Open Thread: Cubs vs. Dodgers, Monday 9/3, 3:05 CT

In this wacky year where, with four weeks to go in the season, ten NL teams are over .500 and within 6.5 games of a playoff spot, the Dodgers, who sit four games behind both the NL West and NL Wild Card leaders, actually have a record a half-game better than the division-leading Cubs.

Doesn't matter to the Cubs, right? Just get in.

Leftover note from the Astros series: I happened across pencefan.com, a Hunter Pence fansite, this morning. The author, a fan of Pence and the Astros, originally set it up under the domain name HunterPence.com:

HunterPence.com will become a fan-site for everything anything you want to know about Hunter Pence. This site is run and developed by a life-long fan of the Houston Astros.. It has no affiliation with the Houston Astros organization or is it endorsed by Hunter Pence himself. It is just a Fan-Site, and as a fan-site it will depend on the fans to make it more then a speed bump on the Internet highway.
Apparently Pence and his lawyers didn't like that:
I would like to say I am disappointed in the actions of Hunter Pence’s representatives in the last few months that have threatened legal action over the use of HunterPence.com as a fan site. Claiming that I registered the domain name in bad faith and meant to use it to extort or exploit Hunter Pence in some way. This site was setup as a fan site in general; it has never had any profitability and would never have had anything of the kind. With this said I will be handing over the domain name HunterPence.com in extreme protest to the representatives who have forced their hand over a simple fan website for a player in question. This being simply said if I was contacted in a proper way and asked by Pence or a representative that he wanted the domain name for personal use, I would have handed it over ASAP. At this point in time with what has been said and threatened, I have to clear my own name because I feel this whole event has been a defamation of my own character. So now I have to revaluate my own interest in running a fan website for Hunter Pence, if this is how I might continue to be treated down the road.
Why do people have to do this? I am well aware of what intellectual property rights are, and that some people are trying to extort money from others by registering domain names. But that clearly wasn't the case here. Why threaten legal action when a simple request would have accomplished the same thing? I just don't understand this at all.

Enough. Go Astros -- for the next three days, anyway.

vs. LA -- vs. Cubs
Much has happened since the Cubs last played the Dodgers in Los Angeles in late May, and lost two of three. They finished that series four games under .500 and five games out of first place. The only game they won was won by Z, who allowed eight hits and two runs in 7.2 IP, with eight strikeouts. It would be nice, Z, if you could replicate that today. He usually throws well vs. LA -- 2-1, 1.23 in five lifetime starts -- and not a single player on the Dodgers' current roster has ever homered off him.

The Yahoo preview of this game contains the following gem about Esteban Loaiza:

He is 2-2 with a 3.94 ERA in seven career starts against the Dodgers, last facing them May 13, 2005 with Washington.
I puzzled over that one for a while, until I realized that May 13, 2005 game was thrown by Loaiza against the Cubs, not the Dodgers. The Cubs won it off the Nats' bullpen after Loaiza threw seven decent innings. It was until this year the only game the Cubs had ever won in Washington since the Expos moved there. The Cubs beat Loaiza on June 29, 2003 and July 2, 2004, when he was a member of the White Sox, and he beat the Cubs as a White Sock on June 27, 2004, and on September 29, 1996, when he was a Pittsburgh Pirate (and have a look at some of the riffraff that played for the Cubs that day). None of those games is relevant to today's Loaiza. He threw well in two starts for the A's (both against Toronto; those are the stats in the pitcher box above) before the Dodgers picked him up last week. Cliff Floyd (9-for-26, .346..370/.577, 1 HR) and Aramis Ramirez (4-for-7, a double, two walks) are the only current Cubs who have had any sort of success vs. Loaiza.

Today's game is once again on WGN. Incidentally, Wednesday night's game is being picked up by ESPN. For other games today check out the Mediacenter.

