Open Thread: Cubs vs. Reds, Sunday 9/30, 12:15 CT

CINCINNATI -- This is the thirty-ninth year of divisional play. The Cubs played 25 years in the old NL East and this is their 14th season in the NL Central. In all that time, only once (the division title year of 1989) did they have a winning record against all the other teams in their own division.

If they win today, they'll accomplish that feat again.

So that's something to shoot for, even though Lou Piniella says the regulars may not play again today:

"It doesn't really mean anything right now except an extra at-bat or two," Cubs manager Lou Piniella said. "I think it's more important to rest them than to play them."
There is, as I noted in yesterday's recap, one thing that one regular can shoot for -- if Mark DeRosa plays and can go 4-for-4, he'd finish the year hitting .300. He's already had two 5-for-5 games against the Reds this year, so such a day isn't impossible for DeRo.

Here's the scoop on the Cubs' possible first-round opponents -- and that's right, with one day to go in the regular season, the Cubs could still play any of three (Diamondbacks, Phillies or Mets).

If San Diego wins their game at Milwaukee today, they are the wild card winner and the Cubs would play the Diamondbacks. Period. However, if SD loses and Colorado beats Arizona, they'd be tied. That would result in a SD-Colorado playoff -- but ONLY if the Phillies and Mets BOTH lose. There are other two-team playoff scenarios, and here's a good rundown of what would happen if three or four teams tie after today's games.

 Today's Starting Pitchers
Ted Lilly
 T. Lilly
Cubs
vs. Homer Bailey
 H. Bailey
Reds
15-8 W-L 3-2
3.86 ERA 5.67
173 SO 23
55 BB 24
28 HR 2
vs. Cin -- vs. Cubs
According to this article, Ted Lilly won't throw more than about 40 pitches today, which probably wouldn't get him enough innings to earn his sixteenth win. If he does throw five innings and qualifies for a win, that'd be the most wins by a Cub lefthander since 1970, when Kenny Holtzman won 17.

"Homer" is a really bad name for a pitcher, wouldn't you say? (It's not his true given name, either; it's David Dewitt Bailey.) Bailey is one of the Reds' best pitching prospects; he is only 21 years old and has struggled with control (24 walks in 39.2 IP). This will be his first career start against the Cubs.

Site notes: I have added the 2007 MLB postseason schedule to the right sidebar under "Stat Corner". Also, since I'll be leaving right after the game to drive back to Chicago, probably not arriving till late evening, today's recap may be delayed till tomorrow morning.

Today's game is cable-only. Well, get used to it, since that'll be the case for all the Division Series games, too. Here is today's Mediacenter link.

Regardless, rooting for SD win today
Even though the 4 team scramble would be fun to watch and sort out rooting for SD to win and NY and Philly to win for one play-in....

Even though out here in CO I am seeing them one game short and removing the hottest team in September....also I think the Rockies will be dealing this winter for pitchers and willing to trade Hawpe with their plethera of other big young hitters available.

Time of Wednesday's Game
I know it's too early to know anything for sure, but if the Padres clinch today ensuring the Cubs play the D'Backs, I'm wondering what time the Wednesday and Thursday games will likely be played. With the Red Sox playing on Wednesday and the Yankees opening on Thursday I figure those two games will get the prime-time slots. And from my recollections there are often West Coast games that start at 9pm Central in the playoffs. But there could also be afternoon games in Phoenix that start at around 3pm in Chicago.  Obviously we'll just have to wait and see, but it seems as if we're likely looking at late afternoon or late night games on Wednesday and Thursday.

Could someone explain to me...
...why the Phillies are feared around here?

by cwyers on Sep 30, 2007 10:42 AM CDT up reply actions

Because
their lineup (and ballpark) has the ability to destroy a pitching staff.

Their pitching is also starting to come around, at least in the bullpen and Cole Hamels as a starter.  Romero/Gordon/Myers has been effective out of the pen for the last month or so.

