What Do You Do For A Living?

I spend A LOT of time reading BCB at work. Sometimes I feel guilty about it, not because I'm shorting my boss (me), but because my productivity level dwindles enough during Cubs regular season, and sites like this just exacerbates the situation.

So what's the solution? I have concluded that the solution is NOT cutting down time spent reading articles and posting to diaries, etc. The solution is to see if we can maybe make a few work-related connections amongst ourselves in this online community. Maybe if we all shared what we did for a living, people would be interested in networking with each other outside the forum with regards to sharing business, referrals, services, etc.

Please feel free to share in this diary. I can't wait for sarcastic replies from the unemployed.

This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of SB Nation or Al Yellon, managing editor (unless it's a FanPost posted by Al). FanPost opinions are valued expressions of opinion by passionate and knowledgeable baseball fans.

And this is my first post here. I have been reading since the playoffs last year and recently made an account. Thanks for the great site Al!

Hey Kzoo Cub Fan

I work for a rapidly growing IT firm out of Lansing and we are hiring a Tech in Kalamazoo. Being a Cub fan is a great qualification as far as I concerned, and this is, after all, the stated goal of this post. Would like to get together but I’m not sure how??

Ah, Kalamazoo..
I live near Ft. Wayne, Indiana. How's about Lansing Lugnuts vs. Fort Wayne Wizards rivalry?

I work for a factory in the engineering field. I set up machines initally and make sure they run right for the operators AND customers.

Can't wait for the Cubs in '08!!!

Yeah, I've been thinking about blocking this site from my work computer. I spend entirely too much time refreshing diaries just to read the most recent post. This site is too addictive.

I will be in Baltimore
at the end of April for the NAEMD Navigator conference. I have never been out that way. I am going with a couple other dispatchers as well. We were interested in a sightseeing type tour of DC. We don't have enough time to tour every building in DC, but would like to find something that would take us past the major ones. Any ideas or suggestions? Also, will the cherry trees be blooming around this time? I hear that is beautiful.

Suggestions
Good timing because the cherry blossoms bloom around the first week of April.  If you go to the National Mall, which is were the cherry blossoms are, you have access to many monuments.  If you like to walk, you can walk to the Jefferson Monument, the Washington Monument, the Lincoln Memorial, the Vietnam Wall Memorial, and several others.

Also, you should really try to get to the Arlington Cemetary.  There is so much history there and the Changing of the Guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier is a must see.  Also, the Iwo Jima memorial is near the cemetary.  Just some ideas for you.  It really is a beautiful city.

Nice Teles...
I'm on my second.  Just an MIM - nothing fancy, but I've set it up nicely and it sounds good.  The first, which I sold (moment of insanity) quite a few years ago, was a Thinline I hot-rodded rather interestingly.  LP "mini-bucker" at the neck, DiMarzio Strat PU in the middle, full-size humbucker at the replacement Tune-o-matic bridge, Schaller tuners, brass nut, and some "interesting" tone control circuitry.

And that's not all - the one I really regret selling at the same time was an old Guild Bluesbird, with P-90s.  I'll likely never see anything quite like that again.  Well, maybe, got a project in mind...

"Religious nut"
is tongue in cheek.  If the guy threatened to do harm to people who disagree with him, he's just a plain old nut who distorts religion to fit his own ideas as part of his nuttery.

I disassociate myself with harming, assaulting, manipulating, etc. people in any way (physical, verbal, psychological) and I especially am opposed to using religion as an excuse for such activities.

I suppose what I was trying to get across (unsuccessfully, I admit) is that not all nuts are religious people; not all religious people are nuts.  The distinction should be gently made.

By the way, I read a post of yours on the San Diego Padres site about "how to make fun of Cubs fans."  Your picture of Prior was hilarious.

I live in NYC for the auditions but travel around the state. Each job is usually no more than 6-8 weeks.  Began my career a couple of years ago so I am an not traveling full time yet but here and there. Sang with Des Moines Opera, El Paso Opera, New York Opera, Empire Opera and that does not count the Symphony concert gigs.  Hopefully in the next year or two I will have jobs lines up for about 8-9 months out of the year (that is about the normal for a full time opera singer)

Well...
...I suppose it depends upon your definition of great. :-)  Some of the more well-known jazz clubs, e.g., the Blue Note, are not known for being particularly receptive to free jazz, my main interest (as one might infer from my screen name).  But thankfully there are other venues that are very nice to play in.