I hope we don't let this turn into
another "Sheets moment." Loaiza seems to move around (team-wise) about as often as any player in the league. Isn't this the same guy who got a DUI for driving 120 MPH while on the DL in 2006? I like a hard-driving baseball player, but I think they are suppose to do it between the white lines on the field, not the pavement...but I digress, The Dodgers are picking up the full $8 million on his contract for this year and next. Let's make them really regret that move by hitting him early and often. Don't let this guy get comfortable out there AND let's give Z some run support. Something he did not get in August. Go CUBS!!!
Prince Fielder...he is neither.

I seem to remember
that the games the Cubs lost out in LA this year were very winnable, with good pitching and some bad breaks (perhaps errors or basrunning gaffes). The Dodgers did not look very threatening, despite their better record.

Game's on NASN here in Europe. Hope we get the WGN feed.

Back in May
the Dodgers were playing good BB and the Cubs poor BB.

Now, the Cubs are playing good BB and the Dodgers poor.

The Dodgers are 11-6 in their last 17
We are 10-7 in our last 17.  I would say the teams are very equal and I hope payback is coming, but LA is not playing poor baseball.

August bad for Dodgers
They were effectively booted out of contention in the NL West after a six game losing streak was followed by a four game losing streak.

True, they are not in the lame Central Div, but they were in first place when the Cubs played them in May and played .551 in the first half of the season.  Now, they are in third and are playing .468 ball, so clearly they are not playing as well as they did back in May when the Cubs had great opportunity to take all three games in the series but fumbled their chances, as we all painfully know.

Barring a Zambrano emotional breakdown, I say we win this afternoon!

Eyre was still in the "awful" stage
He gave up the game tying HR in the 8th to a PH in a 1-0 game. Then a HBP in the 11th by Guzman lost it, and the Cubs fell to 4 under .500.

Al, to link to that site - sister site and all - is degrading to BCB.

One of their 5 most recent diaries is:

I wouldn't call it degrading to BCB though, the guys who run the site obviously love the dodgers, it's not their fault their fans are apathetic at best.

I was at the Z WIN in LA
in my annual LA/CUBS game.

He was dominant until the 8th.

So funny watching the lackadaisical fans!

Beach balls and waves. Not much baseball knowledge/interest.

Loaiza is a very mercurial pitcher. We need the crappy one today.

If his sinker doesn't sink, we'll eat him up alive.

As you see so few comments
on the Dodger website, you can see why I can't stand the LA teams. Did you notice that some of the threads had NO comments? How sad, how very sad. I will always be loyal to my Cubs. It is painful to go to games for any team out here (though it was great to go to the final two games of the first Bulls championship as Bulls fans took over the old Forum!).

Well Eman...
all I can say is you can play golf here 12 months a year. That makes up for a lot of sins about the people. As long as you stay off the freeways, this is a very live-able place. Besides, when you go to the gym to work out, it is like an in person National Enquirer, that is kind of fun too. Keeps you motivated.

Pence Isn't An Anomaly....
...my buddy runs a Padres Fan website, and MLB went after him earlier this year. It's a small site that's populated that doesn't get a huge amount of hits and is really for him and his friends that are Padres fans. Here's a link from his site to the cease and desist letter he was sent by MLB:

http://www.padrefans.com/news/Cease_and_Desist.pdf

In the end, the site's still up, but he had to radically change the make-up of it. He had a link to sell Padres tickets on his site, and they accused him of pirating it. What was ironic is that he had to apply for permission to do it and got it, but MLB's right hand wasn't talking to the left hand.

Here's a link to his forums. MLB is also apparently going after MySpace pages as well.

On The Dodgers......
...don't judge the team by its fans. They've got some very good young players, but they can't figured out if they want to go young or play the vets with the post-season in mind. Matt Kemop is a stud and on fire right now, and Andre Ethier, James Loney and Russell Martin will be around for a long time. Jeff Kent is ageless, but Furcal's had a slightly down year. Juan Pierre is having a typical Pierre year, meaning they're griping that he's really not a lead off guy. Nomar, well, he's on the DL (again). He tries, he's a good guy, but the deterioration has really set in. Sad to see, and they're on the hook for next year too. They're going to use a rookie, Andy LaRoche, at third today, their 8th 3rd baseman (!) this year. LaRoche is supposed to be in the Kemp/Loney mold of hot young player.

