Open Thread: Cubs vs. White Sox, Saturday 3/15, 3:05 CT

SCOTTSDALE, Arizona -- While Kosuke Fukudome travels to Tucson with the ballclub today, angry with himself for his .226 average so far and hoping to improve, Alfonso Soriano, Aramis Ramirez and Derrek Lee will stay behind in Mesa and get some extra AB's in minor league games.

Pitching rotation update: Paul Sullivan tells us that Ryan Dempster's bad day yesterday doesn't mean he's out of the rotation, but Bruce Miles says that it's time for Rich Hill to step up and pitch like he did a year ago, which he hasn't done so far this spring (7.04 spring ERA).

Hill will get his next chance this afternoon; he'll face the White Sox' Nick Masset. Masset pitched against the Cubs last May 20 at Wrigley Field and really got caught up in the intensity of the rivalry. The White Sox website says that their two new high-priced relievers, Octavio Dotel and Scott Linebrink, will also throw today. No such information on the Cubs website -- once again, a plea to you, Carrie: can we have this info?

There are many media options today. The game is televised via WGN -- with the Sox announcers. It's also on both teams' flagship stations, WGN and the Score, and at the MLB.com Mediacenter.

MLB.com Gameday (Yes, I checked both the teams and the date today. This link will absolutely, positively work.)

Discuss amongst yourselves.

Alex Cintron
I hope we don't see a repeat of his type of injury again.  He seemed to be making a solid bid to stick to our 25 man roster and return to Chicago.

Does this injury negate that?  Can he be DL'd and stick around?  Or, does he have to accept a minor league assignment?  Can he ask for his release?

It seems likely that he's got a good shot to land on somebody's MLB roster. I don't know that the Cubs have the patience right now to keep him, but every roster is feeling the crunch of figuring out a team to go north with.

Do you think the Cubs will keep him around if he's misses the rest of the spring?

One of the articles this morning
said the injury was not serious. If so, and he starts playing again soon and at the same level of performance so far, I think he's a shoo-in to make the team.

Lou says Cintron could've come along today, but he's a little sore.

Still, is he going to make the team?  Does he have to accept a minor league deal?

He's already accepted a minor league deal.
The Cubs could add him to the 40-man if he keeps it up, though.

this is my first look at him today.  Dude's big and from that first at bat, can definitely stroke it.  Assuming he can't play anywhere but first, I hope Hendry can find someone who realizes how good he could be.

Hoff-POWER!
2 out double to the wall, but is stranded at first as Ward grounds out to end top of the 1st.

I really really like this guy.  Supposedly he's not that great with the glove, but the few games I saw this week, his defense looked fine.  And his bat is smokin'!!!  Probably no place for him here, but I would think/hope he's becoming a decent trade chit for Hendry to use as needed.

by DGU on Mar 15, 2008 3:32 PM CDT reply actions

No.
Hendry has said on multiple occasions one of Fuld/Pie is going to AAA; Lou says that Pie's got the center field job, barring a trade. Sam Fuld is going to Des Moines.

by cwyers on Mar 15, 2008 3:34 PM CDT up reply actions

No
Hendry will do something to sure up CF. I could care less about 2nd base, but a player like Payton or Crisp would be far more valuable to us, than you know who. I would rather see E Pat come up with the club than, but his downfall is being left handed like everyone else. Pat hits better than Fuld, but we all know that Lou likes Fuld a lot more than Pat, so should be interesting.

by louslovechild on Mar 15, 2008 3:37 PM CDT up reply actions

Crisp
Being on the East Coast I've seen him play a lot more than perhaps most people on here.

Defensively he was amazing.  I think a lot of people in Chicago might be impressed at the runs he could save us especially in late innings.

by ak123 on Mar 15, 2008 3:38 PM CDT up reply actions

Crisp is good defensively...
...but I think our outfield starters are all very good defensively as well, so a late-inning defensive replacement isn't as useful to us as it would be to, say, Cincinatti. And I'm confident Pie is a better defender than Crisp this season.

Crisp can't get on the field right now anyway so it doesn't matter. Teams don't trade for players who can't make the field.

by cwyers on Mar 15, 2008 3:41 PM CDT up reply actions

Nothing
No counter argument from me on that one!

by ak123 on Mar 15, 2008 3:43 PM CDT up reply actions

Agree
His bat isnt what we would like, in fact I would go as far to say that it isnt as good as Pie's, but he can go after it like few can.

MLBTR says that the Sox are talking to Oakland about moving Crisp out West. Why would that make sense? They are rebuilding, and his contract is not a "rebuilding" type of a deal.

by ak123 on Mar 15, 2008 3:46 PM CDT up reply actions

The Cubs are heavily scouted right now...
...because not a lot of teams have the kind of pitching surplus - and obvious desire to make trades - that the Cubs have.

