Open Thread: Cubs vs. Dodgers, Wednesday 9/5, 7:05 CT

When the Cubs made their stirring comeback vs. the Astros on Sunday, some of you compared that game to this August 29, 1989 pennant race game, also against Houston.

What's happened since Sunday has begun to mirror 1989 in other ways, too. After that dramatic win, the Cubs lost six of nine ... and had their lead cut to half a game, just as it is now. That included blowing a 7-1, 7th-inning lead to the Cardinals on September 8.

The day after that the Cubs came from behind to tie in the 8th inning and won in dramatic fashion, 3-2 in 10, when Luis Salazar's double down the line in a light rain scored Andre Dawson from first base.

That was the first of a six-game winning streak, and the 1989 Cubs won 15 of their last 21 games. I trust we don't have to go through six losses to get to the hot streak that we need. Two is enough. Let's go increase that lead tonight.

 Today's Starting Pitchers

vs. LA -- vs. Cubs
Step it up, Ted Lilly, please. You've been good most of the year, but you haven't won in almost a month (since August 9). Lilly is 1-0 in three career appearances vs. the Dodgers, but with an unsightly 6.57 ERA, including this mediocre performance on May 25 at Dodger Stadium, in which he was yanked with the Cubs down 5-0, only to see them take an 8-5 lead and blow it.

Let's hope those days are long behind us. The only Dodgers who have more than six career AB vs. Lilly are two players who probably won't play today: Nomar Garciaparra (3-for-10) and Shea Hillenbrand (4-for-10).

I don't have much to say about Stults, who is yet another young lefthander who the Cubs have never seen before. When I hear his name I keep thinking of this actor, whose name sounds very similar.

Good news for Derrek Lee today -- he has been named the Cubs recipient of the Roberto Clemente Award, and will be one of the 30 (one for each team) finalists for the national Clemente Award. This award is given "to the Major League Baseball player who combines outstanding skills on the baseball field with devoted work in the community." Derrek is being recognized for his work on Project 3000. You can vote for D-Lee to win the national award by clicking here. (WARNING! That page starts playing a commercial without notice.)

Today's game is on two national channels -- WGN and ESPN -- and also at today's Mediacenter link.

Can't be beat by one guy
recently it's been one guy, usually not the superstar, that's beaten the Cubs. Be it Corey Hart, or Hunter Pence, or Matt Kemp with his 4 almost 5 hits last night. Seems like there's always one guy they don't read the scouting report on. Let's not see that tonight. Shut 'em all down!

Let's hear Steve Goodman sing tonight!!!!

Gotta win tonight
and tomorrow, really.Losing 3 of 4 at home in September in the middle of a pennant race to an evenly mediocre team as the Dodgers, would be a tough pill to swollow and barring another scuffle, the team's moral would be in the tank.

 Getting swept, would be disasterous.

I actually have a good feeling about tonight's game however. Cubs are gonna pull it out tonight.

Wow...
The Dodgers came in with a .5 game better record than the Cubs and they play in the West where everyone is over .500 except the "Gints." Do you want to take back that "mediocre" line...just for karma tonight? Believe me, I HATE the Dodgers, but for a Cub fan to call them mediocre is a bit odd. Either way, GO CUBS!!!! Kick butt tonight!
Prince Fielder...he is neither.

No I don't, but thank you.
Dodgers are an absolutely mediocre Offense and an underachieving and inconsistent starting rotation.

Even HOF Orel Hershiser just said when talking about the 2007 LA Dodgers "a mediocre team, fighting for it's life."

We need a streak
Enough with this win one-lose one-win two-lose two nonsense; I agree with Al - let's do something this team hasn't done since June - win 6 straight.

Like Al says, there is no reason why they can't start tonight on National TV.

Let's do it Ted!

And please, no double plays tonight either!

all RH lineup
I seem to remember this not working vs. the Astros, and the Houston announcers mentioning that Lou should've stuck in at least ONE LH bat, just to shake it up a bit. I guess didn't hear the game.....

