move by a manager to pull DeRosa up who is hot right now and get him more AB's....the same for Soto...he is exceedingly hot....and doing well behind the plate....ride that horse like a pony express rider....

Club stats since June'07; 58-44, against LHP starters; 11-13, and 21-10 in one run games.

With the Theriot slide
It makes sense that Lou would bump him down in the lineup. Today is a good day to do it, with Marquis hitting ninth. He is traditionally supposed to be a good-hitting pitcher although hasn't lived up to that this year. Still, with that reputation, hopefully he can at least get down a bunt, being that he is not Rich Hill.

by montanacubby on Sep 21, 2007 11:33 AM CDT up reply actions

re: Sorry I was not insinuating about reading this
I think one of the main reasons Theriot's offensive slide has slid by the wayside is that he still does a lot of little things to help the Cubs win games. He's still solid on defense, steals bases, runs out slow rollers, etc.

And I know something Steve Stone remarks upon often is Theriot's batting average after the seventh inning. I'm too lazy to look it up, but I think it may take some of the edge off of his poorer overall numbers.

Wednesday night's game was a prime example of how Theriot seems to always be sparking those late-inning rallies we've come to know and love.

Hello, Soto!

by daver on Sep 21, 2007 11:43 AM CDT up reply actions

granted...I can't access his hit/inning
But the big picture is this. Theriot like all hitters has weak spots and hot spots. FOX has a nice set of graphics and if you look at Theriot he has 23 hits to RF, 18 to center, 9 to left and 8 on the infield and 2 HR's He is hitting .340+ with pitches down the middle (.405 up and middle) and if you pitch him up and outside .320...

The league is beginning to figure him out, but make a mistake up and he hurts you. He is right on the league average for his position, higher  in RBI's by double and runs 77 league average is 18 and okay stealing a base.

He is a strong #8 hitter.

Club stats since June'07; 58-44, against LHP starters; 11-13, and 21-10 in one run games.

too odds set to crossover sometime
The odds that the Cubs will win the World Series will happen as 0 for 99 is an aberration, yet the odds it will happen soon is low since the cubs are 0 for 99.

Which odds will the Cubs organization break. My feeling is that there are reasonable explanations. Between 1906 and 1945 the Cubs were the top NL team in the World Series, 06-07-08, 10, 18, 29, 32, 38 and 45 (9 times one winner). Then the game changed after the war.

First it was money and intergretion where the NY teams had the advantage. Then the draft and expansion. Cubs organization was piss poor through the 50's and rebounded with a good draft and minor league system in the 60s. They fell short in 69 and 71. Then the organization was soft again as FA began to change the game. In the 80s things started turning around when Green came and demanded a new attitude, Then again there was a snakebite in the playoffs and the Cubs were out for 10 years. Now in this decade the urgency returned with the talent.

My thread is that the Cubs need to develop talent in the system and spend money as a top market team.

Neither can the Cubs.  The National Association team started in 1871, and they weren't the Cubs.  They were a completely different team with the same name (White Stockings).

The Cubs only date back to 1876, the year of Custer's Last Stand.

Shawn Johnson, Des Moines, IA, worlds greatest gymnast. 2007 All Around World Champ. GO SHAWN!!!!

by sue369 on Sep 21, 2007 1:55 PM CDT reply actions

I don't understand the reasoning...
behind Monroe playing CF instead of Pie. The LHP vs LHB thing is a wash in this situation because neither one is going to give you any offense anyway, but Pie would have caught that ball.
As I've told you before, I never repeat myself.

by santoswoodenlegs on Sep 21, 2007 1:58 PM CDT up reply actions

Reasoning
The reasoning is that Monroe is a MUCH MUCH better hitter vs lefties than Pie this year.  Pie has shown no sign he has adapted to big league pitching yet.

by californiachicagoan on Sep 21, 2007 2:10 PM CDT up reply actions

Monroe is terrible vs anyone throwing a baseball.
It doesn't matter which arm they use.
As I've told you before, I never repeat myself.

by santoswoodenlegs on Sep 21, 2007 2:11 PM CDT up reply actions

Not defensively...
Pie's speed, glove, and arm are far more valuable to this team right now than whatever your expecting out of Monroe's bat.

P.S. I hope your not expecting much.

