Open Thread: Cubs vs. Marlins, Tuesday 9/25, 6:05 CT

Here we go! Figured you'd like to start weighing in early, so this is up early.

Oh, and we really owe these guys one.

 Today's Starting Pitchers
Ted Lilly
 T. Lilly
Cubs
vs. Dontrelle Willis
 D. Willis
Marlins
15-7 W-L 9-15
3.78 ERA 5.32
168 SO 137
54 BB 79
28 HR 28
vs. Fla -- vs. Cubs
Ted Lilly is 0-3, 5.16 in four career starts vs. the Marlins. Many would look at that and cringe, but it doesn't mean that much. Only one of those was this year -- on May 30 at Wrigley Field. Lilly gave up five runs in seven innings, but also struck out nine. Before that his previous start vs. Florida was in 2003, ironically enough, against Dontrelle Willis. He also faced them in 2001 as a Yankee and as a 23-year old Montreal Expos rookie (get a load of some of the people who played in that game!). It's all virtually meaningless, although Dan Uggla is 2-for-3 (both HR) off Lilly, and Miguel Olivo 4-for-8 with 3 HR.

If Lilly gets the win tonight, that would be the most wins in a season by a Cubs lefthander since 1970, when Kenny Holtzman won 17.

Dontrelle Willis is an enigma. He's having the worst year of his career at an age (25) when he should be starting to peak. Always a good hitter, he's having the best year of his career at the plate (.271/.328/.475, 2 doubles, 2 triples, 2 HR in 59 AB). Maybe he should try the Rick Ankiel track? Anyway, he's started eight career games against the Cubs and is 3-3, 4.16; the Cubs hit him pretty hard on May 29 at Wrigley Field -- HR by Theriot and D-Lee, but the Marlins won. Alfonso Soriano has him figured out (.471/.526/.765 -- 8-for-17, 2 doubles, a HR); Mark DeRosa (5-for-10, a double, a HR) and Matt Murton (4-for-7, a double) have also hit him hard.

Alternate-year rule: the Cubs swept the Marlins in Miami in 2005, and got swept there in 2006. Here's hoping the "odd-numbered year" rule is in effect this week.

Record possibilities: the 38 HR the Cubs have hit this September have tied the team record for HR in September, set in 2004. And Alfonso Soriano's 12 HR this month is one short of the club record for HR in September -- 13, set by Ernie Banks in 1957.

Club record notes: the Cubs are 61-42 since June 2, the best record in the NL since that date, and 50-34 since June 23, the best record in the NL Central since that date (by seven games over the Reds).

Today's game is the final WCIU game of the year in the Chicago area, meaning it'll be available to those with enormous rabbit ears on their TV's. Or local cable. Or EI, or today's Mediacenter link.

let's just win 4 of the next 6 so we don't have to worry about what anyone else (you know who) does.

Looking at the forcast, looks like it's supposed to be really wet for today AND Tommorow.   Lets hope we get these games in!

You're right
we need to get these games in, and win at least two of them in Florida.  Nailing it down by Friday would be nice...although I'll just take nailing it down at all!

3 game lead, and I don't know about you guys, but I'm still a little nervous. A "W" tonight would relax me a little bit.

i'm in Miami now
heading to the game tonight, the stadium is actually in Davie which is a bit closer to Fort Lauderdale than Miami, but regardless

its raining down here right now, nothing significant just drizzling a bit

but its pretty dark and ominous

of course my view is EAST and the stadium is Northwest from me right now, but thats my weather report for anyone interested

by DartmouthCubsFan on Sep 25, 2007 3:48 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Weather Underground
says
Widely scattered showers and a few thunderstorms will continue to affect the eastern half of the South Florida peninsula through 6 PM EDT. This activity will be most concentrated across portions of Broward and Miami-Dade counties...and particularly in the region along and south of a line from Flamingo to North Miami Beach."

Good news is that is sounds like it's going to stop raining in Miami in a half an hour or so.

The bad news is that the forecast is just as crummy for tomorrow and Thursday.  They really have to get this game in tonight.

