Open Thread: Cubs vs. Padres, Thursday 3/13, 3:05 CT
SCOTTSDALE, Arizona -- Sunshine -- check. Warm breezes -- check. No dirty piles of snow and ice -- check.
Got in late yesterday, flight delayed due to Southwest's grounding of 8% of its fleet for inspections; the plane that was supposed to be on my route was one of the grounded planes, so SW had to send another one. Give them credit, at least, for addressing this somewhat efficiently -- I can't see United or American being that proactive.
A few headlines to get you going this morning:
- Jay Mariotti on The Trade That Shall Not Be Named. Nothing new here, move along.
- The Wrigley Company is actually considering buying the naming rights for Wrigley Field. So -- maybe we'll have "Wrigley Field at Wrigley Field"?
- Bruce Miles on Aramis Ramirez hustling, something Bruce says he's been unfairly criticized for supposedly not doing in the past:
"Yeah, I was flying on the bases," Ramirez said as he entered the clubhouse afterward and shed a dusty uniform.
Actually, nothing's wrong with this picture, but the fact that Ramirez actually "hustled" into a base might surprise some of his harshest critics.
- Here's a profile of Lou Cella, the man who created the Harry Caray statue in 1999, and who is working on the Ernie Banks statue that will be unveiled on Opening Day. (Incidentally, I stopped by the ballpark to pick up some tickets at Will Call yesterday before I left for Arizona. The area at Clark & Addison is still all torn up -- they've only got 18 days left, and they've still got a lot of work to do.)
- While the Sun-Times today decided to editorialize on a screaming front page about the state's proposed purchase of Wrigley Field (though, as you know, I have changed my mind and agree with them, this seemed less about their righteous outrage and more about selling papers), Blair Kamin, the Tribune's architecture critic, wrote this thoughtful piece about the entire process.
If you are going to be at the game today and want to give me a donation to bring to the Project 3000 fundraiser tonight, find me on the LF lawn near the scoreboard, and make out your check to "Project 3000".
Discuss amongst yourselves.

The last I read
This, I think, is understandable, and will correct itself. I imagine it is unusual for a natural, gifted athlete like Soriano to learn to come back from an injury and go full tilt.

Well...
Yeah, I'm worried. The fact that Piniella is jiggering the top of the lineup in this manner is signal something isn't right. Soriano strongly prefers the lead-off spot and has forever produced best in that spot. You don't "experiment" with moving a franchise player like him down in the order just for the heck of it.

"Started to incur leg problems"???
If you have evidence to the contrary, please present it. And don't cite one instance of a spring training lineup change as "evidence".

Almost everything in spring training...
"We want to keep him in the lineup," Piniella said Wednesday. "Last year, he was out a few times with the leg pulls. If you talk to him now, he's 80, 85 percent. Put it this way -- out of the two-hole, it might be easier for him to not have to run as much. We're just going to look at it."
Piniella didn't tell Soriano about the change until they were in the dugout before Wednesday's game against the Rangers, a 5-4 Texas win. The Cubs medical staff has suggested such a switch as well. Soriano tried to run on his own on Tuesday and was thrown out.
Emphasis added.
I'm pretty sure this means the Cubs are going to look at moving Soriano off the leadoff spot, just like they moved him back to left field. Now, does that mean that Ryan Theriot will spend the whole season leading off?
Let's just say, I hope not.
But there's more going on here than it seems at first blush, I think.

sure...
One is routine. Nothing to panic over. The other is a massive undertaking with a high cost, and us usually unexpected, creating lots of panic.
Since the trainers in Arizona aren't running around like the Keystone Kops, I'm betting is the former -- routine -- rather than the latter -- PANIC!

