Around SBN: 2012 Africa Cup Of Nations Final

Sweep!

41,364 fans stood as one and did the Braves' Tomahawk Chop not once, not twice, but three times, as the Braves took the lead over the Brewers with a four-run seventh, then extended it with two in the eighth, and finally, when the 7-4 Atlanta win over Milwaukee was posted on the scoreboard.

I can also report to you, since I took a break to the men's room while Kerry Wood took his extended warmup after Carlos Zambrano left with "cramps" (don't worry, he'll be fine!), that the Chop was being done in the men's room down the LF line.

When I got back I told our group this, and Mike cracked us all up when he said, "With what?"

It was that kind of day, celebratory and festive, sunny and gorgeous, dominant pitching and hitting, and the Cubs completed their first series sweep in two months (since mid-July when they swept the Astros at Wrigley Field), by defeating the Pirates 8-0, a three-hit shutout from Z, Wood (who showed how loved he still is during his first at-bat of the year, when the crowd chanted loudly, "Kerry! Kerry! Kerry!", hoping he'd get a hit, and that was a special moment, even though he wound up called out on srikes), and Michael Wuertz, who bookended Z's first-inning strikeout of the side with the same thing in the ninth inning.

And all of a sudden things seem to be clicking on all cylinders. Once again, this was a team win; Matt Murton had three hits and scored a run, Derrek Lee doubled and homered (giving him, at last, twenty for the season) and drove in three, and Ronny Cedeno (!!!, of all people!) put the exclamation points on this win with a two-run homer of his own in the eighth inning, getting his average -- .097 when he was sent down after the games of May 2, 3-for-31, up to the Mendoza Line at exactly .200. His 3-for-4 day made him 13-for-65 with three homers, a very strange batting line, but perhaps one that even wins him a spot on the postseason roster.

I've returned the magic number to the upper left corner -- at four, that seems pretty safe, doesn't it? The Brewers' bullpen, shaky all year, deserted them again today, and the Braves kept some slim hope alive in their own perhaps desperate quest to make the postseason by winning three of four from Milwaukee; with one week to go, there are still five teams (San Diego, New York, Philadelphia, Colorado and Arizona) within two and a half games of three available playoff spots (the Brewers are now three and a half games behind the Cubs for the other). It should make for a rollicking amount of fun the last week of the season in the NL, even as all four of the AL berths are locked up (all that remains there is to determine who is the AL East champion; Boston leads by 1.5 games, and since both the Red Sox and Yankees are in, the East title could be determined by tiebreaker, which the Yankees own).

I don't want to count this before it's official -- as you well know, weird things can and do happen -- but this situation is nearly identical to 1989, when, on the penultimate Sunday of the season, the Cubs defeated the Pirates to move four games ahead with six games to go, a spot they could find themselves in if the Cardinals can find a way to beat the Brewers while the Cubs enjoy a well-deserved day off tomorrow, the final off-day of the regular season. There are more similarities: that 1989 team finished a stretch of 11 wins in 15 games with that September 24, 1989 4-2 win over the Pirates. This year's team has done precisely the same thing -- won eleven of fifteen, dating back to Z's big win over the Pirates in Pittsburgh on September 8. Today's win also makes the Cubs 15-8 in September, 39-30 since the All-Star break, and 61-42 since June 2, the day Mt. Lou erupted, a day that can now be seen as a true turning point for this ballclub.

After that game on June 2, which they lost to the Braves 5-3, the Cubs were 10-17 at home. They finish the home season 44-37 (eight games better than last year's 36-45), and thus were 34-20 at home since June 2, a very impressive mark.

There is still work to be done, of course, and the Cubs cannot take the Marlins (who swept them at Wrigley Field just before that Atlanta series in June) lightly, and I know that Lou won't allow that to happen.

A few more notes about today's game: just as I had hoped when I posted the game thread, Z came out appearing to be a man on a mission. He struck out the side in the first inning and you could see his arm slot was where it was supposed to be, and he threw with passion and purpose. Although he walked three (and I thought plate umpire Bruce Dreckman's strike zone was fair and consistent throughout), he struck out six and allowed only three harmless singles. Wood was superb, walking only one, striking out three and throwing with zip and command -- this is a very, very good sign for his future, and especially going into the postseason. Isn't it nice to know the Cubs now appear to have four pitchers (Wood, Carlos Marmol, Bob Howry and Ryan Dempster) who can get late-inning outs?

