We're gonna rock this town, rock it inside out
We're gonna rock this town, make 'm scream and shout
Let's rock, rock, rock man rock, rock
We're gonna rock till we pop, We're gonna roll till we drop
We're gonna rock this town, rock it inside out

UPDATE [2007-9-28 15:39:40 by Al]: Have arrived at my hotel in Cincinnati. Off to the GABP soon. GO CUBS!!!

Feel better now? Feel better after the Brewers looked just about as bad as the Cubs last night, losing 9-5? And wouldn't it be sweet if one of our all-time favorite Cubs, Greg Maddux, pitched his own team closer to the postseason -- and did the same for the Cubs, all on the same night?

We are going to rock Cincinnati this weekend -- tens of thousands of Cub fans, myself included, are headed toward the Queen City, with the hope, at last, of deliverance and redemption. That's why I'm opening the game thread early today -- heading out on the road shortly.

This lame attempt at humor by Chicago Tribune columnist Mary Schmich this morning has so much wrong with it I don't even know where to begin.

Meanwhile, Bruce Miles gives credit where credit's due -- to both Jim Hendry and Lou Piniella.

Just win, baby.

Dear Z: Nice game last Sunday. Do it again.

Z has righted the ship: 3-1, 2.13 in his last four starts. He's 11-4, 3.16 on the road this year. And he won't have to face either Adam Dunn or Ken Griffey Jr., both out for the rest of the season.

The Cubs have defeated Bronson Arroyo twice already this year, and beat him up pretty good at Wrigley Field eleven days ago, even though they had to come from behind that day to win in dramatic walkoff fashion. Mark DeRosa (6-for-11, a HR), Cliff Floyd (6-for-18, 2 HR) and Aramis Ramirez (7-for-25, a HR) are the Cubs who hit him best.

Today's game is cable-only in the Chicago and Cincinnati markets. Here is today's Mediacenter link.

Not the Brewers, Pal
C'mon, give it a break, that was the Braves, who for more than 40 years have been in Atlanta.  Yes, the Brewers get credit for their lone pennant in '82.  But go choke yourself on the 10 NL pennants the Cubs have won.  Enjoy watching the Cubs make their 14th playoff appearance next week .....

World Series Triva
Of all of the teams that have ever been in the World Series (thus, for example, the "New" Washington Senators/Texas Rangers does not count), what teams have gone the longest since their last appearance.   The longest is, sadly, pretty darn easy.  Its the Cubs.  1945.  But who has the next longest streak?    (It used to be 1959 and the White Sox.) See if you can figure it out without looking at a reference book.   Its really quite depressing.  I'll post the answer later if no one gets it.

by frustratedfan on Sep 28, 2007 12:39 PM CDT up reply actions

Good question
I'll guess:

The Pirates (last appearance, 1979)

Others that have gone a long time since their last WS appearance:

Brewers (1982)
Orioles (1983)
Royals (1985)

To think we've been wasting our time hoping for a championship when we really won it 2 years ago.

Honestly, I have no problems with a little bit of trash talk back and forth, but know your story if you plan on giving a history lesson.

Dear Dave-willie:
Who is willie? The farm animal you sleep with?  OK, I will stop with the Wisconsin jokes and get back to the question at hand...

Why would you call Cubs/Cub fans "perennial losers" when the Brewers have had many more losing seasons and a worse record than the Cubs over whatever time period you want to look at.

The fact that you want to cling to the performance of a franchise that fled your town for greener pastures is somewhat pathetic.  Why don't we all enjoy this fight to te finish and not get into asking one another to choke on things?  Both of our teams seem to be doing enough choking/gagging, but someone will end up on top by Sunday.

Using your same logic, Chicago won a World Series two years ago.  Just because the Seattle Pilots played in County Stadium for all those years doesn't give them the right to that 1957 World Series banner.

Think about the way this sets up...
...the Cubs, essentially, have Carlos Zambrano and Greg Maddux going to the mound for them tonight. That's pure baseball poetry.

I think this season is going to end pretty much how it's played out -- when the Cubs win, the Brewers win. And when the Cubs lose, the Brewers lose. But, when all is said and done, the Cubs win just a little bit more than the Brewers. And that will make the difference.

missing the point
I think everyone's missing the point of that article.  It's for fairweather fans that haven't been paying attention since the last time they were in the playoffs.  Obviously, everyone here is obsessed with the Cubs and it doesn't apply.  To us, it's pure fluff.  To Johnny come lately, it's a nice Cliff's notes version of the season to date.

