Got your attention with that one, right?
No, no signing, no trade.
But this is nice news nevertheless.
Cubs closer Ryan Dempster will be given the Jack Diamond Award as "Sports Personality of the Year" in his home of British Columbia, at a dinner on February 9 which is sponsored by the Jewish Community Centre of Greater Vancouver.
And yes, I spelled "centre" properly, as any of you who are Canadian will attest.
I have written often, and I will repeat it, that there are things that can win you baseball games that cannot be measured on a stat sheet. Ryan Dempster has some of those attributes. He is a genuinely nice guy, a good clubhouse presence, and for lack of a better term, he "gets it".
Of course, any such player also has to perform well in his role, and Dempster did last year, and I believe he will continue to do so.
The Cubs just added another such player to the roster in Juan Pierre.
If Jim Hendry will roll some very large dice and trade "whatever it takes" to get Miguel Tejada, they will have yet another such player, who is also of MVP caliber.
Thought you'd like to see a feelgood story today.
