2008 Tales From The VWR

The winning wristband number is 00600.

If you have a wristband that's within a couple hundred numbers of that one (going upward -- if you're just behind it in sequence, you may as well head to your keyboard and telephone, starting at 10 am CT), you should go to Wrigley Field NOW -- you'll be one of the first in line to get tickets when the box office opens at 8 am CT.

There were 20,000 wristbands printed, and approximately 9,000 were distributed, the fewest since they began printing 20,000 in 1999.

For the rest of the day, this thread will serve as your point for complaints, compliments, success stories, abject failure, blowing off steam, whatever you experience on Ticket On-Sale Day. Please don't start dozens of diaries on ticket topics; let's consolidate everything here.

Good luck!

Wristband Scam?
What has been the "starting wristband number" for the past 5 seasons?  This year 600, last year I think is was 603.  And it seems same scenario prior years, all in the hundreds.  What is Cubs Ticket Mgt up to?  Are they ensuring that the picker (John Willimas) pulls from a selected basket that only coantains numbers below 1000?  Are they figuring that if the starting number was, for ex. 8,769 people wouldn't understand how it works (given the avg math apptitude of society)?  I'd be real curious what the starting numbers have been for past 5 years and posted here.

by BobBCB on Feb 22, 2008 6:49 AM CST reply actions

Last year...
... the number was 06779. That's quite a distance from 00600.

I searched through BCB but can't find numbers for 2005 or 2006. Maybe someone else can find them.

True that
Goofus is ALWAYS getting blamed unfairly.  Not many people know it, but that kid was trying to talk Goofus into egging Al's house.  Goofus was right in scolding his friend.  It's clear that Highlights for Children Magazine has it out for poor old Goofus.

The VWR and your moral standards...
... assuming that they failed to "fix" the VWR as well as they did previous years (:: rolls eyes ::), how opposed (or in favor of) "scamming" it would anybody happen to be?

There's bound to be so many others out there doing the same thing, and if Cubs Mgmt hasn't already snatched up %90 of the great field-level seats, even for the games hardly anybody cares about, I seriously doubt that anybody without amazing luck or not doing the same will get any "good" tickets.

I hate to admit it, but last year after waiting in one waiting room for about two hours, I tried out the "scam" to get myself in multiple VWRs and almost immediately (less than five minutes), I happened to get in and buy some nice UD IF Reserved first-row seats for the game on my birthday; is it really all that wrong if you're not using it to just get one game's worth of tickets and not shaft other fans of the Cubbies?

You may know this already...
...but you have to register for the lottery system that the Yankees have set up for all of the "important" games this year to have a chance to buy those tickets through Ticketmaster.  Otherwise, scalpers will be your only alternative.  Registration ends this Sunday.  I'm going to see if I can win in order to grab some July 4th weekend Red Sox - Yanks tickets myself, but I am not holding out any hope.

VWR Tips and Tricks
So, for last years playoff VWR I was able to open around 50 browsers on my RSS reader (net news wire).

I could not to do the same in Firefox, Safari, IE, Opera, etc ... where I was only able to open 1 at a time.

And I got to game 3 in bleachers ... but only cause I had a friend that scored tix.

Tim

by ttagaris on Feb 22, 2008 8:45 AM CST reply actions

Just to throw it out there
If anyone has the ability to get me 2 bleacher seats for Opening Day, I'd be much obliged. I'm doing a walk through of a house I'm having built today at 10am (yeah, bad planning) so I know there won't be any tickets left for Opening Day by the time I get back. My buddy is going to be trying to get tix online but I wouldn't mind a back up plan.

I've got paypal, so I could reimburse immediately and I think that Al might vouch for me as he knows I come from Texas every year for Opening Day.

So, just saying, if anyone has the chance and can get them, I'd be eternally grateful!

That's what I'm on the hunt for. 6 bleacher seats and I a have a shitty wrist band # 07466. Debating if I just head down there anyway in another hour or so - I live few blocks away and have the day off. I really can't imagine that bleacher seats to a  mid-April day game vs the Mets would slel out on day 1 of sales....?

XTown, Home Opener,
... the last games against the Cards/Brewers in September, maybe?

BTW Tagaris, yep, that's the way to do it. Open one VWR, copy the URL, open maybe two or three other instances of the browser, then open about ten tabs in each one(depends on what resolution you're running), paste the URL in all of 'em, then resize the windows so you can see all of 'em and watch the title in the tabs - when it changes to the ticketing windows for two minutes or w/e period of time you have to respond, it will show a different "title" and you're in business.

However, anybody using this method, for the sake of other Cubs fans around the city (nation?), only use this method once and then close the rest of the waiting rooms and make something of your day. Hell, scalp the single set of tickets later for all I care, just don't use this to buy up a whole bunch of sets and hoard them to yourself.

www.getfirefox.com, IE will eat most PCs alive if you try this with 30+ tabs.

by evilsaint on Feb 22, 2008 9:01 AM CST reply actions

Net News Wire (free trial, i believe)
Allows me to line tabs down the right side of my screen in like 1 inch by 1 inch boxes.  You can literally watch them re-load like a picture-in-picture on a television.

Copying and pasting URLs is a tricky proposition for some folks cause you have to get into right-click, properties, etc, iirc.

Gotta do it
Used to be only a window or two, and it got me no where except begging friends for tix or trying SRO the day of game. That sucked big time.