Argue all you want about the value/reputation those types of fans bring to us, the diehards.  But the sad fact is they make up probably half of the "October fan base."

I AM SO PUMPED bout this weekend,  we could clinch tonite (not a prediction, just a hopefully, optimistic, option) or tomorrow (maybe most realistic) or sunday (would be most nervous if this is the case) or monday (I die of heart attack in fourth inning).

This is what being a cubs fan is all about: stressful games, guarded excitement, and the undying love of our team.

I am really tired of the folks that talk about us 'backing' in the division crown.  BS!! You play 162 like every other team, you win more than the teams in your division, you get rewarded by getting to play in october.  If the cubs won 32 games and won the division, Ill take it. we have won how many divsion in the last 60 years - ahh .. 3. Heck yea I will take #4 anyway i can get it (sunny side up, over easy, or burnt)

Should be a gr8 weekend to party!  Lets celebrate a division win and hopefully (please note guarded excitment here) throughout October!!

My stepdaughter hadn't really seen much baseball before (normally she'll be off playing in her playroom or watching the Disney Channel during ballgames). So her first question was "Why are they all running so much?"

She got bored with it pretty quick - she wanted to know when the Bears were playing next so she could watch that instead. (She goes around saying "Da Cubs" because she enjoyed "Da Bears" so much. A budding football fan -- I'm sure baseball will catch up to her.)

So funny.

My two year old daughter thinks all sports are the Cubs.  It can be an NBA game and she'll point to the TV and say "CUBS!"  She is learning though - she carries around a vacuum cleaner attachment like a baseball bat and yells "I Baseball!"

She is starting to understand the difference between football and baseball too.  All football is now "Cago Bears!"

Right now, she's crazy about the song "Go Cubs Go!" I've got it on my iPod and she's constantly asking me to play it.

How badly do you want to know?
I'd never hit someone with a camera - well, at least not one of mine!

Although I was sorely tempted to let a real jerk feel an Anton Bauer brick in the kneecap once - I was shooting some HS hockey for a local (pre-FSN) sports outfit, standing at the top level, working handheld*, and the pinhead was shoving me, not realizing that I'd be gone in a few minutes and he'd soon have that part of it it all to himself.  He lipped off as I left, thinking better of it, not feeling like having to explain my actions to a judge.  So instead, I gave a very accurate description of the jerk to the local cop on duty at the arena.

* I had a full size broadcast Betacam.  Roughly 25-30 pounds fully loaded, and it would likely have cracked his kneecap.  (Even a bruised kneecap hurts like hell - for days.)

By the time they got to chip cameras, even with a brick on the back, maybe 30.  Still, carry one around on your shoulder all day in 90+ degree heat and I predict you will be sore the next day.

That, of course, is not counting the hip pack with a couple wireless lav bodypacks, a stick mic, an extra reel of tape or two, and a spare Anton brick.  That gets your load up to 40-45 lbs. or so, easy.

And I don't have back problems.  Really over-aged knees from too much playground hoops in my misspent youth, yes, but my back's OK.

FWIW department
Cubs are playing tight, 3/20 RISP against Florida, but a change in venue, the realization that their pursuers are in worse shape.

This should relax the team. I suspect that the coaches are encouraging the 'chemistry' players to come forward and loosen up the team.  I did not like to hear Trachsel get negative before yesterday's game.

The umps also were so bad that they distracted the team with strikes and balls so inconsistent that it appeared to be a AAA game. The line drive by Cabrerra appeared to be on the other side of the line and then Soriano's call at 1B, et cetera.

Be glad we are not in NY's or AZ's circle. CO who is tremendously hot could sweep into the playoffs propelling SD into a division tie if they lose one game or win out if they sweep the Brewers.
In reality I just can't see the Brewers winning more than one game, SD is hot and know that one loss could also send them into horrible situation. Today Capuano pitches versus Maddux, Mad-dog I think will tease the Brewers into frustration.

Piniella and company knows they have to get a great performance from Zambrano and pop that balloon offensively.

Club stats since June'07; 61-46 TIED BEST in NL, against LHP starters; 14-14, and 21-10 in one run games, best in MLB, IT'S GOING TO HAPPEN!

