Al takes me to school

So I was feeling a little nostalgic and went through some old posts of mine back on usenet in ASBCC and found a post where I had broken the news about Alou being hired as the Giants' manager. Al takes me to task.

Ah, good old times.

I can't believe we let Baker go.

I mean, with a manager that makes his lineups like this:

"Baker said he sometimes sits in his office staring into space, pondering and pontificating over things of this nature, 'And sometime I just sit here and nothing comes.'  But he knows it'll all come to him as he observes exhibition games."

How does this man fool so many teams into hiring him?  Is this the type of things he says in his interviews?

Felix Pie - Twisted testicle

Ouch.  Perhaps overlooked in Soriano's fractured finger was this little tidbit [http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20080302&content_id=2400416&vkey=spt2008news&fex t=.jsp&c_id=mlb]:  "Felix Pie missed a couple days with a twisted testicle."  Wouldn't you ask the trainer to make something up?

Some other freakish injuries:

Any BCBers in this photo?

Google maps street view has expanded into Chicago.  Here's a view outside of Wrigley Field before/after a game.  I couldn't find any clues as to which game it was.  I assume it's from this past year though as street view hasn't been around that long.  Any ideas?  What's weird is that if you go up or down a few clicks on Clark, the crowds go away.  So they likely did a couple passes here.  Here's the link: http://tinyurl.com/2krvzv Full screen works better. Plus, check out the zoom.

Bonds - Boo/Cheer?

If he ties or breaks the record at Wrigley (and the Cubs have been part of breaking home run records), will there be cheers or boos?  Or will it depend on the effect it has on the game?  I for one would boo the crap out of him.

Did anyone else see this on deadspin?

I haven't seen this posted yet, but here's a video of the Cubs' dugout after Aramis' home run a couple days ago.  If this goes on in full view, I wonder what type of stuff goes on in the clubhouse?

Piniella quote

Speaking on Soriano's lack of hitting so far

"He's getting his hits, but he hasn't gotten hot yet," Piniella said of the Cubs leadoff hitter. "You've got to remember, he's from the Dominican Republic, where it's warm. A lot of the Latin kids, they start swinging a little better when it warms up a little bit."

Not as bad as this Harry Caray quote (as told by Bob Costas, paraphrased):
"After Jose Vizcaino dropped a pop-up, losing it in the sun, Harry said 'How is it that a kid from Mexico can lose that in the sun?'"

First of all, Vizcaino is from the DR.  And second, well, it's a remark only Harry could get away with.  Anyone else says that and they would have been sent to sensitivity training or fired.

I couldn't find a source on this.  I only remember it from an interview Costas had with Letterman a while ago.  Could have been ten years ago.  Anyone else know about this?

Cubs officially for sale

http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=2821964

From the article:

CHICAGO -- Tribune Co. said it plans to sell the Chicago Cubs at the end of the 2007 baseball season, putting one of its most valuable assets on the block as it simultaneously announced Monday that real estate magnate Sam Zell was acquiring the media conglomerate.

Anyone have a cool $600 million I could borrow?
