Open Thread: Cubs vs. Marlins, Wednesday 9/26, 6:05 CT

Four years and two days ago, a Cubs pitcher, much-maligned over the course of the 2003 season, was sent out to the mound on a Wednesday evening to throw in a road game that the Cubs desperately needed to win to solidify their tenuous hold on the Central division lead.

Shawn Estes responded with a four-hit shutout of the Reds, his best game of the 2003 season.

Jason Marquis, we need the very same thing from you this night. Go get 'em!

 Today's Starting Pitchers
Jason Marquis
 J. Marquis
Cubs
vs. Daniel Barone
 D. Barone
Marlins
12-8 W-L 1-3
4.35 ERA 5.30
103 SO 17
73 BB 17
22 HR 10
vs. Fla -- vs. Cubs
Marquis is 4-4, 6.85 in 16 appearances (nine starts) lifetime vs. Florida and got hit pretty hard the only time he's faced them this year, on May 29 at Wrigley Field. What more can be said? He's simply got to get past those bad numbers and throw well tonight.

Daniel Barone is yet another young pitcher who the Cubs have never faced. Usually, that's the kiss of death -- but this kid has walked seventeen and given up ten home runs in only 37.1 innings this season. I say the Cub bats light him up early and often. Incidentally, he is the grandson of Dick Barone, who had a 3-game cuppa coffee with the 1960 Pirates.

Today's cable only game is on EI; also check today's Mediacenter link.

Go Cubs!!
Let's get a win and make that magic number a little smaller.
If the Cubs were an international soccer team they'd be called Scotland.

Something to make us feel better
With 5 games left, the Brewers magic number is 8.

I like our number more.

So a win tonight and Brewers win
Cubs magic number is 3 and Brewers is 7 with 5 games remaining.

8 means that the Brewers need 5 wins and 3 losses, or 4 wins and 4 losses or 3 wins and 5 losses

Club stats since June'07; 61-45 BEST in NL, against LHP starters; 14-14, and 21-10 in one run games, IT'S GOING TO HAPPEN!

Go Cubs!
Give us a little breather with a decisive win! Maybe some crooked numbers for the Brewers to stare at as they warm up to play and eventually lose! Magic number, take THAT!

The forecast for the stadium area:
Scattered light to moderate showers will continue to affect the eastern portion of the South Florida peninsula through 6 PM EDT. This activity will be most widespread across eastern Broward and northeastern Miami-Dade counties. Wind gusts to 30 mph and torrential downpours...with rainfall rates up to one quarter of an inch per hour...can be expected with the strongest showers as they move northwestward at 15 to 20 mph.

Tonight: Partly cloudy. Scattered showers and thunderstorms. Lows in the mid 70s. East winds 5 mph becoming northwest after midnight. Chance of rain 50 percent.

I assume in Florida they'd have one of them fancy field-drainage systems that people were discussing in the "batting uphill" thread - let's hope so.

Anyway, it sounds like they should be able to get something in tonight, though delays might be a possibility.

Some crooked numbers early for Los Cubbies, pleeeeeeeease!

Need 6 strong from Jason
If Jason can give them 3 runs or less, we should be alright. If he gets lit up, I'll have to get lit up so that I can sleep tonight. Go cards.

I live in Florida
tonights game from what I hear is not going to be a nice nite at the ballpark.  Its September and they are in south florida, think one of those scenes from Any Given Sunday when Jamie Fox can hardly see the other player's hopefully they miss it.

I live near Tampa, and that doesnt mean much but its rained here most of the day.  Hope the Cubbies keep it away and get a big one tonight.  Check the wind, if the wind is blowing from the south or the east there is a good chance there will be alot of rain invovled in this one.

Good post Al, short and to the point thats all that needed to be said.

How much it would cost me to get extra innings today for the rest of the season? I figure they won't charge a full half season for the 6 games left... but then again they might.
GREAT SUCCESS!!!

as far as I know
I can watch every game if I have dish, because I can get the Comcast Sports Network.

Extra Innings is... what, exactly?

by drewishdrewid on Sep 26, 2007 7:07 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Where do you live? In the Chicago market?
Extra Innings is the MLB pay package that delivers out-of-market games to subscribers of most (but not all) cable customers in America, and DirecTV Subscribers. Dish Network did not participate this season, when a new contract was hammered out between InDemand (the supplier) and MLB. DirecTV did sign up.