This is part
of the fun of it.

But none of us knows what they "feel like", or how they'll do tonight, or if there is more or less pressure than AZ, BREW, CO, yadda yadda.

One would figure that a Reds team without Dunn and Griffey should, SHOULD be beatable by a team with a lineup featuring DLEE, Soriano,A-Ram, and company.

But it just didn't pan out like that in Florida.

Our pitchers have to just bring it BIG TIME, and it will give the offense a chance.

Florida and Joe Girardi
Frankly I am puzzled as to how the Florida team finished so poorly in the standings.   They looked like they should be even better this year then last year.  They didn't really lose anyone and the young guys were a year older.  I think it speaks volumes for Girardi's ability as a manager and the "disaster" which resulted from firing him.  The Marlins appear to only play well this year when motivated.  And they were clearly motivated against the Cubs.

Sorry but Joe burned out
3 of his top starters, Sanchez, Nolasco and Johnson.  All on the DL for most of this year.
Joe sucked handling pitchers, that's why he got fired.

FWIW department
Cubs are playing tight, 3/20 RISP against Florida, but a change in venue, the realization that their pursuers are in worse shape. YEt a win tonight regardless of what Milwaukee does clinches a playoff on Monday and any loss by Milwaukee assures the same.

Marlins Announcers
I suffered through the first two games on MLB.TV, but for the third I just couldn't stand them, and left work early to see the game on WGN.

I have heard almost every announcing team in the country, and most of them are quite professional.

However, when it comes to the Marlins announcers, I don't remember ever having to suffer through a more disrespectful, nasty, unprofessional, and pathetic bunch of low-life sports announcers.  I don't mind play-by-play announcers that are partial to their ballclubs, and cheer them on.  But the constant bad-mouthing of the Cubs, their fans, their history, all done with malice, was totally out-of-bounds.  It really made watching the game unbearable.

Announcers should respect the game of baseball, and respect every team's players and history.

Bruce Miles on Lou.
I agree with him 100% on Piniella's strenghths. Another one of Hendry's excellent moves this off-season. He has some weaknesses, though, that lower his grade to a B, IMHO.

Lou has made some questionable decisions with substitutions and sometimes bring pitchers like Dempster and Mármol when he doesn't need them. Save them for close games. (Dempster for saves if he is going to remain being a closer, which is another move questioned by others. Save Mármol to get out of holes. Don't bring him in to start the 4th, 5th  or 6th inning.)

His hotheaded moves with the batting order, his unwillingness to move Soriano down in the order when it could and should have been done (now it's too late this season), his inability to make the hitters take pitches, all make me give Lou a B instead of an A. But compared to the manager the Cubs had before and to a lot of managers in baseball (think of Ned Yost), that's a tremendous improvement. Lou or Clint Hurdle (Rockies) may be the Manager of the Year.

by Fraggin Judge on Sep 28, 2007 10:03 AM CDT reply actions

let me cut up the self-appointed judge here
Let me first say how can you judge any grade below an A that takes a team from last to first? The objective is first, that is the priority now I can say possibly an A- since the Cubs don't have the best record in the NL but they do have the second best since June 1st by 1 game to surging Phillies. Turnaround a team culture and atmosphere takes more than a day....you criteria is flawed....

Now every human has strengths and weaknesses so the weakness statement is assumed and thus immaterial.

OKAY his mistakes which all managers have over the course of 162 game schedule, the slam about pitching Marmol and Dempster to save them is ignorant to real life baseball, there is no saving players, players need to play to stay sharp in intervals that must be balanced. But making this criticism without specifics simply makes it an unsubstantiated innuendo and basic ignorant rant.

But the idea of some 'hotheaded' move in batting order shows me that it is you who is 'hotheaded' for Piniella has shown to be quite cool and balanced in his year here. His moves in batting order has had many reasons, either moving Theriot to the 8th spot to take pressure off him or moving Floyd and Ramirez and around to fine tune how a pitcher approaches or Floyd, DeRosa or now Kendall as the 8th hitter trying to work a pitcher before the 9th spot. There is no emotional move here only your rant.

AS FOR SORIANO you obviously have little understanding of athlete psychology. The Cubs placed him out of his comfort zone in the beginning of the year on top of being on a new team, on top of the pressure of performing with a big contract....that make him uncomfortable at the plate. Moving him to LF brought him back in the comfort zone, lead off hitting is his comfort and the few times he was not in that spot he 0-4er'd. So in the end that has turned out to be the best decision since Soriano has finally hit hitting groove....

