Around SBN: Doug Flutie's Hail Mary, And Why College Sports Matter

Open Thread: Cubs vs. Mariners, Friday 3/7, 2:05 CT

Hang in there. After today, the Cubs' next three games will all be televised (Saturday and Sunday on WGN, Monday on CSN; the Sunday and Monday games are also on MLB.TV), so you'll be able to follow most of the action.

Mark DeRosa is champing at the bit to start playing. The team wants him to take live BP first; DeRo says:

"If I'm going to struggle, this is the time to struggle in these games," DeRosa said. "I'm not too concerned about what my batting average is going to be in Spring Training. I'd rather be baptized by fire and get after it."

I like that attitude.

Kerry Wood's been throwing 98 MPH. Gordon Wittenmyer of the Sun-Times asked Wood:

And the last time he threw 98 in the spring?

"Probably, uh, never."

Not since 1998, anyway. That spring I sat for one of Wood's starts behind one of the scouts with a radar gun. I wanted to see for myself how fast Wood was throwing. The gun consistently showed between 96 and 98.

Wood's got to be the front-runner for closer now. It makes the most sense -- he's got the velocity and the mentality, and both Carlos Marmol and Bob Howry seem better suited for setup work. This could work out to be the best late-inning bullpen trio the Cubs have had in, well, maybe ever.

Bruce Miles writes today about something we've all seen: Lou Piniella's competitive fire.

Today's game is available at the MLB.com Mediacenter -- you'll hear the Mariners announcers via KOMO radio. Ted Lilly gets the start for the Cubs; Carlos Silva will go for Seattle. Left-handers Ryan Rowland-Smith and Eric O'Flaherty and right-handers R.A. Dickey and Sean Green are also scheduled to throw for Seattle. The latter info is from the Mariners website; I'm not sure why the Cubs website doesn't give this additional info. (Carrie Muskat? Are you listening?) Incidentally, Dickey can be fun to watch. He's a knuckleballer. A couple of years ago, he threw six shutout innings, allowing three hits, in a spring game vs. the Cubs, when he was with the Rangers.

Lineups, courtesy of Bruce Miles:

Bruce also tells me that Alfonso Soriano is scheduled to return to the lineup tomorrow.

THANKS, AL!

I am always pleased when I see someone has used the (proper) phrase "champing at the bit"!

Indeed!
Most people say "chomping."

And now for something completely different...
Sure this is offtopic and everything, but I was so shocked that I've been using that wrong for so many years, I looked it up on Wikipedia:
Champing at the bit, or chomping at the bit refers to a tendency of some horses, when impatient or nervous, and especially if being held back by their riders, to chew on the bit, often salivating excessively. This behavior is sometimes accompanied by head-tossing or pawing at the ground. Because this behavior was most often seen by the general public in horses who were anxious to begin a horse race in the days before the invention of the starting gate, the term has become popular in everyday speech to refer to a person who is anxious to get started or to do something. Because some impatient horses, when held back, would also occasionally rear, a related phrase, "raring to go," is also derived from observations of equine behavior.

Think about it:

Soriano

That's a very strong core of hitters.

Indeed
And when you add scrappy guys like Theriot and DeRosa, as well as a strong offensive catcher (let's hope) in Soto, the lineup looks very impressive. Also, I know everyone wants to trade him and he hasn't looked good off the bench in the past, but Murton does have solid hitting ability too and could be of use as a pinch hitter if he stays.

Scrappy guys...?
Aren't you over this yet?

Scrappy does not equal "good hitter".

You know he was near the bottom for SS in the league last year, OBP/AVG. ?

HE is scrappy - but unfortunately, all we got.

Personally, he is a fantastic kid, but would be great as a spot starter/utility guy. This would be his role on most teams that are in contention, imo.

Wait 'til next year. And the next. And the Next. And the next after that too.

Al - most

by TheEman on Mar 7, 2008 12:22 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

I'd compare them...
they are very similar players.  Good plate discipline, scrappy, don't strike out much, don't have any power, arm considered well below average for SS.  Similar career AVG/OBP/SLG numbers.