As I've told you before, I never repeat myself.

by santoswoodenlegs on Sep 21, 2007 2:16 PM CDT up reply actions

Um no.
Pie's bat is too much of a negative for any amount of defense to overcome.  That is why Lou has him in the late inning defensive sub role, and rightly so.

by californiachicagoan on Sep 21, 2007 2:22 PM CDT up reply actions

Really?
Cause I'm pretty sure Pie catches that ball in Center in the first inning, and I'd say he guns down the runner @ home instead of crapping the bed and zipping one up the first-base line. We'd have the lead.
As I've told you before, I never repeat myself.

by santoswoodenlegs on Sep 21, 2007 2:38 PM CDT up reply actions

Make believe
Well if you wanna play make believe, Pie ground into a double play and this inning ends with Soriano's pop up, and we dont score a run.  As it is that makes it equal in terms of runs (1), but this inning is still going.

by californiachicagoan on Sep 21, 2007 2:40 PM CDT up reply actions

Your not paying attention...
In my magical far-away place Pie would have saved the run in the first inning and another in the 2nd. Lou would have also had him bunt the runners over anyway.
As I've told you before, I never repeat myself.

by santoswoodenlegs on Sep 21, 2007 2:43 PM CDT up reply actions

So you admit Pie
brings nothing to the plate.  You just advocated having him bunt in the 3rd with a runner on 1st and no one out on a run scoring day like today.

Even in your magical far away place where Pie is god, he is laying down bunts.

by californiachicagoan on Sep 21, 2007 2:49 PM CDT up reply actions

Are you and Not Bruce related?
Seriously...where do you get the "Pie = God" idea? I've never said Pie is the end all answer. I'd much rather have (gulp) Jones play CF regularly, but when he needs a rest play Pie. Monroe is a marginal corner outfielder at best. Pie hasn't adjusted to ML pitching yet, but holy hell he can take away hits and runs with his defense.
As I've told you before, I never repeat myself.

by santoswoodenlegs on Sep 21, 2007 2:55 PM CDT up reply actions

Well
When you say that someone's D is good enough to overcome having a .253 OPS vs a .816 OPS.  You are insinuating some remarkable powers.  He basically would have to be able to literally fly into the stands on angelic wings and turn every foul ball and homerun into an out.

by californiachicagoan on Sep 21, 2007 2:59 PM CDT up reply actions

Your assuming again...
I'm not saying he's able to make up the difference in offense compared to an everyday player. I'm saying given the choice between Monroe or Pie playing CF for one day, I'd pick Pie. The End.
As I've told you before, I never repeat myself.

by santoswoodenlegs on Sep 21, 2007 3:15 PM CDT up reply actions

Monroe vs Pie vs lefties
So far this year:

Monroe .282/.312/.504
Pie .114/.139/.114

You can be the gad darn FLASH in the outfield.  You still can't make that up.

How Marquis is off the hook for a loss after that performance is beyond me. I can see why he was left out of the WS last year. I bet Rich Hill would like to see 7 runs in 3 innings once in a while.

He's had growing pains after every promotion. They're just going to be very visible for the time being.

He brings things to the table that this team needs - speed and the ability to play CF. I don't like using him so early, b/c if there is a crucial AB for him later vs. a RHP, they're going to PH Jones, which is a defensive downgrade. But whatever we have to do, I guess.

And though you could be correct about Soto, we can NOT forget the offense and pitcher handling that Kendall has provided the Cubs in the heat of the summer and dog days.

A good team makes adjustments DURING the year as well as off season, and Hendry has been fantastic this year.

But I think the jury is still out about how Soto will handle the pitchers, which we all know is VERY key - especially in the playoffs.

Hopefully, he will be, at worst, a great second backstop that hits great in OTB situations.

