Oh, The Humanity

Trade talks between the Mariners and Orioles about Erik Bedard...

appear to be somewhere between a standstill and a low simmer
... wow, how thrilling. Sounds like something Andy MacPhail would be into. But wait, there's more!
... a number of the teams once sniffing around a potential Bedard deal have dropped by the wayside. The Dodgers got their pitcher when it signed Japanese pitcher Hiroki Kuroda. The Mets didn't offer enough for the Orioles' liking, and their impending acquisition of Johan Santana from the Twins eliminates their need for Bedard. The Reds wouldn't give up their top outfield prospect, Jay Bruce.
Meaning Andy's been going over his cellphone limits and has accomplished nothing. And...
Bedard also did not comment on the continuing negotiations. "I can't say anything right now," Bedard said Monday night to the Ottawa Citizen. Previous rumors had him headed to the Toronto Blue Jays. "Sorry, I just can't [say anything]."
Meaning Andy told him to shut up, especially about those Blue Jays rumors (where did that come from?). Finally...
MacPhail has been in contact with [Peter] Angelos about potential deals, the [Baltimore] Sun reported. "I talked to him today, and I expect that I'll probably talk to him tomorrow as well," MacPhail said.
How thrilling! MacPhail has conversation with Angelos! Tune in tomorrow for still more exciting MacPhail-Angelos dialogue!

Just one more thing.

MAKE IT STOP. PLEASE, MAKE IT STOP.

AGREED
At this point, no matter how much Brian Roberts might or might not help this team, I hope Hendry will take those chips he's offering the O's and look somewhere else. Nobody is gonna want to deal with the Orioles after all this crap.

That's why
it's impossible to make a major deal with the Orioles.  Angelos is psychotic.

I agree.  Let's forget about Roberts.

Let's forget Roberts............
.........and focus on Bedard!

After the Santana deal, the price for his services should be less than originally anticipated.

That is not going to work
The Cubs are really the only ones interested in Roberts.  Andy will use that to his advantage.  If the Cubs offer a good package for Bedard, the Cubs will probably not have enough for Roberts.  So Andy is better trading Bedard to another team with good offer and then get some more players for Roberts.
PC load letter, what the f*** does that mean?

If only one team is interested
that kind of limits the market for that player doesn't it?  So, how exactly is Andy going to use that to his advantage?  What it boils down to is how much the Orioles really want to start rebuilding and how much Angelos is muking up the works.  If only the Cubs being interested in Roberts, that's good for the Cubs, not the Orioles.

Orioles
People need to understand how monumentally screwed up this organization is and has been for a while now. There are layers upon layers, much like the Blackhawks under their old guard. This is all headed by Peter Angelos, who has to have a say in everything. So if you're trying to pinpoint the cause of this all, look at Angelos who has really screwed up one of the sport's great franchises over the past decade.

Oh, and by the way...
...with the Santana derby over, the Red Sox are now making Coco Crisp available. There are rumblings that the Cubs may be interested. All very vague, I know.

Crisp
is definitely available.  I'd really rather give Pie a shot, but Crisp would fit with our team pretty nicely, as long as Piniella doesn't try to bat him lead-off.

trading partners
Now that The O's have exhausted their only "rube at the state fair" partner by fleecing the Astros, the sledding has gotten a lot tougher. The deal O's made for Tejada was so bad for Houston that it rivals the one that got Purpurra fired from last year (December 12, 2006: Jason Jennings and Miguel Asencio to the Houston Astros for Taylor Buchholz, Jason Hirsh, and Willy Taveras).

Hirsh has a chance to be truly dominant. I saw him in person a couple times in AAA and he was untouchable. I can't imagine how Houston ever thought that was a good deal.

Does anyone know if Kerry Wood ever goes to card shows, etc to do signings, and if so how I'd find out where that is?  I have a jersey of his I'd like to get autographed.

Also, I think that all the otehr deals for Bedard have falen through should be encouraging, not frustrating. Hendry should start circling Baltimore like a buzzard, waiting for desparation on their part.

Wood...
He ocasionally does some private signings through a local company schwartz sports (recently bought by another company).  These are very limited though - website is www.schwartzsports.com.

