2008 Community Projections: Carlos Zambrano

Now that the dust has settled from yesterday's ticket sale, let's go back to our projections. All eight of the likely position player starters are now posted -- and I will leave the Kosuke Fukudome and Felix Pie threads open till Monday morning in case you want to add your projection for them -- so let's move on to pitchers.

For starting pitchers, let's use the following categories:

G, GS, IP, H, ER, BB, SO, W, L, ERA, WHIP

Please calculate your ERA and WHIP using the other numbers you post.

So, what say you for Z this year? Is this the year, at age 27 (in June) where he finally has that Cy Young year we all feel he has in him? Or has he established a new level of performance, too many walks, too many pitches, and will just be good, not great?

I'll start -- somewhere in between is where I see him.

... no. Check this schedule page for all the ST telecasts. There is one more that's not listed there: March 15 vs. White Sox, which will be a WGN telecast with the Sox announcers.

This is the year

Zambrano needs to prove he is either a true ACE, or just a number 1 on a team that doesn't have anyone better.

I don't know about specific projections, but I think he will have a very good year.

I have to give you credit

you are incorrigible. The ERA is ridiculous, but at least technically possible, based on Z's stuff (let's be clear, though, it's horrible for a projection).

But those WHIP numbers are pure fantasy. 150 hits in 250 innings? Har har! A .9 WHIP while still walking 75? It is to laugh! Z's good, but he isn't even in the same league as late-nineties Pedro (both in the Al-NL, and abstract senses), which is essentially the caliber of WHIP you're projecting.

You're a decent sideshow at times, but I'm not tipping.

Z Thoughts

Have to hope he will have a better overall season compared to 2007, but I think he has peaked. What he provides is more than helpful to the team even if it is not true "ace" numbers.

I like that he gets a save. Seems to me he should be willing to pitch out of the pen now and then for all the $ he's making. Orel Hershiser used to specialize in getting a save or two a year.

quick question

I did not want to start a new thread over this. Does any one know if these spring games will be televised through direct tv extra innings. Is there more shwon through other teams? let me know please cause i hope i do not miss these spring trainging games.

I do not think....

... spring training games are on Extra Innings. Some MIGHT be on MLB.TV, but that's about it. Between radio and TV, most of the Cubs' ST games are on some kind of broadcast media. I'll try to post the location of each one every day (if available).

It doesn't matter

so much for the final tabulations. The spreadsheet calculates ERA and WHIP from the numbers given. Many people posting predictions miss calculated their numbers, no big deal.

I'm a little behind...

...on my projections, so I'll make this quick. I think the calmer, more focused Big Z we saw at the end of the '07 season is here to stay. Does that mean he'll put up Santana-esque numbers? No, I'm afraid not. But he'll pretty much make across-the-board improvements, though he doesn't quite get back to the sweet WHIP he put up in '05 (1.15) or the stunning ERA he put in '04 (2.75). Ze numbers:

And, FWIW, Big Z hits 4 home runs, breaks one bat over his leg again and does not highlight his hair at any point during the season.