Even if you beat them, your bullpen might be so destroyed you'd have nothing left for the next series.

Their starting pitching beyond Hamels is terrible, but with their lineup, one starter might be all they need.

by Josh Timmers on Sep 30, 2007 11:10 AM CDT up reply actions

See, that's exactly why...
...I think the Phillies would match up nicely against us. Ok, so they have the most potent lineup in the National League. But that tends to matter less in the postseason than having a good starting rotation, which is exactly what the Cubs are fielding. And about the furthest thing from what the Phillies have. The Phillies have allowed 50 more runs than the Nationals have this season.

The Cubs have the second-best pitching in the NL according to runs allowed, and they're second to the Padres -- who benefit greatly from Petco. I think the Phillies are just the sort of team the Cubs can have their way with.

Now, mind you, anything can happen in a short series. And all of the teams we're talking about facing in the playoffs are good ball clubs, and all of them can win games. So I don't want to come off too dismissive here. But I think the Phillies are a favorable matchup for the Cubs.

I completely agree...
...this is why I would rather face the Phillies or Mets than the Padres or D-Backs.  The former two, great offenses but HORRIBLE pitching staffs; the latter two, great staffs.

You hit the problem though
It's a short, five game series.  Cole Hamels is the one Phillies pitcher who is actually quite good.  He could go twice in a five game series.  We might never see the really terrible Phillies pitchers on the back end of the rotation.

I'd say in a short series, the Phillies have great starting pitching to go with a great lineup.

In the NLCS I don't fear the Phillies so much.  But in the NLDS, with Hamels starting twice in five games, the Phillies are going to be very tough to beat--and it would probably take five games and all eleven Cub pitchers to do it.

The artist formerly known as JoshinLA

by Josh Timmers on Sep 30, 2007 11:28 AM CDT up reply actions

At that point, though...
...all you're really saying is that you fear Cole Hamels more than Pedro, Peavy or Webb. There may well be a case there, but it's marginal compared to the differences in the rest of the pitching staff. The Phillies' #2 starter isn't exactly impressive.
FREE CARMEN PIGNATIELLO!

by cwyers on Sep 30, 2007 11:34 AM CDT up reply actions

I do fear
Hamels more than an injured, broken down Pedro.  But you're missing the point.  I fear Hamels plus the Phillies offense more than I fear Webb plus the Diamondbacks offense or Peavy plus the Padres offense.

Games, even in the post-season, are not won by starting pitching alone.

The artist formerly known as JoshinLA

by Josh Timmers on Sep 30, 2007 11:57 AM CDT up reply actions

I agree with you...
The Mets would be limping in with a really dodgy starting rotation, and guys like Delgado and Reyes really struggling in the last month.

Plus, no serious reliable, lock down starters. Maine pitched well yesterday, but he's been terrible. Ditto Glavine, el Puke, and Pedro is still weak and been knocked around a bit.

The Phils offense is insane.

about the Red Sox and Yankees getting prime time slots.  In 2003, the Cubs were in prime time and the Yankees got bumped to the middle of the afternoon--and boy, were Yankee fans PO'd about it.

We're probably the bigger ratings draw than the Yankees and Sox right now.  Or at least close enough to make it a tough decision for TBS.

Playoff Roster
I would put Blanco on the roster if he is truely healthy and has played.  However, he has hardly played (15 ABs since he came off the DL).

Sounds like they want to take 11 pitchers, so here's my take on the playoff roster.

P - Zambrano, Lilly, Hill, Marquis, Wood, Marmol, Wuertz, Eyre, Howry, Dempster, Marshall

C - Soto, Kendall

IF - Lee, DeRosa, Theriot, Ramirez, Fontenot, Ward

OF - Soriano, Jones, Floyd, Murton, Monroe, Pie

Left off - Cedeno, Blanco, Trachsel, Ohman

If Ward's injury doesn't heal, you might take Blanco I guess.  He and Cedeno I think are the only others with a chance to make it.  Any thoughts on the roster??

by Paul1984 on Sep 30, 2007 10:39 AM CDT up reply actions

Why Pie??
He has hardly played and his hitting is suspect.