Ughh, what a terrible and catastrophic lineup.

I take back my previous good feelings about tonight's game and a Cubs W.

It's gonna be nearly impossible to win with this lineup. Lilly has to pitch one of his best games of the year tonight.

well said
what is wrong with you people?  All doom and damn gloom.  Take a step back.  We're in first place.  We're in a playoff chase.  You're ready to give up on tonight hours before the game starts.  Baseball's funny sometimes, you can throw out your best offensive lineup sometimes and get 2 runs, then the next night you throw something completely different out there and get 7.  You just dont know.

I for one am glad Soto's starting tonight.  Cedeno too.  Lets' get a damn win, eh?

Cedeno
I'm not sure that I ever like seeing that name in the lineup, but at least Lou was smart enough to do it with a fly ball pitcher on the mound.  Also, at least Lou doesn't have him batting second like last time.

I would like to see one LHB in the 5 or 6 spot just to make the pitcher "change lanes".

Apparently, Iowa actually plays in A ball. But lists themselves in AAA. Hence everyone on the roster hitting over .350.

It seems like
every time lately that the team seems ready to fall off the cliff, they turn it around. Hopefully, today is another instance.

What's troubling has the failure of both Zambrano and Lilly to be stoppers. That has to stop.

Stults was called up from Las Vegas but didn't pitch against the Iowa team although he was used as a PH. His WHIP in Vegas was atrocious, 1.97, although he had most of his trouble pitching at home there. Las outing he only threw 4.2 innings, giving up 5BB. He seems best suited for pitching in LA as he is a flyball pitcher. He's primarily a reliever who shouldn't go over 5 innings so if we are patient, we can get into middle relief against the Dodgers.

Hopefully Lilly shuts down LA early and we take a lead for once. Our end of game relievers are rested so there is no reason to lose this game.

Monroe in CF with Murton in RF?
Let's hope for no center/right field gappers.

Jones and Theriot needed a rest though.  I can't remember the last time those guys had a day off, certainly not together.  Love seeing the Pacific Coast League MVP in the lineup!

If we play an American League team, should Zambrano hit for himself, Blanco at C and Kendall DHs?

Wow!!! What did Theriot do to deserve being replaced by Cedeno???? Monroe and Murton!!!! Yucky....and a national TV audience gets to see us score even fewer runs!!!! Not impressed with Lou's thinking here!!! Gonna go vomit and the maybe watch our Double A lineup struggle against a rookie pitcher. Onward to 2nd Place!!!!

by razzpunk on Sep 5, 2007 5:56 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

I have seen this before from stupid as a fox
managers like Piniella. He is saying to his team I have confidence in everyone here. He is also saying that some players need some rest and some players need some opportunity.

Monroe...show us now how you played in Detroit.
Soto...show us how you won that MVP in AAA
Cedeno show us how you hit .350 in AAA.

Cubs also cannot win by one player here, they have to win by a team. Lilly will have to pitch smart tonight. But I bet by the 5th inning the Cubs have knocked out the young lefty (BTW Cubs are 12-0 in their last twelve in facing rookie pitchers.)

Then LA will bring in their RH bullpen and Piniella will begin his double switches....Jones, Pie, maybe even Blanco.

Milw-09-24-98--Brown in for defense--bases loaded--flyball--HE DROPPED THE BALL!!!NO NO NO, cubs lose 8-7

I agree!
Every time the BCB posts HATE the line up, it usually is a winner. But I did ask (above) has the all RH line up (against LH pitchers) ever been a winner? I don't recall it ever working...but of course now that we are past 9/1 we do have RH bats on the bench for pinch-hitting late in the game. BTW, I am not complaining about Lou's strategy, just asking if anyone knows about Lou's success with this. I know Brenly prefers to mix 2 a couple of LH bats to keep the LH pitcher off-balance. Anyway...we are WAY OVERDUE in giving our starter a fat lead. Let's score early and often!!!

