Around SBN: Knicks Beat Lakers With Familiar Strategy

Open Thread: Cubs vs. Angels, Saturday 3/1, 2:05 CT

While you are deciding how to project Jason Marquis' 2008 season in the thread below this one, you can watch him make his first spring start against the Angels on CSN Chicago. Jered Weaver (you know, the Weaver brother with actual talent) gets the start for the Angels. The game is also available at the MLB.com Mediacenter; according to posts from BCB reader Josh (that you may have missed in another thread), the Angels' radio broadcasts are being made available free during spring training, so even if you don't have access to CSN, you should still be able to hear the game online.

Yesterday, Closer Candidate #1 (Carlos Marmol) threw a scoreless inning, his first of the spring. Today, we should see Candidates #2 and #3 throw for the first time. That article also notes that Bob Brenly will not be broadcasting today due to a "family commitment"; Dan Plesac will sub for Bob.

It's a "Day Off" kind of day -- nearly all the regulars will stay home. Incidentally, watch for MLB to say something to the Cubs about this; visiting teams are supposed to take four regulars to road games. The Mets have already violated this rule this year and might get fined for it.

Finally, there's a new potential bidder for the Cubs (the headline says "two" bidders, but the article only refers to one), and this one is minority-owned.

well couldn't you consider Pie, Marquis, and Soto regulars. The forth could be a player like Cedeno

I think this meets the 4 regulars minimum
Soto and Pie will most likely start for the Cubs this year, and going by what I've read on this board all off-season, Murton and Cedeno will be regulars for the Orioles.

Somewhat related question:  For the regulars who do NOT make the trip (to this game and others throughout the ST season), do they work out at Hohokam or do they go back to Fitch park?  Anyone?  Anyone?

LOL
Seriously, it's supposed to be four regular position players, not including the pitcher.

As far as workouts, I don't know. Some people just get the day off. Others may work out at Ho Ho Kam. I think Fitch Park is now totally taken over by the minor leaguers.

Somewhat OT but...
Al, by virtue of your 4am posts on another thread, does that mean you're back on your usual schedule and more importantly over the Bleed Cubbie Flu?  If so, welcome back to the land of the living...

Yes, I was back at work today. Still not 100%, but up and going again. This flu was a NASTY strain. Check this article from today's Tribune.

"reasonable"
well, i think that the part about players who have a "reasonable" chance of making the team could apply here. in that sense you have pie & fuld (battling it out for cf), cedeno (last year's starting ss), and soto. as a fan this doesn't make me feel ripped off at all. i think it'll be fun to see what we've got in the system. it seems kind of stupid to restrict this sort of thing. seeing the minor leaguers is part of the fun of spring training....

... though i do have to admit that i am excited to actually see fukudome at the plate tomorrow!

by anormal on Mar 1, 2008 12:30 PM CST up reply actions

True enough...
... though I thought it was supposed to be four starters, not just four players with a "reasonable" chance of making the roster. That's still a stretch.

I, too, like seeing some of these players during spring training. But in reality, there are only two (Pie and Soto) out of the expected starting eight, that are in today's lineup.

Plesac....ugh...
The guy can't complete a sentence.  He often rambles from one topic straight to the next without ever making a point.

But other than that...baseball is back on TV...HOORAY!!!  :)

by Neifi Puppy on Mar 1, 2008 11:52 AM CST reply actions

Plesac is great
when I'm looking to take a nap.  There is something about the way he rambles on a bit too long every time he opens his mouth with that slow, monotonous tone of his that I find to be delightfully soporific.  If I had nothing to do this afternoon, I'd crack open a beer and stretch out on the couch, knowing that I'd be sleeping like a baby by the fourth inning.  Damn obligations.

Yee haw!
Lineups be damned, I am glad to finally get the chance to watch some Cubs baseball.  :)

3 regulars
Since Derosa is out for now, Fontenot is a regular in my book. Pie, Soto, Fontenot and Marquis isnt the star power I was hoping to see but its still Cubs baseball.
Is it March yet?

The Cubs
would claim that Murton and Cedeno are regulars.

I'm not buying it either.

Watching the game
At least you can watch. Over here in Europe we get our first game on Wednesday on NASN and of course it features the Yankees. After two of their games we get two Boston games. Then after two Cleveland games there is nothing for a week. Still I suppose it is only spring training and I should be grateful that I can see baseball during the season and that I can listen to the commentary over the internet.

by Stan Cox on Mar 1, 2008 2:04 PM CST up reply actions

Stan
at today's exchange rates, MLB.TV is cheaper than NASN, and you can watch all Cubs games (all MLB games).  Of course, it's on a smaller screen....

Just Angels games
the Angels have screwed up their radio broadcasts (they've sold the time in the afternoon to right wing radio talkers like Michael Savage and can't pre-empt them) so all their spring training games are now free on the internet.

he gave up that home run, but the other hits were all bloop singles, awkward swings, his fastball got up to 96

by dogcatratcheese on Mar 1, 2008 3:06 PM CST reply actions

Wood looked great.
Spring training line scores are utterly meaningless. He had good stuff and was hitting his spots, which is all that matters.

by cwyers on Mar 1, 2008 3:15 PM CST up reply actions

Err..."Great"?
Use use surpurlatives too easily.

I don't think he would say that.

Mediocre, would be appropriate. The announcers (including Pleisac), said the HR pitch had nothing on it and was left in the zone.

Hardly "great".

Wait 'til next year. And the next. And the Next. And the next after that too.

And I was very impressed with Wood's stuff. Keep in mind that this is his first spring outing and adjust your expectations accordingly.

Duly noted
You can have your opinion that Wood was "great" today.

But you're wrong.  ;-)

by TheEman on Mar 1, 2008 3:21 PM CST up reply actions

The HR pitch...
... appeared to be left in the zone, as Plesac said. So Wood made one pitch where he didn't hit his spot. Otherwise I agree with cwyers -- he looked good, had good velocity, just didn't have his command on occasion.

A good first outing, I'd say.