Pie??
I know that choice is questionable.  I like the option of speed he gives late in the game, especially in a short playoff series.  If Cedeno goes insted of Fontenot, then maybe not Pie.

by Paul1984 on Sep 30, 2007 10:55 AM CDT up reply actions

Sigh.
We already know the position players on the roster:

Lee
Ramirez
DeRosa
Theriot
Soriano
Jones
Floyd
Monroe
Murton
Pie
Cedeno
Kendall
Soto
Ward

After today, Ward's hand injury will be evaluated, and if he can't play, Sam Fuld will replace him.

As for why Pie -- he's our best defensive center fielder, and defense wins championships.

Thanks cwyers
If Fuld goes instead of Ward, are you ok with 7 outfielders and only 5 infielders?  I did like Fuld last Saturday as I was at the game and saw his great catch from the right field upper deck.

by Paul1984 on Sep 30, 2007 11:16 AM CDT up reply actions

Ward is technically an outfielder...
...even though his best position is probably first base. I'm pretty comfortable with using Floyd/Soto/Murton as backups at first if such a thing is needed -- or at least as comfortable as I can be when such a concept includes losing Derrek Lee.

Between Cedeno, Theriot and DeRosa the other three middle infield positions are reasonably well backed up (all of them have played all three positions this season). So at this point it becomes a question of having enough lumbering, defensively-inadequate pinch-hitting forces and enough punch-and-judy defenders so that you can try to get the advantage in late innings, and quite frankly this club has more narrowly-useful outfielders than we do infielders to require so many substitutions.

FREE CARMEN PIGNATIELLO!

by cwyers on Sep 30, 2007 11:23 AM CDT up reply actions

Cedeno
has to be on the roster.  DeRo has only played 8 innings at SS this season.  (Lou hasn't yet figured out that DeRo is an excellent SS because he never plays him there.)  It wouldn't be fair for him to be the only backup SS.

Fontenot only plays one position.  He's a LH PH -- but Ward is our #1 LH PH.  He runs well, but Pie and Cedeno are faster as PRs.  Not much versatility there, though he and Cedeno may both make it.

Trib ownership tally
In approx. 25 years this be their 5th playoff appearance; not horrible record but never advanced to WS...be a nice finishing touch.

The last 10 years of Wrigley ownership 73-82 or were pretty grim..I don't see that kind of dry stretch again given new alignment and ownership.

They've built a pretty solid core now just have to tinker around the edges and will be solid contender for years to come, or should be barring catastropes.

Santo made solid point that one of big reasons for Cubs success this year is lack of debilitating injuries...only Soriano for a near-month, and none of the pitchers missed a sked turn.

Compare to Cards' woes and Brewers losing Sheets for last month or so and that's a good reason we finished first.

Trivia
I know a lot of this "post-season" records are nonsense, since the only post-season before 1969 was the World Series, but . . .

Assuming Kerry Wood appears in a game in the post-season, Wood will become the first player since Phil Cavarretta in 1945 to appear as a Cub in three different post-seasons.  Stan Hack appeared in his fourth post-season with the Cubs that year.  (I can't believe it either)  Lon Warneke was also on the 1945 Cubs (as well as the 1932 and 1935 Cubs), but he didn't appear in the 1945 World Series.

Now let's get Kerry something that none of those guys have--a World Series championship.

Soto over Kendall
It seems to me that most people here are pro-Soto. Kendall is hitting well under .200 in September, and has a terrible throwing arm. IF the Cubs face Arizona, you need a guy behind the plate that can neutralize their running game. The DBacks have trouble scoring consistently, and will manufacture any way possible.