Wait a minute.
Before we canonize Saint Lou, may I remind readers that I wrote he may be the NL Manager of the Year? I was only pointing out Lou is not perfect. Nobody is.

You do not have to agree but -to name one instance- it was Lou who made a botched double switch attempt recently. I'm not questioning his lineups as much as the substitutions. It's legitimate, for instance, to question why Soto was taken out to bring Floyd Thursday when everyone in the ballpark knew that a lefty was coming to pitch. I understand the move but recognize it was debatable. Moves like that one were made all season long. Check out my prior posts (and posts by others, too) for instances when Lou has made moves that cost the team a game.

Of course, in the interest of brevity I won't cite specifics from a long season to criticize Lou just as I can't to praise him for his right moves. As to the first, of course pitchers have to stay sharp, but why was Dempster pitching again on Thursday in a non save situation? He does not need to be sharp by pitching every day. And why was Mármol warming up in the fourth inning? What are the callups for?

And about Soriano not being able to lead off, sorry but I understand athletes' "psychology" and the guy can hit down in the order without affecting his psyche. Check out his numbers when he mainly hit 3rd and 5th with Texas in 2004 and 2005, and also ask Frank Robinson why, when he moved Soriano to # 3 in the lineup late last season (to increase his RBI's), he said Soriano is not a lead off hitter. It's not the same leading off in the AL than in the NL. In the AL, especially with the Yankees, Soriano had good hitters getting on base for him in the 8th and 9th spots. In the NL the 9th is usually an out (the pitcher). In the end, the most important factor, to me, is what is best for the team and not what Soriano's or any other player's "comfort zone" may be. That's why this is something to address for next year (because Lou decided not to handle it this year). It's too late this season.

Again, Lou is a great manager. I gave him a B. You gave him an A-. We were not too far off from each other. This reminds me of the kid who was reprimanded because he didn't get an A but came home with a very respectable B. I may be a low grader. Thus, I'll reserve the A's for managers like LaRussa and Bobby Cox. (And the B for Lou includes the achievement of taking the team from last to first in the division in one season. However, not all the credit is the manager's because the players are not the same. That is why that does not entitle Lou to an A, IMHO.)

However, I do not like your tone towards me. This is a board to discuss the Cubs. It's expected we will read things with which we disagree. I do not go out calling another person's opinion an "ignorant rant" just because I do not agree with their position. Your opinion is as valid as mine. Furthermore, I know I am not the only one thinking this way because I just repeated criticisms I have read here before by people who know what they are writing about. I believe I know enough baseball to be able to write about strategy. If you have a different view, fine. Write it. It's not an "innuendo", a "rant" or a "slam", and my opinion isn't either. It's just a different point of view.

This will be one of my last posts of the year. I stayed away from the game threads on purpose because of the hostile atmosphere. It is spreading to every thread now when the post is not a cheerful glorification of the team. Inevitably, someone will call it a "rant" or worse. Therefore, I will stay away from all threads to avoid the nastiness. I'll keep reading, though, to learn from others in the free marketplace of ideas and opinions.

leading off soriano clearly eclipses his stats at all other places in the order.  this is well known.

but also, look at the situational stats, for his career soriano is MUCH better with no runners on than he is with runners on base, hes more comforatable leading off, and plays better with no one on base.  these are unavoidable facts.  end this talk for once!

let the order move to Soriano.

If we want to increase Soriano's productivity, while at the same time leave him in the leadoff spot where he's most comfortable, I say we steal a page from LaGenius' play book and bat the pitcher 6th.  That way Soriano can be a leadoff cleanup hitter!!!

I am not sure if there are trolls here or not
BUT...anyone expressing significant change in the roster or coaching or DFA'ing this person or that because you have some kind blame idea is purely ignorant.

For one all the Cubs need is a good starting pitching game and defensive execusion. Against Tuesday the Cubs defense let Lilly down and he gave up 4 runs in one inning. Wednesday Marquis had his second poor outing in a row and the Cubs got down 5 runs by the 5th inning. In that game again there was a significant defensive miscue and the Marlins won. Yesterday for the third game in a row Trachsel gave up 5 runs to the 5th inning and the Cubs could not overcome it.

