Around SBN: Knicks Beat Lakers With Familiar Strategy

Open Thread: Cubs vs. Marlins, Thursday 9/27, 3:05 CT

As you all certainly remember, Steve Trachsel was the starting and winning pitcher in the 1998 wild card tiebreaker game at Wrigley Field. He allowed the Giants only one hit that day -- a single by Brent Mayne in the 7th, which, incidentally, broke up a no-hitter -- although he walked six, it was one of his best outings of that season.

Yes, I am well aware that was nine years ago. So all I can say is: Steve, here's hoping you've got one more great game in your almost 37-year-old body.

Amusement, since we all sorely need some at this point: Here's what could happen if there are ties in the NL East and West.

 Today's Starting Pitchers
Steve Trachsel
 S. Trachsel
Cubs
vs. Scott Olsen
 S. Olsen
Marlins
7-10 W-L 9-15
4.74 ERA 5.88
52 SO 129
74 BB 83
18 HR 29
vs. Fla -- vs. Cubs
One of the reasons I suspect Lou chose Trachsel for this start was his success against the Marlins last year, when he was with the Mets. In 2006, against many of the same players who are with Florida now, Trachsel was 3-0 with a 2.00 ERA in 18 innings pitched. Miguel Cabrera's the only current Marlin who's hit him hard (12-for-21, 5 doubles, 3 HR, .571/.654/1.238).

I'm sure you all know about Scott Olsen, who went to high school in the Chicago area (Crystal Lake South), grew up a Cubs fan, and was one of those in the crowd on Waveland during game six in 2003 (even though he was already pitching in the Marlins organization by then). He's had well-publicized problems this year, including a felony arrest when he tried to elude police after being stopped for DUI. He's pitched poorly all year, giving up at least four runs in each of his last six starts, 0-5 with a 9.47 ERA (and that'd be higher if all eight runs he gave up vs. the Mets last Friday hadn't been unearned), has not faced the Cubs since 2006, and hasn't faced anyone on the current Cubs roster more than eight times. Time to pound an opposing pitcher into submission.

UPDATE [2007-9-27 14:16:05 by Al]: I have just made a post in the ticket exchange section for anyone looking to buy or sell tickets for the Reds series. Click here.

I hesitate to even mention this, because it really shouldn't make any difference what TV channel the game is on. But I'm sure you all remember last year when the Cubs lost eighteen straight games televised by WGN. The broadcasters even joked about it on the air. Well, this year, early on, the club's record in WGN and CSN games was about the same. In recent weeks, though, the record in WGN-televised games has improved (now 39-28) and in CSN-televised games has gotten worse (now 34-38). Thank heavens, based on that, that the game's on WGN today (and so is Saturday's game). Also check today's Mediacenter link.

NL East and West
All we can worry about is ourselves, but if those situations play out and all five teams have to play tiebrakers that certainly would drain their pitching and mental capacities for NLDS.

Let's go Cubs, take this last one from the fish!

It's hard to maintain my outrage when I start giggling every time I see the midget wrestling picture.

I'm as critical as the next guy, but I just do not understand fans who only show up when the team is LOSING. I can't fathom what sadness goes on in their lives for them to do that.

But I'm tired of fathoming. Screw them.

We will separate the lights from the darks into different loads, dump them into the washing machine of hope, measure out the detergent of optimism and the fabric softner of dedication and put in on the hot water setting of victory!

Then we will wring out the unfaithful fluids before scrubbing out the dryer vent of hate and finishing our laundry!

tid=bits about olsen being a huge cubs fan.  young kid, facing his (ex)favorite team in a huge game, gotta think he might break down a bit.

maybe wishful thinking, but just seems interesting, given his odd track record.

Trachsel getting the start...
...reminds me of the scene from "Major League" where Lou Brown calls Rick Vaughn to the back of the bus and tells him that Eddie Harris will get the start against the Yankees.

I can just picture Trachsel in the locker room before the game, loading up with vaseline, slippery elm, Crisco...    not to mention sneaking a shot of Jobu's rum.

Maybe Dempster will rip his sleeves off and wear some Rick Vaughn glasses this weekend.

And of course, I've got my fingers crossed that at some point this weekend, Soriano will come up with the game on the line and say "F*** you, Jobu" and hit that curve ball over the fence for the Division Clincher!!!

Read some more quotes here and have a good laugh seeing which ones apply to this year's Cubs.

Oh, wait...that's Steve Trachsel and Scott Olsen, the starting pitchers for today's game.

Something's gotta give here. Olsen has only one win in his last 10 starts (and two no-decisions, both of which the Marlins won). And his ERA is pretty awful.