Kendall's only playoff experience was last year with Oakland, so it's not like he brings extra savvy to the postseason.

Soto doesn't appear intimidated by the situation at all. He would add some serious pop to the bottom portion of the lineup.

A few thought's that may seem crazy to some of you...

Against Arizona's righties, put Jones in the two-hole. He did well there when Sori was on the DL...although that would put two guys at the top that can't take a walk to save their lives.  Never mind.

Nobody is mentioning Kevin Hart for the playoff roster. The has been near unhittable since his call-up. Could be a great long man for when Marquis gets shelled in Game 4!

4-5 innings
According to Lou's pregame, the regulars may go 4-5 innings. My bet is they'll get 2 at-bats each.

Lilly will go 2-3 innings (30-40 pitches) then we're likely to see as many as seven relievers get one inning of work each.

I expect to see Hart pitch two innings today.  If he does well, Lou has to decide if he's willing to commit to having Z come back on three days rest if it gets to a Game 4.  If he's not willing to commit to that, Marquis needs to be on the roster to start Game 4.

Personally, I'd commit to Z and bring Marquis back for the NLCS.

Marquis
Perhaps the key to a world series winner is leaving Jason Marquis off your playoff roster. It worked for the Cards last year... kind of like the trend of firing Buck Showalter and then going on to win the championship the following season.

Seriously, though, there has to be some major concern about Marquis and his effectiveness. This game and this win is inconsequential, but Marquis has had two lousy starts before today's inspired effort. Of late, he is plagued by one big inning and you cannot afford that in the playoffs. What really has to concern the Cubs is the fact that he's not getting the good downward movement and today he was trying to pour fastballs past the batter and that is not how Marquis succeeds. He seems lost.

Frankly, I think I'd rather have Marshall the guy if the Cubs are going to go w/ 4 starters.

diff circumstances stuck with him
with ST L last year he was on expiring contract...cubs are committed to him for 2 more years would devastate his confidence if dropped again from playoff roster.

he will be on very short leash if used at all however; agree he's been strugglin but this a strange role for him from pen, may be able to give 4-5 OK innings (1, 2 runs) as starter in playoff depending on foe...but I'm not confident.

Brewers
Just noticed that Prince Fielder isn't starting at 1B today. Seems odd to me that on the final day of the season, against a team needing a win to get into the playoffs that he wouldn't start. May be nothing, but could this be a sign of tension in the Brewers ranks, problems w/ Ned Yost and other issues? I'm surprised that he's not at least starting and getting an at bat or two.

I think...
... this is more about Prince than Yost, or, more specifically, not a simple decision to just not start Prince. When is the last time a healthy star player sat out the final day of the season, if even just for a few innings? I think this is a sign of the deeper problems in the Brewers club house and why, very likely, Ned Yost is likely to be soon looking for a job.

Dempster has been very good when it's mattered - not perfect, but there aren't any perfect closers anymore.  When we've gone into the ninth with a lead, he's very likely to come out with the save.

How he performs in Game 162, where he and we and everyone else knows it doesn't matter who wins, is no indication of his quality.

Speculation on Fielder
I am watching the Cubs, and Bears on-line, so I haven't had the chance to flip to Pads/Brewers.

But yesterday, late in the game, that former Houston outfielder, picked up by the Pads smashed into Fielder in a close play at 1B -- the runner (uselessly) decided to slide, the throw was low -- Fielder went down to pick the throw.

As the runner smashed into Fielder, Price wne down awkwardly on his ankle (left, I believe) and stayed down, in pain. After a delay, he stayed in the game.

24 hours later, that ankle could be barking. Why play him, if that's the case. Perhaps, the answer is over at the other BCB, but I have no need to go there.

Marquis WILL be on the post-season roster. They didn't pay him that cash to go home. It's a great concern that he hasn't had a great outing since St. Louis, but he won't be left home. It was easy for the Cardinals to leave a free-agent pitcher off their roster. Different situation, here.