The umpires sucked and the balance fell against the Cubs, but all in all the Cubs also should have scored with all the opportunities.

What they need is a solid starting pitching performance...AKA stopper, and a few hits with RISP. Simply a win will put them over the top and all this crap of human nature will go into the sewer and be recycled.

To the Cubs advantage is that the odds are that there will be at least one play-in to the playoffs, possibly two.

Bonds will go to an American league team and play DH. That's about all he can do now with all of his joints falling apart from the steroids. The Cubs have no use for him...plus his salary isn't cheap and he's a clubhouse cancer. Other than that he'd be great.

Yeah,
My initial reaction was that he wouldn't ever play the outfield again either.  I was surprised to see it there as well, but it is actually from this article on USA Today.

Nonetheless, I think it's a bunch of crap, and yeah, the first thing that came to my head was "clubhouse cancer".  And selling out crowds at wrigley is not really something the cubs needs to worry about I don't think.

Report from Miller lastnight
Made the drive "up Nort" to see the game with my buddy, SD native and huge Pads fan.

Don't mean to play Cap'n Obvious here, but, long story short: Brewers fans are NOT happy. Been to a few games at Miller, always that their fans were among the most friendly and chill, but that wasn't the case lastnight. Plenty of Cubbie Blue in the stands, witnessed a handful of near-fights, was almost in one myself (with a guy wearing a Turnbow jersey... are you kidding me??). They are frustrated as hell, and rightly so.

Point being: A pennant race will get even the blood of the calmer set boiling, but this season may have planted the seeds for a real-live actual Cubs/Brewers rivalry. Who knows what will happen to the Blew Crew once Yost is out (the cooler heads among Brewer fans I chatted with agreed that it's an inevitability and are happy about it), but a couple more seasons of the two teams going 1-2, which seems very possible, could push this up near Cubs/Cards calibre, dontcha think?

(Side note: Had to chuckle at the Brewer fans heckling Barrett in the bullpen: "You messed up dude! They're in first! Way to go!")

True Cubs fans............
.........do not see the sux as rivals.

The Brewers, an opponent for 15-18 games annually, have the makings of a rival.

When we start facing the sux in the WS every year, THEN they will be our rivals.

I worked in Milwaukee for a year
back in the late 80s and went to many games at County Stadium - great place to watch a game, btw.  Back then, Milwaukee was in AL and going to a Brewers/White Sox game was an absolute hoot!  Tons of abuse being hurled everywhere, beer (and brats) flowing freely, lots of fights in and outside the park.  I kept my distance though and just watched in amusement.

Now, I give Cubs fans a little more credit than Sox fans, plus Miller Park has this depressing effect on atmosphere, so I don't envision a rivalry quite like that, but there's certainly potential (and history) to take it up a notch or two.

Having worked and lived in Racine Co for years
And going to both the old County Stadium and then the new Miller Park with the hordes of Cub fans who filled the park I can tell you that over time the rivalry will mirror the one between the Bears and Packers.

Wisconsin residents have an inferiority complex towards everything Illinois (and Minnesota up north and west) because Wisconsin is subjected to more money, industry and tourist influx from those greater metropolitan and State economic zones. They look at their identities far more emotionally than Chicago. In fact one of my favorite bar restaurants is close to Miller that still has Milwaukee Braves memories throughout its decore.

But a rivalry means that both sides have disappointments. My fear is Tony LaRussa ends up in Milwaukee with a better GM and he rides them like a pony express rider.

I have been in traffic in Illinois, WI, CO, CA, AZ
NY, IN, MI, OH, FL, TX even MO

Wisconsin relies on the money influx from Chicago and Minneapolis whether it is weekend or 2nd home or what not. They love the money, 2nd homes on lakes pour money into the school system at rates far above permanent residents, but what gets me is the attitude of the residents, they take the money but detest those who are giving it away.

Of course those who usually have the money have an attitude of superiority or lack of accountability due to being an anonymous visitor but Wisconsin loathes out of staters.

Little of both
Big group of guys in Cubbie jerseys were having a good time with every Braun error and Fattie flub. But a lot of the Blew Crew was trying to start stuff with the usual set of really tired, but nonetheless asinine jabs. Yuppies, $300 mil, 98 years, etc.