That's not to say anything positive about Theriot.  Eckstein has had the slightly better career, but neither is a good player.  Eckstein is highly overrated.

by SouthernCub on Mar 7, 2008 12:27 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Eckstein is wildly overrated...
...but that doesn't mean he's not a good ballplayer.

In fact, this comparison is rather unfair to Eckstein. Theriot is a bad baseball player. My Wins Above Replacement chart for shortstops as Eckstein at a full win plus change over Theriot for next season; Eckstein is on the downward slope of his career and Theriot is right at this prime. It's really not a fair comparison.

by cwyers on Mar 7, 2008 12:36 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

I wouldn't say
theriot is a BAD baseball player....first off, ive seen many worse baseball players play in wrigley field over the past ten years. He also still could take a step forward from his rookie year.

by cubsmania on Mar 7, 2008 1:36 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Spiezio has two rings too...
that doesn't make him a good baseball player.  Eckstein has two rings, but is a below-average baseball player.  He needs to thank Pujols, Carpenter, Reyes, Suppan, and Curtis Granderson for his second ring, and Franky K, Lackey, Washburn, Glaus, and others for his first ring.

Now, I am just basing this as of what he has done to this point in his "career". We'll see. At the very least, if Lou hits him 7th, and he plays a competent SS, we should be ok, imo.

Wait 'til next year. And the next. And the Next. And the next after that too.

by TheEman on Mar 7, 2008 12:29 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

That's a list of fielding percentage...
and fielding percentage is widely considered a poor measure of fielding skill, as it can penalize range.  When range is considered, Theriot tops Eckstein pretty handily.

I'm not saying Theriot is a good player.  He's not.  But at least use reasonable measures of defense.

by SouthernCub on Mar 7, 2008 12:32 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Eckstein is a better defender than Theriot...
...if you look at the Zone Rating data and remember to regress to the mean. Eckstein had an off year last season, but has been consistantly one of the better shortstops under UZR - plus 17 runs in 2006, plus 7 in 2005. He was five runs under Theriot in the first half of 2007; Theriot was at zero. Again: half-season, and regress to the mean.

by cwyers on Mar 7, 2008 12:39 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

How about
we give Theriot more time before we label him after one year in the big leagues. How many guys improved offensivly and defensivly after their first full year? Last he got thrown over at SS midseason after playing much more 2b over the last two years. Who says Theriot can't improve at SS after working on somethings this offseason and getting himself ready for the postion? Offensivly Theriot was Eckstein with better speed going into September. Before last year he never played many games over 120 games, oddly enough his struggles happen in his final 25 games or so of the season. Theriot admiited he was tired and got himself and said even in the minors he didn't play that much ever. In Theriot last three minor league seasons he was 365-367 OBP guy. So I'm not gonna label this guy a bad player yet, because I don't think he will be bad player. If he can become a 280-290,340-350 hitter with 30-40 SB potential at his postion. Sure it's still a long shot he improves that much, but I hate labeling a guy before he gets a chance or after one year.

by cubsfan25 on Mar 7, 2008 1:55 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

As I stated above
I like Theriot. And - he's all we have to play the position realistically now. If Roberts comes, DeRo could get SOME time there, but at least it would force LOU to play Ryan down in the lineup.

It is possible he's a late bloomer and will achieve to the numbers you cite.

I HOPE he does. We ALL HOPE he succeeds as well as all of the players we enjoy.

Wait 'til next year. And the next. And the Next. And the next after that too.

by TheEman on Mar 7, 2008 12:58 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

There's no reason to think that.
Shortstops rely largely on their speed and range to get to balls, and that starts to fall off... pretty much as soon as they get into the majors. I think the peak age for defense at shortstop is 22 years old.

I agree about the rings....
...I tend to think people get far too hung up on whether a players career is validated by winning a championship or two.

Winning a championship in team sports has a heck of a lot more to do with the TEAM, as opposed to what one player can do.

Some players get lucky and play on many teams that are well balanced and they win championships.  Others, get stuck on teams that are missing pieces, and never win anything despite having great careers.

Let me know
when the Cubs get a real lead-off hitter, someone that actually gets on base on a regular basis. The Cubs line-up is essentially the same one that got them swept in 3 games against Arizona in the playoffs except for Fukedome. It would be great to make it to the playoffs but how about putting a team on the field that can actually win the World Series. If Soriano is the lead-off hitter this will not happen!