The various local channels are not offered to most satellite packages. If they are -- the games may be blacked out to protect this paid coverage.

I think most of us here would have switched to satellite if it allowed us to cherry-pick Comcast Sports Chicago. (Those of us OUTSIDE Chicago.)

For example, for tonight's game -- the carrier was FSN Florida. For the majority of the games this season, the Cubs/Comcast telecast was supplied. Tonight, it was not featured on Extra Innings. This coverage fills in the non-WGN games, about 60 to 70. So, I will see 140+ Cubs games -- losing some to Fox blackouts. Without this package, I'd only see 70-something games on WGN and the rest on other networks.

I urge you to double check before you install. Satellite operators can get their facts...."wrong," in an effort to get you to buy.

Here's what I buy from Time Warner Cable in SD:

http://indemand.com/sports/mlb/index.jsp

Be very, very sure of what you are buying. Don't want you to get tricked into thinking you have the channels you need. I don't trust Dish net reps to know what they are talking about.

If you want to chat more, ask Al for my E-Mail.

My take
this is the biggest game of the year. Can not let the Brewers get within one game.
Brewers will light up the Cards tonight with Thompson on the hill.
Lets get them Cubs, get the lead early on this rookie pitcher.
Get us into the 7th Jason!!

by Johnny Callison was a Cub on Sep 26, 2007 4:04 PM CDT   0 recs

Interesting thought....
....what does happen if we get rained out tonight? Play two tomorrow? What if they can't get in two tomorrow because of weather?

This could get interesting....let's hope the Cards can salvage some dignity and stomp the Brewers to get that magic number down to 3, regardless....

by Chadnudj on Sep 26, 2007 4:07 PM CDT   0 recs

They'd have to play two tomorrow.
If they can't get ANY baseball in over the next two days, the games would be postponed and played, if necessary, on Monday.

What a mess THAT would make.

Rain Delays @ Dolphin...
Boers and Bernstein mentioned that there have been 16 delays this year and only a couple rainouts in the last few years. The drainage system should allow us to get this game in.

by mrsmiff on Sep 26, 2007 4:49 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

OK if the Cubs are going to win it
This is the type of game they need to win.  Barone should be gone early.  You know the Brewers will do the same to Thompson.

I'm not sure
people comprehend just how bad the Cardinals are right now. That team is decimated; look at their lineup, and also the fact that their pitching is the same horrid mess it's been all season. They honestly have no chance against the Brewers in that park. But root for them tonight, and take solace in the fact that they are going to suck for many years to come.

by Matt Allison on Sep 26, 2007 5:04 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Well I guess you have to give La Russa
some credit for having that good of a record but the Cardinals are essentially what the Cubs were in 2005. They depended on a pitcher to carry their team and he got injured (you could make the case for two Cubs pitchers) and they really have only two players at best to carry that offense (Pujols and maybe Edmonds) (Lee and Ramirez)

More Cards injuries
Ryan Franklin (P)  STL  9/26/2007
Franklin has a tired arm, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports. After posting an ERA below 2.00 and a WHIP below 1.00 in each of the first four months, Franklin has fallen back to earth in the last two. Since the beginning of August, he's given up 27 hits and 16 runs in just 23 innings for a 6.26 ERA and 1.39 WHIP.

Russ Springer (P)  STL  9/26/2007
Springer was unavailable Tuesday with muscle spasms in his shoulder, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports. Springer is having the best year of his career, but he's been overworked. He reached a career-high in appearances for the third year in a row, and the 64 innings pitched is his most in over a decade.

Troy Percival (P)  STL  9/26/2007
Percival was unavailable Tuesday with a sore elbow, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports. The Cardinals may do the prudent thing and shut him down, as they may want him to be a key member of the bullpen again next year.

So basically the three decent setup guys in their bullpen are all questionable for today's game.  Fantastic!

In addition, Ankiel was out of the lineup last night because of a bruised foot.  Apparently the only reason Edmonds started last night was because Ankiel was out, so I doubt we see the two of them on the field together.  In addition LaRussa wants Eckstein to finish the year with a .300 average even if that means having him sit out.  Eckstein is at .307 so I believe he'll play tonight, but can we have the Iowa Cubs or any other Triple-A team minus the Cards Triple-A team play the Brewers tonight?  I like their chances better.  Some of the Card injuries have been freak accidents (Encarnacion), but at some point if more than half or your regulars are hurting, you have to wonder how much the training staff is to blame.