Look, having the obnoxious fan of the opposing team in your park sucks. Sure. If you want to be that guy, you're not going to the game to watch baseball, you're going to get a black eye, hope to land a couple punches, and get 5 innings in before you get tossed out of the park. (Check out the well-blogged history of this phenomenon as it exists between the Phillies and Mets. Pretty ridiculous.)

With that in mind, my buddy and I weren't about to start anything, but people knew who we were rooting for. When people around us talked some friendly smack, we were game to give it back. Had a few laughs with some Brewers fans, good time had by all.

But one of the arguments we got in, with the Turnbow Fan Club, got unfriendly in a hurry. After I picked apart his points one by one (no joke, one of his points was to defend Dusty... saying we unfairly "ran him out"... you can guess what he thought about Yost) the guy was actually yelling and tried to take it into "FIB" territory, which got the attention of the ushers.

What's kept this from being a true rivalry, in my mind, is the one-sidedness of it (Brewers fans hating Chicagoans in general way more than the other way around). There isn't enough history of the two teams being competitive with each other yet to be on par with Cubs/Cards, but with the added statehood allegiances I think it could get up there with a couple more close pennant races. All I'm saying is that lastnight it was pretty damn intense and I could see it staying that way.

That behavior bothers me
I feel like it's one thing to show up and root for the Padres and remain anonymous, but to show up in Cubs gear and hoot AGAINST the Brewers, to me, is low class.

By all means people should go, enjoy themselves and root for the Pads, but putting on Cubbie gear is just sad.

Some bozo wore Brewers gear to a cubs/dodgers game I went to and I said the same thing to him.

by SouthsideCub on Sep 28, 2007 12:16 PM CDT up reply actions

re: That behavior bothers me
I respectfully disagree with you, to a certain extent at least. I don't think there's anything wrong with going to Miller Park to root against the Brewers -- especially at this point in the season.

Whether doing so is "low class" depends on how you do it. If you paint your face blue and white and cover yourself head and toe in Cubs gear and bring an obnoxious sign and spend the whole game yelling, "Brewers suck!!!" and "Prince Fielder is a fat idiot!!!", well, yeah, that's low class.

But if you doff your Cubs hat and sit respectfully in your seat and cheer when the Padres score (as they shall often tonight) and groan when the Brewers hit their usual two to three solo home runs, well, there's nothing low class about it. You're baseball fan. You're supporting your team -- respectfully. That's kinda what the whole sport is about.

No it isn't
I run across this all the time out here in LA. Whenever the Cubs are in town to play the Dodgers, the local Cardinals, Reds, Brewers fans inevitably show up - not to support the Dodgers but to root against the Cubs. Some of my most bizarre moments at Dodgers stadium have come from interacting with those idiots.

I see no reason why Cubs fans can't go to Miller park and root against the Brewers, especially when the playoffs are concerned. If the Brewers fans don't like it, tough tittie.

2 kinds of rivals
To me there are really two types of rivals.  Those based on straight competition, and those based on history/overlapping fan bases.

The Cubs and Brewers will have an excellent rivalry as long as both are near the top of the division, just as we perceived a Cub Astros rivalry a few years ago.  I doubt it will last beyond that though.

The Cubs Cards rivalry is really based in central ILL, where towns are evenly split between the two teams.

I for one like the Brewers, and I am really wishing that they could have been in this kind of a race a year ago when I could have cheered for them.

I grew up
just outside of champaign.  Our town is very into two sports, baseball and Illini basketball.  During the summer it seems like you drive down the street and there is one house with a cards flag out front and next door is a cubs flag.  You trash talk your neighbors every morning.  You trash talk the cashier at the store.  You trash talk everybody who is wearing the other team, has the other team's logo on their car, house, clothes, anything.  It is vicious all the time.  And that won't ever happen with the brewers.  I think the games can be fun, but it won't ever be part of the culture, at least around here.

Quite possibly the biggest start of Z's career.  In 2003 he was clearly behind Prior and Wood in terms of leadership.  Tonight, he must step up.  Frankly, if he can't handle the pressure and pitch well today, I am going to start getting real nervouse about the the $$$ we gave him.