Now its multiple computers, multiple windows on each. I don't like tabs and the way I got IE formatted, each time I open a new window, it's sized like the previous, just large enough to see if its VWR or ticketing. Depending on which computer, there's 40-60 windows open on each. Problem is monitoring each one.

I never, never, never get a good wristband number. Maybe one year, I'll know what it's like to be getting tickets at the old north side ballyard instead of emulating an EE computer geek at home.

Advice for first-timers
Don't give up at an error message.  If you are looking at the seat request page, and it says "Unable to process request" just keep hitting the red "Request Seats" button until it lets you through.  If it says your credit card is in the wrong format, type it in again with spaces between the numbers.

Five friends did wrist bands the numbers all suck.
I can't get in to save my life but my frien in AZ got in for
two games. I suppose many of you will think me greedy because I have season tickets but I always sit in bleachers on weekday
I don't even need weekend end tickets but the Friday's I need
are a particular bitch.

Ok I don't hate you , just  jealous.

Anybody with any comments on section 224?  I usually don't like to be so tucked in under the roof.  I have a feeling that we're in one of the last rows of that section. (just before SRO)

I haven't had a bad experience yet. I've always gone for weekend games and I always get them. But I'm not picky either because I just want to see the cubs.

Although twice while waiting one of my windows went to the Baltimore orioles ticketing and the other one went to Twins ticketing. It was so weird. I couldn't even buy Orioles tickets(not that I wanted to.

It's good to remember
For those of us lucky enough to live in Chicago or very near, I have had excellent luck for years coming back and checking cubs.com for tickets in the days right before a game or even the day of a game. I buy 'em on cubs.com and pick them up at the Will Call window. I'm not sure what happens behind the scenes, but good seats do show up randomly. So it all does not hinge on what's offered today or by the evil scalpers.

Question
In the excitement of trying to get tickets, I seemed to have placed two orders for 4 tickets each to a game against the dodgers (for a total of 8 tickets that game).  Will the allow me to contact them to cancel one, or will they cancel both?  Also, the won't cancel all my orders today will they?  Hopefully someone with experience at this can help.

Superbly Craptastic System!
Who else thinks the system needs a huge overhaul?

I was thinking that there should be separate waiting rooms for each game.  It makes you choose a game to get in after all.  So that way while everyone is fighting over the White Sox and Cardinal series, people like me who only go to one game a year(mostly because this ticketing headache)  can wait in line with their competition for each game.  Not an entire season's worth of people fighting for tickets.

I'm still sitting here and since 10, I've had 3 computers running multiple browsers and multiple windows.  I got in once, and it somehow kicked me out, back into the waiting room.  This ticket fiasco is the main reason I see multiple Brewers games in a year, and maybe 1 Cub game if I'm lucky.

by Raygun on Feb 22, 2008 1:37 PM CST reply actions

The Starting 9 pack
Was a help, because fans could get tickets before today, just not for some of the most in-demand games.

I don't know how feasible it would be to program your idea of a separate VWR for each date, but how about at least a separate VWR for Premium Dates, Regular Dates, and Value Dates?

Free the upper deck!

by cubzfan on Feb 22, 2008 1:59 PM CST up reply actions

I agree
The White Sox have a system like you describe.  It works much better in my opinion.  Of course, the main game I wanted tickets for this year was a Friday game against the Nationals, so I guess I might have just been irritated at having to wait four hours for a game that might not sell out come gameday :)

I managed to get 4 tickets
in section 407 for the Sept 19th game vs the Cards. I am so excited I can't contain myself! They aren't spectacular seats, but I will love not squinting into the sun later in the afternoon! woohoo! Crazier yet is I was only in the VWR for like an hour with one window open. How it happened, I don't know. Maybe it is to make up for how badly I wanted post season tickets and didn't get any with 100 times more effort put into last year.

Those are in my
section.

Depending on seat number, and row, they are very good.

Not "spectacular" - but nothin' but open sky in front and you can see everything on the field.

Give me these anyday over terrace reserved, any rows that start at the girders and behind!

Not only do you have to crane around the poles, you can have an overhang from the ceiling above.

Wait 'til next year. And the next. And the Next. And the next after that too.

Online flaky
Weird... after 4 or so I finally got in on VWR, picked a game, selected bleachers, etc., and entered a credit card, up to the point where it said "click here and your credit card will be charged".  Did so and got a blank screen.  Backspace returned me to that same screen and I clicked again.  Same result.  Tried several times, all the same.  I don't think any of the orders went through (but if they did I'll have a big bill and a LOT of bleacher seats).

So I called the 800 number, got the voice-recognition system, and got all the way through to the end; I have a confirmation #.

CWS 6/22 game
I actually got lucky (?) and scored some nosebleeds to the Sunday game vs. Sox.  Section 538.  I have never sat that high before.  Hopefully we will be able to see.

My question is, does anyone know what the chances of this being a night game are?  The time is listed as TBA and I know they do the flex scheduling thing.  When will they know?

by scalmie on Feb 23, 2008 7:25 AM CST reply actions

They have ...
... up to about 3 weeks before the game to decide. If the Cubs are doing well, I'd say there's a pretty good chance this game will become a night game.

I saw in 538 on opening day a few years ago
The seats don't face the infield, they face straight ahead (so, into right field).  So be prepared to look left.

We were actually looking down on the Sheffield Ave. rooftops.

Had a great view of all the illegally parked cars being towed away, though.