In that game that Lilly pitched for the Expos, D. Lee hit a homerun.

I don't see Milwaukee losing he rest of the way. San Diego is hurting and St. Louis is dead. If we lose and Milwaukee wins tonight, you win see panic on this site tomorrow like you've never seen, including me.

Re: We need a win
Not that this means a whole heckuva lot (though it may reflect their youth and the inconsistency of their pitching staff) but the Brewers have not won as many as 7 games in a row all season, which is what they would have to do to win out.  Moreover, they've had only 2 winning streaks of more than four games (one of 5 and one of 6).  With all due respect to the baseball gods, I'd be shocked if the Brewers did not lose one or two games down the stretch.

That being said, I desperately want a win with Theodore on the hill tonight.

by Born Again Cubs Fan on Sep 25, 2007 3:45 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

I see the brewers losing one more game.
they won't sweep the pads. the cardinals are the worst team in the league, but if they going to win a game, it will be this one, though looper is crap at night.

by buckmulligan on Sep 25, 2007 5:19 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

They'll lose three more
One to the Cardinals and two to the Pads, who still will be in wild-card contention by the time they hit the Beer City.

In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if Looper beats the Brewers tonight.

Anxiety is right....
I'm already driving myself nuts......Do all fans feel this way? I'm a big Broncos fan but I don't remember feeling overly nervous the years they won the Super Bowl. Must be a pain avoidance tactic....

by chucolo on Sep 25, 2007 3:37 PM CDT   0 recs

Well, FLA is the place to do it...
Maybe he should try the Rick Ankiel track?

...there would be ample opportunities to rack up stats when it does not matter, I guess. Can you believe it was less than three weeks ago when journalists (sic) were stating the case for Ankiel for MVP without hyperbole?

Anybody think Ramirez has a serious shot at MVP?

by DonGerard on Sep 25, 2007 3:43 PM CDT   0 recs

I'd think...
... Ramirez might if he put up some numbers in the last week, and the Cubs made the postseason, and voters remember that he has missed almost 30 games. He could easily have well over 30 HR and close to 120 RBI.
"That's my opinion and if you don't like it, well, I have others." ~ Groucho Marx

by Al on Sep 25, 2007 3:44 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

I think the 30 missed games
should count against him.  When Rollins is heading for 162 games and Wright/Holliday around 160, I think they should get extra points for that.  If Ramirez hadn't gotten hurt, he might have a chance.  With the injury, I don't think he deserves it or has a chance.  It's going to be Wright, Holliday or Rollins.

by rlpete on Sep 25, 2007 4:36 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

And I forgot Fielder
but if Milwaukee doesn't make it, I'm not sure he'll get it.

by rlpete on Sep 25, 2007 4:38 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

probably not
if the Mets and Brewers don't make it, then it will go to Rollins, who clearly doesn't deserve it..
Now that he is back, play Matt Murton!!

by Chanman25 on Sep 25, 2007 3:45 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

clearly doesnt deserve it?
is that sarcasm...

he has 26 win shares (7th in the NL), league leader is Wright with 32

Aramis has 22 (17th in NL)

by DartmouthCubsFan on Sep 25, 2007 3:51 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Yeah, I figured as much...

Apropos of nothing much, really, other than your log-on name, my girlfriend is a Princeton grad and she got me a "Duck Fartmouth" t-shirt.

...but she only lets me wear it to Illini Hockey games where it doesn't make much sense, but is still pretty funny.

I would have also accepted "If It's Brown, Flush It Down", "Columbiatch" or, the classic, "Harvard Sucks".

by DonGerard on Sep 25, 2007 3:56 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

well..
I could name five other players who I think deserve the award over him and another one is on his own team.

He is a great player, but not the best this year. And bases on your stats, if he is No. 7, who is Number 1? Shouldn't he be given the MVP then??

Now that he is back, play Matt Murton!!

by Chanman25 on Sep 25, 2007 3:56 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

yes
Wright is #1 and should clearly win it, he's far outpaced everyone else

regardless Rollins isnt such a horrid candidate that it should be tossed aside... any moreso than Holliday or Ramirez or anyone else mentioned

by DartmouthCubsFan on Sep 25, 2007 4:00 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Actually...
if you are talking about outpaced everyone in the statistic category, you are way off.