Michael Wuertz threw a solid inning in the ninth, striking out the side to end the game with the full house cheering; the crowd brought the season total to 3,252,462, including a dad who brought a little girl who appeared to be about four years old to her very first game; they sat right in front of us, and the girl, who appeared happy but a bit overwhelmed with all the excitement, stayed to sing "Take Me Out to the Ball Game" in the seventh inning, and then departed, happy as we all were.

There is work yet to be done and four numbers to be taken off that magic number, which I've restored to the sidebar; a division could be clinched as soon as Wednesday, but I don't want to seem overconfident. Each game must be approached with the same seriousness and preparation as it's been clear Lou has had his team doing every day this year, and I know he won't let them lose focus now.

Congratulations to those of you who succeeded in getting through the dreaded VWR this morning and getting playoff tickets. Let's hope we get to use every single one of them.

Enjoy the off day, revel in the win, look forward to more wonders to come. Onward!

It would be nice to clinch
in Miami, against the Marlins and their 25-30 fans. Where are they now? No World Series, why go to any games?

It won't be a full house in Miami...
... but I'd bet it'll be 80% Cub fans, maybe 20,000 in the house. Wish I could get down there.

No doubt whatever
few fans will be in FLA, they will be wearing Cubbie-blue! Let's hope the team stays focused and keeps putting wins on the board! Time to filet the fish and make those collars on the Brewers get ever so tighter...especially on that fat guy at first base!!

Wood, Carlos Marmol, Bob Howry and Ryan Dempster
I know that CUbs fans don't like to even THINK about the goings on of south side...

But there are SO many similarities to this team and the '05 Sox...and they are all the GOOD similarities, with the pitching staff situation being one of them.

If you all remember - guys like (gulp) Neil Cotts (OUCH! that hurts to even say that name) and Cliff Politte, who both literally came out of nowhere to be basically un-hitable...

And I know I've brought it up before, but the Sox also utilized not one, or two, but THREE closers that year, with Jenks - being a drinking carouser on his last leg with the minors and a throw away from the LA breed, stepping up in the moment and now being one of the strongest closers in the league and fresh off a record tie set back in 1972.

The Cubs SHOULD have pulled this off in '03, and who can REALLY explain why they didn't (and I DON'T mean Bartman!)?

The bottom line, is the "magic", or whatever you wanna call it, is coming around right now just like it did two years ago for the other Chicago team.

AND IT'S THE CUBS TURN, BABY!

I have been saying and truly believing it since the beginning of the season (even my father doubted and he has been witness to my steadfast belief), that the Cubs would be fine with the team Hendry put on the field, along with the best fit of a manager you could find in modern day in Sweet. sweet Lou.

GOOOOOOOOOOOOOO CUBS!!!

I think it was last week
on one of the sports stations on TV that a fan at a Florida home game got thrown out for arguing with the ump? I think the actual turnout was a thousand people or so. The umps could hear every fan's comments!

Actually....it would be nicer
to clinch Friday evening in Cincy..There, you'll have a stadium FULL of Cub fans and would definitely be a home game for them......selfishly I hope so anyway, as my family's planning to be in Cincy for Friday and Saturday's game.

No, it wouldn't be nicer, really...
You want this finished ASAP. I understand you'd like to witness the 'win' in person, but the Reds are still very dangerous -- right now, the most dangerous team left in the NL Central, so I don't want that series to mean anything.

If the Brewers continue to stumble, this could be done by Thursday night. I hope it is.

You'll still enjoy the games -- I promise. That time between clinching and the beginning of the payoffs is carefree -- calm before the storm.

Lou can also set his pitching the way he wants it for the post-season. It's essentially set now, but still....I'll take a worthless 3 game series.

by San Diego Smooth Jazz Man on Sep 23, 2007 9:52 PM CDT up reply actions

Absolutely right...
I want this clinched Thursday night when SD beats Milwaukee.  I want Z to pitch at most 50 pitches on Friday as a tune-up for the playoffs, same with Hill on Saturday, and let the pitchers not on the playoff  roster all get appearances on Sunday.

Friday night in Cincinatti
Friday in Cincinatti is my prediction.

And my hope because I can't be in Miami but will be going to Cincinatti Friday morning unless the Cubs have it clinched.

A lot more Cub fans will be there too is another reason to hope for it.

And the Reds fans are baseball fans.  There will be some that go to the game to see an event including my friend who is hosting me and the hubby this weekend.

just ordered tickets for Friday and Saturday
I live in Ohio and took Friday off of work. I'm hoping both games will be meaningless -- and that I won't have to pony up for Sunday.