First of all, there's no speed in the line up.
Second, Murton in RF? Ughh!
Third, Monroe is Detroit's payback for Neifi.
Fourth, DeRosa can't bunt but he's 2nd? Ughh!
Fifth, Cedeño?! Need I say more?
All we need now is Ohman in relief and Pie in CF. (For all of you who are calling for Pie to play tonight, check his stats. Pie couldn't hit lefties in AAA, either and tonight's pitcher for the Dodgers is a lefty.)

Did we really need to rest everyone at once, Lou?

by TheEman on Sep 5, 2007 7:44 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

The short answer is no.
No, it is NOT possible for Ronny Cedeno to continue doing what he's been doing at the plate and have a .116 batting average over a large enough sample size. He hits his fair share of line drives, and has been spectacularly unlucky in limited playing time.

Or, you could listen to the grognards. "Dur, keep your stats away from my baseball! Ronny Cedeno sucks!"

Yeah. That's it.

It was the right call
Lilly pitched well. Instead of taking chances of him completely running out of gas and opening up the floodgates, Lou was right in going to Carlos. He, Howry and Dempster haven't pitched in two days and are fully rested.

It was 1994, some history
April 9th to be exact, near a bar by UIC, off Taylor St. He was shot in the neck and in critical condition for a couple days.

Wayne at the time was much more famous for his stirring rendition of the Star Spangled Banner at Chicago Stadium prior to the start of Blackhawks games. His singing coupled with the Barton organ and a packed Stadium of 19,000 screaming BlackHawks fans created a roar that will never be duplicated.

Chicago Stadium closed that spring to the [taped] voice of Wayne Messmer singing the anthem at 'Hawks games. Wayne returned to the hockey scene in Chicago as part of senior leadership of the new Chicago Wolves of the then International Hockey League (IHL, defunct as of 2001). Once part of the 'rival' Wolves, the Wirtz and the BlackHawks fired Wayne, only after he sung at the opening of BlackHawk hockey United Center in Jan, 1995 (after the lock-out).

Now this...
is a vintage 2007 Cubs win.  This is how they looked when winning those June/July games (outside of Murton's bizarre outfield defense).  Maybe they can bottle this mojo!!  Mostly solid defense, pitching that keeps the defense in the game, timely hitting, aggressive running (even though it didn't always work out).

The Lord didn't answer my prayers.
Because Lou kept Soriano leading off. The guys on ESPN had a ball commenting that he shouldn't hit in that spot.

Regardless, it was a well played game. It was blown open by the regular guys pinch hitting and not by the horrendous lineup that Lou put up. In fact, that lineup gave us another DP in the 1st inning, the horrible defense and base running by "Neifi's payback" in CF (who had a Neifi! moment driving in a run once), Murton's adventures in RF, Soriano's 1,2,3 quick K's and Cedeño hitting fly balls all night long. (At least he brought his glove.) Only DeRosa rose up to the challenge, hitting 2nd. I'm glad I was wrong about that. The bad part is that because we won, Lou might be hard headed enough to repeat that kind of lineup tomorrow. Ughh!

Kudos to Soto for his defense, running and hitting. He is definitely our catcher of the future once he comes to know the pitchers and learns to handle the pressure this month. He's doing well so far. Hopefully Lou is impressed and will give Soto more chances to play. Kendall will appreciate the rest. Blanco can catch "Carloco" Zambrano (and punch him in the face) as far as I'm concerned.

Theriot is the team's spark plug.

I hope the players will now stop bitching at the fans' booing and recognize the "love" they got tonight. I also hope I only see Cedeño as a defensive replacement. And I don't want to see the starting lineup again, especially Monroe in CF. ESPN's Hershiser almost had a heart attack watching him play CF.

Finally, hat's off to Ted Lilly. He's been the stopper all season long and he didn't disappoint us tonight. He saved the best for the last month. Can Carloco use Lilly as a role model?

Let's split this series tomorrow and win the home stand!