I dont think he leads any of the candidates in any category.

Holliday leads almost all of them.

and by Win Shares (which i didnt post in the other diary)

by DartmouthCubsFan on Sep 25, 2007 4:22 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

OK.
This is why i am not much of a stat guy.

I just think the value you have to your team should determine the MVP.  But it never does.

Same with gold gloves - usually it is about your fielding and hitting.  Not just fielding.

"I love this world. I hope hell is as much fun!"

by HIGGY on Sep 25, 2007 4:23 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Win Shares...
...were probably Bill James's worst idea. (Yes, I can be critical of Bill James!)

VORP isn't perfect, either, but until such a time as I have enough spare time to figure out Linear Weights it's the best thing I have at hand. And as an added bonus, it does the positional adjustment. It doesn't consider defense, but WARP is a pain in the ass to deal with and wildly flawed besides. SuperVORP is the best all-around metric, except BP won't publish it. Ok, way-too-dull aside, well, aside...

Hanley Ramirez is the best offensive player in the National League, once you give him credit for being a shortstop. But the Fish have the worst record in the NL, so it's hard to see him getting the award. That leaves David Wright, who at 78.6 is wildly better than the Cubs' VORP leader, Derrek Lee, at 47.1. (For those curious -- yes, if Ramirez had more playing time he'd probably eclipse Lee.)

Trying to award an MVP from the Cubs is kindof a fools errand -- the Cubs have three very good hitters in Lee, Ramirez in Soriano who still aren't quite up there with the elite top-ten talents in the NL. That makes it hard to make the case for any of them as the one "most valuable" to the Cubs success.

(On a side note -- Ryan Braun's VORP is spectacular given when he started playing this season, but I'm starting to truly have misgivings as to what rate his defense offsets his accomplishments on offense.)

If by serious, you mean top five
then, yeah.

But realistically, I don't see voters putting ARam ahead of Wright, Holliday, Howard (or Rollins) and of course, Prince Fielder.

Based on stats, I'd give it Holliday.  Based on where the team would be without him,  I'd give it to Prince.  But voters tend to weigh heavily (unfairly so IMO) whether or not a team makes it to post-season, so Holliday and hopefully Fielder are out.

Figure that Howard and Rollins split the Philly vote and that leaves Wright.

Unless the Mets choke big-time this week.  And wouldn't that be a sweet end-of-the-season present for Santo...  ;-)

Holliday
should be in the discussion even if the Rockies can't find a way to steal the wild card - 1st in RBI's, 4th in HR's, 2nd in Avg, 2nd in .OPS.

...and 7th in win shares (26).

This series feels like a trap
A down-year Dontrelle Willis and two no-name starters. All three starters with 5+ ERAs. A Marlins team hopeless out of contention. Yep, I gotta bad feeling about this one.

Apparently Murton will start in RF next year

Cliff Floyd, who is a free agent after the 2007 season, says he would be willing to return to the Cubs in a reduced role next season.
"Oh, yeah," Floyd said. "But it's something they'd have to look at, because I'm not a pinch-hitter. I have not done well there -- let's be real with it. So I don't know whether I'd fit into their system. But anything's possible." The Cubs have Matt Murton in place to take over the right field permanently in 2008, but Floyd could return if he is willing to accept a reasonable contract.

and the fact that if you hit the bottom of the chair next to you down (the way to make noise at the stadium), you could hear the echo after it bounced off the opposite wall a second later.

montreal!  get a new baseball team!!!

Love Montreal
as a city. The baseball experience there was different, but cool in its own way.

At least you never had a problem getting good seats.

i went once
and got 5 tickets for 10 canadians dollars (which was about 1.25 a ticket back when the canadian dollar was worthless).

proceeding to go in and realize that the tickets we had bought were in a section that did not exist.  whoops.  still got to watch the expos get crushed for a buck twenty five.