A month ago, I didn't think I could even make the game -- even though I live 90 minutes from Great American.

For her birthday, I bought my mom tickets to the Tigers-White Sox series at the Cell next weekend. My mom (a diehard Tigers fan) turned 60 on June 1 -- the day of the Barrett/Z fight. I ordered the tickets figuring the Cubs were basically done and that the Tigers (and maybe the Sox) would be playing for something meaningful in late September.

Of course, the last three-plus months changed a lot of things. My mom, realizing the Tigers are sadly done, told me today not to worry about the Sox and to go to Cincinnati. She and my dad will drive to Cincinnati for Saturday's game if it's meaningful.

My mom's a beautiful human being.

The way to do this is to put a sentence or two from the article and a link to the original source.

Big H makes me eat my words...
...and that's fine because it's great to be wrong when the Cubs benefit.  (Previously I had posted indicating to pitch Z only once more if at all before the season ends.)  Much more words to eatfrom a previous post indicating my negative verdict in Wood, although i did indicate that Wood needs to be used in mop up type rolls until he can get/show control/command of pitches.  So, I like that Lou used Wood and Weurtz today  (Weurtz needed an easy comeback game.)  The Cubs bullpen is not too far from being dominant.  There are some talented young arms there and some vets who are getting it done.  If they keep clicking and dempster hodls up, the Cubs have a real shot to make it to the WS.  This is exciting!

The adage gets old, but when you pitch, you win. Really like how the pen is set up, and Cubs starters are throwing well. I agree with the comment about Eyre, is been tremendous the second half, and the Cubs need him.
You know I was a Girardi guy, and Lou so far at this point in the season has proved me wrong. He really seems to be the right manager for this club. I agree with you Al, he won't let this team come off the pedal.
The Cubs have turned themselves into a good team.

The Tomahawk Chop
Your story in the recap is very funny, Al.

I was watching the Braves-Brewers game in my cable box's PIP and switched to the Atlanta game during a WGN commercial break. BTW, they used the game as a rehearsal for TBS playoff coverage, with Chip Caray and Tony Gwynn doing the game broadcast and Ernie Johnson showing highlights from the studio.

In one of those highglight breaks, Ernie Johnson showed the reaction from Wrigley Field, with the fans in the bleachers doing the Tomahawk Chop when the scoreboard showed that the Braves went ahead. Chip started to laugh very loudly, almost rooting for the Cubs. When that inning ended, his comment before the commercial break was that they are celebrating in Chicago.

And on WGN, Brenly cracked me up when he commented that this wasn't obviously in Atlanta because the chop wasn't coordinated.

I envy those who were at the park today because you could feel the electricity of the playoff chase, no doubt.

by Fraggin Judge on Sep 23, 2007 8:31 PM CDT reply actions

Brenly
cracked me up, because I went down to Atl in '03 for all three playoff games.  The chop was awful.  Those Braves fans weren't in unison, they weren't with the tune, and I saw many of them hitting themselves in the head.  It was like watching intoxicated old women doing the Macarena or the YMCA at a wedding.

Tell you what though, if he puts up numbers like 40+ HRs, 100+ RBIs and 100+ runs, I'll be more than willing to give him all the time he needs to get comfortable at the position again.

In all seriousness, I'd be wary of adding another superstar ego to what looks like the beginning of a very good team chemistry environment here except for the fact that Lou is running the team now and I've become very confident in his ego-managing abilities.

I think this team rocks as it's setup now. I don't know what I would do to change it at least as far as the starters go.

Fontenot, Cedeno, Fuld, whoever, they've all stepped up at certain times. Sure, losing Cedeno for Arod wouldn't be bad. But I think there would be issues with Theriot.

Either way, it's just idle speculation and the playoffs haven't even started.

Lou
I too was a Girardi supporter but Lou made me a believer early on.  He really knows how to handle a pitching staff.  His use of Marmol is genius.  All saves aren't made in the 9th inning.  Lou invariably brings in Marmol in clutch situations and the kid has come through every time.

He's also done a great job with Eyre and with Jones, being patient through their struggles and nursing them back into the lineup and productivity.

Right now, he's got the cojones to go with a hot hitting (and fielding) rookie catcher over an established veteran.

It's been a long time since a Cubs manager consistently has out-thought the guy in the other dugout.