Blame this season squarely on Ned Colletti. Rather than trade a couple of the young studs for Texeira, he held on to all of them and now is forced to bring in guys like David Wells, Shea Hillenbrand, Scott Proctor and Loaiza. When I was in San Francisco, I sat next to Chuck Cottier for a little while. He's the former Cub coach/Mariner manager who is now a Dodger scout. He said all the internal advice was to bring in Texeira at any cost but Colletti wouldn't do it. There have been times this year when the Dodgers have fielded an all shortstop infield- Nomar at 1st, Ramon Martinez at 2nd, Furcal and Wilson Betemit at 3rd (since traded for Proctor). Nomar was moved to 3rd to make way for Loney, but now of course Nomar's on the shelf.

If the Cubs take 3 of 4 here the Dodgers' season is over. While this series won't make or make the Cubs' year just yet, the Dodgers have it all on the line. The Cubs should treat it the same way to be safe.

Do NOT agree! Oh yeah -
bring in Texiera when you have Schmidt sitting in his lounger for 3/44Mill.!

And he signed Juan Pierre for what? 5 years?!

He blew his WAD, beerman, in the Winter. No way he was gonna pop for Texiera. Besides, they have a strong farm system.

And, I am sorry, but I am judging the fans on what I see there, in person - and by many current and ex-LA residents who agree with me. Just my opinion.

It is SEPTEMBER, and we're STILL IN IT! YES!

by TheEman on Sep 3, 2007 11:58 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

well...
...forgot about Schmidt. THAT was a boner and squarely on Ned. However, the money was purportedly there to bring in Texeira. Owner McCourt said so publicly (speaking in general terms at the time about getting mid-season help) and Cottier said money wasn't the issue, either. It was all Ned not wanting to part with Loney and Kemp.

Face it - Coletti
was burned already.

Not Cottier's money, and I've not seen anything really specific with Dodger's owner stating that "We're gonna write a blank check."

He may have intimated, but what was discussed w/Coletti may be something else.

Especially with the Schmidt and Pierre moves in the off-season.

Attendance at Dodger Stadium
is 2nd highest in baseball. Since 2001 they have not averaged less than 37,000 and it's currently at 47,000.

While the fans will never attain the fanaticism of Chicago teams, it's probably more to do with the availability of alternative activities that are open to them.

I agree that
the Dodgers are coming in as desperate as a dog left starving at Michael Vlck's compound. Falling behind on this team won't be a good option as they have a great bullpen in the 8th & 9th inning. Let's score early & often and mentally take them out of the race.

Big Game...Z against Loaiza
Tomorrow is the LAD's ace in Penny and Thursday is the number 2 in Lowe.

Cubs will need for their big three veterans to step up and pitch more than quality starts to close out what could be a big 10-game homestand.

Three of four is important.

Since the 4-game losing streak at Houston
Cubs are 2-2, 1-2, 2-1, 2-1, 1-2, 2-1, 2-1...

Winning four series, losing two and splitting one...12-10....since the series at the end of July where they split with Philadephia Cubs are 13-16 with that four game losing streak.

Winning this September series would put them at 16-17 and yet taking the lead in the division

This game has huge implications
simply because of Z's recent experience. No more we'll get em next time. Now is the time. If Carlos finally steps up, we're in great shape because he's the rising tide that lifts all boats.

However, if he chokes, it sends a messgae to the team that he can't be counted on. That means everyone tightens up.

I don't get it.
In the NFL they have some kind of accountability for their officials... the head official reviews every call after every game and goes over the film with the other officials, and the league's head official answers questions from the press.

This is as bad a year of umpiring as we've seen in a while, and yet the league does nothing.  Why can't they have some kind of accountability/review process for umps who clearly can't tell a ball from a strike, or for umps who try to make themselves the show instead of letting the players do their thing?