Wood & Marmol
I don't know where this perception comes from that Marmol isn't suited to the role.  Yeah, he struggled in his two postseason appearances, so people start to say he can't handle pressure.  But he was also a young pitcher who had been worked extensively all season.  By all accounts he closed and did quite well in the Caribbean league.  He's certainly got the stuff to be a closer -- so what is it based on when people say he lacks the makeup?  Doesn't fly for me.

On Wood, god bless him, love the guy.  But if anything worries me its the thought of him pitching the 9th on back-to-back-to-back days in the April cold.  Not saying they should treat him with kid gloves, but you have to be a little careful with the guy.  Its not about whether he can throw 98, but whether he can throw anywhere in the 90s and still make 50-60 appearances.

re
clearly there are some excellent pitchers thats true of -- LaTroy Hawkins was dominant as a set up pitcher, terrible as a closer.  Octavio Dotel the same way in Houston.

But it seems to me that closer is a much more important role, so even if he is a little better as a set up man but still excellent as a closer, you want him in the 9th.  if he's a hawkins/dotel type who implodes under pressure, then of course use him in the 8th.

My only point is we don't yet know whether he can be an effective closer, and its worth trying to find out.

"All We Are Saying, Is Give Pie(ace) a Chance" -- John Lennon

by Orval Overall on Mar 7, 2008 12:14 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

I disagree...
the closer role is much less important than the fireman role in the 6th/7th with runners on when the game is on the line.  Using Marmol in those spots (where he was fantastic last year) means more save opportunities for the closer.  And coming in with nobody on in the 9th is a LOT easier than coming in with runners on base needing a big out.

by SouthernCub on Mar 7, 2008 12:29 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

plus
woody is a good closer candidate...its not like were running wuertz out to be the closer instead of marmol.

by cubsmania on Mar 7, 2008 1:37 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

I think he is
better as a set up guy with this team. We are lucky to have a Wood possibly to close. This will keep Marmol blowing them away in the 7th or 8th.

What I am saying is it is nice not to have to put Marmol in the closer's roll out of necessity

"You can't take life to seriously, you don't get out of it alive"

by wild bill on Mar 7, 2008 2:21 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Plus...
...and I can't state this with enough force, it suits the Cubs best for Wood to be the closer with Marmol and Howry as set-up men.  Closers generally don't have a "quick" warm-up period, so Wood's arm would be best protected in the closer role.  And given the money invested in Wood v. Marmol and Howry, the return on investment is best if Wood wins the closer position. And keeping Marmol's save numbers down might keep his arbitration number lower in the future (face it - middle relievers don't have as high an arbitration value as closers).

Now, that's not to say that the best man for the job shouldn't be closer because of arm concerns or financial considerations with the other candidates....it's just to say that IF Wood wins the closer battle, these other goals are ALSO served.

by Chadnudj on Mar 7, 2008 2:28 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

When Wood can throw 3 days in a row
Then he would be a closer a candidate but just because he can throw 98 mph doesn't make him a closer. Hence Kyle Farnsworth: At least Marmol has had some experience closing in Winter Ball. This is more experience than Wood has.

The benefit of keeping Marmol in the set-up role is he can come in the 6th inning and pitch two innings as a bridge to the 8th inning as for Wood or Howry they would be better suited to pitch one inning only.

A comment on the role of the closer...
I see the closer as the one pitcher on your staff who will never get pulled in the middle of an inning.  That means if your closer walks the first two batters followed by a sac bunt, you've got to be comfortable leaving him in there to make or break, as there will be no one warming up in the pen.  So given that scenario, who would scare you the most/least?  I feel like Marmol could start throwing it to the backstop if he isn't on his game from the beginning, and Howry could get hit hard if he has to start targeting the center of the zone.  Wood on the other hand has shown that he can regain his composure after a rough start, so I guess I would agree that he should close.

by Jerry Mumphrey on Mar 7, 2008 12:43 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

Marmol...
... has also shown that he is VERY good at stranding inherited runners, something a closer rarely has to do. That's why I'd rather see him in the 7th or 8th inning.