Soto rules...
...but let's not let that reflect poorly on Kendall.  I feel a lot better about the Soto/Kendall catching rotation than Barrett/Blanco, or, god forbid, Bowen/Koyie Hill.

by Chadnudj on Sep 21, 2007 3:38 PM CDT reply actions

it only reflects poorly
on the fact that the Cubs should've tried Soto before going out and making a move for Kendall

if for some reason Soto doesnt hit like this when he comes up that move makes it likely that we're staring at Jason Kendall as our starting C next season with Soto wasting away on the bench

the Kendall move never should've been made and Soto should've been given a chance from the start, he did everything he needed to in AAA

the Kendall move didnt turn out to be a bad one because we're in ok shape and we didnt give up much, but it was a completely unnecessary move

and many people on this site defended it and voiced caution against Soto simply because they valued things that cant be proven in any particular way that they actually help the ballclub

Soto's been a better player than Jason Kendall for over 4 months now.... thank god he made the most of a few spot starts and opened this organizations eyes

by sue369 on Sep 21, 2007 3:48 PM CDT up reply actions

kind of
Soto was out but only for a few days

Cubs made the move for Kendall on July 17th

July 17th and 18th Soto was out, July 19th he started behind home plate

the A's were DYING to get rid of Kendall and no one else in the majors wanted him, the Cubs could've waited till August to make that trade through waivers even

i mean when do the A's ever eat salary on a player....

they had time to let Soto play and see if he was really ready or not (if he hadnt already shown enough at the AAA level)

by DartmouthCubsFan on Sep 21, 2007 3:49 PM CDT up reply actions

Kendall trade
Who did we trade for Kendall anyways?  I think the Cubs might be able to chalk up a rare win against A's management.

by californiachicagoan on Sep 21, 2007 3:53 PM CDT up reply actions

Plus Soto came out of nowhere this year
The Cubs were not going to designate him the starter in July based on 2 to 3 months of playing that were far better than anything he ever did before.  If Soto was a highly touted prospect that would have been a different story but prior to this year he was looking like a career backup at best.  There are many cases of players getting hot for a few months and fading out.  I think the Cubs needed some time to really see if this guy was for real.

by rlpete on Sep 21, 2007 3:52 PM CDT up reply actions

yes and no
his numbers were pedestrian in the minors but he was also WAY YOUNG for every league he played in

thus his numbers needed to be taken with a grain of salt, this year at 23 in the PCL he put up the best offensive season of any player

23 in AAA having best season in the entire league makes you an immediate prospect

and someone that should've at least gotten a chance before going outside the organization

by DartmouthCubsFan on Sep 21, 2007 3:55 PM CDT up reply actions

Cubs needed some time
They still do - in how Soto will be able to handle the Pitchers.

They should be able to see that in the remaining games though.
Which again is perfect timing in bringing him up.

"The decline of society is rampant...Cubs winning the WS in '07 will make everything right again."

by Bluelou on Sep 21, 2007 3:57 PM CDT up reply actions

"handling the pitchers"
wouldnt it be obvious by now that Jason Kendall can't "handle the pitchers"

Michael Barrett catcher ERA = 4.17
Jason Kendall catcher ERA = 4.22

he's the same defensively as Barrett... we're allowing the same number of runs (actually a few more) with Kendall behind the plate

how on earth if he's "handling pitchers" so well or if this is his positive trait is it resulting in more runs being allowed

by DartmouthCubsFan on Sep 21, 2007 4:03 PM CDT up reply actions

and pray tell...
who would you have had as our catcher if we didn't go after Kendall?  Soto/Hill? Soto/Blanco?  Please!  Kendall's actually hit close to .300 since he became a Cub. I think it was wise they waited until when they did to call him up. We tend to rush our prospects too quickly. Their patience is paying off dividends as you can see!!

I do think it'll be Soto starting next year with Kendall as his backup. That is also very likely the way it'll be throughout the playoffs!

Kendall's much more reliable AND a better hitter than Blanco!  At least Kendall can play!

I know he is
but I think we need to find a way to get rid of Blanco and re-sign Kendall. I'm fine with Kendall being a backup and he's said he wants to come back and play for the Cubs. I'm sure he'll do what's necessary to make it work.
Missing Da Cubbies from NYC!

by dacubsfan76 on Sep 21, 2007 4:24 PM CDT up reply actions

we'd have been fine
with Soto/Hill or Soto/Blanco once Henry was healthy

its simple to say the move worked out well now, but we could've had this production (both offensively and defensively) from Geovany way before and maybe this race isnt even as tight as it is

the point is the timing of the move for Kendall didnt need to made right then, the Cubs could've given Soto the chance and seen if they needed someone else

and by getting Kendall they delayed us getting a look at Soto, by delaying a look at him they made it all the more likely he wouldn't be our starting catcher next season

if Soto had a few bad AB's during his spot starts we'd be looking at signing Kendall in the offseason to some 2-3 year deal woth 5-6 million and wasting money on a spot we already had a better player in house

and we cant have Kendall and Soto next year because we have Blanco under contract... and teams dont keep 3 catchers on their 25 man roster very often at all

by DartmouthCubsFan on Sep 21, 2007 3:53 PM CDT up reply actions

Blanco is not, and never has been, 100% healthy.
One of the reasons that he made the 25-man roster RIGHT AT Sept 1, and then played his last game on Sept. 3, is that he gives us some more roster flexibility. If Hendry places Blanco on the DL, then some rookie who was not on the roster in time to be post-season eligible (Hart?) can take his spot.