With guys like Murton, though, I bet most scouts have already made up their mind about him; whether they think he's good or bad defensively, I seriously doubt one catch will change their minds.

by cwyers on Mar 15, 2008 3:47 PM CDT up reply actions

He is a quality player
He isnt the smartest ball player, which is why Lou isnt so fond of him, but he has skills that could help a ball club. He is limited defensively, but teams that follow the "stat geek" mentality should be in love with his bat.

Oh, missed this...

Actually my comment, "what exactly has Jim Hendry done with greater resources at his disposal and (purportedly) a better farm system" was meant more as a question. It's a question that Cubbie fans love to dodge and rarely (if ever) have addressed here when I've posted that question in response to the perpetual attacks on Kenny Williams by Cubbie fans here.

So, let's make it a question: What exactly has Jim Hendry done with greater resources at his disposal and (purportedly) a better farm system?

In your bitter jealous envy of the World Champion White Sox you love to rip everything about the Sox while glossing over the sorry history of your sorry franchise.

If you're going to rip Williams for post '05, what do you have to say about the the World Championship team he assembled?

Remember too that it was all the rage (and Al was not immune) in Cubbie-land to rip the moves KW made in advance of the '05 season.

Of course you glossed over in your "bland assertion" that KW took a team that won 83 games in '04 and built it into a team that won 99 games and then 90 games.

* Freddy Garcia for garbage (but was heckled by Cubbie fans like you).
* Pods. & Vizcaino (this particular trade inspired all kinds of mockery from Cubbie fans. Al in fact pointed at this trade and said the Sox would be lucky to win 70 games.)
* AJ Pierzinski, FA signing (ripped too by Cubbie fans clamoring for Michael Barrett.)
* Iguchi, FA signing
* Dye (Cubbie fans were saying that their forgettable RF pick-up that year was better than the Dye acquisition. Dye was the '05 World Series MVP.)
* Geoff Blum for nothing
* Contreras for Loiaza
* Orlando Hernandez FA signing
* Bobby Jenks, picked up from waivers
* Neil Cotts, an earlier acquisition of KW's.

The '05 team that won 99 games and went 11-1 in the post-season, sweeping the World Series was a team built almost top to bottom by Kenny Williams.

Kenny Williams will of course have to answer for what's happened afterward but he's done something that you've never seen a Cubbie GM do - build a World Champion - hence your hate.

"...the Sox ... may be even more marginal after the Cubs win the 2007 World Series." - Cubbie fan "Joe Alberti" as posted in the White Sox NG on 9/21/2007.

I guess that makes Ozzie
a meshugener.

I always thought of meshugenuh
as an adjective, not a noun. At least that's how my grandma used it.

I've heard it used this way
by friends just to mean a crazy man, but perhaps you're right.

I'm not an expert in Yiddish
but in Hebrew, meshugah is "crazy", and so I would guess in Yiddish it is the same.  The word "meshugeneh" is probably a Yiddishism for "a crazy man".

Kenny Williams
Did he just say Swisher will help them compete for the division title?

Is he serious or delusional?

Aug 15 - Ted Lilly walked by the lineup card and said to nobody in particular "I can't believe I'm batting 9th again".

by mweil on Mar 15, 2008 4:11 PM CDT reply actions

Yes.
He's serious about being delusional.

by cwyers on Mar 15, 2008 4:14 PM CDT up reply actions

Don't forget...
... his comment about the Cabrera/Willis trade, which made the Tigers "more competitive" with them.

Kenny Williams IS delusional.

Fast is not one of them.

Nick Swisher swishes on one and falls down
on a pitch from Les Walrond, no less.  I hope Swisher strikes out and shuts Hawk up.

Just came inside...
... from glorious 70-degree sunshine to see that performance. Should have stayed outdoors.

Whatever the deadline is for players to be cut without paying more than part of their salary, I imagine Cotts is going to qualify for that treatment. I think he's done.

Props to Hawk and DJ
Not my fave listen either and total homers esp. Hawk but when they do talk baseball they do occasionally entertain and make good points.

Talking about No. 2 hitter today. Hawk said No. 2 hitter has more responsibilities than anyone in lineup, and usually talk to player before moving him to that spot. Sox made a great run one year when moved Carlton Fisk to that spot.

DJ chimed in that he didn't think Soriano was capable of making the adjustments to the 2-Hole.

Don't think you'd hear the latter comment on a Cub broadcast!!

Hawk was saying how valuable Cotts was to the Sox championship run. How can somebody go from being that good to this bad so soon? Happens all the time....

by writerinwrigley on Mar 15, 2008 8:49 PM CDT reply actions

Cotts...
...it's really too bad to see how he's fallen off.  Cotts was one Cubbie I was really rooting for.  Hopefully Cotts turns things around, if not with the Cubbies then somewhere else.