Hats off to Lou.  He's our MVP.

by Clark Addison on Sep 23, 2007 9:37 PM CDT reply actions

Cubs' Best Manager??
I totally agree with this comment.  I really wanted Joe G. to get the Cubs job, but Sweet Lou has made a believer out of me.  His careful handling of Eyre and Jones (and that guy named Wood) has been fabulous.  In prior years, these guys would have been traded (sad to say but Jones was traded, except for yet another attempt by Bud Selig to screw the Cubs - that one back fired, didn't it "proud to be your Bud?"), and we would have been treated to seeing yet another former Cub starring on some other team going deep in the playoffs.

The only part of the comment I don't agree with is the last one where he says "It's been a long time since a Cubs manager consistently has out-thought the guy in the other dugout."  My questions is, "who was the other Cubs manager that did this?"  I can' think of anyone.  Leo Durocher was fun to watch, but I don't know if he out thought anyone.  Don Zimmer somehow caught lightening in a bottle, much as I love the guy, but I doubt that he out-thought anyone.  And Dusty Baker overused pitchers, refused to play the new guys (The Riot wouldn't have had a chance under Baker), and generally careened through the season without doing much other than penciling in the lineup card.

Hey Chicago, whadya say?  The Cubs are going to win today!  (I can't get that song out of my mind and it feels so good - God Bless Steve Goodman, and I hope you're enjoying this as much as we are Steve).

I don't know why the Cubs are not giving Zambrano a water that is very popular out here on the west coast.  It is called "Smart Water."  It is basically mineral water chocked full of electrolytes.  This would really help with the cramps.  Get with it, Cubs!  Spend the extra money and go with the gourmet H2O.
Prince Fielder...he is neither.

I am really torn ...
I'm going to Monroe, Michigan the first weekend of the playoffs (October 6-10) for their annual Custer Week celebration ... I'm really starting to regret that decision.  So, I'll be stuck socialising and pre-selling the book when I really should be watching Cubbie baseball ... I hope?!

I've been a Cub fan since birth, a Custerphile since 1991 ... yikes!

Like I said, I'm torn.

Book?
Do you have a book published?

Good job. That's not an easy thing to do.

It's at the publisher ...
Took four years to write; through Cub victories and losses ... and most significantly, my husband's death in March.  But he had complete faith in Uncle Lou and Big Z!

The trip to Monroe, MI is not only a party, but research for The Sequel.  Still, I hate I'll--hopefully--miss some Cubbie playoff victories!

The book ... or the Cubs?  What's more important in my heart?  I'm twisted in a million ways!

I'm sure you've asked this question already.
But I would think that you have a good guess as to what your husband might think about this.

I'm very sorry for your loss. I don't know how old you are, but I gather you're fairly young and that your husband died young. I have no idea what I would do in your situation. Heaven knows I've thought about it. I type this as my wife sleeps soundly on the couch just a few feet from me.

I don't know you and I didn't know your husband, but I would have a feeling that if going to that conference is make or break for the book, or the sequel, he'd probably say go to the conference (or festival). Otherwise, I would think it's a good idea to go have some fun. Cubs game playoff (win or lose)=fun.

I hope I'm not speaking out of line here.

I think ...
He'd be kind of torn as well.  Thanks to my influence, he was a recent convert to baseball and Cubs' Nation (a big, big Big Z fan) .  But he also wanted to see me succeed in the (LOL) literary world--P believed I was the best unpublished writer he'd ever read (of course he was biased).  Still, it's typical that the year the Cubbies make the playoffs--again--I'm going to be far from a television and in some VFW hall.

The husband recorded Game Six in 2003; I think I might have been at my critique group.  I know I came home and my neighbor called, "They're close!  They're close!"  Obviously, that was before that damned 8th inning.

Yeah, P was relatively young--just 50.  I am younger ... but it came as a shock.  He was fine at Christmas.

As for the craft, I do mentor new writers as well as edit more established ones.  I am quite demanding and can be harsh.  If you'd like help with your own stuff, contact me through my profile.  There are no secrets to good writing, just inexperience.

Again, I'm being presumptuous
But I have a feeling that he would want you to have some fun.

Baseball games are almost always fun.

50 is very young to die and would be a shock. I'm sorry about that. I haven't the slightest idea how I would deal with that. I don't expect I'd be able to to do anything, really.

I realize that the vicissitudes of publishing are impossible to predict and showing up at a particular place may be something that has an influence on what you do more than it probably should.

That really is a conundrum.

My advice, and I've already overstepped my bounds, is to go to the ball game. Obviously you haven't asked for my advice, so take that as it is.