Blanco is under contract for next year, but the odds are pretty strong that he's going to get a $3M severance/retirement package, especially if Kendall's willing to take a part-time role.

by ClosingTime on Sep 21, 2007 4:35 PM CDT up reply actions

How can you question these results?!
We have no way of knowing what might have been.

What we do know is that we're in a pretty sweet situation at catcher right now, with a hotshot youngster who may be the top catching prospect in all of baseball, an veteran with an above-average OBP and a knack for coming through in big spots, and, well, a guy who is going to be a $3M roving catching instructor in 2008.

But I digress. When we hit rock bottom, our catcher was Michael Barrett - lousy offensively, and abysmal defensively. Hendry chose to acquire a MLB veteran catcher, and eventually turned Barrett into Jason Kendall (at league minimum $$) and Kyler Burke, who suddenly found his power stroke in Boise.

Hendry's other option was to promote Soto, who was mashing at AAA. However, at that point, Soto was 1.) injured and unable to play C, and 2.) wrapping up what constituted 2 incredibly out-of-character huge offensive months.

If we'd thrown Soto into the fire, there's no guarantee that he would have translated his early 2007 AAA success into MLB success.

Hendry and Lou chose to bring Soto along slowly, and the result was a PCL MVP award, and a September audition that is exceeding anyone's expectations.

In the meantime, Kendall exceeded all of our expectations offensively, and won some games for us with some timely hitting.

It looks to me like Hendry handled his roster - and his star prospect - absolutely perfectly. I don't know how we can realistically ask for anything more.

by ClosingTime on Sep 21, 2007 4:03 PM CDT up reply actions

yes it worked out well
but it also had the potential for the worst case scenario

which is Kendall shows just enough to keep Soto bench-ridden

we dont get an idea of how "ready" Soto is and sign Kendall to a deal that prohibits Geovany from getting a chance at starting next season and commits more unnecessary dollars to a position that we already had a cheap in house solution (who was out of options mind you)

yes it worked out well, but again i dont judge things "purely" on results

i judge the process

and with the A's having no other potential suitors for Kendall and the Cubs having the hottest hitting catching prospect in all of baseball who was healthy enough to be behind the plate TWO GAMES AFTER THE TRADE WAS MADE, i think they should've waited it out and let Soto catch

the Kendall move could've been made in late July or even August as he EASILY would've gotten through waivers while hitting .220 with a slugging % below .370 and making 8 million

by DartmouthCubsFan on Sep 21, 2007 4:07 PM CDT up reply actions

i judge the process
That's your choice.

I go for the results - which is what determines Worlds Series victories.

The RESULTS of the Sox in '05, and how they've fallen by the "process" sinced then...reinforces that Hendry bringing Kendall over with his bat was a great move.

"The decline of society is rampant...Cubs winning the WS in '07 will make everything right again."

by Bluelou on Sep 21, 2007 4:30 PM CDT up reply actions

Every move has a potential "worst case"
What if they'd handed the job to Soto, and he'd fallen on his face? Or regressed into his pre-2007 self?

The only real option would have been to look outside the organization for the 2008 opening day catcher, at rather large $$ for a rather old guy. And that's on top of the cash they already owe Blanco.

"Minor league seasoning" isn't just myth. Soto had never hit before this season, and getting full year's worth of success and the resulting confidence at the plate has worked wonders.

The process worked. Soto's development has been spectacular, and the team has gotten above-average production on the cheap from the C position all year. The logical conclusion is that he has been handled correctly by the organization.

One final note - there's no way that Kendall was going to get a big $$ multi-year deal from anyone. He's going to be looking for low dollars - he may even return to spell Soto next season.