You can also check out this website as well www.csac.biz they post all the appearances of certain athletes and what not, whether it is a marketing thing or an actual signing.  You have to pay a fee to get advance signing notices but they will give you day of info for free (meaning if Kerry is signing today you can get the info today).  This site is great for during the Cubs season, alot of times you can get some up and coming Cub players (last year, Hill, Theriot) for great prices.

Jody Davis looks to be right then. He was the one most adamant at Fantasy Camp that Angelos is a nut case and Roberts will never be traded to the Cubs as long as Angelos is around.

He also told a good Mike Fontenot story. He said that last spring, due to a numbers crunch, Fontenot was thisclose to being released. Enough people stuck up for him, he was retained and he ended up being a valuable member of the big club for a while.

It's very unfortunate for them...
that they are in the AL East.  I believe they might be contending for the NL Central title this year if they were in our division.  They have talented young pitchers (Kazmir, Shields, Garza) and a very promising group of offensive players.

Unfortunately, as you said, they have virtually no shot to compete in that division.

I agree.  It sounds like Angelos wants to renege on McPhail's handshake -- something that would be unexpected from any source other than Angelos.

Hendry needs to move on.  He still needs to trade Murton for a RH CF/4th OF.  He probably also intends to jettison Marquis (or Dempster).  The longer he waits, the less choice he's going to have as far as trading partners.  Forget Roberts, get the rest of the shuffling done, then "Play Ball!"

I don't necessarily agree...

Let's say Dempster and Marquis BOTH throw well in spring training and so does Lieber.

That makes one of Dempster/Marquis not only expendable, but desirable. You can bet there will be plenty of scouts at Cubs spring training games.

For what this is worth...
The Orioles beat writer (probably with the Sun... I didn't catch his name) was just on XM discussing potential trades.  The question was posed, "Who else besides the Mariners have gotten in to the Bedard talks?" and he didn't mention the Cubs at all.  He also said that all this back and forth talk in the media ("He's being traded," "No, he's staying," etc.) would not affect Bedard, but should certainly be affecting Roberts as he is a "sensitive guy" and "very loyal."

Darn I can't find one from a sports doctor obliterating the idea

This does make my off season go faster.

Jessica
it would make absolutely no sense whatsoever to inject someone's buttocks with Lidocaine.

The ONLY use I could see is if the lidocaine were injected into a sensitive area that was hurting, i.e., elbow, shoulder etc. and even then it might mess up the pitcher's performance since the proprioception (i.e., ability to sense one's body part in space) would be messed up.

This is nonsense. And B12?!  Why on earth would a young, healthy guy take B12.  As far as I can tell, he did not have some sort of nutritional deficiency or megaloblastic anemia.

Clemens is only making himself look stupider.  He should have admitted use citing that he used HGH before it was illegal.  Denying everything highlights the extent of his lies.

I don't get
why Angelos was supposedly so ticked off the word of the trade leaked out when Jones said he had been traded.  Man that guy is one wacko dude.  Trade talk leaks out all the time, especially if a player who has presumably just been traded is talking about it.  There is a whole industry built around talking about baseball.  What is Angelos big holdup here?  He is coming off as more of a micromaning psychopath than ever before, and that's quite a feat considering it's him.  So much for MacPhail and all that autonomy he was supposed to have.

And lucky us in the DC area
We get two of the most meddlesome owners in sports with Angelos and Snyder.  I'm really not sure which one is worse.  Snyder may be better only because he has no problem spending money.  Angelos is meddlesome and cheap.

It's total speculation but I wonder if Angelos is pissed because MacPhail didn't keep him in the loop.  Until this incident, all indications were that MacPhail had autonomy.  The Tejada trade went smoothly but since Angelos didn't want Tejada he probably didn't care.  When MacPhail wants to start touching his favorites in Bedard and Roberts, that's another thing.

by rlpete on Jan 30, 2008 2:36 PM CST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Which tells you...
... that MacPhail shouldn't have taken Angelos at his word when he (Angelos) said MacPhail would have autonomy. Clearly, MacPhail doesn't.

Agreed. Got it Jim.
If it takes Pie to get Bedard, do it.  Send Pie, Marshall, Marquis and cash (for Marquis).  They get two good prospects (Pie & Marshall), Two pitchers, one young and the other can eat innings.