Z's move was no confidence in Quade
I don't think Z going through that stop sign was a mistake on Z's part.  I think It was him having absolutely no confidence in Mike Quade to make a good call.   Z has watched him make so many bad calls most often erring on the conservative side.

I don't think Quade is back next season and I think it was decided before that play.

It was a BS Single.

Z did the right thing there, he just got unlucky.

Strugling pitcher who is trying to find the strike zone against the opposing pitcher, he should be throwing strikes.

Loaiza just got lucky and punched it through a hole in the infield.

So calm down and root for the Cubs to get some runs and stop this nonsense about pulling Z for the Month.

I agree that the walks

No doubt Z had a major case of guilt after his bonehead play in the bottom of the inning. Maybe he will settle down now and give us 2-3 solid inning and let us get back in this game now. Lou could stand to make an example of Z
The shit he's pulled today is absolute horsecrap. That is a solid inning of absolutely brain-dead baseball. Maybe yanking his ass in the middle of the inning, amidst the parade of walks, would send a nice, loud wakeup call to Zambrano.

Right now, he's a Venezuelan version of Kyle Farnsworth. Million dollar arm with a ten cent brain.

The other reason Z has been beat up lately
is that I think the NL has figured out that they just have to take their time with Z.  He only throws strikes 50% of the time and he's always trying to strike everyone out.  His pitch count runs high fast and you can get into the pen.

I also think he gets frustrated because many of these guys won't chase his out pitches.

He needs to start throwing more strikes.

A quick grab bag of Z bitching.
I hope all the Big Z apologists around here are soaking all this in. Is it too much to ask our "ace" to throw one decent game in the final two months when we're in it?

It's not enough that he's an overpaid choke artist, but he also has to show us again what a class act he is as he walks off the field. Just walk back to the dugout like a professional.

If somehow we end up in the playoffs, I am absolutely petrified of what will happen if we send this headcase to the mound once or twice in a series. He's never shown he can win in pressure situations. Excuses were made all year for him about the contract, and now that he 's out of excuses he's been terrible. And I hope someone reminds him of how he popped off about winning the Cy Young award.

We should have unloaded him when we had the chance.

I said it earlier and I'll say it again
If we make it to the playoffs, IF, we will basically be down 1-0 in the series before it begins, there is nothing to make me believe that Zambrano can get his act together to win a big game in the playoffs, hell he can't even win on opening day because he's so excited for whatever reason, he will be going up against a peavy/webb/glavine, aces that no what their doing and don't let one little thing bother them the whole rest of the game, Zambrano's behavior today was pathetic and we should demand much more out of someone who is getting paid 90 MILLION to win big games for us

One, I don't think the Cubs are done just yet. This offense has shown a lot lately.

Two, I also worry that this could be a turning point game like the infamous Barrett/Oswalt game in '04. Granted, we're not playing a division rival here, but ...

Three, thank God for Hunter Pence.

Welcome, Big Z haters
I, for one, STILL would start him over everyone else we got in a must-win game. He's one of MLB's best when his head's in it, and today, after his baserunning blunder, he lost his head. I can't explain why he's such an emotional guy, and you can't either - but I'm certain that booing and cat calls are not going to remedy the problem.

Go ahead, fire back at me, I can take it.

Now, when you say you'd start him over anyone
else in a big game, does that mean anyone else on the cubs or anyone in the league, either way I would still start lilly or marquis over him in a big game, and I'd still take just about any other ace in the league to start over him in a BIG game, carlos can't take the pressure, he's never won a big game in his career, so what makes you think that he will win one when he has proven time and time again that he folds under pressure

Z's stuff won't show up in a big game
because he can't handle the pressure, when the pressures off he's as dominating as anyone in the league, but when the big games come up his stuff isn't there, he's not consistent enough, lilly and marquis have been very consistent all year long and they don't let pressure situations get to them the way z does

He killed two big scoring opportunities and until this past wee wasn't driving runs in the way we expect him to. And the Cubs pay him LOTS of money.

Just saying, Z deserves some rope. He's been awesome when we've needed him to be this year, and he'll bounce back.