Blanco is not, and was not, an option. He will made a very good, although expensive, roving minor league catching instructor next year.

by ClosingTime on Sep 21, 2007 4:42 PM CDT up reply actions

see thats where i disagree
no one wanted Kendall, so the worst case scenario is Soto falls flat on his face and we trade for Kendall. The A's were in NO HURRY to deal him since they were willing to eat 85% of his salary, something that team never does

and if Soto fell flat on his face we needed an everyday catcher in 08 regardless of whether we got Kendall or not, meaning we could still get Kendall and still be forced to committ money to him IF we felt Soto wasnt going to be a major league calibur catcher

that scenario isnt nearly as bad as never finding out IF SOTO CAN PLAY and then giving the job to Kendall

that type of process leads you to ignoring in house options in the future and continue to search for outside options

since outside options always cost more than internal options it leads to a problem in philosophy if your team has any type of budget

and as for Kendall not getting a big multi year deal from anyone... we gave Blanco 2.2 million a year, you dont think Kendall would get 2 yrs 10-12 million?????

9-10 v Cards, the make-up game
was a blow out. This game is faaaaaaaaarrrrrr from over, trust me. Unless the Cubs can put another 5-spot on the board, then I would consider this over.

These are the games I grew up with, but have vanished with the advent of global warming and 'changing' wind patterns. As Len said, this would be the 20th game the wind blew out.

In the 60's and 70s, the wind seemingly blew out every game -- and bad Cubs pitching made it worse.

DO NOT consider this game over.

Marmol
I am tempted to not want Marmol in a "blowout" win.  But 5 runs with 3 innings to go on a day where runs are as cheap as they have been at Wrigley in a long time ... ok bring in our closer.

That's closer as in what he does, not what his job title is.

Hello, Soto!

by daver on Sep 21, 2007 3:54 PM CDT reply actions

Soto
will probably be the starter next season. Isn't that good enough for you? This is a good tandem of vet/youth. Kendall's work ethic can only help Soto.

This team, as posted has shown it can use its' kids use and change direction if a kid comes through when given a chance -- which wasn't the case under Dusty -- Theriot, the obvious example.

Yes, Kendall's arm is gone -- but his OBP is going to help this team, should it continuw its' way to the post season.

13 to 7 -- one more run, then it's a laugher.

by San Diego Smooth Jazz Man on Sep 21, 2007 3:54 PM CDT reply actions

Theriot
got 134 ABs under Baker last year, tore the cover off the ball and then started this season on the Bench under Pineilla

Murton got 445 ABs last year and produced an .830 OPS, and found himself in a platoon this year right off the bat

both of the managers we've had the last 2 years prefer veterans and will only play young players when they're really forced to

they're very similar in that regard

see Miller, Wade
Floyd, Cliff
Izturis, Caesar

and all the other vets that sucked up playing time at the beginning of the year UNDER PINEILLA

by DartmouthCubsFan on Sep 21, 2007 4:00 PM CDT up reply actions

Not quite
Do you really think Lou knew what he had in younger talent? When it was obvious Iz was not going to be the answer, Piniella gave Theriot the shot -- and he took the job. You help me make the point -- Theriot earned a shot under Dusty -- he didn't get it. But Piniella was smart enough to realize who the better player was.

Murton was lost in the small army of RF'ers Hendry collected. Floyd -- a Hendry favorite. he was going to play, if healthy.

You will admit Murton wasn't that effective with minimal playing time, so with the plethora of OF talent -- he goes to Iowa.

Miller -- another Hendry reclamation project. Do you think they were going to spend money on hs re hab and NOT use him? He proved he couldn't do it.
He's gone.

There was such a shuttle from Des Moines -- the likes of which I've never seen. I think the players got the message -- do well at AAA, you now have a shot to come up. That wasn't the case before. We've seen most of thre talent at Iowa -- have a shot at Wrigley Field. Sam Fuld? Wh knew? That's Eric Patterson's loss.

It took spring training and 2 months for Piniella to figure it out -- and in soem cases, he was stuck and had to run certain players out there.

by San Diego Smooth Jazz Man on Sep 21, 2007 4:15 PM CDT up reply actions

That's just ridiculous.
Lou has repeatedly given the Cubs' young players chances to succeed, and where they've succeeded, they've seen more playing time, and in more important situations.