Oh and by the way
If I haven't stepped over a line with my previous post and you're still reading what I write, I'm very curious about your book.I've been very close to writing a book for a very long time and 4 years is a long time to invest in that sort of thing.

That's a lot of work and anybody who can get it done and get it published deserves more credit than most people understand.

I was invited to that by friends who live up there.

I said I'd go but am wondering.

If I wind up going I'll stop by and say hello.

I'll be there for the second weekend (10-6).
I'm pals with the guy who "plays" Custer; I'm sort of his pet project right now (he loves my book), so I'm attending as his special guest.  There's going to be a re-enactment of the Custers' wedding on Sunday, the 7th ... it's happening in the church where Armstrong and Libbie actually wed.

And no, I ain't wearing no hoopskirt.

Long Time Bleacher Fan in Florida
Not everyone will be wearing Cubbie Blue in Miami.
The Cubs minor league team in Daytona put up a couple of jerseys for auction this past week. One of them was manager Jody Davis' red jersey. Jody also autographed the number 7 on the back.

And the best of all, I was the winning bidder.

And better yet I bought tickets (not hard to do in Miami) for all 3 games.

I will be sitting on the third base side near the Cubs dugout with I am sure a number of travelling and transplanted Cubs fans. Hope to see some of you there. I moved from the Chicago area late last summer and this has been hard not being to a couple of dozen games in the bleachers this year like I did for the past many years.

I also picked up one of the "Lou Man Group's" t-shirts on line this past week. Have a question about the shirt -- does anyone know if Lou gave the OK for the shirt to be printed? The website said that a portion of the proceeds was going to JDRF. Just want to make sure that this is something legit and not something that Lou did not approve.

I don't live in Miami but in a town about an hour north of Tampa. Will be heading out late morning for the first game Tuesday night.

Then got even better news today. I was able to wade through the dreaded Virtual Waiting room and got tickets for the second game in Chicago. If the Cubs stay on a roll, I may not get to use them but at least I can think about going. I am flying up to Chicago on the first for my granddaughter's Baptism.

This has been one hell of a ride and let's hope we can all celebrate the ultimate victory.

Yost blames the umps
I was listening to part of the Brewers-Braves game on XM (Skip Caray), alternating between that and the Cubs game, and it was great to listen to the 7th and 8th innings.

Anyhow, it appears that Ned Yost will be sending a hefty check to MLB.
http://www.jsonline.com/watch/?watch=1&date=9/23/2007&id=29542
http://www.jsonline.com/story/index.aspx?id=666062
Here are his comments, where he lays the blame for the Brewers loss completely on the umpires. Comments like this result in big fines. I'm sure that Yost doesn't care much about that, clearly he was looking to fire up his players and the fans. What he does fail recognize, even if the umps made a bad call or two, is that his oft porous bullpen played a big role. Typically a tirade like this one is the last gasp effort, and you can't blame Yost, who may lose his job if the Brewers don't pull off a last week run and the Cubs fall apart.

by dmlichte on Sep 23, 2007 11:11 PM CDT reply actions

I'm not entirely sure ...
Yost didn't have a point.  Today's play at second looked mighty close.  As much as I'd love the Brew Crew out of it, I'd hate to see them go down on a bad call.  That seemed to take the wind out of their sails--but from what I've gotten from this site and others, that's the hallmark of inexperience ... and young they are.

- SIGH - LONG
But fun Sports maraton, attending BOTH Cubs and Bears.

1-1.

Cubs looked AWESOME. This was my "dream" type of play I had envisioned  - or longed for - during Spring Training.

The Bears...UGH.

Just completely outplayed. I don't know if it was heard on TV, but the chant of Griese! Griese! was pretty loud.

I do not know if it the answer - but what would it hurt to give it a try?  Lovie and Lou are not of like mind in this regard, me thinks...

It is SEPTEMBER, and we're STILL IN IT! YES!

by TheEman on Sep 23, 2007 11:11 PM CDT reply actions

What are they going to do?
I don't like Grossman's performances any more than the next guy but Griese is not the long term answer.  The bears need/half to develop grossman, they just have to.  They can't start over...the team is built to win the SB for the next 2-3 years and that is it.

If they bench Grossman, he is done and then we are stuck with Griese or Orton.  Griese maybe gives you one good year and Orton has no arm strength.  So then want happens, they have to sign some vagabond quarterback or draft and develop a new quarterback.  Well, if they draft and develop a new quarterback...the 2-3 year window for getting back to the SB goes away.