With more respect...
- you've framed everything in ST as if it were happening in the regular season
- made mountains out of molehills regarding lineups that may or may not come to pass
- generally scolded those of us who have a positive outlook about the team in general
- bemoaned the as yet unconfirmed "bad things" that you say are happening

And just so no one thinks...
"We have reached a fascinating juncture, then, as baseball observers. Facing Cubdom is an ethical debate far removed from the usual beertap arguments, such as when a manager should pull a starting pitcher or if the girl in the halter top looks better than the girl in the t-shirt. What is more important: (a) trying to win your first World Series in 100 years by acquiring an elite leadoff hitter and second baseman, which would let Lou Piniella drop Alfonso Soriano to third in the batting order and create a powerful lineup; or (b) maintaining integrity as an organization during a scandalous period in baseball history?
I choose integrity."
Sure you do Jay.

My thoughts...
I think Soriano should be lower in the order than #2 regardless of his health status.
I really like Harry's statue from the knees up, not so certain how I feel about the area below that. Hopefully Ernie Banks' is classy like that but good below the knees too.

Unfortunately for them...
Edmonds is hurt (calf) again.
They have NO IDEA who the LF will be yet.
Giles is always on again/off again and needs days off during the regular season. So the entire outfield is a coin toss for them right now.

I know there's others here that don't want that deal to happen and thats fine.

Trib and Sun-Times articles
Only for about 1 paragraph did I have any objection with what the Sun-Times wrote. Yes, I'm sure that the Sun-Times would stick it to the Trib whenever they get the chance, but in this case, they are absolutely right. I don't care if the Sun-Times did it to serve their own self-interest, but the fact remains that the public's interest was well served by that article. I'm grateful there will be more which, hopefully, will go to the heart of why IL is trying to go forward with this scam at such a precarious time from a tax perspective.

Fick said the fine was $25,000.
In a separate disciplinary move, Atlanta manager Bobby Cox also fined Fick. The amount of that fine was not disclosed.
Although Fick was the opposite of apologetic after Saturday's game, he did try to explain himself before Sunday's Game 5.
"It's an elimination game and you've got to do what you've got to do," Fick said in a profanity-laced tirade Saturday. "I'm not saying I did it on purpose. But it's ... baseball."

Does this make Lohse their current #1?
I think the astros line up and thier home park will eek out a couple more wins than the cards. but I don't think we'll be paying much serious attention to either team other than to raid a roster in a trade.

ERA+
100-07
78-06
106-05
89-04
Marquis
101-07
74-06
102-05
115-04
So ERA+ wise these guys are also very simliar pitchers. The Cardinals are getting him at 1y 4-5m so he's a much better bargin then Marquis was. But Hendry had money to burn last year and needed a innings eating SP so Marquis got lucky to get his contract. Sadly now we have better SP options so we want to get rid of that contract, and will probably have to eat a few million to do it.

I think it's a fluke because all spring training..
And Murton's having roughly the same spring as Theriot, and you hardly hear anything about it. I'm of the mind that you're very unlikely to learn something new about a player in spring training. It is what it is.

Theriot
Theriot doesn't work the count as many as most hitters on the team. But Theriot was third on the team in walks last year.(behind Lee/DeRosa) Hopefully he can improve on that some more and improve his batting average this year as well.

You can't just quote minor league stats...
2006, AAA:.262/.307/.323
2005, AA: .258/.309/.325
Those are translated stats that reflect how players from those levels tended to perform in the majors. I don't have translations for 2004 because nobody from High-A ball goes straight to the majors.
He is a 28-year-old with mediocre stats, both at the major and minor league levels. He is not young; there's no reason to expect him to develop - most ballplayers are at their peak right around ages 27-29.
I have him slated to show modest improvement over last season, given the projections I've seen. But I don't think that sort of improvement is enough to make up for his numerous deficiencies offensively.

It's not impossible.
What that means is that there's an 70%-80% chance that he won't perform that well. And keep in mind that there's also room for him to perform significantly worse than projected as well. You can't talk about upside risk without ignoring downside risk.
I'm not denying that chance is there; I just don't see why it's so worthwhile to gamble on it.