Theriot, Marmol, and Marshall all took their jobs from older players. Fontenot worked his way into the lineup, as did Pie for a time.

Lou was the manager of this team for what, a month? before severely curtailing Izturis' playing time.

that Howry had his problems early in the year.  Dempster and Marmol have probably been the most consistent pitchers all season long.  Personally I like it the way it is.  Howry is the 8th inning guy, Dempster is the closer and Marmol is whenever Lou really needs an out.

They have saved this season especially since Z, Hill, Marquis, and Marshall get wild.

Do NOT blame the tech people
Whether the game be on WGN, Comcast, ESPN, and for that matter WGN Radio (I heard a missed first OUT when I was listening in Chicago, as Pat had to say -- "the inning starts with a pop-up on the first pitch, one out, now here's.....")

Blame the suits. Blame the advertising sales departments and station promotion departments of the respective networks. These nets are frantically scheduling as many commercials and network promotional spots between innings as possible....so, if play starts quickly...or the broadcast team gets out of an inning slowly, there will be that possibility the return to the next inning will be screwed up.

The cash register is ringing, and radio/TV sales departments will squeeze in anything -- that's why the "Call To The Bullpen" (or whatever) is sponsored. Ads are squeezed in everywhere and anywhere. And, the station/network wants to cross promote other programming, too.

Do not blame the guys in the TV truck or the radio booth for missing innings. If THEY miss what's been scheduled, there's usually hell to pay.

If this irritates you (as it does me) I suggest you E-mail the station/network in question.

(This is not just a WGN/Comcast 'thing,' let me assure you -- it happens everywhere. Here in SD, the announcers are reading commercials between pitches. The replays are sponsored....pitch counts are sponsored.....the amount of commercial copy that makes its' way into Padres radio & TV broadcasts is astounding....)

I think there's a good chance
I think there's a good chance Kendall will be around next year.  Soto will probably be the starter, but catcher is the position where the correlation between fatigue and diminishing offensive production is highest.  Kendall won't need a lot of cash to get signed, and if we could keep him, he'd be great to catch every few games, tutor Soto, and pinch hit in contact spots (i.e. runner on third, less than 2 out)

the problem there is
that blanco is already signed for next year. i agree that soto and kendall look like the best options so far though....

by anormal on Sep 21, 2007 4:14 PM CDT up reply actions

Blanco's salary is a sunk cost.
The man has eight hits this year.

We're paying him $3M to sit on the bench right now - may as well pay him $3M to sit at home and eat Funyuns next year. Or better yet, make him an instructor.

He's as likely to retire as he is to return to the Cubs - especially if Kendall can be retained on the cheap to be a part-time player.

by ClosingTime on Sep 21, 2007 4:59 PM CDT up reply actions

I see a 60-day DL in Henry' future
If he doesn't retire, I don't see that they can trade him during the off-season.   I think the likely scenario is that he will end up on the DL with a "recurrence" of his issues.   It'll be the 15-day to start, to see if Soto is just a flash in the pan.

If Soto or Kendall are scuffling, then Henry will magically recover. Otherwise, he'll move to the 60-day.   In late June he'll be sent on a rehab start to Iowa, where he can show he still has defensive skills.  Then either he or Kendall will be traded to an AL contender in late July.

by Invalid User on Sep 21, 2007 5:19 PM CDT up reply actions

Yeah,
I think as a tandem they would be a good team.  However I don't want Kendall as our everyday.  Soto is looking good to have that position, but he definitely needs a vet around to show him the ins and outs.

These are the people
who watch a game every now and then, see Dempster blow a save, and then believe it happens every game, and this only happens to the Cubs. Call it tunnel vision, I guess.

His numbers are not terrible. He's a serviceable closer, but he's not as sexy as Trevor Hoffman, Mariano Rivera, and others of that ilk. (Guess they didn't see the Mets relief corps blow the game twice last night in Florida)

The see Dempster give a a run in a non save situation and go berserk. He's challenging the batters to get themselves out -- rather than sneak his off-speed pitch past them. I've said this time and time again, but the more fragile of us here don't care/don't pay attention/don't understand.

Let 'em rant.

Hart
Is eligible for the playoff roster if he replaces a player who was eligible but is on the disabled list.  For example, pitcher has a sore hamstring and goes on the 15 day-DL, Hart can take his roster spot.  Tricky things those hamstrings (wink wink)
