Arizona House Passes Spring Training Bill


Still to be determined is the amount of any ticket surcharge. Says Rep. John McComish, the bill's sponsor: "I don't intend to push this bill any further in the Senate until we have agreement amongst all of those parties."

Spring Training Funding Bill Amendment


AZ state Rep. John McComish is offering an amendment to the proposed bill to help fund the Cubs new complex. The rental car tax would be eliminated, and the ticket surcharge would be available to all teams, in addition to helping retire debt for Pima County after it lost all its ST teams.

The Cubs will play the Reds there on Sunday, March 21. I'm guessing the Cubs new complex will have similar amenities (and a larger stadium).

Further Details On Proposed AZ State Aid For New Cubs Spring Complex


From Spring Training Online: Mesa officials say this would be a good investment, as private investors would fund development surrounding the complex in an Arizona version of Wrigleyville. Initial response from state officials has been fairly positive, we're told, since there would be no tax increase for state residents. And we continue to hear the first choice among Cubs officials is to stay in Arizona if the numbers work.

The Arizona Republic examines the success of the Cactus League since 2000, when there were only 10 teams remaining and teams were threatening to move to Florida. Among other things, the state of Arizona passed a law allotting tons of money for stadium construction. Interesting reading.
