Jermaine Van Buren Traded

New, 38 comments

This just in!

The Cubs have traded Van Buren to the Red Sox for a PTBNL.

Van Buren has talent, no question about it. But in his brief major league trial, he was pretty wild. He is 25 years old, and the 2006 bullpen is pretty full with the two new acquisitions.

We shall see who the PTBNL winds up becoming, before rendering a decision on this trade. This, as the Leicester deal, may be a prelude to a larger trade with the team involved. It also clears a space on the 40-man roster.

UPDATE [2005-12-1 12:39:34 by Al]:

Another 40-man roster spot is apparently about to be vacated; the Rockies are interested in Todd Wellemeyer.

Most likely, another PTBNL will be the prize. The Cubs are stockpiling these things like they'd be useful in a nuclear winter or something.

Reminds me of the story of former Cardinals and Giants SS Jose Uribe -- who under the Spanish tradition of patronymics, came to the majors with the name Jose Gonzalez. He thought that was too common a name, so he took his matronymic -- Uribe -- instead, and his teammates dubbed him "The Player To Be Named Later".