I'm not superstitious....just a little stitious.

by hawkeyenation on Sep 28, 2007 1:32 PM CDT up reply actions

A few suggestions...
  • Theriot needs a few days off. Right now he's tired. He's getting his bat under the ball and hitting lots of pop-ups. He's not of much use right now and resting him for a few extra days may see him return back to form for the playoffs. I hate to say this, but Cedeno should start tonight and, if the Cubs clinch, the rest of the regular season games, giving Theriot several days off to get himself back in order.
  • I like the idea of starting one or two lefties against a lefty starter. If it's Jacque, fine. Even Floyd... but I'd prefer that the lefty be in the middle of the order, not down at #8. Break up things a bit, especially early on, so the lefty starter can't just pound away at one side of the strike zone.
  • Soto has clearly been scouted and his weakness is low and away. I'd still rather have him in the line-up to combat the Reds running game (Norris Hopper).
DmL

by dmlichte on Sep 28, 2007 1:10 PM CDT reply actions

Hopper -
I still can't believe that guy can run like he does.  He wears his trousers so long they drag on the field behind and under his spikes.

by N Oakley on Sep 28, 2007 1:26 PM CDT up reply actions

actually DML Soto's hot zone says
His weakness is inside middle and low....

The Nine quadrants:

Inside High .667
Inside middle .167
Inside low .000

Middle high .400
Middle middle .333
Middle low 1.000

Outside high .750
Outside middle .386
Outside low .667

As for Theriot, I think he has worn down since early September, his bat is slow, his back is sore, I think play Cedeno tonight and clinch, and then give Fontenot the remainder at SS and give him some experience.

Deliverance and Redemption?
What sort of redemption can be earned this weekend in Cincinnati?

If the Cubs manage to sweep, they end the regular season with 86 wins (and it's not like they've beat up on the Reds this year).

The Cubs have a losing record this year against every potential NL playoff team (except Colorado, which is a different team of late).

Have Cubs fans reduced themselves to looking at an 86-win, division title* as redemption?

Your standards are low. Even for Cubs fans.

(* Not that I'm counting on 86-wins or a division title happening.)

I continue to chuckle
at the comments from these posters who think the Cubs are involved in gymnastics or figure skating.  For those of you into the style of winning, I suggest you stick to these sports, where perfection is the criteria for winning.  Baseball is a game of failure/imperfection.  The best hitters make outs 67-70% of the time.

Let's be clear:  The Cubs do not have to impress the Russian and French judges to get the highest scores for showmanship.  All the Cubs have to do is get to the post-season.  It is pretty simple.  No style points.  Just win.

Ideal situation
Cubs win and Brewers lose tonight. Rest Lilly tomorrow and start him in game 1 Tuesday the 3rd, Zambrano Wednesday the 4th and Hill Friday the 6th.

For game 4 if necessary, skip Marquis copletely and go with Lilly on 3 days rest and if a game 5 is necessary on the 9th, you can go with Zambrano on 4 day's rest.

Marquis doesn't even need to be on the 1st series playoff roster.

 That is the ideal situation.

Lilly pitched well on 3 days rest....
....last week.

4 days off for Zambrano is no big deal.

The Cardinals didn't pitch Marquis at all last PS and it worked out Ok for them.

Marquis' has been brutal lately and there's no need for him 5 game series, 7 maybe but not 5 if the "ideal" scenario of the Cubs clinching tonight turns into reality.

Get to the playoffs and it's anyones game. In the more recent history it has happened more then not that a lower seed wins it all. The Cubs are the type of team that if it get hot it could roll right through the playoffs and win it all.

Unlike 2003 were the Cubs had no reasonable bull pen help. The 2007 version does have some good pen help. It has a decent 1, 2 in Lilly and Z. The offense, if it's hot, is top shelf.

But lets take care and end the drama that is the central.

Win today, win tomorrow.

You know...

...if there were even a modicum of something remotely funny or interesting I would not have even bothered commenting.

I was not so offended by the anti-Cub fan stance (yeah, whatever, I started rooting for 'em in 1970...I get it) as I was offended by its lack of humor, originality, etc.

I mean, did the guy just set it up hoping to garner a couple of bucks off of the Google ads for Harry Caray ringtones?

TV Coverage question
I just read this on yahoo sports:

"...TBS will have exclusive coverage of all four division series, then move on to broadcast the NL championship series. Next season, the network will launch a "Game of the Week" on Sunday afternoons in addition to its playoff coverage...."

Does this really mean that there is NO free TV for the division series this year? What about mlbtv.com? I know that a lot of Americans have cable tv, but my recollection (from reading some statistics a while back) is that cable isn't even in 50% of American homes (it's not in mine, I know).