D-Lee does not deserve the same
Lee hit the ball in the wrong place twice in a row. Five feet to the right, and he's got two singles. He didn't do anything laudable, but he didn't make mental mistakes.

Z ran through a stop sign, walked five guys in two innings and (arguably) screwed up again when he tried to barehand the bouncer up the middle.

Z fell apart. Lee just didn't come through. BIG difference.

AND Z has been terrible for a month.

Yep, he fell apart and lost his head
And I'm not happy about it. I just think it's premature to write him off. We need him.

No reason to fire back - you're just about right.

So instead of looking at this as a missed opportunity to gain ground, I look at it as proof this is the Cubs' year. As bad as they looked today, they're still in the same place they were this morning.

I figured
with that HR yesterday and his 3 RBI that Derrek Lee was out of his funk, but today he has been a slump-tastic rally killer. Two double plays in one game? That was as bad as Soriano's 3 K's against the Brewers during the week.

Listen, if we are going to score 9 unanswered runs against anyone, it will be recently-released Esteban Loiza. It is only the 6th, and if we can get this cast away on the ropes, maybe we can make something happen. Or maybe we can score 7 and make it respectable. Either way we are still leading the division and it's September 3rd.

Someone else had mentioned that maybe his homework assignment over the winter should be to learn how to catch a ball.

'Bad' doesn't begin to describe it
Zambrano ran through a stop sign in the second inning and got thrown out at home. Of course, in the next inning, he melted down. Three walks, a two-out, two-RBI single by the pitcher.

Not exactly the "ace" performance Cubs fans were expecting.

So much for that, but Z is going to have to man up in a hurry.

he's been pathetic
for the last month or so. he certainly isnt showing he deserves that fat contract

Good stuff in the 1st three innings
Then in the bottom of the third, Zambrano ingored Quade's base running call to stay at third and head home.  Zambrano was called out on a play that wasn't even close.  If Zambrano stays, 0 out, runners second and third with Theriot, Lee, and Ramirez up.  We only got one run from a Theriot single and then Lee got into a double play.

Besides the fact that we could have scored 3 or 4 runs (min) that inning, I'm sure the fact that Zambrano was horribly wrong played into his mind.  That and the fact that he ran all the way from 1st to home on one play and then had to pitch within three of four minutes of that happening.  Z didn't have stuff going into the fourth inning, his confidence was down, train wreck ensues.

yup
he doesn't handle adversity well at all.

You might want to label Z's effort
"a bull in a China shop" for both his base running and his pitching command today. Not pretty.
Prince Fielder...he is neither.

Just back from the game...
Just wasn't "fun" to watch my guys get pasted anymore.

So - I left.

Carlos Zambrano needs a Latino psychologist. This is not a glib joke. I mean this in all seriousness.

It is this simple.

Not only did he blatantly run through a clear "STOP" from Quade, which would have given the team ANOTHER run, he brings all of his anger and failure out to the mound the next inning when he STILL had the lead!

He walks two guys with two outs and no one on! Carlos just melts under adversity. As the "ace" he needs to learn NOW how to overcome this and any coping methods are not working.

And -  excuse the language - but fucking WILL OH-MAN!

I was SO disgusted that they called this crap ass pitcher back! UGH!!

We MAY lose our way into the playoffs, but Carlos Zambrano, if he continues this, is responsib;e for today - and the KEY to getting us INTO the playoffs.

I am SO pissed off and frustrated.

It is SEPTEMBER, and we're STILL IN IT! YES!

I was hoping they
have a psychologist to talk to Z if he will do that. He definitely needs help. This can't go on.

Very disappointing day for sure.

I love this team!!!

by sue369 on Sep 3, 2007 6:03 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

today was the day that
Zambrano the drunk ran his car into the tree...but he walked away and survived (so to speak). He sobers up and becomes a model citizen and leads the Cubs through October with stellar pitching performances. And just like the networks keep showing Lou getting kicked out on 6/3 as a turning point, maybe this 9/3 melt down by Z and his pointing to his ear as he was being boo'd will be another turning point that will be rerun by the networks as a key day in the "March of the Cubs in 2007."
Prince Fielder...he is neither.

by LAcarl519 on Sep 3, 2007 6:02 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

As I said earlier...
I think Lou will have a very strong talk with Z after the game. I wouldn't be surprised if they have a shrink work with him too. I just think we will see a new man in 5 days.
Prince Fielder...he is neither.