A couple years back when touring the midwest, I stopped in Chicago and played at the Empty Bottle.  It was a fun gig, but it was bad timing and not a lot of people showed up, which led us to henceforth refer to the Empty Bottle as the Empty Jazz Club.

Portable Vendor, Wrigley Field, Sect. 229
Great news!!  I heard today I'm switching back to Bud/Bud Lite after two down years w/ Old Style.  My prefs are to drink old style over bud; but, as a profiteer, get your bud lite here.  if that ain't your thing, we'll still have PBR and becks, hot dogs, pop, etc.

Come visit!!  However, please be patient in April and May... it's always hard to count out bills when I can't feel my fingers.

in the offseason, i'm finishing prereqs for a physician assistant program.  when not at the ball park this summer, i'll be riding around in an ambulance.

BTW, peanut vendors can get suspended/fired for throwing peanuts.  Apparently, the corners of the bags are "sharp" and can cause eye damage.  I saw a vendor once throwing hotdogs 25-30 feet, watching as they unwrapped in the air.  He got in trouble, too.

National team
Hey, that's interesting that you know those guys. I know them in passing because Irish baseball is so small, but I was only involved in youth baseball until recently (last year I started playing on our adult "B" team as a Julio Franco type veteran). I was supposed to be interviewed for the Emerald Diamond, but the shoot was rained out (go figure). I did go along on a trip the national team took to the US in 2001 as a development tour, because they took a youth team with them and my son was involved.

Sure it rains a lot, but you're the one with the plane, so I thought you could check the weather forecasts and radar before you make the trip!

I need to find an AM radio that works inside a large office.....anyone?

by cozmotaylor on Mar 7, 2008 1:18 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

You basically have 3 choices
1. roof antenna and drop the feed line (kind of what's used for cable) to your area where you can plug into an external antenna port on the radio.

-or-

  1. roof antenna, drop the feed line down to your office with an additional amplifier and antenna.
  2. putting a kick-ass amplifier on the front end of your radio that boosts the signal more than a thousand-fold (30dB).
You may be screwed. Propogation characteristics of AM style signals and frequencies restrict reception where line of sight paths are interrupted. This is why going under bridges or through tunnels screws up your AM but not your FM.

I stream ESPN1000 for the very same reason you're having trouble.

With the amount of data we pass through the network here (within or through the firewalls), a few kbps data rate doesn't even register on the network loading meters.

one of the most commented in diaries on the site that doesn't involve arguing. I think it's because deep down, people, including many that don't post often (including me), like to talk about themselves.  The only other example of a heavily commented, non-argumentative (and non-game thread) diary that I can think of is the Why We Are Here diary--which corroborates my little hypothesis.

The cool thing about my job is that I have a greater understanding of all the behind the scenes stuff from the tone when you pick up a phone or how that text message or phone call gets to its recipient to how wireless and landline companies spend, save and make money. I’ve even personally seen CO’s (central office) where miles of large underground fiber optic and coax cable meets up.

See, told you it was boring.

Go ahead, Z me.

Rubber Stamps

I make rubber stamps. Not very exciting, so I need a daily Cubs victory to make my day complete.

What kind of stamps?

Like, art stamps? (My wife does a lot of “stamp art”.) Or like the stamps one would use to endorse a check or fill out a return address?

by ChipSet on May 31, 2008 9:09 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Both ...

We make a lot of art stamps, but not our own line. We’ll take a person’s artwork and convert it to stamps for them to resell. We also do a lot of “business” stamps like return address and check endorsement.

Currently unemployed and feebly looking for work. I reside in Aurora, IL and am considering relocating to points unknown. If anyone needs a broken down EE specializing in industrial controls, I’m your man. Will consider any job offer that includes mandatory sexual harassment. (Of me, of course)

Self Employed

I have a sole-proprietor computer repair business, specializing in Data Recovery and small business networks. My best clients are Attorneys, Clinics, and Real Estate Agents. But I also take care of what I consider to be “computer innocents” such as little old ladies and grumpy old men.

I disagree with the poster above who stated that you can’t get up to date info on the Cubs up here in Fairbanks, Alaska. We have had great Cable TV and internet service up here for a long time now, and there are a huge number of cubs fans up here, especially since 1984. I have been following the cubs since I was a kid in the 1950s and 1960s.

I'm sorry. You lose 500 BCB points for that move.