Over the years, it seems that MLB (owners and players) has become less interested in building a young, middle class fan base and more interested in skyboxes, exclusive cable/satelite TV packages, high salaries (and expensive seats), and scheduling playoff games at 9 p.m. eastern time.

Sorry to sound like a curmudgeon-- I'm only 34 years old-- but this seems like bad business in the longview.

60%
Actually... cable penetration is at about 58.8% of homes and about 90% of all homes in t he US are able to get cable TV. There are still some parts of the US that can't even get cable TV. ... BUT yes, I agree that if I were someone who did not have cable I would be annoyed too that I couldn't watch my dear Cubbies.

Why don't you call the cable company and get cable for a month and then shut it off again? :)

TV is a business
And quite a profitable one, I might add.

Your average station easily runs double-digit profit margins.  And we're not talking 11%, either.

As for no free TV, the Turner folks (and their parent, TimeWarner) don't care.  They clearly see the potential viewership they already have on cable and satellite as sufficient - even to the point of diminishing return.

Sad but true.

More good news
DBacks up on the surging Rockies who are scary, 3-0.

I'm personally rooting for DBacks,Cubs,Mets and Padres make the playoffs.

THen Cubs would play the DBacks and I could go to the games when there here in Phoenix and the Phillies and Rockies are scary hot right now.

Cubs would have a better chance of  making it to the World Series if those 4 teams make it in to the playoffs.

Why do these Reds announcers
seem so bitter to me?

Is it just me or are they acting like they (the Reds) are the team in the play-off hunt and the Cubs are just a high payroll team lucky to be where they are?

They seem to be so bitter about all the Cub fans who have filled their ballpark this weekend, instead of complementing the loyalty of the fans for making the trip to their lousy city.  I just don't get it.

Oh well... Go Cubs!!  Let's add on!!

Z's Big Game
I know he makes you crazy sometimes, but how do you not love Z? He stepped up big time, at a time when he absolutely had to do it! I'm so proud of the kid today, and I love that a passionate, nutty unique character is leading us into the post-season.  I am forced to watch a lot of Dodgers games out here, and the contrast between Big Z and Jeff Kent is why we should be so happy to have him and the rest of this team to root for this year.  I want to see the Cubs win a ring, but if I have the choice, I want them to win it passionately, not like they're carrying a briefcase out to the plate.  I get enough of that in my daily life.

Take us home bullpen!

I think he's got one series in the postseason
and that's it. Froemming lives in Milwaukee, so I'm sure having him work in this series was baseball's way of tipping its cap to him. Maybe that call at first was a make-good!

Bruce Froemming: Screwing over Chicago baseball teams for 37 years. I cannot believe that a guy I saw umpiring a game on TV in 1972 still is working. Not for long, thankfully.

When he retires, do I have to change my user name?

Feels great to get a win again...I was pretty rattled through the Marlins series.  Great defense, clutch hitting, and a relatively stress-free 9th from Dempster.  Plenty of reason to celebrate--and hopefully the Padres can give us more!

Nearly a 20-game improvement from last year.

This is what $105MM for 2007 can buy, plus a manager like Lou, to turn the culture of losing around.

From worst to first!
Still,

I'm going to keep myself calm for now. I've seen too many playoff meltdowns over the years (1984, 1989, 1998, 2003) to get excited about the playoffs. We're two series wins away.

by danimal15 on Sep 28, 2007 10:09 PM CDT reply actions

Amen,
Brother. There's a way to go. This is great -- worst to first, but there are 11 wins still to capture.

As I stated on the "non-neg" thread, in April and May -- WGN kept playing that "Lou" promo -- with clips from his press conference -- "We're Gonna Win Here." said Lou..

But the team kept losing, losing, losing. I said, yeah, yeah, yeah.

I could not imagine tonight's clubhouse scene back then. In Mesa, I thought it was possible. But things went bad. But you cannot deny the team has the best record in the NL since June.

The promo was right -- Lou didn't lie. The promo was just a few months early.

Boy, there's work to be done. The young'uns should enjoy -- but this is ONE step. An means to a bigger end.

I don't want a "Central Division Champion" T-Shirt. I want a "World Series Champion" shirt. That's the only one I will buy. Everything else -- isn't enough.

Bring out the rosary beads....