Bears: As may have been posted earlier, the O-Line stinks. That's part of the QB problem. And, when by now -- it should be clear Cedric Benson is a wasted draft choice -- and can't run. He's slow off the snap, can't create anything, the O-line can't clear a path, and besides that -- seems to be soft. Why do you think Turner keeps throwing the ball?

Add the injuries, and you have a mix for a miserable season. (Tait is now out of this game)

Boy, the window to return to the Super Bowl may have slammed shut way early.

Unless he is hiding
an injury, Marquis will be on the post-season roster. And, I wonder if that could be the case. He did an adequate job this season, save for the last 2 starts and today.

Marquis had nothing at all today -- looked like BP. Fastball right on a line. Off speed pitches all up. But still -- he's a vet and might be able to recover. Except for Lilly, every starter has had a down streak -- Zambrano's troubles being the most notable.

by San Diego Smooth Jazz Man on Sep 30, 2007 2:25 PM CDT reply actions

Marquis
I wouldn't worry too much about today, because Marquis is not used to coming in as a reliever.  The last two starts haven't been good though.

The good thing about Jason this year is that he has been able to right himself after a little slump, and he has been at his best when the Cubs needed him most desparately.

Roster question
According to MLB.com (http://chicago.cubs.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20070930&content_id=2241051&vkey=news_chc&a mp;fext=.jsp&c_id=chc), JJ will start in CF against both RHPs and LHPs because of his defense.  Floyd will be in RF against RHPs and Murton will be in RF against LHPs.

Do we need Monroe on the roster in that case?  Pie would be the backup CF as you don't want to count on Monroe as the only backup CF.  Kendall/Soto can PH, though the Snakes' bullpen doesn't have that many LHPs.  Leaving Monroe off would allow Lou to keep both Fontenot and Cedeno.  If you only take one, one injury screws everything.  It's easier for IFers (especially DeRo) to move to OF than vice versa -- and you DEFINITELY don't want Sori at 2B in a meaningful game.

Fontenot or Monroe?

I never was a Griese fan and I disagreed in having him start. Grossman should have been the starter to begin with throughout the season, barring injury. The bears issues are deeper than QB. The schedule, everyone gunning for you, and plain luck all play factors in getting to the big show.

Bench griese, and find another rb.

  1. Throw a low fastball to Soriano leading off the game?
  2. Kick off to Devin Hester when you just returned an INT for a touchdown to deflate the Bears?

Completely OT, but Carlos Pena??
He was supposed to be the bomb when he was in the Texas organization, and looked to be the next David McCarty instead, bouncing around several organizations.  And now he has 46 HR for a very bad Tampa Bay team where you figure he's being pitched around a fair amount.

Amazing.

One of the two worst since divisional play
There was a good article in BP the other day about this topic.  The 1995 Angels were worse, but the Mets were still a 99.8% lock for a playoff spot earlier this month.

500-1 cannot be completely luck.  And Randolph's comment will come back to haunt him.

Still, I do not think he will be fired unless the Yankees win the WS.

Start Grossman, he is the best QB on the roster, which is not saying much, and don't pass for 40 attempts per game.

The real problem is Marquis. He's needed, and I cannot understand why he had become so horribly ineffective since beating the Cardinals.

>>If Marquis isn't chosen for the roster, that opens up a spot for rookie right-hander Kevin Hart, who was on the bubble in the 11-man playoff staff. Marquis finished the season with a 12-9 record and 4.60 earned-run average. He has a 6.21 ERA in September, and a 5.73 ERA in the second half.

Hart was a September call-up, but has distinguished himself with a 0.82 ERA in eight relief appearances heading into Sunday's game.

Ryan Dempster is assured of a post-season spot, but he's not doing himself any favors either. Dempster gave up four runs in the fourth inning, the seventh time in his last nine appearances he's given up at least one run. <<