I like the idea of Pie developing, but I see the Cubs missing a good starter.  A rotation of:

Zambrano
Lilly
Bedard
Hill
Lieber/Gallagher/Hart

Would have me excited.  You don't know me, but it takes a lot to create optimism at the start of a season.

Would you make this trade? (if the O's would)
Pie, Colvin, Marshall, Gallagher, Murton and Cedeno for Bedard and Roberts?

You pick up Crisp or another serviceable CF and a you have a bonafide difference maker leadoff hitter and a starting staff of Z, Bedard, Lilly, Hill and whoever at #5. That staff witht he current bullpen can take you to the WS kids; a little too left handed, but very nice.

I'd do it
The problem being there wouldn't be much left to go after Crisp, but other options are available (Fuld, Lofton).  Not great options but I think the difference between Bedard and our 5th starter would far outweigh the difference between Pie and a new/different CF.  The farm system would be gutted but then again we'd be adding two quality players that would improve the big league team.

I wouldn't do it.
As we have discussed incessantly, even if Roberts is acquired, he's not going to lead off. And I think he's only a marginal upgrade to what we already have.

Plus, then you have mortgaged not only your top two OF prospects, you've also given up two good young arms. What if Bedard suddenly comes down with Mark Prior Towel Disease?

Nope. Forget this. Let's move on.

To get both
I think it'd be worth it.  Regardless of who leads off, Roberts, DeRosa and the mystery man in CF all in the same lineup looks more solid than DeRosa, Theriot and Pie -- although I do think Pie could still be very productive this year.

Sure, Bedard could get hurt, but so could any one.

Whatever happens, I hope it's soon . . . someone else mentioned that this is probably a distraction for Roberts; it's got to be for the Cubs, too.

You can't use the injury what-if
That can be applied any player, say Derrek Lee.

What if Derrek Lee injured his wrist in April and was inneffective the rest of the season because of it? Oh wait that already happened and the Cubs tanked.

I don't care about the future. I've waited long enough already. I want a Cubs WS title.

This is such f-ing crap about not giving up prospects. That's why they're called prospects. The Cubs aren't dealing Z, A-Ram, Fonzie or D-Lee.

As-constructed, this team will be hard pressed to even make the WS, let alone win it.

Their pitching staff is largely unchanged from last season and they've only added 2 players, who are decent lineup upgrades from before but not enough to get by good teams in the playoffs with good starting pitching.

Remember the Cubs were swept by the snakes, who were swept by the Rox, who were swept by the BoSox.

Bedard to resign with the O's
On mlb.com they have an article about Angelos' attempt to resign, or extend Bedard. Bedard and his agent wanted 100/7 yrs, McPhail wouldnt go past three, so thats why the trade efforts resumed.

Also, the mentioned Jones' hip problem, which is evidently similar to Albert Belle's, which cost Baltimore tens of millions of dollars for no production whatsoever.

So maybe another team can get in on Bedard if they arent interested in Seattles offer and McPhail wont go past 3 years in a new deal with Bedard

With Angelos attempt to resign Bedard
This obviously shows that he has NO COMMON OR BASEBALL SENSE whatsoever. Bedard basically told Angelos that he wanted to get out of Baltimore. So does he think he can honestly sign him if he doesn't want to stay there? Other teams can sure as heck give him that plus more (ex. Seattle, Reds, Cubs, etc.). Second, you don't pull out of a nearly completed trade at the last minute by trying to do something he should have done from the start, which was resign him. By having him on the market ever since November, its caused him to feel like Baltimore has betrayed him and he doesn't want to stay. And wasn't McPhail told he would have full control over trades, signings, etc.

Congratulations, the worst owner in all of sports: Mr. Peter Angelos of the Baltimore Orioles

Angelos or P.K.?
This is crazy. Wrigely, er, Angelos should understand the responsibilities of the individuals he hires.

Not only is he ruining the opportunity to infuse the club with young talent and cut payroll, he's effectively telling next year's FAs and beyond that Baltimore is a place where a meddling owner will suffocate the responsibilities of his staff and is no place for a player to be free to perform without in-house drama.

Anyway Trembley is part of a "College of Coaches" this year?