If it was that easy why haven't they done it befor
The Cubs have had plenty of occassion to want to do this before.  I don't think it's that easy.

by Saratoga on Sep 3, 2007 6:35 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

They can talk all they want
... but he has to be receptive to it.

Maybe, after such overwhleming evidence his behavior cost the Cubs a game, he will be.

by Not Bruce Froemming on Sep 3, 2007 6:37 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

agreed, of course.
It was disappointing to hear Big Z's interview after the game where he called the fans selfish for booing him when he was taken out. If he didn't think his "body of work" today was worthy of booing that is disappointing. Z has to understand that he PERSONALLY took the team out of the game with his bone-headed running and walks. On the other hand, he did say that his best games are ahead and he wants to make the fans cheer again. So, in spite of his disappointment over the booing, he wants to get back out there and have cheers and not take the booing personally. As Lou said after the game, Z has to stop trying to do to much.
Prince Fielder...he is neither.

There is nothing "embarrassing"
about seeking out professional counseling. It can be  really a terrific thing.

But Bruce, you're right.

The person has to be receptive.

I did not boo - and bit my tongue.

But I DID boo Joe West!

It is SEPTEMBER, and we're STILL IN IT! YES!

Joe West deserves it
if only for his musicianship. That he's an awful umpire is only a bonus. :)

Cowboy Joe West's "Run with the Big Dogs".

Well, believe it or not, I have recorded worse.

IMO, Its not TERRIBLE, per se, but it certainly could make it on the Annoying Music Show, on NPR!

UGH!

I wish to hell he'd just retire already and go on tour instead of umpiring like we come to see him Ump.

Was there something I said
that made you think I thought seeing a shrink was embarrassing? I hope not!! I live in LA. Almost everyone here is in counseling and on meds!

No, no , no!
Not at all!

I was just "talking out loud".

A good friend of mine, who is Hispanic, and a MSW, has told me that it is challenging, due to the culture, for Latino males to want to accept or try counseling.

I would hope it could be beneficial for Z.

So who agrees that Murton should never start in RF
ever ever again?

I love the pinch hit HRs over the last week, don't get me wrong.  I think he can have a great MLB career ahead of him... as a DH.  The game was never on Murton's shoulders today, but he played some balls out there so piss poor it would be comical if he wasn't hurting the Cubs.  Right now he's a better pinch hitter off the bench than Ward but he can't even match Ward when it comes to defense.

We're all depressed at this disappointing game... ...the last thing we need now is another Murton argument thread that gets everyone riled up.

Rumors around the league
From comments on baseball sites I have read they say that Zambrano is trying to cover an arm injury. If that is true, then why is he still pitching? He doesn't look liike the same pitcher (forget this year) who came up as a rookie a few years ago. One thing I noticed is he seeems to get into a habit of throwing 3/4 delivery to a submarine delivery during an at bat. I'm certainely no expert, but he does not look comfortable out there. If he is nursing some kind of shoulder or arm injury, then they better get him out of the starting rotation before he blows out that multi-million dollar arm.

The Cubs missed a golden opportunity to pick up a game on their two closest rivals now they have to win at least two of the next three. If they do, I think they will be OK, but if they don't they are in serious troouble going on the road.

I loved it when Harry cried, "Cubs Win, Cubs Win!"

zambrano injury...not a physical one!
a shoulder injury typically manifests itself through a decrease in pitch velocity, which is not the case with carlos.

an elbow injury typically manifests itself through a decrease in the movement of pitches, which is not the case with carlos.

the inability to compose oneself, at all, typically manifests itself through incessant meltdowns...ladies and gentlemen, i give you carlos zambrano!