Bullpens work best when all the pitchers have well-defined roles. This year's Cub bullpen has a real good chance of being that sort of bullpen.

"That's my opinion and if you don't like it, well, I have others." ~ Groucho Marx

by Al on Mar 7, 2008 12:48 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

And young
Marmol's age is another reason to keep him out of the ninth inning. Remember that in this day and age, the Wrigley crowds generally have to have someone to pick on, and I'd rather it not be our young fireballer. Pitching in the seventh or eighth would give him more time to mature, but it's not perfectly safe (See Hawkins, LaTroy.)

For closer, I vote Woody in '08.

Et tu, Augie, et tu?

by mlf on Mar 7, 2008 1:00 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Awesome point...
The baseball "closer" is a valuable role, but too often overrated as the end all to a bullpen's struggles.  Bill James always talks about the importance of a "Bullpen Ace" to a team, someone who you can go to in almost any tight situation.  I think it's safe to say that we have three bullpen aces in Howry, Marmol and Wood.  This whole "closer controversy" is far too overblown.

I think teams are beginning to see this value, and salaries for middle relievers and setup men are beginning to show this importance.

Cinninati Reds managed by Lou Pinella because they used the bullpen by Committee and won the World Series.

by cubdreamer on Mar 7, 2008 5:18 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

No, they didn't.
There were the "Nasty Boys", all right -- three of them, Randy Myers, Rob Dibble and Norm Charlton -- but the closer was Myers. He had 31 saves. Dibble had 11 and Charlton 2 (and Charlton also started 16 games).

Thinking the 1990 Reds had "closer by committee" is a myth.

The most devastating loss
is one when the team lets one get away in the 9th. Somehow it doesn't seem so catastrophic when it happens in the 7th or 8th. As a result closers have been essentially limited to the 9th inning. And usually, the best reliever is given that position.

However, a number of managers are moving to the concept of using their most dominant guy when the flames are highest. That could be anywhere from 6th through 8th. IMHO, Marmol is our stopper. As a closer, he'd be unavailable in those situations. That says to me that Marmol stays out of the closer role and available when needed.

Ask yourself what would have happened if Dempster and Marmol had changed slots last year. Dempster would have been used on all those occasions in the earlier innings to stop the damage. Marmol would have only been used in the 9th. I suggest we would have never won the division.

If you like Selig's handling of the steroid issue, you'll love his choice for next Cub owner.

by tharr on Mar 7, 2008 2:02 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

I agree...
Marmol is that nasty set-up man that you put in that spot to hopefully get you out of the jam. I know it's still a stressful position, but in that situation giving up a run or two is usually not completely the set-up man's fault.  The blame is almost shared (with the pitcher before him)... if that makes sense.

Plus you have another inning or two to make up the deficit if the lead is given up.

A couple thoughts:
  1. wow carlos silva's contract is 4/48 and ted lilly's is 4/40. looks like we're getting our money's worth out of theodore
  2. Michael Bayou Fontenot is having himself a nice spring so far
  3. Gameday still thinks Silva is pitching to Murton

by philadelphiacub on Mar 7, 2008 3:11 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

Spring Stats
is there anywhere to find hitters stats for spring training? Gameday says that Kosuke is hitting 385 but i'd like to see what his OBP is.

All sorts of funny results in there.
Murton has a higher OBP than SLG, believe it or not.

by cwyers on Mar 7, 2008 3:26 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

IS it possible to
Schedule the M's for the rest of ST?

For some reason, we match up well against them.

Last year it was one of the few above .500 teams we had a winning record against!

Wait 'til next year. And the next. And the Next. And the next after that too.

He's a strange one
He doesn't have an ulnar collateral ligament in his pitching arm.

Apparently, it's like being a running back without having an ACL.

I don't understand why he's even in the ballpark unless he really does have a chance to make the club.  And he did just get out of the inning without damage.  Thank goodness that DOME knows how to play LF...he grabbed a well-hit ball on the warning track.

It's a disturbing trend, tho, that our starting pitchers are coming in, taking a few earned runs to get settled, and then they're fine.  We can't always score 2 runs in the bottom of the first.