Catching Situation?
I know before last night's game Lou told reporters he mostly go with Kendall down the stretch as he has the proverbial "experience." Anyone think he's reconsidering that after last night? I figure Soto will get the start today against the lefty, but I'd also like to see him out there this weekend. Kendall still does a good job working counts and making contact, but he is something of a defensive liability.

here's a wild theory out there for you that Al i think came close to touching but didnt

Olsen = big time Cubs fan

Olsen = crazy

Olsen = frustrated with Marlins organization for continually disciplining him, etc

does anyone have Tim Donaghy's number to find out if Olsen's going to throw this game

he's already having an atrocious season... his numbers are so bad that a start in which he walks like 5 guys in the first 3 innings wouldn't show much....

just a thought

by DartmouthCubsFan on Sep 27, 2007 1:17 PM CDT reply actions

Olsen
With the way the strike zone has been called and the way we've been hacking in this series, Olsen may need to bounce his pitches in there to walk 5 guys....

"The editor who printed it is garbage."
That was the first article I've read about the Cubs in the Sun Times in a long time, maybe the second all season. Why bother. The "always-touchy Trachsel"? Give me a break. Look how many times words like "nightmare", "disaster", "stinker" appear in their Cubs coverage. I can deal with bias in the media in general, know how to see through it, almost expect it. But when it comes to sports, especially the Cubs, it just pisses me off.

by mrsmiff on Sep 27, 2007 2:09 PM CDT up reply actions

Why concentrate on Olsen?
The way the game went last night the starting pitcher got yanked really early, and the Cubs were treated to a parade of 8 pitchers.  That Marlins manager seemed desperate for a win.

Sometimes I think that when we have so many of our fans yelling and cheering in a visiting ballpark, the home team players play extra hard.  Dontrelle alluded to the fact that when he plays the Cubs in Florida, it always pumps him up more because of our fans in the stadium.

Correct
I didn't mean to insinuate that he had anything to do with the loss. I was talking more about his psyche headed into the post season. After being so dominate all year would he start to question his pitches if he begins to struggled down the stretch?

Marmol's psyche
I doubt that it'd affect him. After all, he's got some proven veterans that has been wrung thru the ringer around him - Demps (aka Dumps to some of you), Howry, Eyre, Wood. Plus I'm certain that Lou would talk to him before his psyche gets affected, if that were to happen.

Nawh, I think it'll just add fuel to his competitive fire to come out next time throwing harder. I think he knew it was just a bad day at the office and he'll shake it off.

Hmmmm
This morning I tried to check the schedule to see what would be on tonight but I didn't get the schedule either.  It's normally always available in the morning.  I was wondering if there might be a problem with my cable company (Cox).  I'm on the East Coast.  I wonder if this is some EI type issue.  I agree I want to see the Brewers plus I'm enjoying catching glimpses of the other divisions.

On the pre-game...
...Lou emphasized that he's putting his "best defensive" lineup on the field. I guess that accounts for Soto being given the start. I'd say Pie would be the best defensive option for centerfield, but it doesn't appear he's being considered an option to start games at this point in the season.

Trachsel
I was at the tie-breaker game in 1998 and felt nervous with Trachsel on the mound. Nine years later, I feel the same way, especially considering how poorly he's pitched recently and the fact that he hasn't pitched in a long time.

Uggla, Ramirez, Cabrera, Hermida
Are all awesome, but after them it's decent players.  Uggla strikes out a ton and only hits .250.  Hermida has only been hot for two-three months, Jacobs use to be batting cleanup, and they can't seem to get CF/RF solved.

Add onto that they have the 4th worst ERA in the Major Leagues... and they pitch in the national league without the DH... and you understand why they lose so often.

They are the Reds actually.  Look at the Team Stats:  http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/stats/byteam?cat=Overall&sort=837

Marlins: .268AVG, 1473H, 198HR, 729RBI, .336OBP
Reds:    .269AVG, 1473H, 202HR, 736RBI, .337OBP

wow, i love to see an AB like that from soriano
he swings at so many balls, that's what could happen all the time if he always had that approach, and eventually would see more pitches to hit out of the park.

Trachsel has not changed since 1994.
Leadoff man on base every inning.
Pitches the entire game from the stretch.
In trouble from start to finish.
Minimum 25 pitches in first inning; 100 through five innings.
Minimum 45 seconds between pitches.
High stress for fans every time.

The fact that he has been around as long as he has, and has even close to a .500 career record (12 games under) is amazing.  In the pre-expansion era, this guy would not have played AAA ball.  In the expansion era, a 13-year Major League career.  I understand the idea of acquiring a veteran for the stretch run, but every start Trachsel has made in a Cubs uniform, I swear, has taken an extra 15 minutes off my life.  Probably 30 if it was a meaningful game.

Jim Hendry
Love those late season trades.

Craig Monroe - completely worthless
Steve Trachsel - totally ineffective and cost us a few games
Jason Kendall - opens the floodgates for opposing base stealers.

Had Hendry done nothing, the Cubs would be in better shape.

Kendall
his bat has been extremely inconsistent. He has great stretches then horrid stretches. His defense is nothing great and he has thrown out two base runners all season. There have been games when this trade looks great, games when it looks absolutely horrid.