I don't think the defense is a good as people think...and it will be worse if any of the injuries tonight are very serious.  Their success last year was all based on turnovers...which they are not getting yet this year.  That created a short field for the offense.

If the defense is not as good, then the offense becomes more important.  I don't believe that Griese will give ya much more than Grossman especially if you need him to make plays and not just protect the ball

by TheRiot Police on Sep 23, 2007 11:59 PM CDT up reply actions

If your SB window is 2 years, then Griese IS...
...your answer.  2, even 3, years is not long-term and I'm fairly confident Griese can run a team for 2 more years before he's put out to pasture.

I'm not a huge Bears fan by any means, so I'm not as knowledgeable as most here in Chicago.  But that also probably makes me a bit more objective than most and here's what I see.

I'm not saying Griese is going to win games for you, but I'll go out on a limb and say he's not going to lose games.  And right now, Grossman IS losing games.  He hasn't lost his confidence, but he's clearly frustrated and doesn't know what to do.  Kinda reminds me of the Kevin Costner character in the golf movie Tin Cup.  He knows he has the talent, but he can't get rid of the yips.  Pretty soon he's trying all these training gizmos, wearing all these gadgets and reading self-help books.

The Baltimore Ravens won the super bowl a few years ago.  Remember who their QB was?  I don't.  But I do know that he mostly handed the ball off and threw a controlled short passing game.  In other words, he didn't make mistakes.  Nothing fancy.

I think the Bears could be in a similar situation if they just played to their strengths - defense and special teams.  As for the offense?  Their motto should be "Just don't screw it up, baby".

I know, I know - the games will be boring as hell.  But I bet they'd win a lot more going that route than they will if they stick with Rex.

But Lovie is about as stubborn as another leader I know from Texas.  Except this one is in Washington DC now...

Cubs and Browns?
That's nothing.  I'm a Cubs and Packers fan.

It's easier to do when you don't live in Illinois or Wisconsin.  I'm on the outskirts of Vikings territory, which also explains why I don't hate the Bears.

My NBA and NHL team choices are even stranger.

Me too!
But I live in Chicago.  The key to my survival is not being a horse's ass when Farve has a good game.

That and I've never been an either/or kind of fan.  I love the Packer's, and have been since the "glory days" of Lynn Dickey and James Lofton.  But the Bears are a great team with an awesome history and they are great for the city. I'll root for them 14 weeks of the year.

Yeah, I've never been the type to really rub it in someone's face.  Except for Vikings fans, and they usually start it.

For a number of years, the Bears were my second-favorite team.  Hell, I was pulling for them in last year's Super Bowl.

Before each game, please remember to feed the bats.

Many thanks
to all of you who contribute on the matchday thread(s).
I was starting work today and knew it would be around the 8th or 9th inning, and rather than just open gameday and see the score I decided to read the posts from the first inning onward and have a 'virtual' game from a fans perspective open in my mind. It was fun to read along through the innings (esp when the Braves tacked on to make it 7-4) and the excitement and joy was obvious and I could feel the vibe all the way here in Melbourne!
I love all the contribution (positive and negative) and right now is a great time to be a cubs fan and get involved in this hunt for the playoffs.
Im lovin' every minute of it.

Thats right
Im an Aussie, but did live in the US and Canada backpacking for 2 years. I didn't realize that you guys don't use 'match' as a term for contest either!
Baseball is now only played on a lowly pastime level with the collapse of the national league which ran for about 10 years and did have the odd player make the dance (Lloyd,Nilsson,Shipley ect)but think only Moylan (Braves reliever) is a regular big leaguer currently, although there are many still in farms according to this site.

We use "match" to describe...
...contests in the 'net' sports - tennis, volleyball, and badminton.  I've also seen it sometimes for ice hockey and soccer/rugby.  Not a team sport per se, but it's used to describe boxing events as well.

And of course, chess.  ;-)

Wow!! I know it's just a silly rumor, but wouldn't it be something if we get this guy!!  Maybe we could trade Ramirez and really get a potent lineup or pitching.  I know A-Ram is a favorite, bu baseball is a business and as someone pointed out on this board earlier in the season, you got to put your best lineup out there every day.  The Red Sox won it all after trading fan fav Nomar.

say thank god for football about this time of year. This year I'm saying thank god for baseball. I really think the Cubs are going to do it, they are putting everything together right now. The Bears on the other hand, yuck! No offense whatsoever. Even in the win against the Chiefs, the defense and Devin Hester were responsible for most of the offense. I say try Griese for awhile, he couldn't do much worse. Rex just isn't developing.
